My in-laws are the ones that sold you this. Just want you to know how much joy you have brought to my father in law! He has watched the first video multiple times and now is very excited to watch this one. He always has a hard time letting go of his old toys and this time he got some joy out of it!
I like how he said the front wheel is sketchy so he didn’t want to go faster. I’m sitting here thinking that entire thing is sketchy and could give at any moment. Looks like something out of a mad max movie. Great video.
Nice job getting her going, I remember my 340 powered tri sport would pass cars on the highway, so it was at least worth 60 mph. Maybe 70 or 80 who knows lol. SCARY FAST is exactly what it was coming from a 90cc Honda floatation tire rig back in my day LOL
I should add I live in Northern Illinois where the whole area 10 counties wide is flatter than a pancake. Not too far from where I live was an old flat track race track called Sycamore speedway and I heard rumor they used to have classes for these racing there alongside motorcycles back in the day. I was told the original intent for these machines was flat dirt track oval racing, and they do it so well fishtails for days on gravel or dry dirt.. you will see. This is making me want another one at 49 years old LOL! Keep up the good videos you are inspiring!
That's awesome.. not just the trike but to what the commenter said about the joy it brought to his father in laws face. Maybe because he knows how it feels to ride a trike with a340cc 2 stoke motor . How fun is that !!! I bet it's incredible and with snow and it being cold.. might get a little pencil fingerd holding that throttle
Hey man. Thanks for making this content. Its obvious you just love doing this and its not for money. Thanks for no sponsors, or merch plugs, or advertisements. Ive only ever seen you shout out shops or people you do business with and i think that's so cool and honestly unique in this day and age. Keep up the good work joe and enjoy your toys man
Sweet trike man very cool! I noticed that the secondary clutch is stuck open, like wide open. If you get that to free up it will have tons more low end and the bog on take off will more than likely go away. Good content man I look forward to seeing your projects as you post them as I do similar things, keep up the good work. #crivitzwisconsin
We restored one of these in our garage 20 years ago. I remember my day getting pulled over racing it down the street. Same exact machine. It was so much fun
Looking back on the older 3-wheel ATVs and Trikes you repair it's easy to see how they were deemed death traps and discontinued. Imagine flying down the road at 60 MPH on that trike and your foot slips of the peg... not good. Love your channel! keep it up.
That red tail/ possibly turn signals built-in it. Takes either vA 1156,1157,2057 light bulb for it. I to looks be just A regular 1157,or 2057 blub to me. Those turn signals are the orange lights single power wire in the center.with body mount chassis ground bolts to the frame is all.
I had one of these from about 1988 to about 2005. I traded a 1971 Mercury Cougar XR7 for it. Mine was also the street version but had been stripped down. It had riding lawnmower style treaded tires for better traction and they worked like a champ. Went in sand, snow and everything. I also upgraded the motor to a 440 from the 340 CCW. My friend paced me on the highway one day in his Bronco at 93mph. It seemed maxed out. Wish I still had it.
I owned a few of these Three Wheelers when I was younger. They are fun but you need to get some good turf tires tires on this machine. Snow and ice is fun but no traction equals too high of RPMs and a blown piston. Ask me how I now.😬
Thoes clutches need some adjustment for sure, the second you hit the gas it should grab and SPIN thoes bald tiers, it seems you dont have the low end torque like it should, I have 2 of these, it should top out around 80mph if adjusted right, just play with the weights in the main clutch till you get it right where u like so you have low end and top end. Great job buddy. I also noticed ur secondary clutch is stuck open, def get that freed up and ull have the low end and get rid of the bog it has..
I used to have one of those when I was 12 years old. I bought it without a motor and we ended up putting a 3.5hp Briggs on it and it would go about 35 mph. Yours has a little more accessories on it than mine did. Mine just had the fiberglass part where ya sit but not over the motor. Anyway, I had a blast and wish I would've never sold it. Have fun 👍
Joe - I have subscribed for many, many many years (RD350 top speed runs) and have seen you grow your channel, grow your home life, seen Chuck grow into someone that could beat up on you, seen countless triumphs, and a few sad ‘cannot be saved’ videos; but, I have to say: there is no way to look cool on that silly thing. Congrats for your successes, Dude. I root for you every time, but watching that thing go is like watching 6’5” 240lb me drink a juice box…it’s a riot. I hope it’s as fun as it is funny.
I had a plastic model of one of these as a kid 1/25th scale. This had the fenders attached to the body with rear brake lights incorporated above the tires. I never saw the real thing, but day dreamed about delivering my newspaper route on one. Really like your anilital approach to effective diagnostics.
I have 3 1985 Honda gryo-S trike scooters.. 30mph street legal..at one time they all ran. But have sat for a few years... I'd love to find someone to fix them. But now I see this you have... I'd rather have one like yours...nice restore.
ooh this brings back some very old memories my neighbor had a similar "smaller" one that he let me drive "40 years ago" that thing is so much fun super stable on a flat road but if you hit a good bump with just 1 rear wheel at speed you will instantly know what true fear feels like and why they stopped making them you even have spare wheels on the (6x6) for much better traction on snow thanks for the memories dude
I’m pretty sure the centrifugal clutch is gonna let go soon. I have one that has been totally rebuilt. Also it’s running too lean on the low end but I like it. Very cool!
Built in Orillia Ontario Canada..in Orillia 1972 some guy pulled bunch us kids on snow sleighs on frozen lake simcoe.he had fat snow tires...it was a good time..fun memories..
Some brake calipers, and an electric starter, and some tuning on the carburetor, and on the CVT system. and socket added to the that taillight housing to accept an 1157 bulb, or an LED equivalent. and get the brake light circuit working. and get some really grippy tires, and maybe a second set of wheels for pavement tires. and you will have a killer vintage trike for on-off road use.
This thing is awsome. I've seen a few of these chassis laying around over the years. I never realized they were a road worthy vehicle. I always thought they were more of a go-kert yard -kart toy.
My Gyro had a tight turn radius and was a hoot to hide. It would only go 30 mph until I took a rat tail file and sandpaper to the exhaust port. Then it would go 35 mph, 40 downhill. It was the most fun machine I ever had. People at the Terminal Annex in Dallas would ride it in the parking lot at night.
Great machine and I am glad you got it running.I bought a metalic blue one with no engine a number of years ago and installed a 440 ski doo engine in it.I had to replace the chains and sprockets as they were badly worn so I added dual brake disks in the rear because the thing was plenty fast and sketchy to stop at best.
my old friend he used to build trikes, crazy big ones with jag v12 engine in one he built to a trike made from vey light tube with a 500cc 2 stroke yamaha engine in it looked like your trike but sightly bigger wheels and foot rests on the frame ,and double chain and sprocket set up because of power
I just went to Michigan and found one the guy put a 440 Yamaha enticer air cooled engine in, it was nice and fast and electric start, he was asking way too much and wouldn’t budge or I was taking it home, still considering it lol
Hey buddy now you need to see if you can find some new seat cover fabric the same color as what the back part of the seat is and make a seat cushion to sit on and then it would be finished!! If you can’t find the same color design and enough to redo all of it well then I definitely no that they make some black colored stuff and I would only make a bottom seat cushion one and just do it black in color!! That would definitely look good and also original also!!!?! And I also had the same issue with a snowmobile engine that I had on the 6x6 Argo that we used to have!!! The teeth for the pull start was all worn out!! I can’t remember what I ended up doing to fix it but what ever I did work!!! It’s been 25 years or longer since we had the 6x6!!! I definitely wish I had another one though for sure!!! Awesome video buddy!! And remember keep up all the hard work buddy!!!! Oh thanks for cleaning the camera lens off so that we could actually see when you was going down the road with the trick!!! Let us now if you are able to get a license to drive it on the road again!!??? I’d definitely love to see you driving it down the road in town also!!! I think that would definitely be sick and funny also!!!
I believe his comment was to mean he worries about the headlight on everything he gets.. I like headlights too I also like everything to work@@dopeman420
heck ya bro that's cool , 2 stroke with that size motor that thing should get up n move . i work on different kinds of bike as well .one of my favorite hobbies.
They are fast. I had one in1979. 28hp kolher engine. It would do around 100mph. Depending on type of tires on it. You can run voltswagon tires on the trip sport I had. Thank you for the video.
Dual carb's off a 340 sled with a pair of Mikuni Carb's would give you more top end and snap! Jetting would help also and the mix if it is 30 or 40 to 1 I would lighten it up to 40 or 50 to 1. Twin pipes adapted from a twin sled would help. "The Crank Shop" in VT is a good place to talk to about pipes and Al's Snowmobile in VT is a good place to get part's from for older sled's and older 2-stroke parts! Set of Wisco high compression Piston's would be a big help for power!
Hey I know how you could keep it weighted down to the ground.,or road while you're riding it fast to old house window weights with brackets welded on to them. DIY made for being tucked up close to the frame as much as possible. That are weld onto like bicycle seat types bolt clamps with through bolts.& Split washer's & locking nuts on the top& bottom of the shocks.,or the front forks shortened up to fit on both sides of it squared up to.
For the gas tank, try a windshield wiper fluid tank from an old car or radiator overflow tank. Either would work and they come in a multitude of sizes and shapes. Just thinking outside the box here...
I can picture some cool modifications. Tank, bodywork, handle bars and lights. May have to build one. Two cylinder, two stroke will make 150 horses for 10,000 miles.
Then you could do the same underneath the rear end of that to on both sides two smaller weights on different frame mounting brackets welded up for stability purposes.
I'd love to see someone do a good resto-mod on one of these. Keep it looking stock but upgrade the suspension and tires and put a modern snow mobile engine in it. The retro cool factor would be super cool.
What a fantastic machine stick some studs on them back wheels it will go anywhere. tried looking that trike up not a lot on the internet must be quite rare glad to see you putting new life into it.
It was a hoot watching you ride that thing! My buddy's dad had a 3 wheeler thing like that but it was smaller and had more of a go kart drivetrain. It was a sketchy ride!
Wow quite a toy, especially for drifting in the snow. We know from our own experience that going crazy on three wheels is a ton of fun. Although in our country the vehicles are mostly electric, the fun is still ahead
Nice trailer! We think alike ... I'm thinking weld some beads into the pull-starter and you say "I welded some beads into the pull starter". The whole time I was thinking "you will barely make it to the mailbox with that pocket bike tank", I guess I was wrong there. Also, I'm thinking "since we all know it needs tires before any real street riding can occur, you should throw some slime and a thousand self-tappers in those tires and play in the snow". That being said, I hope you do find an electric starter, fix the brakes and put a nice set of DOT tires on it. It seems like the CVT has quite the performance tune on it.
👏👏BRAVO you brought back an old ride. Love watching your repairs, and joy watching you ride. The tires looked a tad worn. Bet the reclining ride is strange.
You know what I'm just going to watch the video fully through and then put my two cents in cuz everything that I pretty much thought of you had mentioned later on in the video
It turns a lot better than I expected on snow, considering it's a posi rear. Might stop OK on dry roads with only front brake (if the pads are still pretty good) until you find a rear brake
Glad you got it running…. Sounds just like the one I had. I am curious what the top speed is, my speedometer never worked but it hauled. One thing to note is the rear tires are usually tubeless trailer tires and if you try to slide the back end around and the tires catch they have a habit of popping the seal against the rim.
Definitely need knobby tires and some kind of bead lock system. Even some kind of all terrain but smoother pattern like the honda atc had or john Deere gator.
Looks like you were Fred Flintstone taking the tri-sport for a rip, when you had your feet down. Ha, ha! It actually looks like a lot of fun! You have to get it road legal for a future video. Take care, and stay safe.
The Taillight on those looks to be an old style RV/Camper Taillight, and the bulb socket portion is missing and or broken, probably snapped out when someone tried to replace the bulb, they would rust and corrode in place. That one in particular looks like a SAE-STIALR-69 style light. You can still find them NOS online, or you could just upgrade to a modern LED equivalent camper/rv taillight.
Awesome Cool! I was thinking you cold have just used that red Jerry can as the actual gas tank. The clutch tesion on that belt could be adjusted to not require so much throttle I think. But I'm sure you will know if that's possible.
Hi Joe, just wondering if you could plastic weld some new plastic panels onto that gas tank to fix it, as I heard it works well, might be an option, worth a go to keep original tank maybe. 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️👍
Love the trike, put tires on like you have on the 6 wheel drive and go for the snow WOO HOO. oh and a small hint to hopefully make life easier stop using a screwdriver bit on hose clamps , a socket does not slide side to side when turning and some smaller clamps you don't need a socket at all the driver fits right on the clamp. So far I really like what you are doing keep it up
Be carefull you don't dent you truck tailgate on your new trailer jack when you open it. I have a similar trailer and had to move my jack back on the trailer tongue to avoid damaging my truck tailgate . New subscriber here ... really enjoy your video's!
Man that thing is sweet! I hope you get this thing on the street, my advice is when you go to the dmv, just act like its any other registration, don't draw any attention to the fact that it's a unique vehicle like this, act as of its just one of those Harley like motorcycle trikes. Ready to hit the road SAFELY. Good luck with this machine man that thing is so unique and bad@##. Also Think about putting a chrome FMF 2 stroke dirtbike pipe on it (with a silencer for the street) keep you out of trouble, then a set of those little DOT Hoosier tires for the rear and a DOT mini super moto for the front. Would be awesome 👌

Awesome!!
Clutch seems to be slipping a bit or how ever that cvt trans is working
I was born in 1979, and I remember way back when they used to have these trikes advertised in magazines for sale.
Only the good ones were born in 1979. I remember when these bikes were new and you could drive them anywhere.
@@TheHortond I have to agree, another good 79 one here, from the UK 👍👏🏴🍻

Stritch weld the tank with one those soldering tools. Fill the seams. Wrap in fiberglass.

Use the needle tip on that grease gun to get it into those tight spots.

That being said, I hope you do find an electric starter, fix the brakes and put a nice set of DOT tires on it. It seems like the CVT has quite the performance tune on it.
This thing looks like so much fun, I bet it’s a hoot to rip around on in the snow and ice 😂
I've rode and raced dirt bikes since the 70s, and I've never seen one of these!!
If you do break that Linds you can replace it with a pop-up camper lens it's just got yellow on left and Yellow on right
That thing is so bad ass , makes me want to look for one myself
👏👏BRAVO you brought back an old ride. Love watching your repairs, and joy watching you ride. The tires looked a tad worn. Bet the reclining ride is strange.
I have a frame of one of these sitting in the tall grass at my grandparents house. Never knew they ripped like this!!
That thing is awesome, never seen one,I bet a new belt that thing really haul, great save
A set of studded tires, and fenders all around, would be pretty cool for winter!
You know what I'm just going to watch the video fully through and then put my two cents in cuz everything that I pretty much thought of you had mentioned later on in the video
The trike is cool. The trailer is a nice one! Congratulations.
Sounds like my Arctic Cat Panther I had in 97'. That machine you have is awesome.
Just add some good quality tubes in the back, that should remedy that with out to much work.
Ya man that is a wicked toy. 2 strokes are so much fun. Great find.
Man if I saw this machine on the road I would want one in my garage it's so cool 😎
I bet a snowmobile motor on a go-kart would be crazy! I always wanted to do that when I was a kid!
This is the best channel on UA-cam
That thing just looks like a huge kick in the ass to ride around on! Thanks for a cool video!
Oh damn ! I saw some independent rear suspension action !
Yep had one with the 18hp Briggs would do 70mph loads of fun!
So far I really like what you are doing keep it up
They sure did build alot of funky machines back in the 1970's!! 🙂
Be carefull you don't dent you truck tailgate on your new trailer jack when you open it. I have a similar trailer and had to move my jack back on the trailer tongue to avoid damaging my truck tailgate . New subscriber here ... really enjoy your video's!
Looks like lots of fun. I would struggle to not modify it with some foot pegs and maybe a atc front end for the bigger front tire
First mods would definitely have to be better brake and tires for me!
It has foot pegs
Amazing video! Thank you for sharing! Hope you do alot more with this unit!
Need to change the weights in the pulley system and get it to lock up a bit quicker. That's a BEAST!
