His greatest strength, his jab, was probably a factor out of many in his lack of popularity as a champion at the time. He's not an exciting power puncher or one for ring theatrics, he just cooly lands that stinging, stiff jab with pinpoint accuracy again and again and again, eventually outpoints or knocks you out late in the fight. Great that now people appreciate his skills.

@@MrDioXIII while I see your point, I have to disagree to a certain extent. His right cross was lethal. His uppercuts and combos were beautiful. Larry knew how to chamber his strikes and had good feet. And when it came time to he sloppy and slug it out, he never backed down. His mild mannered nature contributed to his lack of popularity back then. Ya know, I had a Doberman once. His name was Diablo. He didn't bark. He was gentle with the kids. One day a pit bull dog from who knows where took after my daughter and the Doberman picked that pit bull apart , grabbed his throat and would have killed the dog if I hadn't I finally pulled him off. I caught the pit and we found the owners. They all went to jail because they were operating an illegal dog fighting ring. Long story short is Larry is like a Doberman. Long, lean, fast, and accurate. Larry had the all around most complete jab because he had so many different variations of it, could dance with it, could go flat footed and beat you up with it, could throw it from the waist etc. liston had most powerful jab of all time he used his jab very differently too. Predominantly using it coming forwards and using it to set up his own offence in stead of the typical jab used to keep distance, the prime Cassius Clay had the fastest, snappiest jab ever seen that 1964 clay nobody in history beats him to the punch, way too quick with the trigger for anyone in history

Yeah the way he kinda circles to the left from the outside with floaty footwork and throws the jab out there with unpredictable timings at any point throughout his feet movement cycle. One of my favorite things to watch in boxing, it's just so fun to do, I always try to replicate it when I practice/spar. If you're tall and have a good reach its extremely oppressive, they just feel stuck like a heavybag, not able to make any forward progress on getting you towards the ropes since youre circling them, theyre constantly having to adjust to you, and they don't know when to advance since theyll probably eat a stiff jab if they do. Feels like you're a mongolian horse archer against a hapless foot soldier

Larry Holmes was the greatest heavyweight of his era. I know he may consider that a slight because he has never wavered in his belief that he was the greatest heavyweight of all time. He had the competitiveness of a true champion. In the end, Larry is universally recognized as one of the greatest heavyweight boxers in history. I hope he has found peace in that recognition. In life, what more can one ask for? Sleep easy Larry: nobody denies the mark you made, NOBODY.

Holmes, Ali and Liston had the best jabs in the heavyweight division
    1) I think Holmes takes the edge, his jabs were so sharp and stiff, they can even knock you down. His jabs were like a mix of Ali's (speed, movements) and Liston's (power) combine.

Use the jab to control the distance, the pace and tempo of the entire bout, by landing at different angles, different speed, different intensity and different power.
Then, you can stay feinting it and throwing it in multiples and combinations.
You can even begin to disguise it!
It's absolutely the Premiere Weapon of the entire game.

There is no fighter in boxing history with a better left jab than the Easton Assassin. Some boxers had quicker jabs, some had heavier jabs, but Holmes delivered the jab with a frightening mix of speed and power. Larry also used the jab more than any boxer in history as evidenced by his penchant for dominating rounds without throwing a high number of hooks, crosses, or uppercuts. The effectiveness of his jab allowed his skill set (e.g., quick hands, good foot speed, varied punching arsenal) to flourish and if you add Holmes' top flight intangibles (e.g., excellent chin, huge heart, high boxing IQ), you have a boxer who dominated his division for 7 1/2 years and was never beaten in his prime.

Larry is the great teacher in there. Beating them to the punch. Understanding the seriousness of the situation. Hanging in there mentally during every minute even in the last of the late rounds. His ring generalship. The mechanics of that jab. He's trying to get you out of there like you stole something from him. I liked stuff he did with covering the opponents eyes with the glove hand out. As soon as that glove comes down there's a fist behind it. So much to learn from Larry Holmes.
