As a singaporean currently studying degree I find this findings interesting. From my understanding most of my friends are all bilingual. Fluent in both language spoken wise. This is interesting.

How many of them really speak the their supposed mother tongues? Or third generation of french born and raised Vietnamese ? What about Ukrainians assimilated into Russia during soviet times?

I don't think so... His English sounds native. Most of his Chinese pronunciation sounds like Mainland Chinese (maybe his girlfriend corrected him) but some words (like 缺少) have Singaporean accent

Actually, there is a more efficient language than English or Chinese in Singapore, its call Singlish ( a mix of English, Chinese, Malay). Its the worlds more efficient spoken language. Haha. Anything in pure English or Chinese can be condensed into just a few words.

These "dialects" have developed their own written forms, intonations, and are used in formal classes even. Scholars have found that some of the 古诗 or old poems may have been written in Cantonese or 河洛话 by the original authors.

Barely surprising.. some caucasians can speak much better Mandarin than local Chinese people. All I can say is I'm very thankful to have met my Chinese teacher back in school & I know my mandarin is much better than these people. Just saying.. Btw not everyone uses coaster I believe :)

now try to memorise 4000 of those chinese characters, learn every single strokes of each character, learn its individual meanings, and its pronunciation. once uve done dat, come back and tell me whether u still like it or not

Some of them even have very limited vocab and poor grammar/sentence structure in English too but they keep saying they can speak perfect English too especially when communicating with foreigners which I sincerely doubted. the fact that they have too many languages is really not an excuse. Saying Liao feels like southeast asian chinese culture , actually it’s pretty common saying liao instead of le for us, we could change it to le when speaking to Mainland or Taiwan Chinese.

(Better than the "speak mandarin campaign" ! 👍👍 I'm the very fluent in mandarin kind by SG standard, can communicate with Taiwanese, Malaysian Chinese and PRC chinese etc (95%, but some words like face wash, "bathroom" they got different words in mainland and taiwanese mandarin etc). But your channel is doing a good job, maybe some day.... maybe some day you can make a list of these people who cannot speak mandarin fluent (actually i think the people here that you interviewed a number are the cannot even speak mandarin level, as good as a chinese speaking a few japanese words etc). Maybe some day if you can make a list of those people who want to learn mandarin maybe we can come out with something, I even know malaysian indian who can speak mandarin, maybe some day. unlike what some people commented.... the guy with a PRC shanghai born friend or gfren is NOT PRC born converted singaporean . No, he is not , based on his english sound and accents. he does speaks mandarin slightly different from most sinkees maybe because of a few factors: he mandarin tuition teachers or teachers from school from young age might be from china / taiwan or have more proper mandarin pronunciation setting. or he stayed some years in China/ taiwan and most likely due to his fact his Gfriend is from PRC .
Can’t blame them, they have difficulty appreciating the importance of speaking Mandarin because they weren’t shown why. I’m a proud Malay Singaporean who studied in Tianjin, and honestly mandarin is difficult because of ‘Hanzi’ or Chinese characters which is purely memorisation. Totally understandable.

The lady should not have said "Lao" is wrong. There is no right or wrong pronunciation. She does not understand our culture（Southerner) and that Singaporean Chinese are all from southern China and the "Liao" is actually used in both Cantonese and Hokkien.
"English is important" is because only we are in Singapore. Different country got different "settings". If in Malaysia Bahasa Malaysia is most important, followed by Mandarin, then English etc. If in thailand then thai language first. Our Singapore happen to be the only one after WW2, "merdeka" but realised our majority is not the indigenous population so to be fair they didn't make mandarin the main language but stick with English, end up we become like a "fake western" country. We are not US, we are not UK, we are not Canada, Australia, we are also not even part of western europe. Just happens so. Same for India, they funny they didn't use hindi or any one of the indian language as the main. The south koreans, the japanese and the taiwanese doing a wonderful job keeping their language and heritage.
@Jacky Phantom If in Taiwan, English is pretty much useless. I'm like a translator between Taiwanese people and foreigners when I was there. In Malaysia, both english and mandarin are useful. Sometimes mandarin even more useful, (100% the chinese malaysians can understand), english to non-chinese malaysians maybe 25% chance they understand. In Indonesia both languages would be useless but the indonesian chinese will either know some bit of mandarin or english. I have also met 2 or 3 vietnamese who can speak mandarin, so for this region it is quite useful as well. On top of it, I speak zero japanese, but japanese texts or anything uses some of the same chinese words, so even if reading you can roughly guess what is the context e.g. (Now I'm also learning Japanese). Bonus points is I realised more and more mainland china people coming out of china as tourists (other than Singapore, the only PRC coming here mostly are from the least developed provinces coming to work. Except sometimes some PRC coming in here as tourists. [Clothing sense very different])
I’m a Canadian who only speaks English (and a bit of Japanese) but I think it’s so interesting how you get correct answers with clearly different dialects. Just goes to show how diverse Cantonese can be (or is this mixing Cantonese/mandarin/etc.? I dunno)
I've stayed in Singapore for 6 months last year and, most people, young and old, switched to Chinese when they talked to me after knowing that I am Chinese. I think its probably the difficulty of talking in front of a camera AND when it's about something you are not familiar with. So if someone is new to Singapore and try to estimate Singaporeans' Chinese skills I would probably tell him/her that this video is not a true reflection.
I was shocked when I reached Tuas checkpoint of Singapore with a Chinese custom officer spoke to me in Classical Mandarin. It's surprised to see that, because I expected those Singaporeans would use their condescending Singlish to speak with me. It's a really "WOW" experience and I think Singaporeans are trying to embrace their ancestral roots and their sense of belonging.😁😁

So I don't think there's really a "international language" yet, although that is the story US is trying to put across. (Nothing wrong). But it's a fact that english is not "everything". If you are Singaporean, just step to neighbouring Batam etc. I think whole of Taiwan other than the capital don't speak english as well. Should be the same for Japan and South Korea etc. (Will learn that language first before I head over there next time). In our south of ASEAN actually I think Bahasa is also very major. In Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia etc need that to survive (BM and Bahasa Indonesia is 20% different but more or less can communicate). A lot of people don't speak english in the world, but they are operating on "another part" of world and also different part of the internet so if you keep on accessing websites with english point of view or in our country like singapore you will have that illusion. Still an important language but not everything. In Taichung I saw before a super awkward moment one foreigner only english-speaking and the 7-eleven guy - only mandarin-speaking and they both keep talking in their own language, buying things, thanking etc, but both don't understand each other at all but still works. Funny moment.
The future should be a multilingual world.

Actually, there is a more efficient language than English or Chinese in Singapore, its call Singlish ( a mix of English, Chinese, Malay).
Its the worlds more efficient spoken language. Haha.
Anything in pure English or Chinese can be condensed into just a few words.
*Mandarin* , not Chinese. Cantonese, Hokkien, Hakka, Teochew etc are Chinese languages too, just not as many users compared to Mandarin.

Scholars have found that some of the 古诗 or old poems may have been written in Cantonese or 河洛话 by the original authors.

Saying Liao feels like southeast asian chinese culture , actually it’s pretty common saying liao instead of le for us, we could change it to le when speaking to Mainland or Taiwan Chinese.

(Better than the "speak mandarin campaign" ! 👍👍 I'm the very fluent in mandarin kind by SG standard, can communicate with Taiwanese, Malaysian Chinese and PRC chinese etc (95%, but some words like face wash, "bathroom" they got different words in mainland and taiwanese mandarin etc). But your channel is doing a good job, maybe some day.... maybe some day you can make a list of these people who cannot speak mandarin fluent (actually i think the people here that you interviewed a number are the cannot even speak mandarin level, as good as a chinese speaking a few japanese words etc). Maybe some day if you can make a list of those people who want to learn mandarin maybe we can come out with something, I even know malaysian indian who can speak mandarin, maybe some day. 虽然总的来说大陆普通话扶正了很多北京土语作为标准普通话词汇，但是台湾国语和新马华语也扶正了一些北京土话词汇。

I can understand the reason why “了“ is pronounced as "liao" in Singaporean and Malaysian Mandarin.
"了" is pronounced as "liao" in local Beijing dialect in the beginning of the 20th century, just as "和" pronounced as "han" in Taiwan Mandarin.
Though quite a huge amount of Beijing local words and slangs are standardized in mainland Chinese mandarin, some other Beijing words are also standardized by Mandarin in Taiwan, Singapore, and Malaysia.
其实是因为新马福建话（闽南语）和潮州话表示完成就是用liau，就和新加坡人在问句时和感叹路喜欢加meh和lor（广东话/粤语助词）一样。
6:11，le说成liao，应该是闽南话潮州话的影响。

it’s because they mainly use english in daily conversations. but mix that with chinese whenever seems fit. what you see in this video is the product.
unlike what some people commented.... the guy with a PRC shanghai born friend or gfren is NOT PRC born converted singaporean . No, he is not , based on his english sound and accents. he does speaks mandarin slightly different from most sinkees maybe because of a few factors: he mandarin tuition teachers or teachers from school from young age might be from china / taiwan or have more proper mandarin pronunciation setting. or he stayed some years in China/ taiwan and most likely due to his fact his Gfriend is from PRC .

Can’t blame them, they have difficulty appreciating the importance of speaking Mandarin because they weren’t shown why. I’m a proud Malay Singaporean who studied in Tianjin, and honestly mandarin is difficult because of ‘Hanzi’ or Chinese characters which is purely memorisation. Totally understandable.

新加坡人学中文就像我学老家方言一样，国家推普多少年了，年轻人在家都是听老人讲方言但自己不怎么讲，在外和人交往又基本都是讲普通话。年轻人不会说家乡方言的情况已经很普遍了，我这边基本上都是会听不会说。而新加坡官方主要还是推英语，我看着他们的半吊子中文，就跟老一辈温州人看我的温州话一样，明明是温州人连温州话都讲不好属实离谱。不过至少新加坡华人学习中文还是有环境的，只要想学也可以学好。我最近在家也尽量不用普通话，家里有讲方言的氛围，多练习一下也是好的

@@chia-haochou8102 le is a particle in Standard Mandarin which indicates perfective aspect e.g. zhidao-le 知道了 to have known or an interjective particle 明天是周六了; while liao is a verb, e.g. liaojie 了解 liaoran 了然. The particle 了 can be read as LIAO only in Peotic situation in Standard Mandarin.

The lady should not have said "Lao" is wrong. There is no right or wrong pronunciation. She does not understand our culture（Southerner) and that Singaporean Chinese are all from southern China and the "Liao" is actually used in both Cantonese and Hokkien.

"English is important" is because only we are in Singapore. Different country got different "settings". If in Malaysia Bahasa Malaysia is most important, followed by Mandarin, then English etc. If in thailand then thai language first. Our Singapore happen to be the only one after WW2, "merdeka" but realised our majority is not the indigenous population so to be fair they didn't make mandarin the main language but stick with English, end up we become like a "fake western" country. We are not US, we are not UK, we are not Canada, Australia, we are also not even part of western europe. Just happens so. Same for India, they funny they didn't use hindi or any one of the indian language as the main. The south koreans, the japanese and the taiwanese doing a wonderful job keeping their language and heritage.

@Jacky Phantom If in Taiwan, English is pretty much useless. I'm like a translator between Taiwanese people and foreigners when I was there. In Malaysia, both english and mandarin are useful. Sometimes mandarin even more useful, (100% the chinese malaysians can understand), english to non-chinese malaysians maybe 25% chance they understand. In Indonesia both languages would be useless but the indonesian chinese will either know some bit of mandarin or english. I have also met 2 or 3 vietnamese who can speak mandarin, so for this region it is quite useful as well. On top of it, I speak zero japanese, but japanese texts or anything uses some of the same chinese words, so even if reading you can roughly guess what is the context e.g. (Now I'm also learning Japanese). Bonus points is I realised more and more mainland china people coming out of china as tourists (other than Singapore, the only PRC coming here mostly are from the least developed provinces coming to work. Except sometimes some PRC coming in here as tourists. [Clothing sense very different])
I keep forgetting that Singapore favors English over Chinese so I'm really surprised that they don't speak better Mandarin.

I've stayed in Singapore for 6 months last year and, most people, young and old, switched to Chinese when they talked to me after knowing that I am Chinese. I think its probably the difficulty of talking in front of a camera AND when it's about something you are not familiar with. So if someone is new to Singapore and try to estimate Singaporeans' Chinese skills I would probably tell him/her that this video is not a true reflection.

I was shocked when I reached Tuas checkpoint of Singapore with a Chinese custom officer spoke to me in Classical Mandarin. It's surprised to see that, because I expected those Singaporeans would use their condescending Singlish to speak with me. It's a really "WOW" experience and I think Singaporeans are trying to embrace their ancestral roots and their sense of belonging.😁😁
