  • I'm always looking for beautifully simple crochet stitch patterns and I think this might be my favourite! Possibly the most beautifully simple blanket I've made! It's a 2 row repeat which is ideal for absolute beginners too.
I've been asked many times if the 'Mix It Up' Granny Squares can be done in rows instead and the answer is YES! Here it is! A mix of traditional and 'solid' rows. Absolutely stunning!
You can use ANY yarn and just use whatever hook size your chosen yarn recommends. For the tutorial I am using Mandala Baby and a 4.5mm hook. My example piece at the start was made using yarn from Poundland (a U.K. shop) and a 4.5mm hook.

Thank you so much for the pattern and tutorial for this beautiful pattern!! I love the way you start a new row, instead of chaining one or two or three! I’m going to remember that! It looks much neater doing it the way you showed! Thanks again!

I can't wait to try this, I have an afghan my great grandmother made which was passed down to me, I could never figure out what the stitches are exactly -- very solid, but also attractive -- this pattern has such nice even sides and looks beautiful with the granny clusters.
I have to choose some beautiful yarn and make this blanket next 💜

You did such a great job with this! What a beautiful project! The edges are perfect! I especially love the method you use instead of chaining up at the beginning of a row! Genius! Thank you!

This is such a wonderful stitch combo. I have started a blanket with Red Heart super Saver in turquoise ombre. It's going to be so pretty. I like this because it has texture but not bulky and lays flat and the spaces between the granny stitches are not very large, I think because the double crochet (us) holds it together nicely and gives it just enough drape. Thank you

It depends what size blanket you want to make, and what weight yarn you’re planning to use… for example I used 4 balls of this dk for my baby blanket and then 1 further ball for a border 🌸

The one thing about using the stacked single crochet (dc) at the beginning is that the very last place to put a stitch (in the row above) is not easy to see. After finishing that first stacked stitch, put a stitch marker in the first chain behind the hook. It will seem like it is just part of the side of the stacked stitch, but it is where your last stitch goes when you come back across. Hope that wasn't too confusing. I use this a lot and have made all the mistakes 😂

I would think so Jane! Although sometimes that type of yarn variegation works best with ‘shorter’ stitches that look a little more like knitting… That being said, one of my favourite blankets I’ve ever made was using that yarn and doing treble stitches - so I guess it’s just try and see! 🌸🥰
