i’ve started to hate the word “frizz” it has an unnecessarily negative connotation and it seems that everyone is convinced there’s something wrong with their hair because they have “frizz.” a lot of the time what people are defining as “frizz” is either new growth- shorter hairs around their crown that inevitably will stick up and out of place, or what i like to call “fluff,” which is basically what you described as hair being fuller and coming out of styles in the humidity. also fine hair often just looks “fluffier” because it’s more light weight and i find that with curls and waves it doesn’t hang down in super defined curls as easily as coarse hair does. that doesn’t mean your hair is unhealthy! embrace the fluff and embrace your crown of new baby hairs sticking up out of your style lol.

While we're on the subject of unnecessarily negative connotations, "healthy" and "unhealthy" hair. People, women in particular, place so much value on having "healthy" (pretty. Healthy means "pretty" to most people, and "pretty" has a lot of connotations of its own) hair. But like Sarah said in the video, it's all dead by the time it comes out of our scalp. It's totally fine to have your own hair goals to meet your own aesthetic, but it's ultimately not that important. Yet we'll call women with heavily bleached hair "trashy", women with natural curly hair "unkempt", women split ends "lazy". Then disguise the bullying by saying, "well it just doesn't look *healthy*". Like. Y'all know the *healthiest* your hair will ever be is right after shaving it all off, right?

You basically just summed up a 1/3rd of the Milady’s Standard text book (what us Hairdressers study in most hair schools). This would be a GREAT video for people just studying or entering hair school!! Unfortunately most hairdressers focus on the actual process and let all the academic information go in one ear and out the other, but it REALLY makes a difference as a Hairdresser to have a comprehensive knowledge of what you’re doing!

I would love to hear more about how historical styling and hair care affects the hair. Back in the early 1900s frizz was in and Gibson girls wore it as fluffy as possible. It seems for most of history sleek and shiny hair wasn’t a priority and women in the 18th century used pomade and powder to make the hair fluffy and full of grip. They also grew their hair very long which tells me their hair health was pretty high, so it seems to me that sleek and shiny hair as a sign of good hair health is a new thing.

I know you're joking but I would assume you mean that at least somewhat seriously. She explains both of the terms in the video because most people don't get it. I don't think it would matter at all what your first language is as long as you take the definitions she gives for these words. If anything it might be easier if English was not your first language as you might not have the strong association between thin and fine that we have.

I literally have to pull a hair out of my head and hold it up to their hair for them to get it. Fine does not necessarily equal thin! Hey Sarah! Really nice content! I have watched several videos of yours and really enjoyed them! My hair is naturally curly and dry but I get a keratin straightening fairly often (3 times a year). I know it is super damaging, but there is a limit to how natural you can leave your hair especially if a) it hurts your self esteem and b) your schedule is fairly hectic and therefore cannot afford to spend a ridiculous amount of time making your hair presentable.
With the proliferation of those products, I think many people are in the same situation as I, whereby we are not keen to discontinue using keratin straightening treatments BUT we still want to make sure it is somewhat sustainable by giving our hair all chances to survive through this cruelty (ie navigate this trade-off as best as we can). Some tips on this topic would be IMMENSELY insightful as I personally found NOTHING out there touching on this topic.
    Love and good health,
    Sara

My mom had thick and curly hair . But my older brother seems blind to it for some reason. We both have somewhat thick & wavy hair because of her (our paternal grandmother is Finnish, so that kind of counteracted our mom's texture just a bit).
But anyway, my older brother is balding and I'm not. An unnatural cowlick is seriously interrupting the health of my brother's scalp. So his hair kind of falls limp and straight-ish whereas mine is just wavy. Which means every time I appear in front of him with fresh hair, he complains about it being so big and frizzy, and can't I just comb it out so it's not so embarasing looking???
This coming from the person that never wears his down for any reason and insists that our mother had pin-straight hair. Unreal. WE HAVE WAVY HAIR ANDREW! JUST ACCEPT IT ALREADY!

If I blow dry my hair with a round big brush, my hair looks soft and shinny. But, my natural state is wavy and if I don't use a leave in conditioner or styling cream it goes crazy! sometimes straight hair gets labelled as unhealthy by being called "limp" meaning not frizzy enough.

Hello Sarah, thank you so much for your effort - the amount of research you put into videos, it truly shows. I was wondering - do you plan on making a comprehensive video on hairloss? On telogen effluvium, specifically? Thank you so much! Sub from the Czech Republic.

I have fine but very thick hair that is wavy/curly and super frizzy. I spent a lot of time and effort as a teenager straightening it, now I sort of use my own tweaked version of the curly girl method and its definitely way healthier but still pretty frizzy lol.
The flip side of that though is it takes like 2 to 3 weeks for the top of my hair to look noticeably greasy without washing, it absorbs oil like crazy. I don't even wanna know how long it would take for the ends to look greasy tbh.

I think I might have thin and fine hair, but it has always been really healthy. Very straight and shiny, but it makes it look very flat so I usually have to make it a bit more rough so that there will be some volume. Things like salt spray (found one that has heat and UV protection) and hairspray are big help. Also I make it have some big curls, more in the way of a blow dried look, because I think that makes it more voluptuous, but still looks mostly straight.

I would compare the cuticle to scales on a fish because they can react to the environment more similar to the cuticle but the layering is in fact very much like shingles on a roof!

I have moderately fine, but it's so thick and the is SO much of it. Like, a person with thin hair, the circumference if pulled back will be about 2 inches. For thick hair, the circumference will be about 4 inches. The circumference of my hair is a little more than four inches, like there is a lot of it.

Later I realized that was exactly why my hair was healthy.

Can I recommend Olaplex #3. It's a bond builder. I believe shampoo is important because it helps the scalp to be in It's best state. I would say use baby shampoo. It's very gentle. :)

My hair is thick and I have a lot of it! I always lose way more than 100 hairs per day, but I never have had thinning hair, I think it depends of how much hair you have, the 100 hairs per day is just an estimate

Wavy and straight, small strands but very dense..I have a lot of hair..my stylist said if my head was a corn field it's would be so dark you couldn't see crap! Lol neon lights to be found if lost! Lol I've never had anyone get it so right before...my hair routine is very natural, I have virgin hair so no chemicals, heat, products nothing..I wash every other day with a shampoo from exederm because I have eczema even on my scalp so their products give me zero issues ..i only use a wide tooth comb when wet and let air dry naturally..I'm currently growing it out hoping to have longer hair again 😀 anyways I love how informative your videos are, I never knew there was so much about hair..just proves are Body are truly a masterpiece. Hugs..

I always used to see those videos of East Asian women and girls who said they showered in cold water to keep their hair beautiful. And I resigned myself to my own hair things because I like hot showers, and I don't wash my hair everyday. And as it turns out, we have different hair types. So cold showers were never going to be goals. 😂
