You know what's funny here? That guy getting tortured was the movie's producer and Ledger's "Look at me" really terrified him and he instinctly looked at him. You can see his reaction.
its so sad that often the most talented artists, actors, singers etc. struggle so bad in this world, and really suffer on their mind so badly, !!! anybody an idea why is that???
My belief is that the Joker could have been a soldier once but was more likely working for a covert government agency thus why he’s great at weapon handling, war tactics, intimidation, etc. I believe he was captured by the enemy and tortured to the point of madness and completely abandoned by the government which would also explain why there is absolutely no record of him whatsoever. He may have even possibly been a soldier before working for a government agency, which definitely wouldn’t help with his PTSD, which is why referencing a group of soldiers being blown up means more to him. Just my thoughts.
He was a soldier and a group, maybe his, got blown up. When his tour was over he was recruited by a government agency, CIA probably since the Agency does take on veterans as contractors. He was given the code name “Joker” and all his records were classified above top secret when he was sent on an infiltration mission which is why he is not in any databases. He was caught and the CIA burned him, cutting all ties and denying any connection leaving him to be tortured which is how he got his scars. Eventually he managed to escape, psychologically broken and with a deep hatred of the system which betrayed him and now tries to destroy it.
@@codieomeallain6635 both of these conclusions make the most sense to me. Also alluding to the point in the movie where he refers to how he got his scars from his father he probably wasn’t actually harmed physically just scarred mentally which is why he says why so serious and let’s put a smile on that face. Where he alluded to his wife though she probably actually had scars and when he returned after escaping or being released from whoever tortured him later in life and appearing with similar scars she I think she did leave him after drifting and being homeless for a while and ending up in Gotham and his story continued from there. TLDR mentally scarred by father, get married, wife scarred still love her, served in military spec ops, team died and was covered up, hired by gov to be contractor, captured and tortured, left to burn, escape/released, return home wife horrified and left him, no money drifter, end up in Gotham, now as mentally sane as the Comedian, fights for chaos and to sow distrust in Batman.
What if this quote was referring to joker himself when he was in the military. Maybe joker got tortured then he got left for dead then he became insane
He revealed he had knowledge of how to be a rifle bearer in a ceremonial rifle drill team well enough that he fit in. Which is kind of something you need to practice.

The scariest thing about ledgers joker is that he’s complete sane. Every move he makes in the movie is cold and calculated so he could eventually bring Gotham to his knees, Dent was just the start.
Don't neccesarily agree here. People seem to think mentally ill people can't be geniuses. Unibomber Ted Kacynski was mentally ill yet still a genius with a philosophy. I think Jokers background is most similar to his, especially when you factor in the unkept appearance.
Fabian Joker did in a way succeed. He wanted Batman to kill to prove a point. He wanted to show that even Batman could be corrupted. When Batman killed Two-Face him and Gordon’s “Noble lie” made him a monster in the eyes of Gotham, just like Joker wanted. And Batman kills Two-Face so Joker succeeded either way.
Ghost _ does he kill joker? I thought he leaves him hanging on the tower and is found by the swat team. Ultimately putting him in high high security prison, and never having to worry about him again.
Fabian killing Batman would have made him a martyr and would have caused more vigilantes who would increase the escalation from the criminals, he killed the idea of Batman. Joker eliminated the mobs and got rid of Batman leading to the 8 greatest years in Gotham’s history
@@osvaldwulf9960 the original plan was to have a dual Bane/Joker villain in the third movie. And Bane was Joker’s next step in his plan. Of course ledger’s death forced to Nolan to substantially rewrite the third film.
Assuming they’d go with the military origin story: they’d probably have him be a soldier deployed to Afghanistan, being assigned to a squad that he’d become close with. They’d designate different call-signs for each other, and his would be “Joker” since he’d be the funny guy in the squad. Maybe he’d take this to heart and put a Joker card in his helmet or something. Then when him and his squad are in a truck, it explodes from a landmine and he’s the only survivor with no working radios or anything to use to call for backup. Finally to parallel DKR, he’d make the long trek back to America, going AWOL after going insane and convincing himself he was left for dead. It would be then that his old persona would die and “The Joker” would be born. He’d eventually return to Gotham, his hometown, donning a clown outfit as his own bizarre way of honoring his fallen comrades, and deadset on having revenge by causing chaos.
He seemed to know how to clean up after a mission like a CIA operative would like in the intro bank scene how he paid off each guy to kill one of their comrades then someone else kill them
A rock their loyal to the job and pay out. Money says a lot for people that will do anything for it. Also Jennifer Pyrce great philosophy but Joker wants the world to be mad like him to “open their eyes” and be just like him so he wants people crazy like him and the world to become as chaotic as him
That's more of a Delta thing than anything else, Josh. Being part of Green Berets....well Deltas or Elements or Comat Applications Group are Green Berets, will not give you such knowledge. full metal jacket >main character has the name “joker” >humorous personality at beginning of film >by end of film he is turned into a sadistic killer because of all the trauma he experienced as a marine in the vietnam war Kubrick made the jokers backstory I can buy that
I just thought about the fact that the when the joker reveals himself to the bank manager he says “I believe whatever doesn’t kill you, simply makes you ... stranger” could refer to his time in the army if he was an ex soldier where whatever doesn’t kill you, stating that he survived everything and didn’t die (obviously), makes you stranger, indicating him being haunted by the memories of the military and therefore driving him insane and making him stranger as in a mysterious psycho clown.
Wrong if he was a veteran their would be info fingerprints data numbers the army just dont get anyone in the streets this is why this theory fails when a soldier dies they have all the info so they can tell their families that he died and then they give them money i just killed this theory thank me later boss
Golden HD you do know that in the movie they literally tried to find his fingerprints and couldn’t right? Lol and that this guy in the video explained what type of military he was referring to?
I agree with this theory, but with a slightly different spin on it. The writers said that they were working on the thought that the Jokers' Glasgow smile was self-afflicted. I think it was partly both. As a soldier, I imagine the Joker seeing his squad blown up in a truck that he was MEANT to be in, and perhaps either the initial explosion or some munitions that went off right after caused HALF of his smile and knocking him unconscious. Next, I picture the Joker, while recovering at headquarters, overhearing their officers discussing the operation he was a part of. When questioned about casualties, the officers respond that they were within "acceptable losses." This leads to the Jokers bit about how "nobody panics when everything goes according to plan. Even when the plan is horrifying." Also, it wouldn't be much of a stretch to imagine his squads callsign had "Joker" in it. Anyway, the realization that society at large is cruel and uncaring could make him angry and vengeful.
That's how I always kind of saw it, too. His chin and the left side of his face are a mess and look like they could be the result of some kind of explosion or shrapnel or something. The scar on the right side of his face is very clean and straight, like it was done with a knife, possibly by himself after he recovered and, like you said, learned just how little society for the most part thinks or cares about things like that.
This whole theory should be made into a film by Warner bros. But, all reference to the joker should be cut to save the film from hate and any restrictions.
@YoungD3mon314 a random civilian probably will be thrown off balance from the kick back while firing RPG.. hence reduce the accuracy. so, this still a plus for ex-army joker theory
@@flatearth245 Hate to be do a douche, but you're actually wrong. RPGs actually have almost no recoil because the blast from the propellant exits out the back. Firearms have recoil because the energy from the ignition of propellant is pushed back into the gun. However, with rocket launchers, the energy is directed from the back which itself is often lethal to about 10+ feet from the back. Also, the RPG-7 has excellent accuracy at about 100 yards where even someone with minimal training can hit a moving target at about 96% of the time according to US Army studies. Enough, with the nitpicking. I agree with the theory of an ex-military Joker. He is clearly competent with a number of different firearms (from pistols to submachine guns to rifles), he knows how to work with explosives (his grenade suicide vest, the aforementioned RPG-7, the bomb at the hospital, and gasoline bombs for Harvey and Rachel), he has organizational skills (he was able to get groups as diverse as professional bank robbers, street thugs, and the mentally ill to work efficiently to achieve a task), he is familiar with interrogations (being on either end of them), and his fighting style is clearly far more refined than street brawling, but lacks elaborate kicks or clean combos, it focuses on quick moves that are meant to seriously injure or kill his opponent (which is very similar to combatives taught in various armed forces). It is perfectly plausible the Joker was someone like a Green Beret or CIA Special Operations Group. Someone who is trained in a wide variety of skills with leadership ability and a significantly higher competence level than your average soldier. It's possible that what he had to and what he experienced lead him to become bitter and cynical and turn his skills against a society that he found hypocritical. Many war veterans talk about how war reveals the worst impulses in humanity on both the individual and group level and how quickly even otherwise nice and civilized men quickly become sadistic beasts. Of course, there's also the possibility he was always bad. Not every bad person in the military got that way due to trauma suffered in war or being brutalized in training. Some people go into the service fucked in the head. It's possible he was always a sick bastard and joined the military because it would give him the chance to kill people. Despite popular belief, the Special Forces tend to avoid letting in sociopaths and psychopaths (because they are unpredictable and treacherous), but some still slip through. His sadism and blood lust could have served him well in combat, but the skills he learned in the service just created someone far more dangerous.
I agree with you. The Joker’s story requires a man, a sensitive, intelligent, and passion man, to be crushed and then to rise again in a new form. Like the Phoenix rising from the ashes. Places and situations that can crush a man’s spirit include, but are not limited to, war, love, and dreams. When that part of you dies, what’s left is forced to remain alive and live in this world. It is the process of continuing to live when a part, a big part of you is dead, that a man chooses to be Batman or the Joker. Batman’s childhood died when his parents were killed. To continue living, Bruce Wayne became Batman. With the Joker, something he loved and cared for deeply died. With his choice to live, he became the Joker. It’s the same tragedy that Bruce Wayne faced. The Joker, equally as talented as Batman, simply chose another path. The Joker is a performance artist. Look at his face paint. The Joker, like an actor in a movie, is trying to tell us something. The message is: there are many here among us that feel life is but a joke. The Joker’s Nihilism is a reaction to severe emotional trauma. To get even, to prove his point, or to establish moral or intellectual superiority, the Joker is going to prepare his shit sandwich and make us all take a bite.
I'm a war veteran with PTSD and remember thinking in the opening of this movie.."He has definitely been trained in the military somehow." Good job on this video. And you made some extremely compelling arguments especially when it came to him being special forces. I would have gone with MARSOC more than the Berets though because all Marines do is think of destruction to our targets lol.
Here's a joke. Your profile picture Because your profile picture is dumb Hahahahahahahhahahahahahahahaha It's not a joke because I explained it so it's funnier
@@thevroom1643 no? That statement doesn't make sense. As incorruptible as the joker is redeemable? That means batman isn't incorruptible at all. Means he can be corrupted. The joker will never be redeemed. Its impossible after everything he's done.
Not exactly, it could also mean he knows human behaviour to the level of knowing what you're thinking, I mean all his plans were exact, he is a psychopath but psychopaths tend to to be better at blending into society and manipulating people.
And wrong. Batman killed Harvery Dent and turned to surveilance of all of Gotham to find the Joker, showing that there really is no depth (this version of) the Batman won't stoop to for his sense of morality. He really did show that the Batman can't be trusted with the power he has and even Bruce realizes it, handing it over to Fox, who destroys it.

"Yes Colonel, the unit is set to depart in 10." *The Colonel notices and irregularity in the Lieutenant's uniform.* "What is that on your vest, soldier?" *The Lieutenant, a little scared and shaken, pulls out a joker card. In the 1989s the joker said something like "if 15 soldiers die for a plan, no one cares. but if a president dies, everybody will care. If he was one of the soldiers that were injured for a bigger plan, it would explain his hatred towards to government. And sorry for my bad english btw :D
Imagine that if Heath Ledger hadn’t died, and he and Christopher Nolan made a Joker origin movie, it would have been considered the greatest Joker origin movie of all time. Heath’s acting prowess along with Nolan’s directing genius, it would have made one great movie.
He clearly has advanced weapons training, interrogation and illicitation training, explosives employment and manufacturing training, forensic training, no dental, medical or personal records anywhere, knows proper drill procedures for a funeral, knows how to organize, recruit, and supervise a guerrilla esqe resistance against conventional forces. Not phased by gunshots, explosions, yelling or screaming, all of which are traits shared by many combat veterans, especially those who have high op tempo and deploy a lot. If you look at the premise of the movie it draws parallels unmistakably (almost painfully) to America's surveillance debate post 9/11. In which surprise surprise (and believe me I remember) a HUGE amount of people wanted to enlist into the military. Many of which came back with PTSD, missing limbs, dead family members etc. A tragedy.
i disagree for many of those points. For “advanced weapons training” he doesn’t handle firearms professionally at all and all while proficient with firearms, in no way utilizes them like a proper soldier. Advanced weapons training isn’t just about hitting your target, it’s about understanding the applications for different weapon systems and how to use them as effectively as possible which he does not show at all. For interrogation and illicitation i agree in some respects but i don’t think he needs to be a soldier to understand things that anybody with a degree in psychology knows. I completely disagree with explosives and demolitions as anybody with access to the internet and their local department store can create remote explosives, especially with field manuals such as improvised munitions 31-210 out there creating explosives is not something unique to military personnel. What you said about understanding basic guerrila warfare and destabilizing a formal opponent is also not exclusive to military personnel. My main point being while he might be proficient in certain areas that typical special forces operators are also proficient in, in most cases he could’ve have either googled how to do it, read a book on it, or just practiced a skill like hitting targets with firearms. edit: i didn’t bring up the records about dental and fingerprints in my comment as i have no clue as to how that is done but my guess is it was probably done to create a sense of mystery from a writing standpoint and wasn’t supposed to be a main plot point but if it was there’s many ways to alter or even remove your fingerprints through the use of acid and pins and i’m not too familiar with dental records so i don’t know about those.
@@iank4028 ....most soldiers in the army aren't profecient with weapons lol. Stop watching movies thinking every soldier is a sf combat kung fu fighter hahha.
I have to say Heath Ledger did so well as the Joker he basically ruined the live action role, I'm not sure anyone can top his performance. This is also the most plausible theroy. A mobster or basic criminal wouldn't necessarily have the skills to take down a government, in this case a city but still. Not to mention go toe to toe with a master martial artest and tactician like Batman. A Spec-Ops guy however is a completely different story.
@ZeroWolf actually joker could have actually been his call name. They wouldn't just call out their real names, but definitely a code name. And Joker is actually a very common one. So spec ops makes a lot of sense beyond his capabilities.
It's weird to me that not only did Joker seem like a war veteran, his actions came from his beliefs on what Gotham should be. It seems like he's acting patriotic in his own twisted way, taking matters in his own hands for the sake of his country. This is supported by the fact that he wanted to prove that Gotham was never a great place full of good people. So my theory is that Joker wants to "upset the established order" because, the city is already corrupt and when people will finally rise up, he would've accomplished his goal of making Gotham a better place with acts of terrorism.
Also I forgot to mention, the Joker did seem upset when the bombs on either ship didn't go off and he had to do it himself, but he probably didn't think that it was so much of a rising up moment and it was only a small sign of good people there, so he had low expectations and maybe he didn't think it was good enough. People are free to question me on this theory. Another reason why I had this theory in mind was that, Joker killed a majority of gang members in this movie. What Joker had in mind for killing the gang members was to show ultimately how much of failures these criminals were due to the Batman beating them up out there most of the time and how small of group they are now that Falconi's gone. However I think this is just so he can make his terrorist plan work so no other criminal can get in the way. Same thing applies to Gotham's police department. Think about it, these cops weren't really feeling like doing their job before Batman came around and a majority of them are corrupt, so Joker was trying to eliminate that majority in order for them to think about their actions. Joker also attended a march in disguise for Harvey Dent's DA election (or at least I think, my memory's all fuzzy since the last time I watched the movie) and tried to kill him to prove that Gotham has no savior. Batman couldn't be a savior either, because he doesn't have full trust of the people. One final reason for why the theory could work is that Joker was going to have an appearance in The Dark Knight Rises. Before Health Ledger died, the Joker was originally supposed to make a cameo in that movie. He was going to be in a prison cell watching the news where Bane is getting the public's attention by reading Commissioner Gordon's secret statements on Harvey and why he's not everything citizens think he is and this gets the Joker smiling. I'm sure you can infer on how that detail supports the theory if you seen the whole movie.
Them not blowing each other up wasn’t a sign of “good people”; it was a sign of weak people. No one wants to get their hands dirty, and no one wants to take action. His entire plot revolves around bringing the people to action. Ras Al Ghul even eludes to this innate weakness in humans. Specifically, he calls out Bruce’s dad for not having the gumption to act. The Joker was literally trying to beat that weakness out of people. Some people might point out that The Joker thought people could be “mad” just like him. Except, Joker doesn’t think himself as a madman. In fact, he thinks himself enlightened. When he’s first talking with the mob bosses, someone calls him crazy, to which he replies, “I’m not crazy...”. Later on, he tells Batman that he’s (The Joker) just, “ahead of the curve”.
I agree. I think thats why he claps when Gordon is promoted to commissioner. Hes not clapping to be sarcastic, hes clapping because he knows Gordon is the best cop on the force in Gotham.
Highly underrated comment. Edit: Now that you mention it, since this universe takes place in the real world I'm surprised a shadowy intelligence agency didn't show up, with Amanda Waller pulling the strings. Joker is a cia special agent that was recruited by Amanda Waller to destabilise Gotham.
The Dark Knight Rises had the plan to have the Joker as the main villain again before Heath Ledger died. That would be absolutely nuts if Amanda Waller showed up in Gotham City with tons of special forces, Joker having half of Gotham turned to his side by the end of the movie and fighting against them and the police, War on the streets of Gotham, just like in the Dark Knight Rises.
I've been thinking about this particular comment since I was it years ago. And this is my head canon now, even tho I have absolutely no evidence for it. Amanda Waller and her agency is one the big bads of the Nolan verse along with the league of shadows, Joker was an agent of Waller's suicide squad that went rogue and fell off the grid where he ended up in Gotham. Which is why they can't find any of his fingerprints or other dna on their database.
Are you trying to quote the scene towards the end when he's hanging upside down? If so...... You kind of butchered it. Ahem!.... _"This is what happens when an unstoppable force, meets an immovable object"_
@@권복-s2u Why is it so hard for people to know how to correctly write out the language that they speak? Brilliant analysis, I’ll try to add on this. My then-gf saw the movie before me, was fascinated with the character and his background. She reached the same conclusion as our author here did. So she asked me to watch the movie, knowing that I have very similar background to the one Joker supposedly has. She didn’t say anything about her theory, but cautioned me that we’ll talk after I watch the movie. So, it’s an issue that I was drawn to very early on. My modest opinion: Joker was indeed an ex-military. Moreover, he was in a special operations unit, legit or dark. He operated behind the enemy lines (he wields a variety of weapons throughout the course of the movie). Moreover, he was in the military intelligence. His methods in the game theory, stratagem and negotiations with mob bosses all point out that he was interrogator of particularly hard cases. A complete lack of his data from the records indicate that even his military record was erased (not classified, because police would get for his fingerprints a positive match, but would not be able to reach to the files). Interrogation scene is, of course, interesting. If Joker is such a vet, why he doesn’t fight Batman? 1) he doesn’t have to, he has all the cards; 2) he cannot defeat man in such suit, so he’s conserving energy “for the phone call”. Laughing on the physical torture is one of methods that members of special ops are trained to, by the way. But, it is probably not true that Joker has no people that know him, and he trusts them (children, siblings, parents, buddies from military days). His suit is custom-made, there are no indications on him from where is he. He is wearing paint to avoid face recognition software, as it has been showed in the movie itself, how the software was struggling to match him. Much like Batman, Joker is protecting somebody. In the end, he ended in captivity and was probably tortured and disfigured, and got himself from the captivity or with the help of non-government agents. His resentment, accompanied with PTSD, probably many other issues turned to the “moral code” of the “civilised people” as highly hypocritical (a common theme among ex-military vets). My apologies for such a long post, but it has been a recurring topic of some movie discussions in my past 10 years.
It makes perfect sense. The "never start with the head" in the interrogation scene suggests a true professional with training and experience. His actions are those of a master tactician. I think you nailed it.
Also when he’s called crazy, he responds..”I’m not crazy” peeved and feeling belittled. He made that movie, he defined that character so well we still are in awe of what and how he did it. RIP Heath you were a giant and a talent we never knew the true depth of.
I honestly believe that the Joker in the nolanverse was a cynical person that hated society. He then went to the military to give himself purpose in life. After he was finished, he probably still felt a void in his life and hated society even more. Basically, I believe his goal in the movie was to destroy society itself, the good and bad parts of society. And my guess why he antagonizes Batman is because Joker believes he gives false hope to a corrupt society. This was my own theory on the Heath Ledger Joker.
@BLACK WHISPER! That's why I think he was probably normal before entering the military and special forces even. In Special forces you see the darkest part of humanity.
He does say "If tomorrow I tell the police that like a gangbanger will get shot or a truckload of soldiers will be blown up nobody panics. Because it's all part of the plan." So maybe he used to be a soldier and his unit got killed with him being the only survivor and got pissed off at the government for seeing his unit as expendable.
Yes, I agree 100% he was ex military and I also think that his goons or atleast some of them were in his unit or had military experience on account of how they were able to follow orders during their mission of chaos without hesitation
I also reached a similar conclusion, though I'd give him a bit more credit and thought of him as a black ops CIA handler rather than a more frontline Special Ops. The skillset would match ever so slightly more: the conducting and execution of plans, weapons training and a better set of diplomatic skills which could also come into play on both sides of interrogation. Being a close tie to the CIA would also mean they would more readily be able to bury his details and deny his existence should his operations be found out (personally I think this happened and they used Arkham to hide him away from prying eyes). The fact mentioned that his clothes had no labels: this is something done by international spies to better conceal their identities should they be killed (thanks Unsolved!). The last thing left would be motive: The Dark Knight's Joker seem to care about nothing but anarchy as you've said: I reckon if he was a buried CIA operative, he'd have essentially spent a good few years essentially helping pull strings behind the curtains in order to maintain society as we know it, meaning that when he's made to disappear, he's been betrayed by the system he's helped preserve and his one real motive at that point (as an angry, dangerous man who doesn't exist) is to topple it, using insight he's gained from years of upholding it. I guess it also sort of represents a form of opposite to Batman, a man like anyone else (deep down at least) who clearly has a lot to lose and wears a mask to protect those things; vs the Joker, a man stripped of his position in the system, whose only sense of identity left is to put on a mask of his own and show the world just how little he has to lose and how much he can gain.
Heath ledger's joker is by far the greatest joker in the dark knight, I just hope Joaquin Phoenix can fix of the joker character, do in justice where Jared leto has failed. R.I.P heath ledger.
I dont think leto failed. He didnt have a real character build up like heath ledger joker did. Dar knight was like a 3 hr movie. Suicide squad was long but had to split time with other characters villains and the story line itself. Dark knight story lone was based soley on the building of the jokers character and the battle between batman. Dark knight is a master piece within itself. This Phoenix joker may be very abstract and not exactly like we see the joker. Itll have a more realistic feel to it. Like maybe the 20's and 30's scary clowns. Very distorted facial paint the creepy you out moreso.
Jared Leto didnt fail. All of his scenes were cut to make way for will smith's fat head. Jared Leto did a great joker. And i do like that joker. But he needed his own film and more screen time. putting him in suicide squad as a fucking support character was a disservice.
I know we aren't supposed to know his origin and that's what makes him such a good character, but the ex-military theory actually feels correct in some ways.
Makes a lot of sense, Nolan is smart enough to have used this origin. Joker's fighting seemed a bit weak for military but he knew how to go to work with that pipe at the end.
I’d imagine anyone’s fighting would seem a bit weak if they were fighting Batman. He was able to take out Gambol’s muscle in a split second with that pencil trick though lol.
Also he easily disarmed that Police officer when talking to him about his friends ( the dead cops). Also, Gambl's men in that scene where he pretends to be dead get killed by him. If you look closely he jumps up by stabbing both men in the stomach and using their body weight to lift himself up at Gambl.
I know it's been awhile since you've covered this topic. I have an extra thought to add for consideration into this Joker's origin. I agree that the joker has extensive military training, but the loss of his original self could also be attributed to a long term, deep undwrcover spy. Having returned home after his mission was complete but with nothing to really ground himself to his original name. He would have lost himself between who he was suppose be and the character he created for himself during his mission. His facial scars would be some of the many he would have inflicted upon his body in a crazed effort to straighten his thoughts out. In the end leaving his memories and personality shattered. As the Joker once said. "If I'm going to have a past. I prefer it to be multiple choice."
I was watching some clips last night and had the exact same thoughts especially in the interrogation scene. He 100% knew what he was talking about, so definitely had training in it. Definitely would’ve been cool to see a take on his origin
The Joker, in my opinion, is one of the best villains! He has way more to him than just the stereotypical, "I'm going to take over/destroy/rule the world" nonsense. It's like he just wants to play but his version of "playing" involves guns, knives, and explosives. RIP Heath Ledger
This is theory makes a lot of sense after 10 years. Only an agent of the government or a military trained operative could've pulled off everything Joker did. Further example is the Dent hospital room scene, Joker is holding the gun against his head. Look at his finger placement. He gave Dent the illusion of choice but place one of his fingers in the way so that the hammer of the revolver wouldn't strike the primer for the bullet. No matter what he chose, Joker was in control. The illusion of choice. Something a CIA operative or former Green Beret would learn to do over time.

That's what I liked most about Heath Ledger's portrayal of the Joker: You really didn't know much about his origins other than his early childhood abuse at the hands of his father. He remained a mystery, an enigma, someone who you would use your imagination to try and solve the puzzle regarding his background, but could never quite piece everything together. Was he a disgruntled war veteran who felt betrayed by the very government he once trusted with his life? Or maybe even a former police officer who grew bitter after being wrongfully terminated by the same system he swore to uphold? Or maybe, he was simply just some delusional mental patient with a twisted grudge against society for no apparent reason whatsoever. Perhaps he really DID want to "watch the world burn" ... but the question is, WHY? What drove him to that point? There's usually a reason for a retribution, but will we ever know the truth? So many questions, so few answers.
Imagine the military brass code named him Joker when he wasn’t joker until he broke when his men got whipped out and he went missing in action? (He was the only survivor in his unit )
That's another hairbrained theory from this kid who isn't even an American or knows American culture and military. Joker would be the last person in the world to join the military
Ty Nao We don’t really know since we don’t have a clear, canon answer to what he was like or who he was before the Dark Knight. That’s why we have this theory, there’s just enough to go on in order to make a theory like it. You said in another comment he was never accepted in society “since birth”, how would you know? If that was a common fact we wouldn’t have these theories. But it isn’t, meaning your word means just as much/little as this UA-cam video. And if you think he would never have been accepted into the military for whatever reason, I bring you: every serial killer who use to be in the military, however long it was (Jeffery Dahmer most notably), you can literally just look that stuff up (“you didn’t bring examples off the top of your head this doesn’t mean anything” yeah yeah well that’s why I said look it up, because it’ll still be there). And considering I have friends who I know after their military years will definitely not be mentally well, I’m sure the “they wouldn’t accept them” attitude means jack and shit. You just don’t like this theory, that’s all you’re bitching about, but hate to break it to you but it’s just as valid as any other theory because of how little we know of the character in this movie.
This whole theory makes me want to watch the film again, if for no other reason to explore this in more depth. Really makes you wonder if Nolan had developed the character to that depth. Christopher would have been an insanely popular comic book writer if life had taken him in that direction, but don't mistake that as a complaint about his movie career. That gent really makes you think
I find your argument very compelling, especially about his being a black ops operative, that would explain the lack of information about him perfectly. Perhaps he's a bit like Jason Bourne, part of a secret project but gone rogue.
The scene with the Joker in the interrogation room with the detective when he gives his speech on why he uses knives is also particularly revealing. “People show you, in their last moments, who they really are.” Again, adds more credibility to his past interrogations
I think less Green Beret... I have a Green Beret in the family, they say he's more likely a Delta veteran, former CIA SAD, or a military guy who did a lot of mercenary work in some kinds of black operations.
Perfect analysis, I completely agree with your assessment, he was also very physically fit, and had extremely sharp hand to hand combat abilities. Special Forces soldier with sever PTSD. The New Joker is poor child that grew up with severe PTSD.
That was an extremely astute and extremely accurate description of Heath Ledger's portrayal of the Joker. Most amazing acting I've ever seen and we are sooo without since he's been gone. Amazing actor, amazing brain! Sad story, but incredible last performance. I watched 10 Things I Hate About You the other day and now I'm about to watch The Dark Knight.... you can't even pretend to tell the be difference between him in those movies, truly a gifted person and will and should be missed
I agree with the theory in the video except on one point. Him being MIA wouldn't necessarily explain how he didn't show up in databases. He might have been at a level of military intelligence at which he would have known how to wipe records of his existence from various databases, before disappearing. The scars present another mystery; in certain places, they look more like shrapnel marks, and in others, razor wounds, but if he had had those in the military, he would have been very recognizable on television, so that a former comrade could have just called up the Gotham police department and told them. Anyway, current theory: - Joker was in the special forces, learning basic demolition and stuff before moving into intelligence. He possibly developed connections in the CIA/NSA/whatever. Likely in an important role, since he has so much experience designing and executing complex missions. - Gets in an explosion so that he gets shrapnel wounds on the left side of his face, goes crazy, presumed MIA. - Wipes records of his existence from various fingerprinting databases using his knowledge of the intelligence community. - Cuts the right side of his face (look closely at the makeup, without paint) to go in with the whole joker schtick. He uses this and the face paint to make himself even more unrecognizable, since part of his thing is releasing tapes on TV and he wouldn't want to be identified by former comrades. - A few people that he worked with in the intelligence community probably do recognize him, though, but they're tight-lipped about it, since it calls into question any psychological evaluation process they have in place, it's a local and not a national problem, and with his thorough work in purging databases, it's easier to just build plausible deniability and say nothing publicly. Them being in intelligence, this is pretty easy.
The scars could be from being captured and tortured by a terrorist group or something like that... Let's say he were being a smart ass when they were trying to torture him & they said " oh you think your funny guy. You must be a clown, but you don't look like one.. Let's put a smile on that face" before carving a smile Into his face.. I mean this is just something I thought of off the top of my head but actually makes total sense imo
I like your idea of The Joker as a Military Soldier. I always thought he was a former cop like them, and that's how he knew how he thought and strategised but a soldier is much more likely as he always able to best them and get out of their situations. I also felt that he wasn't physically tough enough to be a soldier like Killmonger but he probably just stopped training himself. Great video.
Nolan wouldn't do that. He'd leave it to the audience's interpretation which imo is far more powerful than a lame backstory which not everyone will agree with - no offence to this vid because it is plausible and I quite like it
You're spot on with everything except him being a Green Beret. Green Berets are usually a bit older because they're training takes so long and because they spend such a long time out in the field. The Joker is still a fairly young guy for a Green Beret with ptsd. Also, Green Berets are the most compassionate of all special operators. They're motto is to free the oppressed. They're main specialty is teaching uneducated freedom fighters how to wage war on war lords. And most telling, Green Berets fingerprints and ids aren't removed from federal data bases. There's no reason for it. I believe The Joker was probably a Ranger, specialists in the things he claimed to love, explosives and bullets. They are also usually very young when they start seeing action. What I believe happened was that he was extremely good at his job and maybe enjoyed it a bit too much. So he was probably recruited by the CIA. The CIA loves to recruit exceptional Rangers. They would've taught him interrogation techniques, espionage, counter terroism tactics, and how to endure torture. The CIA would also have removed all of his fingerprints, ID, and other records from all data bases. As is their standard operating procedure with spooks. He was probably on a mission that went south, resulting in his scars, probably from being tortured, and the CIA just cut him loose. Abandoning him to his fate and disavowing all knowledge of him. He eventually escapes and returns broken, with a new desire to watch the world that abandoned him burn.

When questioned about casualties, the officers respond that they were within "acceptable losses."
This leads to the Jokers bit about how "nobody panics when everything goes according to plan.

@YoungD3mon314 a random civilian probably will be thrown off balance from the kick back while firing RPG.. hence reduce the accuracy.
so, this still a plus for ex-army joker theory
@@flatearth245
Hate to be do a douche, but you're actually wrong.

This is also the most plausible theroy. A mobster or basic criminal wouldn't necessarily have the skills to take down a government, in this case a city but still. @ZeroWolf actually joker could have actually been his call name. They wouldn't just call out their real names, but definitely a code name. And Joker is actually a very common one. So spec ops makes a lot of sense beyond his capabilities.

I personally think Nicholson was the greatest joker
I, too, thought that Heath Ledger's Joker might have been a soldier in the past. It makes a better story than him being a failed comedian.
HELL YEAH :D
We have yet to see how Joaquin Phoenix's _Joker_ will turn out. It's three months away from theatrical release.
I preffer a comedian
But the failed comedian aspect makes more sense as to why he dons a joker outfit for his crimes imo.
I’d like to see an origin film about the Heath Ledger Joker as a solider disfigured in the War on Terror.
Nope... He just want anarchy.... He wanted to prove that with a little shove in the right direction everybody's bad

Even in 2019 The Dark Knight is still #1. ICONIC
Imagine if Amanda Waller was the one who erased his past
Highly underrated comment.
Edit: Now that you mention it, since this universe takes place in the real world I'm surprised a shadowy intelligence agency didn't show up, with Amanda Waller pulling the strings.
Joker is a cia special agent that was recruited by Amanda Waller to destabilise Gotham.
Wouldn't that be something.
That would've gave us a Suicide Squad movie made by Nolan. Much better from what we got I guess.
There's been a theory on the comic book joker actually not being crazy and more of being a super genius. The soldier with ptsd is and awesome theory.

As Spock would say "Quite a logically interpretation of a man who simply has nothing to lose!"
@BLACK WHISPER!
That's why I think he was probably normal before entering the military and special forces even. In Special forces you see the darkest part of humanity.
basically,
w E L I v e i N a S o C i e t Y
He does say "If tomorrow I tell the police that like a gangbanger will get shot or a truckload of soldiers will be blown up nobody panics. Because it's all part of the plan." So maybe he used to be a soldier and his unit got killed with him being the only survivor and got pissed off at the government for seeing his unit as expendable.
This is a good theory!
Well Jared Leto didn't really have a chance...
Can't blame Jared Leto for a shitty script, he's actually a decent actor.
Jared supposedly took a lot of pointers from Heath. But he couldn't do much with a horrible script and short film time.
Nooope their would be info about him data if he was in the army
I think it does too
Thanos: you should’ve gone for the head The joker: never start with the head

Something about the way he says “LOOK AT ME!” Always gives me chills. He was hands down the greatest Joker.
I always thought joker said “it’s fear.”
But he actually said “it’s fair.”
It's both.
It's bare
it's bear
It beer
It's hair
However he managed to get into such a character, amazes and scares me. A legend, RIP Heath Ledger
Except he took his finger off the hammer a few times.

@@SSNebula, because maybe he didn't really _want_ to speak to another person like that, but he had to because the character called for it. Maybe he didn't want to access that dark part of his own psyche.

He knew how to do the Color Guard formations and moves also

Anyway, current theory:
- Joker was in the special forces, learning basic demolition and stuff before moving into intelligence.
So basically: unstoppable force meets immovable object
Force passes through the object .
@@frankcastle4715An unstoppable force meeting an intangible object…
“ I believe whatever doesn’t kill you simply makes you , STRANGER “ That’s one of the best lines in cinematic history !!
this is a great analysis but let me offer this one:
he’s just smart
Just a normal smart person wouldn’t go to such lengths without some kind of trauma.

Very nice video. Very believable theory. I wouldn’t be surprised if Nolan were to confirm that this is accurate.
Fingers crossed that he stumbles on to this video :)
9:32 Interrogation scene was one of the best Dark Knight. Heath Ledger's acting really awesome.
I like it the Joker's telling truth towards Batman.
北岡霊人 I love that scene too and ehhh, more or less. He does swap the addresses up on purpose though so Batman loses either way
