My husband and I moved our home and my quilting/crafting space starting in July from CO to TX, and we finally got our last load the last week of September. I packed all fabric in XL really durable moving bags. I used MadameSew bags to organize projects along with plastic project bins that fit perfectly in lg moving boxes w/fabric padding on the bottom on sides. We took my machines and long arm in our truck that we pulled a U-Haul trailer behind w/other things we didn’t want getting broken or missing. We had movers pack a POD. They did a wonderful job, and all my ikea shelves, etc made it in one piece. They also unloaded the POD at our new house. I’m still getting things organized, but it’s all out of bags and boxes. I hope I don’t ever have to do it again!! Hugs to you both and hope you get settled soon Ian❣️

I just moved from west coast to east coast and absolutely over packed my stash. We didn’t know where we would end up so my boxes were held for months by the movers. I tallied 300 total boxes of which 5 boxes were kitchen, 7 boxes were clothing and 76 boxes were crafting supplies.😝

I’m so glad to have stumbled upon your new podcast- both of your content is new to me. My moving suggestion is to label well. I live and sew on two continents. I packed up my Asian stuff and stored it about 9 months and only partially unpacked when I got back (temporary situation). I couldn’t find my sewing machine in storage! It wasn’t a great machine so I ended up buying a new and improved one- and then of course discovered the old one packed inside an unlabeled suitcase-oops. It all worked out😅.

That is a great tip! I did my best to label label label and I still feel like there are things I don’t know where they are.

Watching y'all while binding quilts and y'all's energy together is awesome! Ian, listening to you talk about quilting out of a van makes be think of Rob Appell and his videos where he quilts while camping. Listening to the trials of moving is reminding me of my parents' recent move from South Texas to East Texas and I ended up with a lot of my mom's sewing stuff, including her commercial embroidery machine that lived in my garage for a few months!

Rubbermaid type totes are the way to go when moving. All my quilting and crafting supplies go into totes when we move. I’m the same as you, Becca, sewing is my theory and if I can’t sew my anxiety goes through the roof. I’ve learned to bring an EPP project and a cross stitch project for those transition periods between moving from one country to another. To understand, my husband works for the State Dept and we move every two years and it could be so many places. We are currently in Africa and they don’t have quilting supplies here, I’m so thankful I brought about 80% of my quilt supplies with me. It has been my saving grace.

A funny moving story: I'm sure y'all have heard that the movers will pack everything! My Dad was watching the movers take out his stuff while he munched on some cookies. Suddenly, he couldn't find his package of cookies! The movers had packed it!

    • @SewOffKilter

NO WAY! You are kidding! I have heard of them packing an ash tray with ashes and all still in it.

We use the same moving company for our business and they have always provided top notch service. 😊 I am so happy to see Ian in a new and happy place.
If I were to move again - I would put pool noodles on the poles of my long arm machine to protect them from being bent.

I took over a sewing-alterations business in my small town. The space is 1200 sq ft, but the lady before was a hoarder and had a lot of old dingy stuff. I spent the first months cleaning, sorting, and organizing. After 4 months, she took all of her stuff out. I remember sitting in the empty space overwhelmed. But it was what I wanted and needed. I gradually moved in my own stuff, bought more, and have a 12ft wide design wall! I love this space and squeeze in my own quilting, never sew at home now. But the rent is high for my income and I worry how I will manage if I have to move out. I LOVE my shop and have made it my own.

Oh my goodness…just stumbled on this video and it’s so timely. I’m getting ready to move my sewing room from one room in my house to a larger room down the hall. I know, I know, so what!? You say. It’s a big mess AND I’m prepping for new floors to be installed on the upper two levels. So, this is really overwhelming to me. I don’t want anyone touching my stuff. lol. Glad to know I’m not alone. Looking forward to the next video and your other channels. :)

I would love to see how you do an inventory of all my quilting items and fabric.
I moved into a smaller house and I still have plastic boxes in the garage that I have to keep searching through! I don’t remember what is in them! I forget from one search to the next!!! I keep thinking I should make lists but never get around to it. (Forgot to say I’m in my 70’s and been sewing and quilting for years and years and years!!!) 😮

Figuring out where to put things is the hardest thing for me about moving. My husband is going to finish a portion of our unfinished basement so I can have a larger sewing space (the spare room I am currently in is overflowing). Probably not this winter, but hopefully next winter. Will enjoy seeing & hearing different options & things to think about so I will be more prepared. Design is not my strong suit!!

It is wonderful when we have friends that take the fabrics we no longer need. I live near Rochester. NY and we have a couple of places to donate crafty items. One helps support a hospice
home and the other supports eco friendly and they even take old sewing machines to keep these items out of the landfill. They then provide these items to those that can not afford to purchase full price crafty items as we’ll s free sewing classes,

I would say your first podcast was a success! I know in a previous video on one of your channels you talked about having mic issues or it didn’t sound good. I think you all sounded fine here. I liked how you all mentioned that when sewing you just need the basic stuff, and not all the gadgets. We just love gadgets as sewers but we really don’t need it. This podcast brought a smile to my face and I had a good giggle from it. We need more of this in our lives nowadays. Thanks for bringing that here. Keep up the good work and look forward to more videos on your channels and more podcasts.

Our last move, we packed up the house to put it on the market. It took a year to sell the house, so I had one sewing machine and minimal projects. It was like Christmas when I got to setup my sewing room in my new place. I purged about 6 or 7 large black trash bags that went to a charity yard”age” sale. Mostly garment fabric.
I have been sewing my whole life and have moved my sewing things so many times it just is part of our stuff. No different than the tons of car parts and tools in the garage we have to move. Every home has a garage and sewing room the same as it would have a kitchen. I haven’t sewn in a corner of the bedroom since the early 1980’s.

I had to pack up my sewing space (converted 2 car garage) earlier this year to paint the room. I bought small moving boxes from home depot (40+ of them) to hold my fabric. I did a purge at the same time and donated fabric to a guild for charity quilt making. Several tables from 4 foot to over 6 foot in length plus about 40 plastic project boxes and 6 cubby units which I put on wheels for mobility reasons... All of this and then some to paint room after storm damage. And I moved it all into living room and dining room. About seven years ago when I decided to move my sewing into converted garage, I had emptied the room (it was a second family room because my son and I were taking care of my elderly parents), to lay floor of ceramic tile. We live in Southern Arizona where it's 118 in summer so tile is cooler. Unfortunately tile guy laid tile improperly and I have to pack up the room AGAIN to jackhammer the entire floor and start over.

The first 25 years of marriage we moved 18 times. (Job transfers suck). This last 24 years have been all in one spot. I always packed one room at a time. Last room packed was daughters room and hers was the first room unpacked. We chose the job and knew there would be moves but wanted to make “home” right away for her.
But my sewing room was a close second to be unpacked. After a month or so of boxes I NEEDED to create.

My depression was so bad that I couldn't destash before (we had a huge container anyway). 10 years later, my sewing space is shared with business stuff that I'm slowly culling. This was so much fun! I have moved my sewing room way too many times! I now am in an apartment and have designated the living room as my sewing room. I have a great set up for my sewing area but certainly can't entertain non-sewists in this space! But that's OK. I have reached the point in my life where I need to consider getting "rid" of some of my stash. I don't want to just give it away, yet I can't imagine doing something like a "sale"! It's a real conundrum. And something I would love to hear suggestions from other people on.

Well done, guys! Enjoyed this while sewing this morning. Question: considering your different styles, what's on each of your dream "to-do list" one day? And, what new skill(s) interest you and/or what dream quilt pattern would you tackle now that you're an experienced maker? What other hobbies do you have that take you away from sewing? When you're sewing alone, not making YT content - what does your room sound like? TV, Music, YT - etc. Most times I have something playing, but sometimes... not usually, but sometimes with serious concentration, I have to have a quiet room. Cheers to your success on this new channel!

I learned to do EPP when we were displaced from my sewing stuff. I wish quilting was more portable. Enjoyed the podcast! Did not disappoint!

We moved 5 1/2 years ago. As a quilter who has been collecting fabrics, sewing machines and all the accessories for 40+ years, moving was exhausting. Also, we went from a quad level home with a huge sewing room to a one-story small home. I hope we never move again. That said, if you should ever move to Indianapolis Ian, you can ship boxes to us for safekeeping.

I am in love with this program. The one thing of advice to another moving (moved a long arm business one but twice in a year in a half and then move my personal sewing room) donate but keep the best - rulers, books and material and my collection of sewing machines. just saying.
