Had many big wheels growing up as I used to love to ram the curb with the front wheel and as you know once it’s bashed in it’s a bumpy ride haha. I never seen these or knew about them back in the 80’s. This video came up in my feed and as a huge motorcycle and ATV enthusiast I had to check it out.

I had one of these back in '71-72. They could be ordered with a Tecumseh single cylinder 4 cycle engine in 12 or 16 HP, or a Kohler 2 cylinder 2 stroke 'snowmobile' engine in 290cc or the one you have, 340cc. Mine was the 290 and would easily do almost 80mph. I had one of the first 100 they built and the early frames weren't welded up on a jig, so everything warped a little as it cooled. I could not keep bearings on the rear axle. They wouldn't last 150 miles before burning out. Even replacing the junk Roberts brand bearings with good Fafnir or SKF bearings didn't help much. The Kohler engines were not durable either, though Kohler did make improvements to them in time and they became much more reliable. I bitched and moaned to the dealer and the company for months, and they finally gave me a new one. They sent a Tecumseh 16 hp one to replace it. Not as fast at just 70mph, but easy to start and sooo much better on gas. It did vibrate like crazy over 60. I had a motorcycle and the Allsport Trisport was for my wife so we could ride together. She couldn't learn to drive a 2 wheeler but was okay driving the 3 wheeler and we could take our kid on either. I made foot pegs and a seat pad that went in front of the regular seat on the Trisport for the kid. Mine was new and it was very stable and comfortable on the road. I put knobby rear tires on it and it tried to keep up with my friend's snowmobiles in Winter. It did okay in snow of an inch or two, but in deep snow was worthless. Use a hydraulic motorcycle front brake caliper for the rear brake. You will have to build a bracket to mount it over the disc. Getting parts will be impossible as the company went out of business in the mid 1970's. Turn signal switch and other broken stuff you can adapt motorcycle parts. The speedo will be a problem. You need new bushings in the front fork. That little wobble is not normal, nor good. Make them yourself from parts you can get from a major industrial supply company like Grainger or McMaster-Carr. Good luck with your Trisport, they are fun, just don't expect a lot from an old tired thing that was always just a cheap poorly built machine.

I would restore this rig if I owned it, if they're not too rusted get the chrome bits re-chromed. People say its too expensive but I used to be chrome plater back in the early 89's and there's a lot of hand labor that goes into the job, the chrome has to be stripped with nitric acid down to bare metal but this thing would be stunning when complete. Even the aluminum parts of the shocks seem to non-anodized which means they'll buff out real sweet.

Most terrifying experience ever as it rattled and vibrated down the bumpy dirt road. complete blast though

Obviously finish the rear brakes, then I would put some tires on the rear that are about 2" larger in diameter, in the front I'd want the largest diameter i could get without causing the front end to sit real high (the really sweet setup would be a shorter inverted front fork with wheel, brake, and tire all sourced from a sportbike). The larger diameter would increase stability especially when going over bumps which combined with a steering stabiizer will get rid of a lot of twitchyness. Then once it feels safer some porting on the cylinder, a high compression head gasket, a quality aftermarket expansion chamber and pipe, along with a little more carb and you can easily push 100. In fact if you get creative and work some reed valve/blocks to help tune scavenging even better you could put it well over 100. Of course at some point you just take a Yamaha Banshee back half plus Engine /trans assembly with some aftermarket parts and go hit 130 mph in the 1/4 mile with an 11 second ET....

I'm 52 years old and honestly I have not accomplished many of the things I thought I would have by now but I can say Ive wasted a lot of time and most of my money making things go faster, most of the time a lot faster, than they should ever go. I specialized in Harleys, from street hot rods to drag bikes to Top Fuel Nitro Harleys. Ive won, Ive set records, had fun, got hurt, gone broke, got old. Now I've scaled back. Ive glot a Baja Warrior Minibike (the fat tire minibike at tractor supply or several other outlets ) that had a 196cc single with 6 hp stock and a 24 mph top speed and stuffed a modified 16 hp Briggs and Stratton Vanguard Vtwin (about 22 hp after modifications )that currently tops out at 78. My goal is 100 with no multispeed transmission and once I meet that then i get serious and put the 5 speed Honda transmission in it and more modifications to the engine, frame, front end, etc... and see how fast I can go while keeping some resemblance to a minibike. If you want to see a video I have a single video on my UA-cam channel, dou a UA-cam Search for Buck Kowalski. Its a pretty cool (I think so anyway ) 36 second video that shows a bit of what I'm doing with a nice smoky tire burning burn out and a fairly high speed pass by the camera. If you watch it Id appreciate it if you let me know in the comments what you thought about it and what content youd like to see. Thanks.

    "Fantastic"
Didn't know there was street legal
    version.
My dad bought me the little go-cart
    style one.
When I was kid for a 100 bucks at a yard sale.
    No suspension, little 8hp Tecumseh
    that I blew up,
because I tied a string to the govner.
Then later replaced with a 220cc out of a SkiDoo Snow Pony.
    Top speed after the swappins.
Clocked by my Dad following me in his ole blue Ford.
    73mph
That top speed was also a secret between me and my Old Man.
I was ten at the time, and my Mom
sure as hell wouldn't a been to happy 😉

A new spring from any hardware store should only be a few bucks to fix the chain tensioner. I’d get it tagged and insured so you can take it to the store. It would be funny to see how many cops pull you over for riding around town.

70 sounds about right... Not sure if it was that exact model but we built a Dune buggy thing back in the day in high school basically cut the back end off of one of those added a roll cage and a couple front tires with suspension and a steering wheel basically... It had had 340 to, we had really good carburetors on it... And it was fast... extremely fast! Our teacher said we could only push the pedal down about a quarter throttle or so... It was just too much! Our football coach was always sneaking over to the shop and checking on the project when we were building it asking when you're going to get it done. He was always interested in it, saying he would test it if we ever got it done. Well we already knew how fast it was already and when we threw the football coach in hes like is it fast??? We were like oh no no it's pretty slow just floor it have some fun it's pretty mild... Well coach put on a football helmet on lol and he punched it he rocketed from one end of the practice field to the other In like a split 2nd, he turned it sideways and about rolled it... Came back and said oh so it's pretty mild huh... 🤣😂🤣

1960'S thru 1970'S set-up on that to work. Unless you can get the newer speedo cables that come with those conversion kits for older speedo adapter inserts in the kits.

Guys, a buddy of mine used to daily drive one of these things ! Of course he only lived about 8 miles from work. I doubt that he got it much over about 50 mph , but it would do more. Steering got squirrelly over that though.

Interesting video. Fun watching it zoom around at highway speeds without flying apart in a hail of shrapnel. One thing though. You came dangerously close to running over your dog on a few occasions riding around the property. Maybe keep him in the house when you do that for safety's sake. I'd hate to see him get hurt.
