Yeah here on the west coast we do do stuff like that but for jacksmelt, you can see the big schools of them just below the water!

Nick, I don't have any issues catching Opelu when I find them, but lately I haven't been able to find opelu after hours of pedaling. I usually fish Mahala bay (near the airport) or pokia bay. *Kayak*
