Semi related info for Samsung users who don't know - Samsung introduced wireless Miracast support this year for most recent flagships and mid range phones and tablets. I think it works for most DeX enabled devices. And it's supposed to work both ways - as transmitter and receiver. When you get into the Smart View menu you can choose the mode. For some reason, I couldn't get my Tab S5e to pick my smartphone's signal, but I didn't insist much as it was only a test... prolly doing somethin wrong, but the option is there. Unfornately, for laptops and desktops, I think this is a Windows thing mostly. But it works pretty nicely with a generic Miracast dongle on TV... it's nice to be able to use TV wirelessly as a screen with a single dongle that works with my smartphone, tablet and laptop. xD And since I'm on Samsung devices, also DeX... only wish Samsung would keep working on it more. I get the latency and lag worries though.
When dex uses miracast, the latency is high since the packets route through your wifi. However connecting dex supported device to these TVs/Monitor, the experience is truly amazing, zero lag game play.
I have Raspberry Pi 4B kit, and Android Samsung S4 tab tablet, you think my macbookpro 2016, usb-c to HDMI adapter should work on S4 tablet--Rpi4B? To use S4 display...?
Its hard to gauge the latency of the setup from the video. Say you connected a full pc instead of the pi, would you be able to game, or would the lag kill the experience?
Took me a long time, but I finally found the solution!!! And then, now that I had already bought the necessary items, I had the ideanof checking ETA prime! Lol. I bought a battery pack as well, hoping it will work!

I always felt like this functionality should be built right into chromebooks. It would work well for college students. Take the chromebook to class then when in the dorm, plug it into a desktop system and you have the screen, keyboard, mouse, and webcam right there.
Eta do you think you can develop an app the dose this with touchscreen support It is posable you just need to connect a usb a to a cable and devolup driver for computer
Do you know if this can work on an iPad mini with a lightning connector? and if so, what is the relevant app required?... Obviously, I understand that the cable from the capture card would need to be female USB to lightning, rather than USB -C
I’ve found you can do this with Windows 8+ laptop (and probably any windows device). Plug the pi, hdmi cables and video capture device together and into pc USB 3.0 port after turning on the pi (I used a pi4). Windows will (slowly) recognise the video capture device receiving the pi output as a web cam. Then you can just open the camera app then select “change camera” and your laptop screen displays the pi output. Having tried official usb camera connect apps, the simple windows built in camera app worked the best!
I just got a Raspberry Pi 400 about a month ago, and I'm getting tired of using my giant TV as a screen. It limits how much I use it, and so I've barely used it. Thanks for taking the time to relay this interesting little RPi travel hack. Definitely something I'll keep in mind when the plague has left the land and travel to conferences has returned.
Got one of these cheap capture cards. Works great with the Pi 4B. Doesn't work at all with the Switch; video output stays black, no sound. It's too bad there aren't better apps for this. The one he uses seems to be one of the best, but even it lacks basic features like auto-fill the screen. Normally everything is pixel perfect with your device's display, even in "full screen mode", so if you have say a 2K display on your phone, you have to manually pinch to zoom and be verrry precise with your tweaking. ETAPrime also didn't mention that in order to NOT have an ad overlapping your video feed, you gotta pay $5.49 for the pro version of the app. Finally, latency is OK but not great. Probably in the realm of 200-300ms. There's a reason he isn't recommending this for games - only a classic turn-based RPG would be playable like this, and even then it'd be annoying IMO. Also, using a mouse or doing a lot of typing with this method would probably see the latency drive me nuts. Holding out hope that Genki ShadowCast will really bring a viable use case to the table with its lower latency. Otherwise this is really only good for consuming video, which... I mean, a tablet or phone can do that on its own!
Thank you for this!! Quick question; will the tablet or phone still run background processes at the same time? I.e. Hotspot so that you can use the pi via phone Hotspot? I'm ordering these hardware cables/ adapter tonight so I'll try😊
Very cool. Just FYI (and anyone who watched this video), that video capture dongle now costs $30 :-/ .. I'm sure there must be cheaper equivalent ones.
I wonder did pi400 charge the iPad? I have a monitor with only one TypeC plug in, the cable connect to the monitor should provide the electricity and the video output at the same time. (I am not quite sure but I think HDMI cable do not provide power output right?). Try to find a way make the monitor works.
Ive tried this with my Gaming PC to my Phone (Poco M4 Pro 5G). Any Resolution better than 800x600 has glitches that make everything unplayable, even with more expensive versions. Elgato etc isnt supported either.
So how can we control a ras one of those mini comps with a touchscreen using cable connection. Controlling accessories and a few vital components for engine/vehicle function. And what's the most secure and or fastest connection
what android version is the Phone/Tablet in the video? I tried Android 10 Samsung Tab S4 --- but it didn't work... Instead of "perching a cheap USB to HDMI capture card" I have used USB-C to HDMI adapter from Mac book pro 2016...
What is the battery impact on the Android device? The CPU on there is going to be running a core pretty hard, reading frames off the dongle over usb, and then submitting them to a graphics api. The GPU will also be lit up to composite the final frame.

Thanks for the great video! Any suggestions for USB camera software in the Amazon ecosystem without sideloading Google apps? I would love to see an update with a kindle fire 10.
I think it would vary from one device to the next but I'm doubtful. I used to use a UVC (same usb chip as this) capture for my FPV cars and my Note 3 as the display, it would work fine directly but if I used a hub between the phone and capture device I would get "stream not found" warnings and no video.
Funny enough, I use a old capture card so I can hook up old composite video game consoles to my Win98 computer's monitor. Same idea as this, just an ancient implementation.
Is there any free/libre open source app available to use this as an usb camera? I don't have a play store on my phone and prefer not to use proprietary software.
Could you in theory install touch calibration on the PI (like with the touch displays that go into the GPIO pins) and calibrate the phone for touch use?

what recs do you have for a 7"(small form factor) monitor w/ speakers.. Im using a raspb Pi Zero W. I was hoping to not have too many cables running around. . Or would you rec a small tablet for gaming(emulation specifically)
I tested for the fun if I could use my cheap USB HDMI capture on my Chromebook and it works even with the built-in camera app which is funny because you switch between cameras so a third camera was added because my Chromebook already have two of them. Funny to have DeX running on my Chromebook screen...

It's not worth it by that point just by a portable monitor even oled ones are cheap.
Best way to do this so you can charge tablet at the same time?
This will be great to use as an 2nd display for my laptop on the go
So how can we control a ras one of those mini comps with a touchscreen using cable connection.
And the phone is more powerful than the pi so why not just get a Bluetooth keyboard with a track pad, job done.
@@michaelwight9851 You have full admin access to an open Linux system with GPIO pins and an ecosystem of add-ons around making and tinkering on the Pi but not on your Android devices. Definitely use the Android device directly if it meets your needs though.
@@AndrewHelgeCox you then would buy a screen.
Thanks for the great video! Any suggestions for USB camera software in the Amazon ecosystem without sideloading Google apps? I would love to see an update with a kindle fire 10.
Very useful even for a quick raspberry pi setup
Amazingly this works on ChromeOS (even if your chromebook does not have Android apps.)
Could a USB hub or splitter be used so the tablet can be charged at the same time?
I think it would vary from one device to the next but I'm doubtful.
I used to use a UVC (same usb chip as this) capture for my FPV cars and my Note 3 as the display, it would work fine directly but if I used a hub between the phone and capture device I would get "stream not found" warnings and no video.
Funny enough, I use a old capture card so I can hook up old composite video game consoles to my Win98 computer's monitor. Same idea as this, just an ancient implementation.
This is nice. I'm thinking of using this setup with my jetson nano and tab s8 for deep learning programming on the go
Loved the vid....is there a way to do this with an iPad, or iPad Pro??
I can use my table as a display? Sweet!
Thumbnail says "table" instead of tablet my dude...
I Was Searching For This Comment
@@abhinavhimself me too it would be cool tho a table that doubles as a monitor maybe the next thing
This is great, i have always wan to use my tablet screen as a monitor
this is nice!!! i want this to setup or troubleshoot new pcs without plug in them in my main screen. thank you!!!!
Yo dawg! I heard you like using your electronic devices with your electronic devices...
Is there any free/libre open source app available to use this as an usb camera? I don't have a play store on my phone and prefer not to use proprietary software.
Could you in theory install touch calibration on the PI (like with the touch displays that go into the GPIO pins) and calibrate the phone for touch use?
thank you for sharing this, I came from Reddit
Hmm seems like a fun project for a small tv box to add a hdmi input function..
I love the title having "on your table or phone" instead of tablet lol 😂
I'm pondering whether to use this kind of setup, can you tell me if the tablet is still powered/charging while using this device and do you know if it works with a USB to micro USB adapter ?
This is freaking insane! Genius!
what recs do you have for a 7"(small form factor) monitor w/ speakers..
Funny to have DeX running on my Chromebook screen...
there's a lot of delay it seems, seeing you move the mouse
I tried playing my 360 over a similar card plugged into my computer and the lag was immense.
Try using usb 3.0 version
Try different video settings
USB 2.0 Only 30fps. Try the USB 3.0 version.
hey ETA PRIME, excellent video really interested in this setup, will this work with a female USB to micro USB cable to connect to a Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 tablet?
Yes, I would like to know if it works with a micro USB cable / port for those older android tablets as well. Thanks!
how would this work if you have usb c 3.2 and you want to output a display? for example steamdeck or thunderbolt on a laptop?
All Raspberry Pi OSs can installed in Rpi4B work with an Android tablet... screen?? And Raspbian OS
Thanks for the video.. I was looking for something like this for a long time. 1 question though .... when the Raspberry Pi HDMI --> HDMI Capture Card -> USB to MicroUSB -> Smartphone connection is going on ... does the smartphone keep getting charged ? Because I am gonna use an old smartphone and it does not retain charge for long. Thanks for answering ....
