5 Story Building - Backbone of the SLC

- This is the second video in the 5 story building project, where we take a look at the structure of the SLC loops in the building. We discuss the riser feeds and returns, the benefits of a style 6 loop, isolator modules, conduit layouts, and other topics.

I've interfaced with a few BMS or BAS systems in the past with different fire panels. The problem with a video like that is it's so panel-specific that it may not be useful to a wide audience. It's also very situation-specific. In addition to that, I feel like I would have a ton of videos to make before I'd be close to something that advanced, and unfortunately I'm rarely motivated to make any progress on the videos I already have planned.
Hi, is there any equipment or tool to test a smoke/heat detector unit w/o connect it to any control panel devices?

Good to see you still making helpful content... can you demonstrate troubleshooting a ground fault? I heard it is best to use a analog meter rather than a digital.
He already has a video doing that.
I have a video on troubleshooting grounds faults already. I've heard people discuss the benefits of an analog meter when tracing them, but I've never used one and can't speak to that. For the vast majority of ground faults the digital multimeter works great.

I have a question for you. What happens if during a power outage, an fcps batteries run out and the fcps completely powers down, but the FACP still has battery life and It sends alarm signals to the inputs on the powered down fcps ? Would this damage the fcps? Thanks

Check out video 5. It covers fans and doors with an MR-201. Dampers would be done the same way.

Home run simply means a wire pull all the way back to the panel. If you're at a device with a wire labeled "home run", that's either your feed or return to or from the panel.

Hi Joe, Great explanation. I have an issue with NFS-320 "Trouble in System" Alarm, it is appear on the display "No Device on L1". This panel is used for energized 4 solenoid of CO2 Vent Snuffing dan 2 pressure switch inputs. Coule you help me to figure out how to fix it, is it related with SLC? Please guide me with simple steps if you don't mind. Thanks a bunch.
That trouble means the panel has no points programmed. When you take that panel out of the box and power it up, you'll get that trouble. It knows that it needs some devices on the SLC in order for it to do anything, and currently there are no points programmed. You could connect a device and auto program it, but it should be programmed via the software and then the devices need to be connected to the SLC.
Joe, have you considered making a patron service where people pay you a monthly payment to have access to any new training videos you would make? I know i would sign up
I don't think I could commit to making a video each month. I think I'd run out of things to cover, and I just haven't been in the mood to make videos lately. I tried a donation link once, but you have to use a UA-cam-approved partner, and most of those weren't good. The one I used got one donation and then seemed to go under or something, so they just kept that money. That's never been why I made the videos, although if the videos made more money I would be motivated to make more. I just don't think there'd ever be a big enough audience to be worth very much.
Do you have anything on wiring up a PIV to an FMM with a surge protector?
I do not, but the surge protector would be just in and out, very simple, and the PIV would be similar to any other valve tamper. Checkout the video on wiring devices to sprinkler systems for that.
Question: If style 6 and a short occurs, all other devices either side still work... so why the need for a line isolation module?
Nothing will work if a short occurs on style 6. If there's a short, all of the current (technically not ALL, but for all intents and purposes, all current) will take the path of least resistance. No devices will work on any type of circuit if there's a direct short. That's why the iso mods are needed. They isolate the section that's sorted. That's why they're used in pairs.
Love all your videos. Why is there only 1 SLC returning to the FACP when you have 7 loop cards? Shouldn’t there be 7 SLC leaving the FACP and one less SLC one each floor moving up?
Yes, that's what I tried to explain but I may have not done a great job doing so. You'd have 7 leaving and 7 returning, but what I was trying to explain was that on the 1st floor there'd only be 6 loops in the Riser and return, 2nd floor 5, etc. There would be 7 leaving and 7 returning though.

Joe you say all the devices are in parallel, however from the sketch they look like they are in series. Am I not seeing it correctly?
Well, if you see this as a series circuit, how would it be wired in parallel?
To me, a series circuit would be as follows (I'll try to explain it without a picture):
Picture a battery powering light bulbs. The positive terminal of the battery is wired to a light bulb, then a wire leaves that bulb and goes to the next bulb. Then a wire leaves that bulb and goes to the next bulb. And that goes on until a wire leaves the last bulb and returns to the negative terminal of the battery.
Many times you refer to the acronym SLC. What does that stand for?
SLC = Signaling Line Circuit
Most manufacturers use that term for their data loops, the circuits that communicate with all the addressable devices.

Hey Jen, I've done a few things like that in the past, and it can be a little tricky to do depending on your level of experience. I'd be happy to answer any specific questions you may have, but I don't think it'd be practical to give you all the info you'd need if you haven't done it before. Hopefully you're at least working off of drawings?
How exactly do you choose to use four core or two core? Which criteria is considered?
Usually that's determined by the type of building and local codes. The technician doesn't decide which to use.

SLC is a data signal. It's two way communication between smart devices and the panel.
