At the time of Live Aid I was serving in the British Royal Marine Commandos in a refugee camp in Ethiopia. We listened to it on the radio. We were surrounded by the full horror of the Famine, but when Queen came on the radio those poor soles who were there even reacted in a very positive way. I remember that a lot of us Royal Marine Commandos were crying watching some of the children dancing along, I'm teary eyed just remembering. I looked around at men I had fought alongside, who were tough, hardened Royal Marine Commandos who had fought a life and death war against Argentinian's in 82. By the end of Queen's set we were dancing with the children. It went along way to help build their trust in us. The famine is only one of many terrible memories I have from 34 years of active service, and 2 years hospitalisation. But when I remember the smiles on the children's faces, and their laughter at the terrible way we danced always reminds me that humanity will always find it's way through even the worst of times. I only watched it for the first time last year, my son put it on the TV. A lot of memories came back and a lot of tears.
My amazing Wife took me to see Queen at Wembley, U.K., in 1986 two weeks after I got back from Ethiopia as a surprise. I saw Queen live 6 times in all, they were incredible live. And yes, I am an old fart.

Apart from agreeing with what the Yanks say" thank you for your service " ; you've seen things most of us would hate to see. But also, like you say see the little things that make a difficult job well worth while.
I hope that you came back ok, both physically and mentally.
And seriously; thanks for doing something I could never do.

This was a benefit concert to raise money for the Ethiopian famine. All the biggest name artists of the day performed, Dire Straits, The Who, Led Zeppelin, U2, Phil Collins, Elton John...the list is long and illustrious. Wembley Stadium with 80,000 people and held simultaneously in Philadelphia with an audience of over 100,000, and a worldwide television audience of 1Billion! It was a HUGE event. Each act only got a 20minute time slot, and if they ran over they got their sound turned off so Queen practiced with alarm clocks placed all around so they got it down perfectly. All the tickets had been sold out before it was even announced that Queen would be performing so this wasn’t a crowd of typical Queen fans, but Freddie had them all under his spell. They blew every other act out of the park. It was said that when Queen started their set everyone backstage reacted like a dog whistle had gone off, they all stopped what they were doing and cocked their heads because they realised Queen were stealing the show. David Bowie who was next on stage said “How am I supposed to follow that?” And you thought it was just pretty good? Are you joking? How can I respect your opinion on anything now if you can’t recognise an Epic performance when it hits you in the face? Wow

May be he was having a bad day. Like I've said I didn't like the version he used in terms of the quality and sound of the instruments. There's better versions around. I've heard better through the same speakers as I used to listen to this one.

@@aimlessmatt9432 Maybe not, but the back story doesn’t take away from the fact that Bob Geldoff was starting to panic because the donations weren’t going as well as he had hoped, it wasn’t until Queen took the stage that the money started rolling in. They hit $1M during their set, so they must have been doing something right. The way Freddie had that crowd in the palm of his hand was incredible, and as I said, they weren’t a crowd of Queen fans but they would have done anything he asked of them.

This is all about context. The band weren’t on the schedule to perform until the last minute so the audience didn’t know they were performing nor were a ‘Queen’ crowd. Freddie almost didn’t sing due to a throat infection but soldiered on. The band had had a couple of quiet years beforehand but Freddie bagged prime time to ensure those in Philadelphia could watch ‘live’ too. Why this is so epic is that this performance re launched the band to a new fan base worldwide & gave the group superstar status. As I said, it’s all about the context

The other performers, which included several heavy hitters stopped what they were doing back stage to watch Queen that day. During Radio Gaga, not only did everyone in Wembly clap in unison, everyone in Philadelphia did as well as they watched on the Jumbotron. What’s most impressive is that an incredible electricity was created given this was not a Queen show and they weren’t even on the bill. Almost 2 billion people watched this iconic performance and it’s regarded by many as the greatest in rock history.

Every song was theirs - written by one of them.. They selected the set; rehearsed...structured these hits of theirs to "entertain" for 18-20 min I'm remembering. Had no wasted time . . . Deaky and his bass bounced thru each number, Brian and that special guitar of his riffed each song, Roger put hie entire drum set thru the paces constantly while accenting Freddie's singing and Freddie, well he gave his all and more I always think. All added fantastic vocal back up to Freddie. Other acts that day were good also. It was a fabulous day, but Queen uniquely crafted a 'full concert' - a perfect presentation. It joyfully entertained and included fan participation like no other. Sorry you don't recognise the magnificence. Sporadically look at Live Aid's full 16 hour world wide concert . I think Queen was judged the most spectacular of some 22 acts. (P.S. Comparing this to their concerts is like comparing a Pumpkin to an orange.)

Context: This was supersonic then and remains so now - sheer tenacity, stripped bare for the group known to be so over the top theatrically. Fact: Lots of stellar acts but they stole the show - artists & crowd agreed. Think scale: they were schooled in stadiums & made it a jukebox of their sound. And in one year live performances would be over with Freddie's illness, undercover. Yet still Queen would record and produce videos. Think on that. That is achievement.

You need to watch the back story documentary about this. A lot of the other bands/performers and promoters didn't want Queen there because they had recently performed in South Africa. In addition some of the promoters and others connected with "Live Aid" felt that Queen's best performance days were behind them. They also felt that their music was out of date and that the group would not resonate with the crowd. That was why They were slated to perform so late. The crowd was hot and tired. There was also personal issues going on with the band itself AND Freddie was sick with a cold.
They came on and stole the show... But there is more to it. Watch the documentary. Then watch this again paying close attention to the choice of songs. Pay attention to where Freddie Mercury is looking during some of the lyrics. This performance was a direct rebuke to his detractors.

As many others have said before me Queen had only a 20 min slot, as did all the other acts and absolutely smashed it! However if you're not yet convinced of their Brilliance you can watch and react to their whole concerts at Rock in Rio, or Tokyo (where the main language of the audience isn't English) or their concert at Wembley in 1986, one of their final concerts due to Freddies condition, and then go on to react to anything from their Innuendo album and Made in heaven album, to see how fantastically they and especially Freddie carried on when he was in last stages of life. Then I'm sure you will change you're mind and understand why Queen fans are so passionate in their opinions!

It was legendary. People who know better then you and me said so. The other bands and singers on the day in the UK and across the World. Said Queen were the best that day.
Tbh you didn't have a great version there in terms of the bass/drums, and bass weight, it wasn't right. The instruments didn't sound right.
Freddie was actually ill that day. Throat issues. His Doctor didn't want him to go on.
And he was still the best performer on the day. lol
But yes, other "proper" concerts to look out for Montreal 81. Milton keynes, at the Bowl 82.

Considering Freddie not feeling well that day and Bob Geldof attributing raising a million after their performance is epic from a human standpoint as well! But that's not important to this UA-camr....this is my last video I'm gonna watch made by this person.

When you play with the Who, Zep, Eurythmics, Dire Staits, Stevie Wonder, U2, Paul Young, etc 🤯 and the only thing people decades later still talk about is your set, then that makes it legendary. 🤔 I honestly couldn't tell you from memory what any of those bands [played except Eurythmics. Annie Lennox's performance of 'Talking To An Angel' is still a classic! 🤗 Those opening notes still send a chill down my body. 😂 And I'm 60 yo! However as someone who watched Freddie mesmerize a few Stadiums (Madison Sq Garden, The Meadowlands, Giant Stadium) of people in my life AND considering the Drs. told him not to sing due to a bad infection, I think he did pretty good! It wasn't until Radio Gaga that every hair on the back of my neck stood up that I realized "The World was watching something special and I'd hate to have to come on behind them, after that performance." I've only seen that happen 1 other time when AC/DC had to come on after Rush at the S.A.R.s Benefit Concert! Rush blew The Rolling Stones away, who played before them. 🥰🐰

Really sad you don’t get the tremendous amount of work that went into that. I won’t go on and on like many people have because they said it well I will just say Freddie had a horrible throat infection during that time and was told not to go on but their he was with No break in 100 degree heat singing his heart out. They took a 20 minute set and sang 6 great hits with style and grace while having to cut half of the songs short. Do a little more research on the concert and come back to revisit it one more time.
