Hi James!!! Thank you for the pruners!! If you could autograph them that would be GREAT!!😍🤗 I have cloned fig trees by the "air layer" method. Those, you do in the spring, when the plant is coming out of its dormant stage. Its rooted while still on the tree, and cut off after you see roots developed. Thank you again for the shears!!😍
Maybe your recommendations are the best fro NJ. But in TX, I usually cut only 3-4 inch branch tips, and they propagate like gangbusters! Often longer tips are unduly stressed by the quick Spring heating up of the temperatures here.
I used to live in Woodbridge and Edison,NJ but I was born in Perth Amboy, NJ. My mom used to grow fig trees, before the winter her Portuguese friend would dig a trench, cover the soft tree with burlap, and bend it into the trench and bury it with leaves and soil. In the spring dig it out, and support the tree with tie stakes. Now I live in Puerto Rico. I have 3.5 acre property. I grow passion fruit, bananas, papaya, orange trees, vegetables.
So I don't do all that.... I bend down a beach, cover it with soil (leave the tip sticking out) and place a rock over it to hold it down. Tara, it will root while still attached to the tree. Then just cut off from behind the new roots the next spring. Works everytime. Hope that helps someone.
Definitely different from my region on propagation. We take a large bucket, throw some soil and water and just stick in the sticks. I’m in the south though so plenty of humidity and doesn’t get too cold.
I started our food forest by planting a Sam Houston peach and a mulberry I'd been growing from bareroot in a pot! I watch your videos and learn so much, which I in turn am teaching my grandsons. Tree farming is the gift that keeps on giving! Thanks James!
Hi James, I'm a Jersey girl here! I've been binge-watching your awesome videos. You've got me all pumped up for Spring. I just found your channel a few days ago. I hope you're doing okay and will come back with more stuff soon!
I hope your not quitting youtube james. I just discovered your channel and you inspired me to start my own garden. Hope you keep making videos because I learn more and more from them.
He asked if I was a Christian; I said, "you tell me." You're a good egg, James. I've been watching about a year; your passion is contagious. Like you, I now have an obsession with buying plants. I just purchased $300 more because I just can't wait until spring here in 4B. Thank-you for the encouragement in propagation.
James, Cheers from central NC. New subscriber here and I absolutely LOVE your channel! I am binge watching your older videos and gonna be rocking my Food Forest tee proudly when it comes. I am so glad you are able to spread this message and teach people around the world how to grow their own food. You are so right, anyone can do this. People tell me all the time that they want to garden and "just don't know how." If I can do it, anyone can. I am nurse with no formal training in gardening or horticulture whatsoever. I started six years ago with a few pots on my patio and have been steadily expanding ever since. I now have a green house and a 2000 sq ft garden plus ten fruit trees. ❤❤❤❤❤❤Love seeing Tuck in your videos. He just has so much personality ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Just found your channel on rooting fig cutting and really enjoyed your “How it all began” video. Thank you for sharing. It’s very inspirational. I’m getting ready to root some fig cuttings and will try your method. Keep my fingers crossed that they will root. Have a wonderful day 😊
Dude I have two fig trees, but I don't know what they're called. They're both ancient! One grows over a spring and throws out honey flavoured light coloured figs the size of pears. The lorikeets love them, so I let them be so I can have the other tree to myself. This tree is MASSIVE!! Again, greenish coloured figs, but man such a dark sticky inside with strawberry-raspberry jam flavoured goodness. These are my favourites, but I have three types of pest, brown rats, possums, and my mates!! This is the tree I'm going to take cuttings from this coming winter, so thanks for a great video! Wish I could share photos with you of these trees, their fruit, and the lorikeets lol
I always wanted to plant a fig - my father (total Italian) could not grow them in this weather - so never gave it a thought - now, definitely going to give it a try. Tuck, oh my Tuck, makes my day, makes me smile, love that little guy and the way he attacked that bok choy!!! hahaha. We are going to have warm weather for about a week - ok warm in the 40's - rephrase, warm weather for us - maybe another video?! There are a lot of commercials in your video, don't care, still hang in there. Are you writing a book about the knowledge you have - you make it a lot easier (definitely in a good way). Thanks for being you. Yes to the giveaways.
I really enjoy this content- super clear and consistent: I hate long winded people, who don’t deliver the point- good stuff- and cute doggie boy :) Thanks for the great info
You should try growing Chicago Hardy figs in NJ. It may be the most productive variety with the biggest crop, and it does well in cold weather. Delicious, too.
My Croatian grandfather had a fig tree in his yard in Jersey City, NJ. He’s long gone but I have a Croatian friend who has trees from there and I can get some cuttings from him. Thank you so much for showing me how to do it!
2 cup method. Red cup on the outside...clear cup with a few holes in them to sit inside the red cups so I can see any root growth. Awesome. Did cuttings 1st week in Feb, and just a few days ago, i noticed two of them had a lot of white roots, so I up potted them into 4x4 pots and now under the lights. Yehh, first timer here and i am so happy for the two. Theres more, so I shall wait and see. These are Desert King variety, great for lower mainland Vancouver BC climate. Cheers
Thank you for also showing us the outcome. Lots of videos out there telling us “How To” but never showing results, so it’s hard to know what actually works beyond hearsay! This was so helpful!
Kudos to you James... Your content is great and your videography is Spot On! Your intro and how you moved through the garden - viewing you through the branches, your chosen backgrounds... Fantastic! 'Love learning from you and your approach is so welcoming; 'find myself "jumping" on each new released video. Awesome Job James... and yes, I love Tuck as well. 'Had 3 Yorkies - great breed, wonderful buddies. All the best to you!
James, I tried twice to root a fig tree without success. I'm in N.J.6B. After watching your video I will try once more. Hopefully 3x is the magic number LOL. You also being in N.J. gives me hope.
hi,,I'm from the Philippines but I do enjoy watching ur videos and they are very informative and entertaining as well...thank u and more power..i hope to have a garden like yours...thank u also for inspiring me...
James dont worry about the rooting hormone coming off... as you force the stick in, the hormone will come off, but it will works its way up the stick that may not have any on it. Even with powder, this is all good stuff. The dipped portion is never going to be lose all the hormone by doing this. I am not sure where this notion came from, but it is very common misconception in the hobby.
James, I have a 3 fig trees I am pruning and have been taking care of for going on 2 years. I have made preserves this year and have been preparing to make this tree produce 5x it produced last year. So far from the better of the 3 I've received up to 1 quart from the one tree in one after noon of harvest. I've said this to say if you would like some preserves or some cuttings this winter, reach out to me and I'll gladly share them With you. Brunswick is the Fig variety I have. Thank you and I'll be attempting the knowledge from this video.
Hello my name is Nina I truly enjoyed how you demonstrated the Fed cutting I have a cutting of a fig tree from my fathers that I truly truly want to grow figs My father passed away on Christmas of 2020 It is so important that I get some type of figs from the street Thank you again so much
I had the sound off and captions on - all of a sudden the hand movements and words synced up to a beastie boys song playing in the other room. I wish I could repeat what just happened - it was awsome
A few years ago, I decided to try using pallets to create a grow bed. I do not have most of those tools and trying to get the nails out 🤦🏽♀️!!! I used my dad's handsaw and decided it would take too long. You were able to build the bed I want. Niiiiice!
so James, I only have an area about 12 x 8, and I am putting in several things. If I list them here, can you tell me if anything shouldn't go next to something else??? I love how you mix them together to help each other... so heres my general idea. Stinging nettles, (a true super food) and borage, plus some lovely rhubarb I've had for years, are along the side of the house. Then I plan to put in half rows of bokchoy, chard ,mustard greens, and dandilions, lol, I know, but they are a super food. Then I will put a small fence up for the cherry tomatoes, tomatoes and cucumbers. and then in front of and below those will be garlic, leeks, beets and spinach. I would appreciate any help you can give. Unfort. I can't do any more trees, or my landlord will evict me. lol tc and thanks for all your hard work and videos. I love them all. And a big heart for Tuck! a true garden gnome! haha :)
Love this video! Very informative and easy to understand! I just got into growing fig trees and this video taught me all I needed to know! Your dog is so cute eating that bok choy! LoL
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I’m going to take some cuttings from my dads big fig tree. Love your little baby Tuck! I had an Emma almost identical to Tuck for 14 years. She crossed the rainbow 🌈 bridge January 6th. I really miss her. Thanks again. 💞🙋🏻♀️🙏🏼
Hi James and Tuck, I did your seed saving for tomatoes, I purchased an heirloom tomato and followed your video last fall, stored the seeds in the refrigerator until 8 days ago when I put 5 seeds in worm castings “ home made “ and 5 seeds in a moist paper towel to see if they will sprout, well both ways were successful Thanks I’m going to have some great tomatoes this summer. Love your videos and give Tuck a❤️ & 🥒
Thank you! I have been wanting to try propagating an old apple tree. I am not that successful but keep trying. Today I learned something new. Now maybe it will work.
James, this was the best video, I followed your instructions and my Grandson and I potted 10 Fig cuttings yesterday and we are keeping them inside under lights and 65 degrees in the basement. I have nothing to lose as you stated. Thanks for making this video!!!
This is right on time. I live in Las Vegas and just came from a cutting party yesterday. I have a black mission at home about 4 years old. Your info about tip pruning is gold!
You’re welcome my friend! Good stuff. Tuck says hi back, and sends his love. Thanks for grabbing some mercy too, me and Tuck are glad you like the shirt 😁❤️🐕
Hello, I took some cuttings when I was moving last month. I put them in the plastic bag on the refrigerator like you said and they have started getting little white roots. so pumped.
Thank you for consistently putting out such great content. I have been following your channel for quite a while and have been inspired to create my own content and garden with a personal twist. Keep up the great work
I grafted my fig tree from my mother's 40-year-old fig tree. Mine is beautiful and now that it's shoulder hi, I think it's 3 years old now, I think I could graft it, but it's June now, and there's fruit on the tree so I'm guessing it's a bad time of year to try to do anything like that. I've learned a lot from your video. ❤ I shared this video on pinterest, I hope it helps your channel.
Thanks for the how to, my neighbor has a fig tree that yields fruit and made a fig tort which was amazing. I had no idea a fig tree would thrive in Virginia, but I will give your method a try.
Hello, jersey girl here I’m going to try your method. I have a beautiful fig tree I planted about 4 years ago and I’ve been trying to root from clippings but no success. I’m moving from jersey to another state so I want to take some clippings with me. Thanks for your videos, I look forward to learning more 😊 ❤for tuck
Wow! This is a great topic! A friend just gave me a fig sapling, not that big, may be just below my knee. If cutting is OK, I may want to do the cutting. I am from Malaysia. Fig is now trendy in Malaysia, like grape once was. Everybody wants to grow fig in Malaysia, many are already doing so.Malaysians kind of think fig as an exotic temperate crop but able to grow in Malaysian tropical climate.
my father carried a branch on the plane from greece now we have 5 giant fig trees in NY and NJ i been wanting to cultivate some of it and make more so this video was really helpful!
Awesome!!! I just planted two fig trees here in NC and will definitely clone !!! I love figs!!!! Thanks for always providing such great info!!!! You and Tuck are the best!!!!!
I started propagating my figs by cuttings last year. This year I bought cuttings for at least 12 different varieties and will start them this weekend. I think I went a little overboard, but, you can always give extra plants away to friends. There's only a few that'll survive zone 6b (i.e. hardy chicago), so most of mine will stay in pots (they go dormant and then hang out in the garage). It's pretty easy to become a fig-fanatic ;)
I am new to watching your channel and am new to gardening! I have already learned so much from your videos and truly appreciate your insight so much! I can't wait to really start my garden, eventually turning it into a food forest! I have two areas on our 5 acre property in OK (zone 7a). One in the back with 4 different pear trees, a black and red cherry tree, 2 peach trees, 5 Japanese Loquats, 2 different apple trees, and 2 Persimmon trees. In the front in an old coral is where I'll be doing my garden. My question is, how often and how heavily do you water your food forest, now that it's established with the multiple layers and heavy layer of wood chips?
James ty so much for all your encouragement & advice. I sure hope I can do this, I live in Maine, my sister from RI just sent me a big branch from her fig tree, I'm very excited to try maybe a few methods you suggested as the branch has like 7 little extensions. Also wanted to let you know I put up hoop house following your instructions & I'll be damned, it's 11/15/22 & I have celery & actually just planted kale I just noticed I've got starts. That's with only 1 hoop house in plastic, gonna get the plastic over to 2nd hoop house this weekend. This is the best I'm so happy. 😀😀😀
Never found a problem with taking fig cuttings. One of the easy ones. Just cut a short length of vigorous twig and stick it in a pot and keep it moist. I don’t bother to cut the tip off. Rub the lower buds off that would be below ground otherwise they come up as suckers. Only trouble I find is you end up with too many new plants. At least they can be passed into others. Must admit I like propagating stuff. Got piles of olive plants of various sizes as well.
Brown turkey fig trees make great rootstocks. So another way to go would be to propagate more, and eventually graft other varieties onto them. Hmmm…maybe not in New Jersey, come to think of it, because a very cold winter could knock your trees back to the ground, in which case you’d lose your grafts. You know best for your climate!
I just love watching you in your garden. I have learned so much from watching your videos. A question I have that is always a problem for me is the little creatures that like to dig up everything I plant. Love the little guys but they are driving me crazy. Planted thirty tulip bulbs one fall and in the spring I found nothing but holes where I planted. Found them later all over the yard, and in between bushes. HELP
Someone just gave me a bunch of cuttings of Corkys honey delight and violette de Bordeaux. Thank you for a great video on how to get them growing roots.
Hey James, hope you are going to post soon, I miss all the enthusiasm that you have in abundance and of course our little Tuck...hope all is well and that we are going to hear very soon...greetings from Australia
Thanks for all of the great informations. New subscriber here. I love gardening, have a “green thumb” as well, but at the moment I’m working overseas, I’ll make sure when I’m back in California , I’ll be back with my gardening. I’ve started my vegetable garden in the Philippines when I went on vacation last month, and I’ve asked my brothers to continue and nurture my plants. I love Tuckmeister too, and I have a miniature schnauzer as BIG as him 😂, very playful and follows wherever you go. Keep up the good work....continue sharing knowledge and inspiring.

So I don't do all that.... I bend down a beach, cover it with soil (leave the tip sticking out) and place a rock over it to hold it down. Tara, it will root while still attached to the tree. Then just cut off from behind the new roots the next spring. Works everytime. Hope that helps someone.
Dude your channel is money. My Sweet B will have so many fig trees know - one of her favorites.
I'm in South Jersey so I'm invested in your content my 2nd year fig fruited this year and this is exactly the video I needed, thanks bro
Definitely different from my region on propagation. We take a large bucket, throw some soil and water and just stick in the sticks. I’m in the south though so plenty of humidity and doesn’t get too cold.
I hope you guys are enjoying a nice break and that you and Tuck are okay!
So happy your doing a video on Fig trees! I've been wondering about them for a while...thanks!

Looks Great and You can enjoy Your own Garden`s delicates!
Hey you guys !!!
I can see you guys are all ready for the next planting session, specifically beautiful Tuck.
Blessings from: California you too.♡
Hi James: really good video. You helped me because I followed your methods and now I have 8 little fig trees. I will send you pictures later ;))
Awesome!!! I just planted two fig trees here in NC and will definitely clone !!! I love figs!!!! Thanks for always providing such great info!!!! You and Tuck are the best!!!!!
Really enjoy your channel there James! Lots of good information and your enthusiasm!
Tuck, you are so cute, I just hope that Leon loves veggies like you. I love watching both of you ❤️
Thank you for the fig propagation tips I am hoping receive a few free cuttings. Seems simple enough.
Thankyou, I tried to watch three other fig growers and your video is the best!🌱🌿🌳♥️
HELP
Dude, I live in Northern VA, have a giant fig bush in my yard, and have had a number of requests for cuttings off of this magical plant.
The number one point that really struck me is… wait weeks or a month! I had no idea that my expectations were so far off. Thanks, that really helps!
I never thought about rooting my fig tree!! Thank you!!
Someone just gave me a bunch of cuttings of Corkys honey delight and violette de Bordeaux. Thank you for a great video on how to get them growing roots.
I enjoy the way you teach! Give tuck kisses from me!!
Thanks for all the great information. Love your videos.
Hey James, hope you are going to post soon, I miss all the enthusiasm that you have in abundance and of course our little Tuck...hope all is well and that we are going to hear very soon...greetings from Australia
I love your energy at the beginning of the video😂😆🙌
Thanks for all of the great informations. New subscriber here. I love gardening, have a “green thumb” as well, but at the moment I’m working overseas, I’ll make sure when I’m back in California , I’ll be back with my gardening. I’ve started my vegetable garden in the Philippines when I went on vacation last month, and I’ve asked my brothers to continue and nurture my plants.
I love Tuckmeister too, and I have a miniature schnauzer as BIG as him 😂, very playful and follows wherever you go.
Keep up the good work....continue sharing knowledge and inspiring.
🙏😁❤️
