Not true for streaming device. The apps are constantly updated and often they refuse to work if you do not update your app. The problem with old devices is the Operating system will not be updated up to a certain point. Which in turn will also impact all apps that depend on it.
I have an old Samsung phone that I loaded with news and weather aps and keep it on wifi at all times. That way I will always get breaking news, weather, and allergy alerts. I also have it connected to my security cams so I get instant alerts from them and I keep a bunch of mp3 files on it.

i use an old tablet for marine navigation on my old Bayliner boat , Navionics is a good example !
If the tablet or phone is too old, you can forget most of these ways!
