Quick morning run to just outside Hilo Bay to test out the new Garmin Striker 4 fish finder and grab some Opelu (Mackerel Scad) to use as dead bait on the next offshore trip.
@@AffordableWahoo What size hooks do you prefer for opelu and what color lures. I fish a lot at the place where your last video was taken. I usually fish solo cause there aren't too many kayak fishermen in ka'u. Probably because everyone else has boats. Lol
@@tobykekoa6922 size 8 gold J hooks are solid. Gold, silver, and aqua all work really well. Those grounds get fish! I see why guys go on boat though the weather can flip fast.
@@AffordableWahoo I'll give the 8's a try, I've been using size 6's with chl minnows and a red bead. Got caught out there a couple of times when the weather changed. The trick out there was finding the bait. Lol
@@tobykekoa6922 Should be action! I feel like they can be picky sometimes so smaller is better. We had hard time finding them too. Plenty shibis and stuff chasing them all over the place I think.
Np thanks for watching. Hilo side can be nice but since it's on the windward side, it's often pretty rough and even when it starts out calm in the morning conditions can flip quick. If you're used to Kona side I'll say that a typical Hilo day might seem really rough, especially if the trades are blowing at the usual 15 + knots. Fish-wise, it's like any other spot close to a harbor. Sometimes get fish and sometimes not!
Great content my braddah, I just started offshore kayak fishing and am in search of another angler to run with offshore. Haven't gone yet, solo for the first time seems alil sketchy. Lmk if can exchange info, much Mahalos- Jake D
Thanks man! Awesome that you're getting into offshore yakking, and good call on not going solo. Feel free to DM me and also might be a good idea to join the Hawaii Kayak Fishing FB group plenty great people there.

Love that intro. Early early morning Hilo bay is great. Nice opelu school though and the papio must have been brutal on your sabiki!!
Thanks! Yeah I feel lucky to find them everytime. Definitely gotta be careful what you drop the sabiki into!
Are you using a figure 8 to attach each fly line to your sabiki main line?
yeah its a figure 8 on the main line and the lighter leaders are threaded through the figure 8 and uni knotted onto the main
Nice opelu action!
Thanks! Definitely lucky to have a little koa so close to home.
You should do video on your opelu or your live bait setup. 🤙
I've actually been meaning to do that... soon 🤙

Bloodworms for flys?
HiPerformance "fish sticks". Same shape as bloodworms but I like the "stellar glo" from HPL. Works for everything.
