    Bottom line: This was a strategic defeat for the German Air Force. They lost their entire strategic reserve for both fronts in an attack of dubious goals. The attack did not prevent the Anglo-Allies from continuing to enforce air supremacy over the battlefield, resupply Bastonge by air, devastate the attacking German forces in the Bulge after the weather broke, and simultaneously continuing the relentless Battle of Germany without a letup.

      Strategically Germany was defeated long before Bodenplatte and the Ardennes offensive. So yes it was a strategic defeat but it was a tactical victory. Hence why the allies covered up the effectiveness of the attacks.
      The reason Bastogne was able to be resupplied is because Bodenplatte was delayed due to poor weather.
      By the time the weather broke the Germans hadn't the fuel necessary to continue any major offensive actions.
      Basically their plan hinged on far too many factors beyond their control. Despite that however, as explained in the video, they achieved remarkable success given their fuel limitations and lack of trained airmen for the task at hand.

    The Luftwaffe was in much worse shape than the Allied air forces following Bodenplatte. Luftwaffe lost over 210 pilots KIA/POW compared to the Allies ~15 pilots KIA. Luftwaffe lost quite a few Wing, Group, and Squadron commanders, not just talking newer pilots here.
    Sure a lot of Allied planes were destroyed/damaged, but they had replacement planes sitting in England a couple of hours flight away, ready to go. I guess it made sense for the Germans to try something big and decisive since they were gradually melting their strength from attrition, but they would have needed to kill/incapacitate many times more Allied pilots which was unrealistic if the planes are mostly on the ground.

      Some historians have posited that it would have been more effective to strafe the airfield barracks rather than the aircraft. But it probably still wouldn't have turned the tide of the war.

      @@BlueMax109 Allies had the resources to replace any aircraft and personnel in that area, within a week or two.
      Honestly, once the breakout from Normandy was achieved NOTHING was going to turn the tide of the war on the western front. The battle of the Atlantic was won, total naval and air superiority over the British Isles and the English channel meant there was an uninterrupted and unstoppable flow of weapons and material from the US indutry direct to the front lines.
      The Reich was FUCKED!

    This is great historical work! Important too. I hadn't heard about the embarrassment that the allied air command suffered, nor about the fudged numbers, nor about the friendly ack ack story being largely a myth. I'll have to check out some of those books.

    I must allways laugh when i hear about the unexperieced german Pilots. I live in the near of an airfield that was used as nightfighter base and a training ground for beginners. Since mid 1944 they would not be able to start any plane bigger then a paperplane without a guard of 5 allied fighter planes. How , i ask could newbees trained under those conditions?

    good job. It takes so much research to debunk the theories about german aircraft getting knocked out en mass over allied airbases as if they were japanese torpedo bombers over the phillipine sea. I have even seen ridiculous videos saying that german flak took out 100 german aircraft before they even reach their targets. We all know that Bodenplatte was an ultimate failure that resulted in the loss of many german formation leaders and less trained pilots and that it changed nothing in the long run, but few know that allied losses were intentionally under reported. Perhaps a mass aerial assault on the allied heavy bombers while they were en route to bomb germany might sound as a more enticing (and even logical) proposition, however at that stage of the war with so many german pilots having so few flight hours, engaging a bomber formation at high altitude escorted by hundreeds of allied fighters (with trained pilots) launched from Belgium (thus denying the early warning advantage that the luftwaffe had while they had control of the french coast) might have been a total disaster. It made sense to send every plane you have to try to smash allied forces on the ground insteaad.

    • @BlueMax109
      @BlueMax109  Рік тому

      Thanks for watching and the detailed comment. Indeed the war was lost long before this. Had they concentrated their attacks on allied barracks it would have been harder to replace the loss of trained pilots than it was to replace material losses of which the allies had no shortage as well as unbroken supply lines.
      Considering the odds they certainly performed above expectations in difficult circumstances.

  • @gabrielrodriguez821
    @gabrielrodriguez821 Рік тому

    Well they could have done like the Japanese, for simplicity sake, kamikazed their inexperienced pilots into major ally targets and the Germans had the rocket technology to do it.

    So Damm near half the luftwaffe were shot down by their own air defense beefier arriving on scene and then airfield y29 had p47 squadron flying air support missions were airborne and the blue nose bastards of Bodney commanded by Lt. Col John Meyer Djibouti p51 D's knew the Germans were up to something were on the runway getting airborne as the luftwaffe were coming on scene and both squadrons got into the fight so yeah they did get 116 aircraft on the ground but losing more in the end was not a successful operation for the Germans the losses incurred by the allies was easily replaced
