Predators, called the Yautja, naturally seen in infrared. This allows them to see heat very well in general so in the hot climate of the jungle his natural vision made it difficult to distinguish between Dutch and the ambient heat of the environment. This is why predators use their biomasks, the mask helps to filter out the ambient heat of the climate and colors it blue, making the prey stand out more and further enhancing the predators vision.
Watching from the villain's perspective is a great way of keeping suspense instead of just plastering it out there what they're dealing with. This way we kinda discover at the same rate as the protagonist. Young people really need to learn some patience. And this might be coming from a 41 year old, but I understood this at 10 / 11 years of age. When I was first allowed to see this movie.
"GET TO THE CHOPPA!" Someone had to say it...Jean-Claude Van Damme was supposed to be the Predator. P.S. Arnold IS the action hero. Literally the Last Action Hero
A bit of trivia, the guy who worked on the creature effects, Stan Winston, was flying with James Cameron when designing the Predator face, and James suggested that it should have the mandibles. Here ya go
When the predator shot Dutch, the blaster bolt hit his rifle. It destroyed the weapon, and knocked Dutch down and stunned him for a minute, but that's why he didn't die.
The anxiety you felt is how the director conveys the anxiousness of the team. This movie is CLASSIC 80s pre-CGI, sci-fi horror action. Please watch Predator 2 next; it’s SEVERELY underrated. The cast is phenomenal.
15:25 The Predator has a motive. The same motive all people have when they go on a hunting trip for fun which is something countless people do every day on this planet - murdering animals for sport. 22:25 Yes he hunts humans - but not everyone, only humans who are worth the hunt. Which means armed and trained men are the most fun for it.
I'm glad you decided to checkout this movie. I do recommend watching number 2. You get a clue for the prequel that comes out in August called (prey). Since you have seen alien. You could jump into alien vs predator. The predators infrared POV is a lot better. If you feel up for it you could check out Predators. Other Arnie movies I would recommend is True Lies, last action hero and End of Days
I love how reactors refer to special effects as graphics. A product of the digital age. But this movie was made before computer imaging. Love your reactions as always, and your cat is as cool as they come.
Definitely one of Arnie’s best films and an absolute nightmare to make. One of these guys was such a terror, he needed armed security with him 24/7 to keep the rest of the crew safe. (Sigh) The good ol’ days.
@@christophwyss2014 Sonny Landham, yep. I still remember director McTiernan's statement about it - "They weren't there to protect Sonny Landham from other people, they were there to protect other people from Sonny Landham."
Fun fact: Two of these actors later became governors of American states. If you don't know guess which ones. Also if we are recommending movies I recommend "The Accountant" a different kind of action movie with Ben Affleck or the Temple Grandin Story if you are up for a biography.
I remember this being a HUGE SPECTACLE when it came out!!!This was a True Blockbuster!!!All the showings on Friday night were SOLD OUT!!Tons of people in the parking lot and outside the theater talking about it.There was Excitement in the Air almost!!!Lines to get in were around the building!!It was great!!!
AVP is a movie you watch at a party, with your friends, when alcohol is involved. Other than that, yeah... it is pretty mediocre... But it's a great watch when you're plastered, I gotta say!
"I've never seen a stronger man than Arnie" Well, he didn't win Mr Universe and Mr Olympia for nothing! It sure wasn't for his "pretty face", lol. Schwarzenegger, dubbed "the Austrian Oak", began lifting weights at the age of 15 and went on to win the Mr Universe title at age 20, subsequently winning the Mr Olympia contest seven times. He remains a prominent figure in bodybuilding, and has written many books and articles on it.
Of course the saying "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" exists for a reason, but Arnold's face is not unpleasant to look at. Some people are difficult to look at, lack of symmetry, etc.
@@w1975b This is true. Also, Arnie, even at his largest, was nowhere near the monsters we now see in the bodybuilding world. Aesthetics seems to have taken second place to sheer bulk. I think Arnie hit the peak size. He beat bigger guys, stronger guys. In his pomp, his proportions were exceptional. I don't think I've seen better, before or since. GOAT bodybuilder to my mind.
33:59 Right when she says "it's scary to see just his eyes in the darkness", the neon cherries in the background were each perfectly ringing one of Arnie's eyes.
The same parallel can be drawn with Alien to Aliens going from a suspense film to action oriented. Going from Predator to Predator 2 is a similar feeling. The 2nd film gives a little more lore about Predators as well.
Best predator movie ever, and one of "Arnie's" greatest performance in a classic movie. Also, the first Terminator is also another legendary Arnie movie!
The yautja initiate (predator) shot at Dylan while aiming and took his arm off. When he shot plasma at Dutch, he hit the gun, which shattered. You can see shrapnel embedded in Dutch's chest. It was a no scope flick shot, a really good one at that. Arnie is Arnie, and sure, he has plot armor, but Dutch is not invincible. He just a total badass!!😎
The “old movie thing” of not showing the antagonist is way more effective than modern films, it’s what you don’t see, knowing something is there that is truly terrifying!
Arnie's quote from Terminator:"I'll Be Back!" His quote from Predator:"GET TO 'DA CHOPPER!" Little known fact but the predator was originally going to be a more hands-on fighter played by Van Damme, but when he found out his face wouldn't be shown he backed out
The invisibility effect was achieved by having someone wearing a bright red suit (because it was the opposite colors of the green of the jungle and the blue of the sky) the size of the Predator. The red was removed with chroma key techniques, leaving an empty area. Fun Fact: Jean-Claude Van Damme was originally going to be the Predator but then turned it down when he heard that his face wouldn’t be seen and that’s when Kevin Peter Hall decided to do the role.
I had to laugh coz when she said- ""I think it maybe an animal or a (Alien) maybe??""🤣 predator got dropped off to earth in a space ship in the beginning..yes a alien!🙄

He's an alien, so humans are sport the way that animals are sport to many humans. I think that's what Elton John was singing about in "The Circle of Life". 🙃
The first time you watch Predator is super anxious inducing, but the subsequent times you watch for the details of how he behaves and hunts and you put yourself more in the Predator's pov and it's a whole new experience.
I don't understand why many reactors think that Arnold got shot in the arm. I first saw the movie when I was under 10 years old and remember thinking that luckily the Predator missed his arm on accident or purposely aimed at his weapon, but it is super clear that the weapon got the shot. Nothing of the flesh can survive a direct plasma shot anyway, we were shown that 3 times before.
If you watch closely, you’ll see that the Predator actually shoots Arnold’s gun, not his arm. The gun takes the majority of the impact from the Predator’s blast.
Another Arnold film that I just rewatched for the first time since the early 2000s that I find very underrated and very enjoyable is "End of Days". The critics were not kind to it when it came out but I think it's very good.
That’s a great movie I just watched that one for the first time very recently. It was directed by Peter Hyams who directed Time Cop (1994), Sudden Death (1995), and The Relic (1997) which are great underrated movies. Peter Hyams is the most underrated movie director.
You can thank Stan Winston studios for the amazing predator design. My most favorite design ever. And also thank the amazing Alan Silvestri for the music. Epic move. Glad you liked it.
The weapon that the Yautja fired is called a plasma caster... It's linked into his visor. When the Yautja focuses on an object the caster will triangulate the target forming a reticle 🔼 everything within the center of the reticle will be eliminated... The energy projectile itself can be controlled by the Yautja.... So if he wanted to he could just burn a target or completely EXPLODE the target.
My experience with this movie in the theater was unique because I hadn't seen any trailers AND I missed the opening sequence with the spaceship. So all I knew was a bunch of soldiers went on a mission in the jungle. Had NO IDEA what was hunting them would be an alien. Kinda makes me wish they cut that opening shot lol
Mary: "What kind of weapon... What kind of weapon can do that?!?" Predator: It was just a melon baller, Mary. You've got one in your kitchen draw, well, you HAD one in your kitchen drawer.
There's been a sharp increase in YT Predator content lately and I'm lovin' it. Saw this when I was 9. The commercials didn't give too much away. What's that, a spaceship? Ooh yeah!
The mask doesn’t just enhance the Predator’s thermal vision, it is also used to help him breathe hence the gas spouting out when he disconnected the hoses. The Predators can somewhat breathe our atmosphere but in another movie one of the Predators has to use a backup smaller mask to occasionally breathe into.
If you’re referring to Predator 2, I have a theory on why the Predator uses a smaller mask. It’s in Los Angeles in the 90’s, the air quality there is lousy. Whereas in the first movie they’re in the jungle, fresh air.
I can only say that Mac may well have been reminding himself what king Hal once said, "We happy few, we band of brothers..." That is the relationship amongst soldiers.
oh, these younglings soo easily scared, and with LOTS of anxiety issues..... I was expecting her to hyperventilate and panic on Mac's trap. At least she is adorable....
Are you saying Shane Black wrote part of Predator? From what I heard, he was hired as an actor and that was what he wanted, but when the studio wanted him to change the story/script he said no and at that point the studio decided to kill him off.
He wrote the new predator that came out. He wrote lethal weapon which is awesome btw and became series but I'm sure he was uncredited in Arnie's predator but contributed. Lethal weapon is a fav of mine and then 2018 The Predator with it's star cast. I think he may be involved in new predator movie with Arnold and Danny glover from predator 2. 🙏🙏🙏
18:04 You are right Mary, the camaraderie that exists between soldiers is called love between men, those guys go through so much together (good stuff, bad stuff and especially extreme stuff) that the bond that is forged between them in some cases is stronger even to the one between parents and sons, or between brothers, and definitely superior than the one between regular friends
The only lore you need to know to continue was told in this movie. They come when it’s exceptionally hot. They hunt capable, armed people. They hunt for sport and trophies. And they’re the coolest aliens on film. 😉
The only thing you need to know about the "Aliens vs Predator" movies are that they are nowhere near as good as each franchise's separate standalone movies.
This movie is a classic as well as the second and Predators movie, you can watch the other stuff I guess, they're fine not the same quality as the aforementioned movies though
I wonder why that quote was so ....quotable "get to the chopper!" I don't get it, is it his accent, the scene. I don't know but this is one hell of a movie.
I was lucky enough to visit the filming location for the Predator back in 2015. It's now a zip-line tourist attraction just outside of Puerto Vallarta. The enemy base camp seen at 8:33 is now a restaurant. They even have a life-sized statue of the Predator there!
The predator is no more of a psychopath than a human that hunts for sport, although is this case we’re the game. I guess the predator has no den to hang the heads.
The point of the mask is to filter out ambient heat in the jungle which was why it was easy to see the soldiers' body heat earlier in the movie.. When the predator takes off the mask everything looks pretty much the same temperature which is why its all red.

Predator 2 is also worth watching, even if Arnold isn't in it!
Underrated too but indeed worth it.
Great sequel - really adds to the Predator mythology/lore and hunter's code.
@Garrie AvP was better than Aliens 3, imo. But both are not great in respect to both their franchises.
I liked P2 better :D

Intriguing.
I maintain this as the best movie ever made. Action turned survival/horror perfection
100% agree . Annie wanted the other characters to get some great lines/ moments too. Totally adds to the movie.
Yeah. Suspense, the feeling of being watched.
Right?Danny Glover.Bill Paxton.Garey Busey.Nuff Said.
"I've never seen a stronger man than Arnie"
Well, he didn't win Mr Universe and Mr Olympia for nothing!
"I'm gonna have me sum fun" "I'm gonna have me sum fun"
I mean… the Predator Hunting Humans and taking their Skulls is kind of what some People do at hunting with Lions and Leopards etc.

@@syn420951 when it comes to martial artist actors doing their own stunts nobody does it better than Jackie Chan,Donnie Lee and Tony Jaa
Plus, wearing a neoprene bodysuit in Mexico summer heat would not be very appealing.
Plus the Predator is supposed to be imposing, if Van Damme played the role Arnie would have towered over the Predator.
Van Damme is a good actor though. Jean Claud Van Johnson was hilarious and deep.
The sequel assumes you already know what the creature is so focuses more on action. You shouldn’t be so stressed out and anxious watching it!

Ain’t got time to bleed. Definitely one of the best lines in Sci-Fi cinema

@@B0mber44 Or it's about moist air vs dry air.
Here's another theory you may not have considered, perhaps the gas from the hoses was used to cool the thermal equipment he was using.

One of the writers is Shane black, the soldier telling the jokes 🤣
Are you saying Shane Black wrote part of Predator? From what I heard, he was hired as an actor and that was what he wanted, but when the studio wanted him to change the story/script he said no and at that point the studio decided to kill him off.
He wrote the new predator that came out. He wrote lethal weapon which is awesome btw and became series but I'm sure he was uncredited in Arnie's predator but contributed. Lethal weapon is a fav of mine and then 2018 The Predator with it's star cast. I think he may be involved in new predator movie with Arnold and Danny glover from predator 2. 🙏🙏🙏
Yes Mary he does do it partly for food but mostly for the trophy of the skull he’s an offworld hunter on safari and he is no vegetarian.
you're completely right about the writer's obsession with big psy's. i mean, just look at the predators face when it takes its mask off!
It's not the writers obsession lol! Two jokes, and the predator concept came from Cameron....so what are you on about?
@ big pssiez!!!
Yeah, the location of AvP looked scorching hot.
The only thing you need to know about the "Aliens vs Predator" movies are that they are nowhere near as good as each franchise's separate standalone movies.

I was lucky enough to visit the filming location for the Predator back in 2015. It's now a zip-line tourist attraction just outside of Puerto Vallarta. The enemy base camp seen at 8:33 is now a restaurant. They even have a life-sized statue of the Predator there!
Well they say there's a statue - it's really just an empty plinth with some green goo on it. 😉
The predator is no more of a psychopath than a human that hunts for sport, although is this case we’re the game. I guess the predator has no den to hang the heads.
Until it gets back to its ship.
And he only hunts the most dangerous game==there's always a possibility that the prey can kill him. But that's part of the challenge.
The second Predator is definitely different, and since you know what they are it's a bit less anxiety inducing, but it's super intense as well!
Hey mary… magic maggy also watching it right now… are you both planning it together? 😂

The point of the mask is to filter out ambient heat in the jungle which was why it was easy to see the soldiers' body heat earlier in the movie.. When the predator takes off the mask everything looks pretty much the same temperature which is why its all red.
