I done similar conversion to my 1.8t years ago. Just I used Febi 06687 tension roller with washer under it, G1283H timing belt, and no small roller seen in this video. It done almost 100 000 km and it just had new kit installed. Works perfectly to me. I also keep checking timing belt tension regularly, but only needed to do it once on the first kit.
@@normantasstr4451 Unfortunately I can not tell, as it was long time ago. I measured gap between original tension roller and surface where it touches engine, then did same with new tension roller and done the math to calculate washer size. I hope you get the idea.
Would i have to buy all this stuff again next belt change or do you all sell a kit with the parts that aren't reusable? Like just the belt n tensioner. Will any rolling tensioner work afterward ?
thanks for the having the time to prepare this and upload it to all of us ......waitting for IE exhaust manifold for my 4motion/haldex 1.8T :D keep up all the great work and best of luck on ur upcoming projects.
So my timing belt makes a wierd noise when its in low rpms so i think its the tensioner but i wanna know if theres a way to just fix it and not have to pay for a new one?
abit late probably, but you just have to cash out for a new tensioner, might aswell change the belt at the same time, i had the belt snap on my VW 1.6TD, byebye valved, camshaft and lifters.

You can try tightening a little more and see if that helps. It's common for timing belts to stretch a little as they wear. For that reason we recommend checking the belt tension at every oil change.
Checked it, front run was re-adjusted. This time around i used the gates. It is a noisy belt, and i believe it to be un balanced. I should have just sticked with OEM belt. Live and Learn. Also you're idler bearing is squealing something fierce.
@@kevinp4532Damn, you just saved me a lot of stress! I was gonna buy the gates one but now I’m going to just keep it oem. Thank you so much, one comment also says with this upgrade you have to check the tension every oil change and there’s no way I’m doing that
From what i know there is a split between the years 2000 and 2001 the 058 block has the water pump outside of the timing belt and 06A block has the water pump internally on the timing belt also the oil pump is slightly different i believe as well to how they are routed

Coming from a Naturally Aspirated Golf 2.0, it's worth it, the tensioner is very straightforward especially for future service. It's uncommon for the tension to come defective.
Check to see if you have an external or internal waterpump. Internal waterpump will be driven off the timing belt =06A and a external waterpump will be driven off the accessory belt =058.
So. When tensioning the belt. If your verfied timing marks havent moved. You install the belt. And thus begin tensioning. If the cam moves slightly during tensioning. Go look at how to properly time your 1.8t, then come back here. You won't always be able to reference the timing marks on the old belt, eg it broke! Thus you should learn how to set up your timing from scratch starting with how to set your engine to TDC, etc, etc, etc....

it.s a lil bit funny because the camshaft gear it..s moving when u aply tension on the tensioner pulley , this is wrong .. because there is a pin between camshaft gear and camshaft , if it moves u had a bad timing !

Mine (2000 Beetle 1.8T) did the same thing. The timing belt kit I installed was 3 months old (bought from www.ecstuning.com/) and the tensioner failed. Research, after the fact, shows ECS has a history of the same problem. Replaced the tensioner (10 minute job but another 4 hours and a pain in the ass to get to), and now works fine.

if i have that much flex in the belt at high revs the belt just flapps about. it needs to be tighter. 45 degree flex is ideal

this belt will be loose after couple months and than will be too much play

If it does not line up when tight you are one tooth off to start with.
i guess i have a hydraulic tensioner?! 1.8t agu
thats for your cams. not related to this portion of timing. this is bottom to the top end. hydraulic tensioner keeps the cams in time.
