    Laugh at us but we just dropped $5k on a mini highland bull and another $5500 on a mini highland heifer. Yes. Expensive. But the waiting list was 3-4years backed up and these guys came across our radar when another buyer backed out. We didn't haggle at all. 🤷‍♂️ these guys are worth what people pay for them I guess.

    Scottish cattle are so cute! I hope to have them as pets someday 🥰

  • @cunningpark

    You guy's may or may not know this, but here in Scotland such an animal would rarely be referred to as a Highland 'cow'. The Old Scots language name is 'Coo', which is still widely used throughout the country, particularly in the Highlands and particularly among Highland folk.. I would suggest that as these animals were originally from the Highlands of Scotland, that the traditional name merits a degree of respect.

      I am aware with them being called coos. And that a group is a fold and not a herd. It's hard to break old habits

    cows are worth whatever a person is willing to pay for one or a hundred and one, me i think i`ll start out with the un-regiestered ones to get started on then improve my herd from there

    I had been watching a few sheep auctions over lockdown period and pure breds from select breeders would be about double if not more than a newer breeder of the same type of sheep. So that is also a thing you should look at in an auction the history of the sellers

    • @100AcreWoodHighlands
      @100AcreWoodHighlands  3 роки тому +2

      Thats an excellent point. There are definitely a few bloodlines that are from well known ranches that sell for more. I didn't think about that

    A very informative video! I don't own cattle, nor do I think it'll happen any time in the near future, but I do find it very interesting to learn about the ins and outs of cattle husbandry. I took courses about it in college and it's remained an interest of mine 👍 One question I've always had about long-horned breeds like Scottish Highlands is--how do you get them in a chute or a crush, with those big horns of theirs? Or do you have some other way of catching/containing them when needed, for vet visits, vaccinations, etc.?

    • @100AcreWoodHighlands
      @100AcreWoodHighlands  3 роки тому +4

      I so far haven't had trouble getting mine in a chute at the vet, although it does take some work to get the horns through. I do believe there are some specialized chutes for cows with horns though

    The other big reason has been the artifical intrest rates we are paying to keep us out of inflation we are just paying the inflation price. Thank you Fed.

    I am kind of bumbed out. I have a field and would love to have a couple of Highlands for nothing more than mowing that field and as pets I can comb and play with. But at these prices. Guess not. How much are castrated males ?

    • @100AcreWoodHighlands
      @100AcreWoodHighlands  3 місяці тому

      Hey Nancy, not all highlands are as expensive as some of these. You could probably find steers for $1,000 at weaning age. Sometimes less

    Hi. Love the videos. I have a great fondness for the highlander . When purchasing land , say about 50 acres what would be things to look for if wanting to raise highlander . Like flatness of land, water .. Thank you . A friend from Canada.

    • @100AcreWoodHighlands
      @100AcreWoodHighlands  2 роки тому

      Hey Tom, thanks for watching! I wouldn’t worry about the land being perfectly flat. I would look for good grass to support them or be able to bale for winter. Good fences already in place would save you a lot of money. Fresh water access is important and for me we deal with heat so I would want lots of shade trees.
