4 Op-Amp Big Muff Pedals (EHX, Wren and Cuff, Greer, Keeley)

- Опубліковано 5 чер 2018
- A thorough comparison of four 'remakes' of the Electro-Harmonix Version 4 'Op-Amp' Big Muff, which EHX released in the late 1970s with the previous versions' transistors replaced with op-amps or 'integrated circuits'. Not a popular pedal at the time, it re-emerged in the 1990s off the back of its extensive use by the Smashing Pumpkins on 'Siamese Dream' and other recordings.
Various boutique pedal manufacturers have released clones in an effort to sell to people who can't afford to pay the high prices for the original, and in 2018 Electro-Harmonix released their own reissue in 'nano' pedal size.

These are the most original, stylish and informative pedal reviews on UA-cam.
Fred Raccoon That’s extremely kind of you! Much appreciated
I got the EHX used for $60. I'm glad I'm not missing anything by not going the boutique route.
FINALLY someone doing useful and well thought out (and executed) demoes. Thank you so much!
Nick Hopkins you're very welcome!
Perfect pedal comparison. You are seriously great at this.
Thanks! I learnt a new thing on my latest Boss DS-1 comparison video, which is: put the pedals lower down in the frame, which leaves room for the text above them instead of below where my hands are in the way all the time... Can't believe I didn't think of that before...
Best channel for pedal comparison .. Great job!
this kind of review that i loved
just need my ears to decide which one should i bough next
Thanks for the review, the price of EHX is unbeatable. Sold!
Great comparison man! They all sound pretty similar, but I think I’d go for the reissue or the Wren and Cuff pedal, they sounded the best to my ears.
I own the EHX pedal reissue and I think it’s my favorite fuzz ever. I get that pumpkins tone out the gate and it is so immensely satisfying
Another great shootout! I really like the playing in your loops -- 6 minutes of a loop could get tedious, but your playing is always so catchy and fun that it's just a joy to hear it repeated and filtered through different sounds.
I too think the EHX one wins this. It sounds better than the Keeley one, it's got a smaller footprint than the other two, it looks the best, and it's the cheapest one.
You might want to try the Blakemore Effects Deus Ex Machina fuzz if you haven't yet. It's an Op-Amp muff clone with an optional clean blend and a dedicated mids knob. I don't own an EHX Op-Amp Muff so I can't directly compare them, but the Deus Ex sounds good and close to that sound to my ears.
Holy damn. This is how you compare muffs. BEST IVE SEEN. I don't feel the need to drop the coin on a W&C. Thank you.
Great video!
Cheers.
Big Muff all the way. Get some pumpkin pi.
Came for the pedal comparison, left thinking it’s been too long since I watched Look Around You.
Cool video - I really like the format! I've been wanting to get the EXH, but just haven't yet.
stereolaunch Thanks!
Do it. It's magical. You won't regret it.
Reissue. Glad I own it...
Ehx sounds more agressive than the other, the eye see is very similar but if i want a muff i chose the brand that created muff, so ehx
Stomp Under Foot has a pretty nice one too
Great demo! What would you say you liked the most?
I think i liked the Tarpit. Seems thicker at some points. Nevertheless the price difference is quite large.
I would go for the EH version since its like $80! the keeley, as always, sounds great, but it is $130...for m not worth the difference
Came here specifically to hear the Keeley vs. the Muff and I think you nailed it - $50 more for something that sounds about the same but with less bass response doesn't seem like a good deal.
Great demo! Exactly what you need, with talking!
Thanks!
My fave is the Eye See, least fave is the Apple. The original is a short 2nd though.
yo wtf jam rocks, i've been watching this vid to help me with a purchase and never noticed it lol
Can we talk about how amazing of a pedal platform the Boss Katana is? You can't distinguish it from a Marshall.
Mine feels more like a Fender, but I know what you mean.
I built the rotten apple on veroboard. It's awesomeness
Well crap, guess I’ll get the Ehx.
All awesome pedals though.
Video well done sir.
Rooftop Boxer Thanks! Glad I could save you some money :)
If the Wren and Cuff was a bit more than the EHX reissue I would go with that, for build quality and perhaps a bit more true to the original circuit? Wish the original was in the comparison, nonetheless a great video!
Qais Yeah, unfortunately I have to buy these pedals myself so getting an original was a little out of the question. 🙂
@@ThePedalBored You'd be surprised, a new W&C is more expensive than an original BIg Muff V4/5
Qais But you can't return those to Amazon once you're done with them... 😉
Is it me or do Op Amp Muffs sound kinda harsh and thin? It seems kinda hard to get a thick Muff sound out of it, which is what Siamese Dream sounds like.
Then again siamese Dream has bit more than just the Op amp. Given Corgan's set up perhaps playing his 70's strat equipped with Lace pickups, an mxr distortion II pedal, the Op amp, & marshall amp settings. There's a lot more variables than just the OP amp that made that album's tone
There are tons of guitar tracks piled on top of each other for pretty much every track on that album. One big muff might not sound thick, but two dozen playing the same thing sounds quite a bit bigger.
Put an EP Booster in front of the OP Amp RI, and you have that thicker fuzz tone without all of the mud and flub. That's how I run mine in front of my TH30, through its clean channel. It is without a doubt the best sounding fuzz I have ever heard. I also own an EHX Big Muff w/Tone Wicker. The OP Amp RI blows it out of the water.
@@al271987 could use the TC electronic Mimic pedal. It does automatic double tracking, up to 3 extra tracks. I have one, it's pretty cool
This video mostly exemplifies the quality of EHX pedals. Nearly indistinguishable from pedals two or three times it’s price...
good shit. i'm subscribing. you demo and test exactly as I would. except I would like to add, try to get a couple of 'techniques' slipped in there.....a big meaty palm mute "WUB" would help with hearing the resonance and bottom end..... a few single note runs? nothing fancy, just saying. peace out, subscribed and thumbs up , from new zealand
Thanks! I try and include as much variety in the original loop as I can, but since this one is direct side-by-side comparison I'm not so interested in assessing the whole range of the pedal. Might try out some 'techniques' in ones where I compare different types though. I'm planning to put some of EHX's different muffs up against each other for example.
Wow... I’ve been wanting the tarpit for awhile now but the ehx is not even half the price.
👍😉🇺🇸❤OP-AMP BIG MUFF (tone off !!!!! ) ***any EQ's / tone controls on pedals..........SUCK !!!!!!!!!............EHX Soul Food (put tone on zero, it has enough chime on its own)
The reissue is so close to all of the other versions (except the Keeley), that the only two choices in my mind are the reissue or the Keeley.
I own both, though, so....
I’m able to get the rotten apple for 88 bucks. Think it’s worth it at that price?
I can always use more "RAARRRGH!!!"
Good to have a little ,RaRRRGGGHH! as an option.
Have you worked out what we're looking for? Correct. The answer is: fuzz.
Wren and Cuff all the way...
Interesting! I just couldn't really tell the difference.
@@ThePedalBored I can hear a big difference...EHX Chinese poor components on a PCB or handmade? I'll pay the extra bucks for handmade (USA) everyday and twice on Sunday. Buy American, hire American !!!
Well I think the TLO72 works a little better with some gainer stuff and a little darker...even the NE5532 isn't anything special and can do some great things with that one too. It's still shitty opamps man lol
