Five Muff Pedals (Nano Big Muff, Green Russian, Defector, Hoof, Musket)

  • Five Big Muff style fuzz pedals thoroughly compared and then boosted using the independent pre-gain on the Foxpedal Defector, and the TC Electronic Spark Mini.
    Electro-Harmonix Nano Big Muff
    Electro-Harmonix Green Russian Muff Reissue
    Foxpedal Defector Fuzz
    Earthquaker Devices Hoof
    Blackout Effectors Musket
    TC Electronic Spark Mini
    These are all, undoubtedly, EXCELLENT muff pedals, even the much maligned Nano. But (in isolation) the Green Russian Reissue just kicks everyone else's arse. It's got a seriously huge bottom end that sounds incredibly satisfying and EHX have done a brilliant job making a pedal that sounds this good at that price. And nothing else I tried takes a boost before it quite as well.
    However, when I kicked it on during a band rehearsal the other night, I suffered the classic Big Muff problem - my guitar literally disappeared into the sound of the drums and the bass.
    So, if you're Jack White, I'd recommend the Green Russian. If you're in a band, I'd probably go for the Musket. It's double the price if you want to buy it new, but the MIDS control (and possibly the FOCUS if you can get the settings right - though I couldn't) really fixes that. The SHIFT control on the Hoof just didn't quite do it for me, I don't know why. Made the pedal sound to brittle and thin, perhaps, none of the width of the other two. But those are my ears. Yours will be different. The Hoof is a hugely popular pedal and justifiably so.
    There's clearly more to the Foxpedal Defector than I've shown here too. I missed out its FEEDBACK function - just hold the FUZZ switch down and the light turns green and some kind of crazy shit happens apparently. (Also I can never quite get behind diode clipping toggle switches. 'Just pick one!' I say. Too much twiddling.)
    Fender Classic Player Jazzmaster (bridge pickup), looped on a TC Electronic Wiretap
    Boss Katana 50w on the Clean channel, mic'd with a Sennheiser e609
    Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 into GarageBand
    iPhone 7 into Final Cut Pro

    I've heard great sounds coming out of a Musket, but for regular plug-and-play, the obvious choices are the Russian EHX and the Hoof. They sound so much more ready to rock. I don't love Muffs, and I usually end up selling them (although I used a real green Sovtek for years in the early 90s). The only one I regret selling is the Hoof.

    Quick note and it may have already been stated elsewhere in the comments: the focus pot on the musket alters the tone of the pre pot, you didn't notice any difference because you had the pre dialled out. That being said, great demo!
    I have the hoof reaper, green Russian and musket, the musket being the muff that resides on my board due to its versatility.

      Yes, that sounds right to me. I tried the Green Muff Reissue in a band context and it kind of disappeared. Hoof and Musket seem designed to solve that problem.

      The Pedal Bored I agree with you guys. Lucky be the person that can afford to have both the ehx Russian reissue and these fancy pedals! I spent my money on the hoof, would like to have the ehx russian too, but that will have to wait. Comparing the hoof to the Little Big Muff I sold, I can see that it shows up much better in the band mix, but I preferred the ehx when playing home alone..

      @@manualofalternativemusic Same. My Hoof came in the mail last night and I had already sold the LBM. Had really high expectations/hopes. Initial reaction, I should have kept the Muff and it was much cheaper. I don't really need my fuzz to cut, I only play at home. I'd like to try the Green Russian and maybe some day I'll get a LBM again. By then I'd probably miss the clarity. I have to/can dial in the Hoof in a way that I couldn't/didn't need to with the LBM.
      Have you made any fuzz changes since you posted your comment??

    • @manualofalternativemusic
      @manualofalternativemusic 4 роки тому +1

      Brayden329 Hey bro! Yeah, I’ve been playing home too due to quarantine. I’ve bought a Black Russian big muff out of curiosity because it was cheaper than the new green reissue, and I’m digging it. The hoof has way more clarity and punch to it, but the ehx works home for me, it didn’t work well with my band if the Tone wasn’t set to 9 or 15 o’clock. I like having both now, wanna get a Ram’s head soon to compare them. I’ll keep the hoof for live situations though.

    • @mistershabadoo
      @mistershabadoo 3 роки тому

      Totally agreed. Used the original Green Russian and the reissue in my last band. Hoof cut through the mix way better! Soft clicking is much nicer than the hard snap of an EHX footswitch. I love their circuits, but the switches discourage me mildly.

    I have a Green Russian Big Muff Pi I bought new in the mid-Nineties for $90. It is still in excellent shape with the original wood crate. Seeing how much they are listed for online these days, I am tempted to sell it and get the re-issue. It sounds nearly identical to mine and is more practical for a pedalboard. The size is reasonable, the plugs are on the correct sides, it has a DC input, and the knobs are oriented in a way that makes sense. That being said, my Green Russian was the first guitar pedal I ever bought, and even today, it ranks as my favorite, so I will probably stick with the behemoth that needs a CBAT converter for power because its brain-melting sound brings me such joy.

    honestly tho, your muff comparisons have got to be among the best of them all--no introduction, no talking, just sounds presented in an orderly, controlled way, with a precise sound source that doesn't change. although i'd love to hear some single-note/soloing type stuff too (no wanky solos necessary), yours are still great. any chance you've got some ram's head comparisons in the works? (including the byoc clones would be rad too--they have the tonal boost switches.)

Somewhere down the line I'm going to try to compare a bunch of muff clones that have Mids controls - Stomp Under Foot's Civil Unrest, the Mojo Hand Colossus. Basic Audio's Tri-Ram and so on. But it costs money to get them, even if I end up sending them back, so I'm slow...

    @markferguson3745 4 роки тому +1

    The EHX is THE classic, but needs some EQing either at the amp, or another pedal to cut through.Better with single coils in that regaurd.
    The Hoof really is a solid improvement on the Muff circuit, with Ge and Si components, you can get the fat low end and broad harmonics, while maintaining the cut and rasp.It has a much larger range, and it and the Musket are good distortions dialed back.
    If you compare the 2 boutiques with the Muffs side by side, you WILL hear the difference in basic harmonic content;is this still relevant to playing live, in a band mix ? Prob not.
    The thing you learn playing in a band mix is that all those subtleties that are so obvious at home in the bedroom just get lost in the sauce.This is why you see many pros using basic, reliable , equipment, preferably that's easily replaced.On top of this, many otherwise obvious differences will get lost using wireless systems , heavy buffers, or just reverb and delay.
    The boutique stuff can pay off in the studio/ on recordings, and it's not going to hurt as long as it's designed well throughout.

    I'd like to advocate for the Musket for a minute. It's a great pedal. I've got some huge sounds out of it, and the Focus control really DOES work. I suspect the one in the video to be defective in some way, or doesn't like the Katana. With 6 controls it's not exactly plug and play but it's not rocket science either. Too bad it made such a poor impression in this video, the rest was great and of course, Green Muff wins here.

      @@ThePedalBored I mean when you did roll it up it was when the tone control, mid-range, and fuzz were at zero. You do it later with a reasonable control layout, and the world of difference I hear in mine is not in this video for some reason. The focus control on my musket is literally the reason I haven't been able to take it off my board. With my guitars and basses that higher output bass heavy pickups, it stays tight and defined while other fuzzes sputter out and sound gated. Not that it matters much since Blackout has unfortunately gone the way of the Dodo recently.

    Russian sounds amazing in this video. Hoof is awesome as well. I'm trying to decide between the Russian with the JHS Mod or a Hoof. I like the Mid/EQ Control on the Hoof. The JHS mod makes it a hard choice, and then I found out there is a Cloven Hoof that sounds badass too.... What a fun problem to have.

    • @JoeDannyOrtiz
      @JoeDannyOrtiz 6 років тому +2

      Yeah the modded Russian sounds like garbage in some demos and then really interesting in some others. I figured if the synth-esque clipping modes were not good in practice for me I could just run it stock or play with the other parameters.
      After you say that though I think I'll purchase the stock Russian and save a buck. The EQD Hoof seems to be able to get damn close the the Russian tones plus some more options though. Playing with a bass player makes me think the shift/mid control will be super useful. Thanks so much for the video and the response. Super informative.

      Joe Danny Ortiz I bought the Hoof recently. I used to play with a Little Big Muff with my band, maaan there’s some very noticeable difference. The shift knob makes the guitar stand out really well, and it still sounds like a big muff when you change the mids, I loved it. Though I’m also in the mood for the new Russian reissue hahaha

    • @JoeDannyOrtiz
      @JoeDannyOrtiz 6 років тому +1

      Yeah that's what I ended up deciding on too. The shift knob is what pushed it over the edge. I'm using the Hoof Reaper which is a two in one. The other side is a Tone Bender-ish fuzz that's cool for Zeppelin sounding stuff. I would probably have just bought a russian if I was just playing with a drummer and no bass player. I put fuzzes after a klon-ish OD in the chain anyways so I can get the mids back if needed.

    What do you think of the Triangle? For me, it's the superior Muff. It sounds like a growling leopard riding a fatboy and wielding a chainsaw. That's the tone I was looking for from the beginning.

      I think you're right. I've got another more recent video where I compare the current 5 nano-sized Big Muffs from EHX - ua-cam.com/video/Iwy9rVA9cLk/v-deo.html - and I'd say the Triangle wins. But I also love the Russian. And the OpAmp. GAH. DON'T MAKE ME CHOOSE.

    I have built the first four versions from left to right in your vid on my quest for my ideal Muff sound and have to say your Musket doesn’t sound right at all. It’s based on a Black Russian circuit with an LPB-1 in front as the ‘pre-gain’, mine doesn’t sound gated or farty like this one seems to, weird.
    Excellent demo though, Green Russian is a clear winner for me in this vid!

      Kokos They never got back to me. I've sold it since and not had any complaints from the buyer, so maybe it's just something to do with how I had it set in this video.

      @@ThePedalBored thanks for information. I can see their website is down, maybe they are not in the business anymore. I heard that Kylesa loves this pedal and I'm looking for a fuzz, this is why I was interested in comparison. Since this pedal is rare and costy, I think I will just choose a green russian.

    • @bastianmaoro8278
      @bastianmaoro8278 6 років тому

      "Wrong" I say, a problem perhaps, I don't know, the Russian one is very well spoken and Hoof too, but I already heard a clone of Musket and Hoof in front of me, and Musket clone sounded closer to the sound of Gilmour than Russian on some occasions and much more versatile, even in the Gilmourish blog the Musket has a good tag, it's very heavy fuzz distortion but cover pretty much the classic vibe of muff's, in this demo... may be the comparison ... but honestly, I found it a little bit strange or just disapointing.
      Good shot by the way, I like it.

      It definitely sounds like something is going on with that pedal. Sounds nothing like my Musket. Mine never really sounds gated like that and nowhere near as woofy or thuddy. Mine is very clear and often has to be tamed for how bright and gritty it can be (running into a silverface deluxe). I've never found the focus to make much of a difference on mine either, very subtle at best. But your pedal sounds completely different from mine. See some of the other youtube videos on it.

      I owned a Musket and it sounded nothing like this. Probably the best Muff pedal I've played! Should never have sold it! I wonder whether it didn't like the looper before it. Maybe it was a buffer / impedance issue.

  • @50trtr

    The musket and the hoof are superior to the rest, this demo is not a correct representation of the musket. The musket is probably one of the best muff circuits ever made I own several original big muffs and none of them are as good as the hoof or musket.
