If you want to be a united singaporean from all races background, be like INDONESIA, speak one national language. Do not circle your community. Do not be exclusive. Do not racist. Because china is not a multiracial nation. But USA, is multinational nation. And english greet well by almost all nations worldwide.
You are international community. English speaking country. You are not racist nation. You are an open minded nation and neutral in politics. English is your mother tongue.
I agree that Mandarin is important and it is the most widely used Chinese language among all other Chinese languages/dialects, but I don't think Mandarin is part of our own personal roots or heritage. To be accurate, Mandarin is just an intermediate language between the Chinese people of different roots. A lot of us Chinese come from different heritage, for instance, Hokkien, Cantonese, Taishanese, Teochew, Hakka, Hainan etc. Mandarin is not really the mother tongue of most Chinese people. Our mother tongue depends on which Chinese heritage we come from. For example, if you are a Cantonese, Cantonese is your mother tongue.
But we arent taught those dialects in sch etc. Our chinese is already bad enough as it is because we dont use it alot and I honestly find it very sad. I love chinese but I dont think sch are teaching us right becuz the things they teach, we cant rlly apply to daily life etc stories in the 课本。
@@ale-hh7yl :I understand your predicament. I understand that the use of Chinese languages/dialects other than Mandarin in the mass media is banned in Singapore, and a lot of Singaporeans don't get much chance to learn other Chinese languages/dialects besides Mandarin, unless your parents, grandparents or relatives teach you. In Malaysia, Chinese languages/dialects other than Mandarin are still commonly used. Hence, on top of Mandarin, a lot of us, Malaysian Chinese, are still able to speak dialects like Hokkien, Cantonese, Teochew etc. However, I have to admit that the used of these languages/dialects are gradually decreasing as the years go by, which is kind of sad. This is probably because Mandarin is more useful compared to the other Chinese languages/dialects.
@@henrylau1743 : For your information, I did not the deny the importance of Mandarin. Mandarin is an important intermediate Chinese language that is usually used between Chinese people of different ethnic groups, and sometimes between Chinese people of the same ethnic group. Please don't get me wrong. I'm never against the use of Mandarin. However, what I'm unhappy about is the fact that some (not all) Chinese people seem to place other Chinese languages/dialects as low-class/status languages, and also deem people who speak these Chinese languages/dialects as low-class people. These group of people think that Mandarin is more prestigious than other Chinese languages/dialects. Due to that, many people don't want or refuse to learn the Chinese languages of their own heritage/in their area. Even if they know how to speak them, they refuse or are reluctant to speak in the Chinese languages of their own heritage/in their area. If this were to continue on, we may lose some Chinese cultures along the way. Different Chinese languages do carry their own cultures and hence, besides learning Mandarin, we should learn other Chinese languages as well, at least our own family's language or the local Chinese langauge in our area (for instance, Cantonese in Kuala Lumpur, Penang Hokkien in Penang etc.). If we don't do so, part of our Chinese culture will be extinct someday. Mandarin is just one of the many Chinese languages, but I don't deny the fact that Mandarin is the main Chinese language because it is used to unite Chinese people of different ethnic groups. In conclusion, besides learning Mandarin, I believe we should learn the Chinese languages/dialects of our own heritage, or the local Chinese languages/dialects of the place we stay in.
Natalia Chen Mandarin was not introduced in South East Asia until 1911 revolution in China. Chung Hwa Associations were built by Mainland sympathisers to educate locals on the ‘proper’ national language of their ‘motherland’. Not to say that we should not learn mandarin, but it is a fact that it was not the language of the people who came prior 1900s. I am surprised with the high education standard in Singapore, many young Singaporeans do not know the history of their own people.
Because of the tagline and publicity of "华人华语"。 To expect the ethnic Chinese to master their dialects when Mandarin as the language taught formally in classrooms is not being very successful, would be like expecting people who already does not do well in English with it being used that extensively in schools, to do well in Spanish or French.
Vee Halen excuse me, they are ‘languages’ not ‘dialects’. I don’t care if they managed to learn their ancestral languages. My point is not about their language skill in Hokkien, Hakka or Teochew. My point is their ignorance of the knowledge that mandarin is not ‘the language of their people, unless their ancestors came just half a century ago.
Mandarin is not only spoken by all the people from northern china, im a northern chinese myself and they also have their own way of speaking which is called northeastern chinese. Chinese was introduced centuries ago but people began having their own dialects after that, hokkien, cantonese and other dialects spoken in singapore are based on beijing mandarin, it just had some of its own southern elements, 👌👌 mandarin is your roots, dont call yourself a chinese if your so ignorant
I agree with you. Our own personal mother tongue depends on which Chinese heritage we come from. For instance, if you are a Hokkien, Hokkien is your mother tongue, not Mandarin.
Yup. It's so unfair for mainland Chinese to look down on us for not knowing mandarin cos many of us have grandparents and great grandparents who didn't even speak mandarin.
