- This video from defensivedrivin... features nationally recognized driver safety expert Dr. William Van Tassel, Manager of Driver Training Operations at the American Automobile Association's (AAA) National Headquarters. Using step-by-step instructions, Dr. Van Tassel demonstrates the correct way to jump start a dead battery.
I went through an ordeal this morning. Even the jump pack lost its charge. This a good tutorial as I hadn't shut the heater off in the running car. Got a spark placing positive and negative cables on the dead car first.
I believe recent videos have said you can try to start receiver car right away with donor engine shut off, since it is now a complete circuit with donor battery, but it is better to put a little charge in receiver battery first, and this is necessary if battery is too dead, so you run donor engine for a few minutes to re-charge the dead battery and then shut off donor engine before trying to start receiving engine - never have both engines running simultaneously. I will stick with only one engine running at a time.
Wow guy at 2:29 must have a very exciting life
Also, while doing the jump, never let your hands touch the car battery's terminals with your bare hands especially on very dry days or on days with very low humidity. This is the best time for you to get static shocks--static shocks can create sparks which can, if good enough, cause the battery to blow or catch fire. Discharge the static by touching your leg on the metal part of the car and touching the hand's metal bumper before you touch the battery's terminals with your hands.
"why do you have to start this car first"@2:35 Maybe because the other car has a DEAD BATTERY
Danko A The current is still being transferred smart ARSE
Actually, I've seen boosting being done by just touching the dead battery without even starting the supply car. Starting the car just insure proper distribution of current so you don't have to start all over again.
On some cars you don't want the donor car running. Some diesels for example. The glow plugs are designed to operate at the resting voltage of the battery, not the charging voltage, which you have when the donor car is running. Having it running could fry the dead car's glow plugs. With diesels I hook them up, run the donor car for a bit, shut it off, then start the dead car.
"We've got to turn off all heaters, lights, ACs," *looks away in silence* "Well now we've done that."
Thanks that was so helpful. Just successfully jump started my car on the first try!
Really nice video. Very helpful, thanks
And with these newer vehicles with the computer I do not jump start a car to car
This is some good advice....BUT, as an eye specialist and as a medical advisor for Prevent Blindness, I must say this---The risk of battery explosion in your face as you are in front of the battery and that explosion blinding you is very real.... I wish that this "expert" had recommended putting on glasses and used glasses and that he actually recommended that the last/4th connection NOT go to the dead battery because that is when the new spark can create the possibility of the explosion. I also wish that he actually followed his instructions/directions of removing the cables in the 4,3,2,1 sequence that told us to do...Almost 99% of all traumatic blindness is preventable..
you can connect the “-“ to another metallic part of the vehicle to prevent an explosion
I thought after a couple min you would cut the running car off because if the dead car starts while the good one is running then it would potentially damage the good car's alternator, due to the fact that once a car starts, it's not running off the battery but the alternator.
I could be wrong, but if I am, please explain how?
Great vid, better than all the rest!! Thank you!!!!
This is a very good idea what to do and you can trust the picture is worth it for me to know what I'm doing good.
I thought one should NEVER connect to the - on the dead battery because it could cause the battery to explode if done too many times.
Yeah you set it to ground, not the negative terminal
While attached to an Army tank regiment, I saw a soldier attempt to jump-start a Centurion Tank auxiliary power plant adjacent to the driver's position. It was a Morris 800cc engine installed in all Centurions to generate electricity while the main driving engine was "off". There was an almighty explosion due to arcing, igniting fuel vapors within the tank. His head-dress (Armour Corps beret) flew up into the air of the enclosed shed, as his unprotected head was smashed onto steel armour plating. I heard later that he survived, but with traumatic head injury. Take care while jump-starting any vehicle.
Eight days ago my friend's SUV battery died. He took a nap in the car with engine off but head lights on. Another friend came to jump start. HIS ENGINE WAS "ON" the whole time. Placed cables on positive to positive and negative to ground. The dead car started without problem on either car.
@jordy365247 yes if you cant start the dead car then let it sit for a while longer and then rev the vehicle increases the rpm and spins the alternator faster and will produce more current.
If the battery's already dead, no hydrogen will build up. Hydrogen only vents when charging due to side reactions with the battery acting as an electrolytic cell. After the jump, it may be important, but it's not critical and it's not like anything is going to blow up in your face, it's not a huge problem and doesn't really matter.
@MrPoochTheGreat Your right, but most people dont think about that. They just take a chance
just fo the record, whe he was disconnecting the cables, he said " disconnect in reverse order" but the 3rd cable he disconnected was the positive on the bad battery and supposed to disconnect as 3rd the positive on the good battery car
2:35 Because the other car wont start..
you think your smart but the batteries are attached man, you can start the dead car first it;s just gona be a heavy haul on the live battery
Nice video, THANKS!
My friend has an electric car. Can I use his car to jump my regular car?
Yes it is dead but it is now connected to a good battery. When you try to start the dead car it will pull current from the good battery...so its a reasonable question considering it will start either way.
I think everyone in drivers ed should be taught how to jumpstart a car, change a tire, and change the oil. I just think everyone should know how to do that stuff, because everyone has to eventually. And if you never get a flat or a dead battery, then drive more.
Am I the only one who saw him dodge that question a 1:47 like a politician?
True. He never answered the question. And then had the audacity to think they were too stupid to know he didn't. He definitely has political potential.
which year was this movie made?
very well explained. never done it before, but I am confident I can do this now. great video. thanks for posting.
If you have a newer car, Always try to avoid direct battery to battery connection of the jumper cables. Battery to battery is fine for older cars but with today's tech in modern cars you can actually damage your new car.
@XYooper906
This is absolutely correct!!!!!!!!!!!
No. the good car have to be running... rev the car to about 2000rpm helps, so when you start the bad car the voltage do not go under 12.5 volts
Great, you're almost right. OK so the Good battery is not charging wildly, so it is not giving of Hydrogen (explosive) and oxygen (helps Hydrogen burn) too much. The Dead battery IS charging, so it will give off lots of Hydrogen (from electrolysis) and oxygen (as described earlier). So, ALWAYS disconnect the GOOD battery first as otherwise you can get a SPARK next to the DEAD battery which is giving off EXPLOSIVE Hydrogen. I hope you are all still alive after watching this video. Take care and don't believe everything you see first. Even "self professed experts" can get it the wrong way around.
Can anyone enlighten me on what make the leads are, cannot find any like that in UK only the 2 separate leads
an explorer jumping an outback, thats the laugh of the day right here. since you can't really leave your lights on in a subaru.
At 1:38 he tells you to connect directly to the negative post of the dead battery, and implies that it is OPTIONAL to connect on the frame. WRONG! The whole point of connecting to an (unpainted) part of the frame or engine is to keep any sparks away from the battery. The last connection will cause a momentary spark, and COULD cause an explosion from the hydrogen gas that may be venting from the battery. At 4:51 he then warns not to smoke or light matches near the battery. I guess a spark is OK??
ive heard you should connect the batteries while the car is running, or else the dead battery can drain the other battery if it is kind of an old battery...
Here's suggestion, invest in a power battery jumper! It's way more reliable and better than using jumper cable.
I suppose people could wear goggles and gloves while doing this as an extra preventative measure. What about letting the jumped battery run for half an hour or so afterwards?
This is very contradicting, they say never start from the + positive terminal yet, he connected both positives first, I mean, I can't make this up!
Wait...should I test the terminals with my mouth?
My dads car is like no battery my mom try to fix it but is didn't work
Yeah, that makes no sense. A 9/12/14 volt battery always puts out the same voltage. Amperage and current rise and fall as the battery discharges and charges. It would kill the electronics in your car if voltage wasn't constant.
No explanation why you start with the positive end...
Explanation is, that if you start with negative and you accitendly touch the frame with the positive cable you might get a short circuit.
is it really important to attach the positive end of the cable to the positive end of the dead battery first rather than positive end of the cable to the positive end of the live battery first?.... sorry, just making some notes.
That doesn't really matter. Important is to start with the positive end. :)
After the car with dead battery starts, the red clamp from the car with dead battery must be removed last...
I hear you are NOT supposed to start the dead car while the good car is running... you should turn off the good car then start the bad one.
Why do you start the NON dead car first as opposed to the dead car that wont start? Did she really ask that???
Oh so why the black gotta be negative
why did you switch cars and drivers? confusing
just fo the record, whe he was disconnecting the cables, he said " disconnect in reverse order" but the 3rd cable he disconnected was the positive on the bad battery and supposed to disconnect as 3rd the positive on the good battery car
this video need correcting......... not good enough
this could have been done a lot quicker than 4:57.
aop videos Well, they did answer some good questions
@jonbenonly2011 I bet you get that a lot. Aren't you used to it yet?
Ok so my friends battery died and I told him to put one of the negative clamps to the frame of the car... He looked at me like I was dumb.
Oops..."the car's metal bumper", not the "hand's metal bumper."
He didnt remove the cables in reverse order watch closely....
Yeah positive live wasn't 3rd in order
😀😃😄They doing too Much!👊🏽
Touching the negative and positive terminals together when connected to a battery is like welding without wearing a welding mask, you just don't do it.
Am I the only one going to comment on the fact that the dude was named Renee? lol
His left hand is shaking around so much...they say if you move around too much your lying..wonder if hes lying here.?
"AWH THATS ALL ME!!"
Suppose cars of today can be jump start with live battery bacause it might spoil the ECU of the dead battery vehicle.
If you have a good cable connection you don't need to start slave car.
@loopyboopoo1 Where in the hell is THIS coming from???? lol! Yeah you probably do when it comes to car batteries. What you find as you get older is that the more you know, the more aware you are of what little you know. More power to ya kid, lol. One other thing too keep in mind; everyone is good at something, noone is good at everything and every person has their individual strengths but they can fail miserably at simple things at times. I have no clue what brought you onto me, lol.
Hi youtube
2:36 lol seriously??
It would be pretty fucking nice to see a 15 second video just so i can know the fucking order to set the clamps. Seriously...
What? Wait a few minutes for the dead battery to charge up after starting up the full battery vehicle?? What a load of rubbish, just rev up the engine and hold it steady at about 2,500 RPM and then see if the other vehicle will start! When the other vehicle starts, leave the engine to idle for about half an our in order for the alternator to charge the battery.
Like a girl that hot will ever have to jump start her own battery in her lifetime.
oh oh that's all me
WRONG!!! in newer cars you should NOT start the good car it will destroy your cars computer only start the bad car! After you remove the cables from the good car you then can start the good car!
@Restaurant25 LOL
Who wrote the dialogue? and do they do pornos?
Go watch ChrisFix video "How to Properly Jump Start a Car".. More informative and real than thisvideo.
he did a no no he had her start the car that had the dead battery before having the car that was jumping shut down.
+Justin Selles Why would you shut it down?
Because of the computer in that car would mess up because with both cars with computers in them and if you try to start the one that had a dead battery while the one that was jumping that one is still running I could take out the computer and that car would not run right and you would have to shell out the money to buy a new computer for that particular vehicle that's why jumping a car with a computer in it with another car that has a computer in it is a no no unless you shut off the other one that you were using to jump the other car that's why you shut it down.
Justin Selles How will the computers be affected? Actually you need to keep the car running so not to drain the other battery.
Phoenix, it seems that Justin knows something that you don't about cars.
Older mechanics recommend this. IDK if it applies to new cars, but it is STILL relevant information and bears mentioning. Some old cars are still on the road.. And it could be that it applies even more to modern cars, with all the computers they have.
I'm going to heed Justin's advice and only run car at a time.
The only thing that's gonna happen when you shut down the car that's full is that the battery will start draining instead of charging both.
HEY GET BACK IN THE KITCHUN!
HAHAHAHAHA!!!
She's a cutie...looks like Ashley Judd..
she has no idea what he's saying duhhhh
@a9bomb Hahahahahah
Wrong, all wrong!!!
?
?
the dead car gets both cables, the fresh car gets the positive only and negative to ground.....
+Mike Oneill The negative on the live battery should be connected because that's where the electrons flow from. Obviously on the video it worked, so..
Doesn't make it right.....
I hate that the woman actress is supposedly driving the car with the dead battery and asking all the questions. Meanwhile the man is the one with all the answers and the other man is there to save the day by jumping off her car. I wish we could break free from these stereotypes!!
Wow...was this made in the 1980s when lady brains were incapable of understanding man talk?
Why is it the woman asking all the questions? And she's such a bad actress. She looks like she's reading off of a cue card, it's awkward.
