"What can you expect for 100 bucks?" A good tank that's not rusty, an engine that runs, brakes okay, clutch okay. Personally I think it was a steal.
Its a clean bike, hes making it seem like its not for a video..
@@Tha1On3it’s a lot rougher than you think, clutch hard to pull in, grip and lever missing on right side, bars bent, pipe with huge dent in it, incorrect air filter, seat pan extremely rusty and seat not held on by anything, and just dusty and greasy in general. Sorry for the long rundown of that bikes issues but it makes sense to go that far into something.
@@Callofdutyjoey its clean compared to the shit ive brought back, thats a weekand cleanup
@@Tha1On3 Yup, if it runs and shifts...strip it down to parade rest..replace the things that need replacing..and still make $ on it(if he sells it..Does Joe sell anything?) Free labor...and actually make $ via YT.
Be a neat WE blast around bike.
@@gpw203 Even with the dent if the tank is ok inside it's still worth a couple-hundred bucks. I have a 76 IT400 project I bought from a guy in October of last year that's about as rough or rougher than this thing. But it'll be worth it once I've gotten around to fiddling with it. He modified the engine mounts to take a DT400 engine but included the IT400 engine in the sale. It has its' original plastic tank but the cap threads are broken off so I'll need to find a way to put those back on. He put forks from an 80's era YZ250 on it so now it has disk brakes on the front. It's a lump right now but it'll be worth it in the end. :)
It was summer 1979 I was 17 and bought my first bike, a 1975 DT 400 enduro!, for the next two years you couldn't wipe the smile off my face ! Thanks for the memories
I'm 16 and bought the it 400 and I fell the same way
I got the same bike from my friend when I was a teenager. His neighbor gave it to him for free and he didn't know how to work on it so he gave it to me. It was seized up and I'll never forget my dad saying "we really shouldn't do this, it's not the right way" and giving the kickstarter a firm whack with a sledgehammer, after letting some WD-40 soak in the cylinder. Broke loose though! It was magical hearing that beast run for the first time. For my 13th birthday my dad got me a new cables and what not to get rideable. Those were the days. I thought I had the fastest bike in town until my buddy with a newer RM 125 absolutely smoked me 😂 I was drooling over his inverted forks. Sorry for the long story but if you made it this far thanks for reading
The nice thing about these DT400's is since it's pretty much the same engine used in the IT400 and YZ400 besides the engine base you can just swap a YZ400 cylinder and piston on to it to make it spicier. The DT's were tuned for low end pull for when out in the trails. The YZ400 had all the oomph to it being a race bike and all.
I'm not exactly following you? Swapping out cylinder and piston can be done by bore job and oversize piston. Changing connecting rod will change stroke and cylinder head might change compression ratio.rejetting carb or different carb usually is included to improve performance after Changing stock specs
@@DaveDeline I’m guessing he is talking about the YZ cylinders having different port timing…… which is a thing.
You have made my new year’s morning in London Town 💪😊
So good to hear! Have a happy new year!
I am 62yrs old and just got back into two stroke dirt bikes. As a teen in the 70's, I had a Bultaco Lobito 175 and Suzuki RM125. Got into cars in '79 and never had another dirt bike until this summer. I bought a '78 Bultaco 370 Pursang from the original dealer we bought parts from in the 70's and also a '74 Bultaco 250 Alpina project for $300 from a private party. New rings, circlips and carb and she is up and running. Nothing beats the sound and smell of a two smoke! Love your videos BTW! 👍
Love Bultaco’s. I have a few Alina’s 85, 97 138 and a 159 Sherpa and a 75 matador . They ride well.
When I was 12 my dad got me a mid 70's model Bultaco 250 Pursang. Rode the crap out of that thing for a couple of years. Would love to have another one just for the nostalgia.
Graduated in 77 had a bull taco. Fun times also had a Suzuki 250 2 stroke. Fast shit back then.
see my post above if you like vintage bikes. want to see them race.
@@RonaldHawes-sr3cr When I finish the Alpina 115, I will be looking for another Bul project. Just love the brand and what they accomplished in a short amount of time. Wish I was older when they were in their heyday. These Alpinas will almost idle up a mountain, gobs of low end torque. When I get in mood to go fast, the 370 Pursang just screams acceleration!
Naw guys stop hating on this jewel . I have a 79 and this bike is a beast and you can find most of the parts . For 100 bucks you can dump almost 2K into this build and still come out way ahead .
Absolutely. Even just a couple of hundred would get it rideable with fenders. It is worth putting 2K into as well. Shred beast.
Missing fenders and dented pipe after hitting a car! Apparently no mice or critters in your area unless it's been kept inside a well sealed heated garage. Doesn't take Columbo to look at the condition of the seat and front forks ,wheel to cry foul.still bad ass 2 stroke non the less.
Good to know Shop Manager Vinnie is supervising at all times 👍
Joe, thanks for the ride down memory lane, I had a 1975 DT400, I wish I had it today !!
To get the dent in the exhaust pipe out you can use the leak down test kit you used the other week. Put bungs in both ends of the exhaust and inflate to about 4 lbs (very low pressure) then heat the dent with a blow lamp. I used to use an oxy acetelene torch which is much better but that steel is thin and should heat up to red hot quickly with a blow lamp. Use MAP gas as it gets hotter than propane. The dents come out like magic. You can make you own rubber bungs to do this or even temparary weld over the end of the pipe and use a tyre valve. I have seen this tried on petrol tanks but dont do that. They spread open from the centre and it ruins them. I have done this myself and Ive seen many bikes on your channel that would benfit from this. It would make a good video. Regards from Marcus in England
I was laughing 😊with Joe at the end when he was describing the ride . How the dirt, gets him in the face and the back I’m giggling with him. I wonder if we get a part 2 on the rest of his fix list. He doesn’t have time for fun with that literally dirt bike. 😅😊😊
Yes I look forward to part 2 🎉🎉🎉🎉
For the pipe. you can drill a hole or 2 or 3 on the good side of the pipe large enough to get a brass or steel drift in and use it to knock the pipe back out and into the shape you need. Then weld the holes back up when done.
or fold a bicycle innertube in half and use a wire hanger with a U bend on one end pinch to the tube so can jam it up the pipe. Pump up the innertube and unbent :) but can cause cracks sometimes depending how bad the dent is, but 95% of the times works pretty well for not much work.
Yea some cap off the ends and drill a hole for a valve stem
And inflate the pipe itself 😅
@@TravisRoxU It would have to be hydraulic as air would not do it.
@grabir01 , they pressurize the pipe then use a torch to heat the dented area. ( kit not required if you make your own )

@@kevinlangley3782 Got ya.
70s Yamahas were great fun in my youth.I miss those days since now I'm old and can't ride any more.
too old to ride ! no way , find a way ! maybe 3 wheeling Love riding
DT250 1974 here. First bike. Though it was really fast till the yz's and rm's came out a few years later. First street bike was a 74 H1, bought it used in 81 for $500, thought that was fast too, my buddy challenged me to a drag a few years later on his new used rm 250, I lost again. Bless you 2stroke.....bless you. 😌👊
Identical to my YAMAHA DT 250 F, bought it fresh out of the army in 1980 .Lovely bike , never had a single problem with it.Kept it for 16 years. The exhaust end on the bike in this video, is not the original and i thought i saw the 2 stroke oil delivery line been cut.Probably uses premix instead.A tonne of fun this bike , have the best memories .
I had a DT400 way back in the day (circa 1980). Brought back memories.
Here in Australia, that bike would be a minimum of $2,500. $100 is just insane to me.
It's a fake video, way to clean and intact for that price. Unless owner died and left it to a crackhead!!!
What do you mean? Me and my brother got a 50 dollar 4 wheeler that doesn't run and needs work
I don't know where you live in Australia but the drugs must be good to spend 2500 au dollars on a piece of sh$?T that needs a full restoration and thousands of dollars spent on it, I'm in country Victoria Australia 100 bucks sounds about right.
@@darrenashley126 well sometimes you get good deals so
@@DaveDeline no it's not. I could find a half dozen bikes like that priced from free to $250
Love the 70s early 80s..life was free and bikes where beasts..be safe.peace
Exactly I was 16 and made an 80 PE 250 street legal road it to highschool in 84 '85, unfortunately class L license restrictions where 175 cc. Max for my age and police had me pushing it more than once.i traded it in for 84 650 nighthawk took the state sponsored rider safety course to get class M and first week out on nighthawk I was behind a trailer with my old P.E. .I installed Answer aluminum silencer and it still had the homemade plate bracket which I confirmed was my bike i traded in. .honda dealer gave me 400 on trade. And at 13 I had kawasaki kd125 oil injected that I don't remember giving away.talk about long stories.
Happy Monday! My first ever motorbike was a Suzuki TM 400, that thing was a beast! Looking forward to see this one back to running.
I graduated from HS in 1977 and those bikes were everywhere. I can still smell the smoke. Great job Joe.😆
My first street legal dirt bike was a '74 Yamaha DT 360 (green tank). It would climb steep hills just above an idle. Plenty of torque.
I had one just like it 1977, bought it in the early 80's, it had about 2k miles on it and was in mint condition. Loved it. Found another one, a 1975 was given to me. Got it running great. One day I was adjusting the timing and got it to run backwards for a bit. How cool, had reverse. Lol. Nothing like the smell of 2 stroke exhaust. Nice work resurrecting that bike.
Old Yamaha is a treat. Especially for $100. It runs good. 👍
I had the 76 MX400 and the engine looks and sounds like mine did. Hold on and prepare to be amazed if you ever get into the power band. I ran 6oz oil to the gallon.
On behalf of all your viewers, this probably one of the best UA-cam channels going! Your wife is a Saint allowing you to give so much to your channel. I hope you find time to give her a similar amount of attention.
Joe takes excellent care of Jade. She's great!
Joe has the new Christmas tools out!!!
Those yamaha dts and mxs are amongst some of the best bikes ever made. As reliable as 2 stroke can ever be. Years of problem free riding in those things. The big bores are torquey and fun. Keep the wheels turning on those old machines man
Hi Vinny glad you could make it 😊
Another great job getting an old bike running! What a hilarious story the seller told about being hammered out of his mind, showing off in front of his buddies, and then getting impaired. The guy is a legend, but after his fifth impaired charge, he might have some addiction issues… LOL! Don’t worry about the front forks being locked up solid-it doesn’t matter when you’re in a wheelie in every gear!🤣
My dad's good friend bought a big bore Yamaha 2 stroke when they first came out in the '70's. He's got some hysterical stories about what an absolute animal that bike was, especially when everyone else was riding 125cc or maybe 250cc machines.
My friends brothers friend let me ride one a Yamaha before they were designated YZ. Not sure which one. I was only 12 or 13. That thing was really touchy on the throttle so I sped up into 5th and then goosed it without the clutch. It came way up on a wheelie. Scared the crap out of me!!
Used to have a 1976 Suzuki rm370 I bought off a buddies dad for $400. That bike was scary fast even though it was worn out a bit.
We ended up swapping it into a Suzuki 250r quad frame which made it even more crazy. Love seeing these old bikes get brought back to life.
This bike has a cable operated compression release. Did you check the function of it? Take the exhaust pipe off, drill small holes and center punch the dented part out and weld up the holes. Used pipes start at $200.
$100 is a gift! This is a real beauty, I love bikes so much! It's probably because I built it in '63. I would choose this bike over a modern bike any day, you can still feel the heavy metal, pure power. You have to be able to ride something like that. 400ccm and two-stroke, it really takes off. Pure riding pleasure. My favorite bike at the moment is the new German 2025 Maico 700 two-stroke, 61hp, the SuMo variant of the current 680? two-stroke...!!! Maico weighs 101 kg and has 80hp! That's pure power and nostalgia paired with modern technology. Unfortunately I'm too old for a monster like that and I would probably die with it. Just too many nm, you need muscles and flexibility, that's not so easy at 60. Italian 300cc 2t is enough for me.Fantic engine 2023
Fantic XE300 2T 50 hp is still great with 2t.
That’s a familiar sound! I had the 1975 DT 400. It had the classic Yami black and yellow tank. Great bike and a fun low end beast of a bike. Used it in dirt, trails, roads and highways. Great memories
Yeah this is a very sweet deal for 100 bucks no matter condition.
Lots of potential. Forks can be disassembled and probably just clean and de-rust to get working again. Maybe a swap later but they can at least move with a rebuild.
Bars are easy to straighten or of course just replace. Definitely worth getting fenders for it. Rebuild or replace the seat pan, a few other details and she's ready to rip.
This bike was a total beast in its day! You can find restorations on cycle trader all the time! Very nostalgic bullet proof motors
I had one of those back in my 20s. I am 65 now.I remember that thing was The most scariest fun I ever had.
Thanks for another great video.Happy new year everyone
Thanks for another great year of 2vintage. HAPPY NEW YEAR.
There is nothing like the sound of a 2 stroke. The video brings me back to the good old days when all dirt bikes, moto cross bikes were 2 stroke. Its rough but wow! What a fun bike.
My very first bike was a '77 DT250.....what a beast..
My wife and I got a good chuckle when you said that had to be the sketchiest bike you've ever ridden! She and I used to ride some wackos back in the day.
I don't know how you get lease bikes for soʻ cheap. You truly amaze me
Wow , sounds like the same story I had with my 1977 yz400 , cops didn't like me driving it in the city 20 years ago lol , "one old" video on my UA-cam page , fuel tank falling off when driving.
She was SO fun!! I ended up parking it after a police chase and parted her out on ebay.
Had to write when you mentioned the breaking leg..I had a 360 Yamaha enduro back in the 70's and if you didn't know HOW to get your leg out of the way when kicking it over it would kill the back of your knees and calf's..black and blue most of the time..wicked fast and a whole lot of fun to ride
Only 5 Dui's ( felony 😳 lol. Maybe he can watch you fix his old bike on the kiosk from prison 😂. Nice pickup🔧Joe. Have a happy & safe new year everyone 🍾🥂 2025 away we go 🎬👍🫡
After 5 it's just a continue on sir you're having more fun than any one would ever have salute jk dang 5 lol
That place looks like an old airfield we used to ride at in Milbrook NY. I had a 77 DT 250 , Grey. Very fast for a 250. One thing, beware of the injector pump for the 2 stroke oil. They are notorious on the DT's.
I'm guessing the old drunk guy doesn't realize $100 in 2024 isn't worth anywhere near what is was in 1978.
Yeah, but it'll still get him a few cases of beer.
What a great buy for a $100 bucks! I just bought a 1990 Yamaha Phazer II with electric start snowmobile for a $100 bucks. It ran when I got it but just needed a few cosmetics done to it. Runs great and looks great now. Good to know good finds are still available!
Monoshock suspension with a cantilever frame, a good bike in its day with plenty of power

I just bought a similar vintage IT400 for $200 but it came with a full set of new plastics from DC plastics 😊
I’d love to know where you guys find these deals.
All I ever see, are guys that think their junk is worth gold.
@edsyphan3425 we buy it within 10 minutes of it being posted online. I assume Joe has Jade checking online for home throughout the day or something.
I had one of those IT 400's.....
Great bike, loads of fun.....
@@glennwoods2462 I look forward to getting it going. I got it cheap because it won't shift into anything other than first. Came with a ton of new parts to fix it. Just need to get through all the bikes in its way first 😂
I had 1975 DT 400. What a great bike..I wish I still has it. These bikes were incredibly so durable . Built tough to last with great power. 2nd gear was amazing bring back great memories seeing this today🙂🛵
i'm a 2stroke tuner, these engines have the most effective power between 9 and 12k rpm, you'l be surprised what happens if you hit that 9k rpm :))) the reedvalves are leaking, but are still good enough, just flip them around, best way to get that flat dent out of the exhaust is pumping it up with a greasegun, block both ends of the exhaust as close as possible to the part you want to fix, weld on a little nut on the pipe with a little hole for the greasegun, fill the pipe first with grease, then just pump it up, works great, finding a replacement can be quite hard for this bike, cleaning is easy, might want to run if after cleaning for like 20 minutes without the muffler, to get all the grease out, and dont mess up the muffler, no need to remove the greasegun nipple
That 400 engine was based off the earlier YZ 400 engines....detuned of course....I bet it had a peak HP of 30 at 5k....I think the carb is only 36mm
NONE of what you just typed is remotely correct. Please stop calling yourself a "tuner", my lord......
If you subtracted 6k rpm off of this guys power band above it would be a true statement.
Lots of people have been surprised when those hit their power range. That's why most of them are wrecked.
did you see his welds??? Not sure this plan will work.
That DT400 was a beast with some porting, raised compression and a after market pipe. One thing to know is oil injection pump is very prone to failure. What was usually done, was just go to pre mix and save the engine. I can’t remember if I removed the pump or just made a block off.
I don't think the bike was the seller's problem.
😂😂
55 now.I was last on a bike in 84..Rode a lot of different bikes as a kid..Enjoy seeing you repairing some of the models that I had fun on.
Should get another bike, you know, like all of us- it's in our blood from childhood days riding.cheers
65 now and also last on a bike in 84. Not a dirt bike but a 1977 red/black RD400.
I just enjoy the journeys in the videos.
I don’t know how you find these deals! Everything I find under $800 needs a top end or is missing half the parts and the condition of the engine is a total gamble.
I've learned so much on your channel Joe. Thank you! I hope you had a good Christmas. Happy New to you and all the other watchers out there from Minnesota! Stay safe!
Fantastic. Cannot wait to see PT2.
Them DT series are one of the best models Yamaha have ever made. They are just very reliable. That is why you can still buy them brandnew in some countries like Columbia, the 125 and 175's. Mine is a 1998 125 in stock form and never had a repair in it's lifetime except for having replaced a new piston ring and brakeshoes. All lights are intact and still runs great.
That's a good bike but if you can ever find a 1979 YZ400 you'll be amazed how totally awesome they are.. they are just something to experience 👍💯😁
The '79 was a one year only bike, hard to get parts for.
Had the chance to buy one when I was 16. Probably wouldn't be here today if I did!
Good morning! Another goodie! Don't forget to sell me the Bridgestone. It's warm here in Texas . God bless you and Jade!

Drool !! I think a dt400 is a street bike. At 2 minutes in I couldn't be more excited; bucket list bike for sure. More Vinny please.....😊
$100 - What a bargain !😁
For such a rough state starting off I thought you'd have more problems but the bike definitely deserves some love. I could see the angle of the handlebars when you were going straight, way off lol, and you could see the mud flying from the camera you were wearing. Great bike in my opinion and could be way better. 👍❤️
$100 is an insane deal. That baby will flyyyy with a custom pipe
I had a 74 dt360 we picked up for $200 when i was 16, only thing it needed was a carb clean it was glazed , and clutch plates were stuck. I disconnected the yamaha oil system, Ran pre mix , cleaned the rusty tank and it ran for a while started every time super reliable bike. I'd buy another today if i can find one. Good find.
those oil injection systems were junk, did the same thing, ran premix, and had my buddies dad cut the tank and welded it up with a harley tank to get almost 5.5 gallon tank on my 360. could go all day without a fillup, missed that bike, sold it for a yz465 and that was a beast
Love these bikes, so many memories.👍
Im watching your videos since A week maybe, now i really wanna buy a bike that cheap and try to fix it myself. Great man. Thanks to you!

Joe, this was a bargain for sure! Congrats! Yamaha 250 twins absolutely dominated the 250 Road Racing class for many years! That 400 should be a monster once you sort out the forks and other details!
Brilliant bike 👍👍

Love your channel as a retired engineer living in the UK I watch your channel with interest keep up the good work my only concern is could you please clean down the projects before you start work as the crap can get inside the casings ect and as an ex apprentice mechanical engineer I hate dirt on any parts lol
Great video joe, this channel is the best on UA-cam! Don’t have to deal with someone pushing anything like AG1 or some kind of cash back app for buying gas, your family must be very proud of your hard work!
Please make a full restoration video for this bike..

Any "good" mechanic will clean before disassembly!
Then it would not be 'vintage' any longer. Anyway, it's only a 100 hundred dollar dirt bike.
Oh yeah, when the powerband opens up, sometimes it takes the back fender right off in a snap. An expensive plastic snap, lol.
Mu KX250 had a fender from a 480. 🤣 Yeeehaw! Stand up, and let her go, bouncing on that back knob, random strangers on pickup tailgates, giving you a round of applause. Ah yes, beautiful memories. Thanks for the ride!

When I was a kid I had a 78 DT400.
Best hill climbing bike i ever had. Had the compression release and everything the same. Well I had fenders, but yeah. Hill climbing monster!
Back in 1977 I bought a 1974 Suzuki TM 400. The bike was a blast & fixing it was wicked easy.
I had a '78 DT125. Was a great dual purpose bike. Had the same color scheme. Would go through pretty much anything. Road it for years on and off the road.
I had a 1977 DT100, great bike! Looks like the exact same tank/colours as this bike
I bought a 77 DT 250 in 96. IT was in great shape, still in original condition with all the gauges. it was only missing the turn signals. I paid $175. With a clean title. I definitely regret selling it , best running bike I ever owned. Started first kick even if it sat for months.
Sitting for 7 years then cold start and revving to the moon, that's our Joe :)
Those early DT Yamaha's are virtually indestructible. I had a 78 DT 125 E you couldn't kill it, and as a 15 yr old, I sure tried.

I know nothing about this channel. Been following for a while now. I'm guessing that Joe either works for a dealership from home or is related to people who own one. Too many bikes/vehicles pass through his hands to explain otherwise, though I could easily be mistaken. He may also have a dealer's license himself. Not sure what the laws are in WI. concerning how many bikes you can sell in a year if there's even a limit. I just know that he doesn't need to market them to the viewers, since there's never an offer to sell any of them, and all offers to buy seem to go completely ignored. Great channel!
Another grey bike pal thanks for the post they don’t make bikes like these anymore. Would love to see this bike completely restored back the way it was when it was new. Truly an amazing bike and to find it for $100.00 I think the blue will only go up. Love watching these videos.
You've got a great work ethic, good for you and your viewers. I enjoy the channel and every project.
When I saw this thing I thought it was a YZ with a DT tank, but you say it is a stripped dt to look like a yz ... amazing period for Yamaha ... it nearly changed history, single shock reeds and spread of power instead of on/off switches
My brother got me the Ridgid 18v extended reach cordless ratchet for Christmas this year. I have been wanting one of those things for a couple years now, just haven't gotten around to getting on, haven't had an actual 'job' to justify buying one, it's mostly my Hondas I work on (van and a Pilot) they've got SO MANY 10mm bolts hidden back where they're a bummer to reach and are always 4 inches long threads.. but yeah man, that cordless ratchet is SUCH a great addition to the toolbox!!
Ol' Joe loves his dirrtbikes. Another classic in good shape, now let's tear it apart. BRAVO, good diagnostics and quick repair
