@@cousinhubert I love adding civilian traffic. If you've watched Wolf's Cuban Missile Crisis video and the first Sino-Soviet War video, I added a lot of neutral shipping in those missions. Future missions will have civilian ships and aircraft for sure!
Just a quick but very noteworthy reminder to anyone and everyone here watching this video (+ all other Wolfpack videos) and/or reading this comment: This man does NOT have sponsored ad reads in his videos. There is not many channels nowadays that can claim that either, certainly not many at all that put out near-daily content at such a high level like Wolf.
Due to the fact the Russian subs had to surface in order to fire their missiles the Harpoon was originally designed as an anti-submarine missile, which makes the name make more sense. When first tested it tended to just fly through the sail and not detonate, so they added the pop-up feature to overcome that. After the Russians developed the technology to fire while submerged the Harpoon became the anti-ship missile we know today.
EMCON isn't like silent running; missiles are so much faster and it's way easier to find you on the open ocean than in the depths tracking the sound of your propeller. Your radars are your eyes; once you are detected at all, turning them off is like fighting blind.
Great stuff. Your channel is such a perfect complement to this game because of your talent with narrative, which adds so much depth. With the editor in Sea Power, the sky is the limit as you can recreate almost any scenario in history.
One thing I really hope to see in this game is more "personalised" damage models, where you can clearly see how your hit harmed the ship rather than it seemingly being a pretty "oh the ship has been hiiiit" animation that it has now. That adds so much

A Quick note about the Echo II boats. I do not believe that they are capable of launching all 8 missiles at once, and even if they are, it was certainly not doctrine to do so. The doctrine was to fire a salvo of four, and follow up 12 minutes later with the remaining four.
Shaddocks are relatively capable of attacking ground targets. I think separating your ships to allow engagement with those Shaddocks on the Silkworms was the call. Keeping radars active would have helped as well.
Great video. FinnishJaeger also did a great job making these missons. In 2022 i have visited Peenemünde and in the port they have Juliet class sub as a museum ship. It is a similar boat as Echo, but it is diesel electric.
Once even ONE missile is in the air, EMCON is out the window unless you're being targeting by SEAD. your ships aren't submarines, they don't just disappear if they are quiet enough. Once you hear vampire, all eyes open, all ears on.

34:22 I don´t think the ss-n-3s radar is good enough to actualy pick up ground targets (non vessels). Thats at least what the publicly available data indicates. Love your videos and storytelling tho! ps: there seems to be a difference between surface launched and submarine launched versions of the shaddock tho.
if you mark unknown targets as hostile, I find the firing solution builds quicker than unknown ones. also control left click allows you to "queue" targeting orders.
Great scenario. I agree about the animations however the only "realism" issue would be the Echos crew in the sail while they launch. The toxic fumes from the missiles would kill the crew so they would be buttoned up observing through the periscopes.
Those patrol boats must've been giving the Chinese an accurate track of your position for the entire engagement. The Silkworm sites never even needed to light off their FC sets, they could just launch on preprogrammed coordinates and let the seeker radar do the rest. Clever, clever...

IIRC, Echo II cannot guide all missiles simultaneously; you need to fire and wait for the missile to receive its mid-flight guidance/or find its own target before firing another one, but that's the old Echo II; newer Echo II (presumably in this video) should have updated fire control.
I really loved the animations in the missile launching, how the canisters opened them and launched the missiles out. And I do believe the islands defenses can be neutralized easily if the two Russian ships just launched those long range Cruise missiles at the safe distance, though I believe you are also reserving it for naval targets but unfortunately the only things present on those Islands are patrol boats, and it's waste of missiles to be used against them.
(26:00) With hindsight, I'm starting to think that approaching the island chain from the southeast or northwest would be better, so you only have to engage one missile station at a time. (35:50) Are the small boats like the minesweeper trying to act as forward observers for the artillery?
