Thanks for the help, I jumped my wife's car following this after it had been sitting around for weeks. You're going to have a lot more views soon with all this quarantine stuff
Spot on. Thank you. Just watched as a refresher and started another car. Remember folks your using the battery and not fuel so no more asking about petrol and diesel cars.
Good video, with a nice touch of humour. Closed the electric windows last night,....... they crawled up painfully slow as had had the key turned on for some hours. Fortunately had jump leads standing by and car started like a dream. Haven't used Jumpers for a long, long time, but as luck would have it, had them stored away. Very clear instructional video....Many thanks
I don't know much Car Mechanic stuff. You are absolutely brilliant!! Straight forward, to the point video, no messing about. You explain it so simple and well. Thank! you! mate
Got the salient part regarding the order to connect and disconnect the jump leads which is the bit you need to know. I just watched an RAC video on this very subject and they glossed over that bit like they don’t really want you to know. Interesting.
It'll probably work however you do it, but the order to do them is really to avoid sparks, which have the potential to be dangerous. If there's no negative, just use bare metal earthing point on the body shell of car. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching.
Not the proper one mate thats the old school teaching in modern car now it may damage your car ECU it cost more money than replacing your battery ask the real good mechanic
Thank you very much. I should have watched this before buying a new battery. I tried jump leading without this knowledge and without checking if the jump leads cross section cable were 53 mm square. My car is VW Passat 2010 diesel.
You gave us the 'idiot proof' instructions lol thank you so much! Defo the best explanation on here, clear & precise! Now pray my old gal will start 😂😂😂
Dead Red to Donor Red, Donor Black (which can be on the battery or engine block bare metal) to Dead Black engine block bare metal. Wait 30 seconds, both vehicles off. Then 2 minutes with Donor vehicle on, then turn on Dead vehicle, run for five minutes, both cars on. Then shut off donor vehicle, keep dead vehicle running. Take off cables in reverse order. Dead vehicle to drive around for at least 15 minutes. The Black cable doesn’t have to be attached to either the dead or donor battery, just engine block metal is sufficient.
@@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE I am still here thank you! About to to repeat the procedure for a second time . . . My son's car, God give me strength! So funny your video :)
Reason I'm here is I just tried to jump start an 02 Corsa from a Nissan Note this morning and almost caused a fire! The jump leads melted! The Corsa battery has been a bit sluggish recently but the very morning it is due to go to the garage for an MOT/service it wouldn't start! My garage mechanic came around and said that I connected it backwards and that the "red" cable on the Corsa battery was in fact a dirty brown cable and the positive terminal has a black cable! Why is it made so confusing? Red and black cables for positive and negative would be logical! Oh well I hope I won't make that mistake again! Thanks for posting your tutorial.
I don't run the engine on the car with the charged battery to save its electrics when the other car starts and I always let the jumped car run for five minutes before I disconnect to allow its electrics to stabilize. I wonder why jump leads aren't supplied with a jack lead so you can make the last connection away from the engine compartment.
FYI, if the car with the flat battery has ‘Stop/Start’ feature you must not attach the negative lead to the negative battery terminal, always attach to bare earth body work. If you attach to the battery terminal you will never in a month of Sundays be able to jump start the car.
If the battery has a cover on it but has a lift up flap to expose the positive terminal but the battery has a negative terminal but you can't see it because of the cover, does this mean connect the negative cable to an earthing point instead?
Thanks. Attaching one of the the black negative grips to the car bonnet, or other metal part of the car body, as earth, as suggested in some videos, did not work for me. The car only started when the negative terminals were connected to each other. Some people here suggesting that the attachment point was not providing sufficient earth and a better location would make it start. Once home, fully charge the battery via a mains charger. It will never fully recharge by driving the car.
Pretty much yes any bit of solid metal if you can’t find the proper earthing point but they are usually in the vicinity of the live terminal, usually on the body of the car inside the engine bay on the side nearest the positive terminal. They sometimes have a bit of shiny black insulating rubber around the cable leading up to it indicating it is an earth cable and usually a negative symbol on the face of the terminal if there is one. If you can’t find one of these use the negative terminal on the battery but it isn’t ideal. If you’re stuck, UA-cam the model of your car for the earthing point I’m sure there will be something.
Yes you can use a non painted (bare metal) bit of body work. Make sure it's not part of the engine though in case it interferes with the car electrics. Usually a bare metal bolt or nut is good. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching and best of fuck with it!
In respect of battery terminals and if you only have short jumper cables :- Your car battery is on the offside / driver side Your donor car battery is on the offside / driver side. i.e. both same make and model etc. NO problem The donor car reverses into the driveway (their car is running) and you let off your handbrake and let it slowly roll back till you can reach their battery with your short cables. It might be handy to have a piece of rope or use the BLACK cable as a guide length. The car with the flat battery the driver stays in the car because they are parked so close to the wall, this does not apply if the passenger side is not obstructed. The donor car driver then connect's Negative to Negative and then Positive to Positive. This system is ONLY if you have short jumper cables. The driver with the flat battery then starts their car. No worries
I was always taught to start engine of good battery before attaching leads so it doesn't drain the good battery.Clear instructions though as per usual Pouse 👍🏻
@@_blackheartemoji_2189 you will get the current flowing regardless of the engines on or off, their is always a load on the car circuit more so in modern cars than older ones, no harm in having the donating car engine running yes it can akso save you the embarrassment of needing a jump start yourself, if your battery is old or not used for a time etc.
Yep good idea, especially if your own battery is not the best, might save you needing a jump start yourself, can add a few extra volts to the car needing the rescue, which is a plus in starting along with heavy enough leads.
Never run both cars at same time as both alternators are working against each other, turn off car with good battery just before starting flat car, correct?
7 years later and this is still the best how to jump start your car! Thank you!!😅
You're welcome!

Can I ask what is an earthing point? Is it literally any piece of metal in the bonnet? I’m a new driver so I’m just a bit confused
