I'm shocked by how few people are talking about the importance of choosing shampoo with the correct pH level. If you want long natural hair or or on a natural hair journey, this is critical. Also, my for people with curly hair (or are perhaps curious about the Deva Curl drama), this is especially important for you! Hope this is helpful! I know it has completely changed the way I will be looking at all my hair products from now on.

For all my low budget people out there. I have gone through that entire list on the website she put below the video and these are the shampoos with a good pH level that are not too expensive and don't have any harmful chemicals :
    - aphogee keratin and green tea shampoo (pH 5.0 - 5.5)
    - design essentials gentle balance sulfate free nourishing shampoo (pH 4,0 - 5,5)
    - era organics shampoo and conditioner hair and scalp therapy (pH < 5,5)
    - Karen moisture natural shampoo (pH 5,4)
    - motions neutralizing shampoo (pH 4,4 - 5,5)
Oh, btw this took me a couple hours, so please appreciate me XD
Update: I bought the design essentials gentle balance sulfate free nourishing shampoo and my hair feels a bit better already after one use 😱

The thing about deva curl is: some of us were using it for 10+ years, and some people just started, but all of us had our hair falling out starting in 2018 and 2019..... So something about the product definitely changed. Maybe it was the pH, like you stated. But it was definitely a change.

Super informative, thank you. I just wanted to emphasize something that you mentioned, just for the sake of repetition.
The pH scale is LOGARITHMIC, so 6.5 is TEN TIMES more alkaline than 5.5.
7.5 is ONE HUNDRED TIMES more alkaline.

Hi there, I'm a hairstylist and curly girl who suffered severe damage from devacurl. Long story short, used devacurl for 7 years with no issues and amazing results. Last summer 2019 the labels on the packaging had changed. Bought new dc shampoo/conditioner and in September 2019 repurchased my usual dc stylers. 1 month later, without any warning my hair started falling out in massive clumps! It was so dry and brittle. I have never experienced anything like that before. I know a lot of people who were using devacurl styling products and having hairloss weren't even using the shampoos so maybe you're on to something with the ph of the products. Usually shampoo will have a higher ph than hair to properly cleanse it and conditioner has a lower ph to bring it back to normal. If all the devacurl products are sitting at a high ph it would make total sense that people's hair was dry and falling out because the cuticle would never close. I saved all my old devacurl products so i think i will test them myself

Actually, as this video or her most recent one expkained, using a high ph shampoo & low ph conditioner does not "cancel out". It just sends ur hair in a roller coaster which is veryy damaging!!

    • @purplephoenix4969
      @purplephoenix4969 2 роки тому

@@awesomeshapiro1793 I guess it depends on the size of ph change. It looks like it's common for shampoo to be around 5.5 but the matching conditioner is around 3.5 - 5. I don't know if that's still a problem, but likely not as much as using something over 7 then putting something that's around 3 on it. For example bicarbonate of soda is over 8 and undiluted apple cider vinegar is between 2 and 3. Some people do bicarbonate of soda "washes" instead of shampoo and apple cider vinegar (sometimes diluted, sometimes not) instead of conditioner. That's a huge swing in ph.

I have extremely sensitive skin and I cant find a shampoo that doesn't leave my hair dry and more prone to breakage (not falling out though thankfully). I thought my hair changed due to being in my 30's, since my curls became less curly. It seems it's probably because of the health of my hair.
Would you have any recommendations for products for sensitive skin that have the correct pH?
I feel like these companies are OK at making skincare, but have no idea about what your hair needs, so it may not irritate, but it's not going to be good for your hair either..

  • @kateisenough
    @kateisenough 3 роки тому +188

This is so frustrating because adjusting the pH level on a product is as simple as adding a very tiny amount of an acid or a base to a formula. Seems like a cheap fix. Also, I'm old as hell and remember that pH balance used to be a big deal in hair and skin product marketing. Like, in the 80s. 😬 Why isn't it now, when the average customer is waaaaay more educated about this stuff than we were back then?

This is a really informative and well-researched video and your sunny personality is the cherry on the cake! I agree that the DevaCurl results do seem to align with the symptoms you've found as resulting from using products that are too basic. That said, water has a pH of 7 and there are people who use water alone to wash their hair. If this really were the cause, wouldn't there be a similar trend amongst folks who wet their hair often without applying products to it? That said, there'd need to be a record of how their hair was responding to such treatment... Thinking aloud.

This totally reminds me of a lesson my 7th grade class and I had from a guest teacher in the early 80's (yes, I'm that old...lol). I was kind of bored during the lesson and didn't pay a lot of attention, but I did remember that the PH of hair products mattered, and that you needed to keep the PH balanced. She said if we used a shampoo that had a pH of 5, we should use a conditioner of 5. The funny thing is that there were actually pH listings on some shampoos at that time, but the seemed to disappear within a couple of years after that lesson. 😪 I remember the bottle I was using at my dad's house was listed as.a 7, I think. Yikes! And it was supposedly an expensive, top of the line product. Anyway, great video! Great information! I'm glad you showed where to get pH strips. 🙂

I’m so happy your video randomly popped up in my recommended videos! I have really bad dandruff and super coarse, frizzy hair. Bloody hell pretty much name all the shit types of hair and I’ve got it. I looked on the database and thankfully some of the low ph shampoos and conditioners are available in Australia, so I’m off to chemist warehouse to buy something that’s not going to continue damaging the shit out of my hair. Thank you so much. I can’t explain how thankful I feel. Xoxo

You are absolutely right, what they experienced with their hair is what happens to my hair when I bleach it. I never paid attention to Ph level of hair products before but now I will, the only shampoo in the supermarket that says loudly on its label that it has low ph is one from the brand Sebamed for damaged hair. so I might get that, now I’ll go to the website and see if I can find the ph level of the one Im using. Thank you

Omg this was SO informative!!! I was using devacurl only for a couple months before the scandal went really public, and immediately threw mine out. That pH link was so helpful, I’m looking forward to trying the right shampoo for my hair - thanks to you!!!

Very cool vid! But Manes by Mell also thought the alkalinity of deva curl products might be the issue. But when she tested her own deva curl products the pH was around 5.5, which shouldn't have caused so much damage to so many people.

    Yess pH is so important!!
I'm curious what pH Monat is. They also have been through lawsuits for woman literally loosing clumps of hair. It's so sad & disgusting what companies will do. Companies like Monat & DevaCurl act like experts but obviously don't know enough to know simple things like pH balance.

wow I just took a look into the database and was bummed that the fanola shampoo that I bought had not been listed. I took a look at the packaging to google the exact product name and noticed that the ph was literally listed on the front of the bottle 😱
super cool, it has a ph of 5.3-5.7 even though it contains sulfates (my hair is almost straight and doesn't mind them)
I wish more companies would do this, a lot of reputable brands already do the same with facial cleansers

pH test strips are notoriously inaccurate. Those of us who make soap use a digital read-out pH testing wand for a much more consistent and accurate measurement. Before you ditch your fave shampoo based on a pH strip, get a second opinion from a digital pH reader.

Pattern Beauty hydrating shampoo is a great one for ph as well. I got a travel size and tested it - it came out around a 5. It's not at a drugstore price, but I really like it - and it's got tea tree oil in it which has been very helpful for me in the past!

K18's new shampoos both have lower phs. The detox shampoo is 3.8 - 4.2 and their maintenance shampoo is 4.5 - 5.5. The shampoos will be available on their site August 2022. I have already used both (purchased from a salon) and as a coily girl sure enough the detox shampoo is my favorite of the 2 but the maintenance one isn't bad either.

I used to use head and shoulders 2 in 1 shampoo but noticed that it helped with dandruff but it would mess up my hair texture so I started using Dove Dermacare Scalp Dryness & Itch Relief Anti-dandruff Shampoo and didn't understand why it worked so much better but this makes a lot of sense. I recently started also using an ACV shampoo maybe once or twice a week as well as it's a 10 keratin spray and my hair been doing pretty well but I will definitely be switching my conditioner back to tresemme from aussie.

I just look at all the bottle of shampoos we have at home (we're 6 so we have quick a few)
And the only one who have the pH written on it is the one my father and I use because we have psiorasis (and curly hair) and it's 4,5-5,5 so that's good
Thank you for your videos, they really help me (I only find them today but I learn more with 4 of yours then 10 of others)

The way my brain opened from watching this. I knew bleaching hair opens the cuticles of the strands but never made the connection to pH and how using more acidic product could then CLOSE the cuticles... also, as a curly haired girl seeing that VERY FAMILIAR list of scalp/hair problems from bad pH 😬😬 I'll be looking for a new shampoo after this...and getting some test strips!

I’ve been trying to grow my hair since I got two inches cut of because it was damaged. I use natural shampoo and conditioner and I wear it in braids for bed and for everyday. ( but not to tight of braids.) And all of this worked!! Surprisingly my hair grew about two inches in a month!!! ( My hair does grow very fast ) My mom measured my hair on March 30th and it was nineteen and a half inches and we measured it on April 28th (so almost a month, by a couple of days) and it was twenty one and a half inches!! That sounds crazy but it’s because of you!! I started watching you in hopes to find tips to grow my hair. So thank you Sarah because if you didn’t make your hair videos I don’t think my hair was going to grow this long. ( well you and genetics) so thanks for your tips!! Also I love your videos!!❤️

I've brought up the pH balance point to a stylist here on UA-cam - @TheCurlNinja. She suffers from deva curl damage and is currently searching for an answer(s) for the problem. Anyways, She responded with "We aren't dealing with a raised cuticle that can be lowered back down with acidic ingredients. The hair is a different fabric and it is severely broken down to where it doesn't act like hair anymore. I am not sure the cuticle is even a factor at this point."

I cut hair professionally for almost 10 years and its sad to say that most "professional" products have such bad ingredients and ph levels are too high, yet professionals still have to sell them not knowing exactly what they're selling. Thank you for opening our eyes. My hair has changed so much since changing shampoos and conditioners, I have previously bleached ends and I'm trying my best to not chop it off cause it's the only scraggly thing left on my hair.

Curly haired ladies can have low porosity (closed cuticle) medium porosity or high porosity (more open). Not all curly haired ladies have open cuticles. So much goes into curly hair, ph doesn’t even scratch the surface. But it is still important.

I watched a video by BiancaReneeToday talking about DevaCurl and she actually took a deep dive into the ingredients. She had older bottles from years ago and when she compared them to newer bottles, she noticed the ingredients had changed. So she looked up the new ingredients (and I think she also consulted a chemist) and long story short, found out that when that specific combination of new ingredients are mixed together, they create a chemical reaction that results in the production of a relaxer. When the temperature is raised above room temperature (that's 68-72F or 20-22C) even by a few degrees, the reaction is sped up and basically you end up with bottles of relaxer and filler. She then went on to compare the ingredients to popular relaxers and so many of them shared the same combo of ingredients.
Makes me wonder if that's how relaxers work. If the relaxer itself is such a high PH that it straightens your hair. It would explain the burning sensation a lot of people get when they use them.
