Time to find out if Bill Murray's classic deadpan delivery of the "dickless" joke packs as much of a humorous punch for a new viewer now as it did back when I first saw it.
The best part about Venkman's negative reinforcement electroshock session is that he actually starts getting a correct result from the guy and still doesn't care about the work itself. When Egon gets upset at the EPA guy and swears at him and tries to attack him, it carries more weight because its Egon, the logical, calculated one. It's a great moment. Love the 'Get Her' callback. Ray says it in the library at the start and Venkman says it back at him in the Gozer confrontation. Whole movie is great really. Those are just the moments that amused me this time round.
To answer one of your questions, from IMdB: "In parapsychology, there is some correlation between menstrual cycles and latent telekinetic powers. From a psychological standpoint, Alice may have been going through menopause, which in very rare cases can cause psychotic breaks or blackouts. Peter was trying to determine if Alice might have actually caused the disturbance herself, either physically or through psychic powers."
Since she’s doing horrors, and she watched them on the past, I thought Mary might draw a thread between Sigourney Weaver as Dana in Ghostbusters and Ripley in Alien
“ what is this blob can somebody tell me?!” The ghost of John Belushi. Bill Murray‘s role was originally written for Belushi and he died right before production so they threw in a ghost that was an alcoholic food-obsessed monster as a direct reference to Belushi‘s performance in animal house.
@@sspdirect02 Yup. Dan Aykroyd was actually writing Belushi’s lines in the screenplay at the moment he got the call about his death. Supposedly Bill Murray improvised all his dialogue when he took over the role since the original versions of the lines were specifically for John.
“What is this green blob, can anyone tell me?” Yes, it’s your classic, focused, non-terminal repeating phantasm, otherwise known as a Class 5 Full Roaming Vapor, a real nasty one! ;)
The green blob is Slimer, in both versions of the animated series he becomes a sort of "pet" for the Ghostbusters. He's an homage to the late John Belushi who was going to be in this movie as the Peter Venkman character but he passed 2 years before the release so Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis re-wrote the character for Bill Murray. The original Venkman was, apparently supposed to be kind of a slob, eating and drink excessively but that went to Slimer as part of the homage. Venkman's character became, as you saw, a womanising douche, fitting with rolls Bill Murray is more used to playing.
Rick Moranis's performance is so fantastic in both Ghostbuster movies, it's honestly shocking how little some of his lines are as popular as some of the main cast. That entire tracking shot of him at his party just lamely circling the room giving mundane financial advice is hilarious. And the subtle scene stealing he pulls off when the Protection grid is being shut down. Watch that back, he's just there, slightly off centre shot cartoonishly mimicking everyone around him as it's what Vince would be doing in said scene. Such a good actor.
One of my favorite parts in the movie is when a joyous Ray pulls up in an old clunker and says "Everybody can relax I found the car!". He then lists off all it's problems & how it basically needs about $10,000 of work done to it. Peter asks him "how much" the car was, and Ray says "Only $4,800" (about $13,000 today). The face Peter makes after hearing that is absolutely hilarious. Ray could have bought a brand new car for that price. 😂
The third one isn't a sequel, it's an unrelated reboot. The one they're working on right now is supposed to be a direct continuation. One of the things that ended up on the cutting room floor in THIS movie is that Winston (the new guy) was an ex navy seal. There was going to be a running joke about him being the only effective one in the field while the others remain just as sloppy as they were at the hotel.
one really cool detail is the comics did a spider verse style crossover of the various franchises and had a lot of fun with the context, even addding some really cool touches to the player POV character from the videogame.

This was a fun movie to see when it came out. My Mom, myself and one of my sister's went to see it together. The whole theater was laughing and enjoying it. I'm sure Sigourney Weaver had fun doing it, she told the director that she wanted to turn into one of the Demon Dogs lol.
@@redrick8900 the opening sequence of the woman terrorized by the librarian ghost. The eggs cooking on Dana's counter. Dana's abduction. Louis being chased. Yes it is.
Fun fact Slimer, the green blob, is supposed to be John Belushi who was originally going to be Peter Veikman. Unfortunately he passed away before filming so Dan Aykroyd, who was a good friend of Belushi, put Slimer in the movie as a tribute.
The only thing that I can tell you about that that green blob of a ghost is that his name is "Slimer" and in the Ghostbusters cartoon (back in the 80's) Slimer kinda becomes their mascot of sorts and he basically lives with them in the old firehouse.
Technically he doesn't get named "Slimmer" UNTIL AFTER the first episode of the 80's cartoon "The Real Ghostbusters" which was named that because of the OTHER "Ghostbusters" cartoon that came out before the movie based cartoon came out! 😉😉😁😁
And back in the 70's, there was a live-action kids' series called The Ghostbusters. It had nothing to do with this movie, but I can't help but think this movie was at least a bit inspired by the concept.
Totally agreed about the 80's hair and styles, Sigourney Weaver looked so amazing as Dana. Also, seeing this again, there's a lot of things I can't believe my mom would have (at least knowingly) let me watch, I was 9 years old when it came out on VHS! Also, another similar 80's classic you need to see is Gremlins!
If you want something lighthearted and equally fun for Halloween, try the "Frighteners". Peter Jackson and Michael J. Fox - what else could someone ask for?😊
At the same time you said that Sigorney Weaver character and her neighbour reminded you of the ones in Big Bang theory, I thought the same thing :D And a Fun fact, the Secretary in Ghost Busters plays Sheldons grandmother in Young Sheldon.
I've had the epic pleasure of meeting Bill Bryan, the man that built and wore the Stay Puft man suit in the movie. Fun fact he told me was that when you see the Stay Puft the first time walking behind the buildings, he was only wearing the head piece without the rest of the costume. He also told me that my cosplay knife I made looked great which I later got stabbed by Chuck Norris himself with.
My personal second favorite quote from this movie (after "When someone asks you if you're a god, you say YES!") is when Ray says, "I was present at an unexplained undersea mass sponge migration." and Venkman replies, "Ray, the sponges migrated about a foot and a half." LOL
"Egon, this reminds me, of the time you tried to drill a hole through your head, you remember that?" "That would've worked if you hadn't stopped me." You can't find that in any other movie!
So, fun fact, Dan Aakroyd (Ray) actually had Ecto-1 fully kitted out, and he could name every single piece of equipment on or in the car, and what it's function was within canon.
Slimer ( the green blob ) is supposed to represent John Belushi, who was best friend of Dan Akroyd who wrote most of the screenplay. John died not to long before the movie was made.
This does have a sequel if you find the scary movies get too much for you and you need a break. People debate about the quality of it in comparison to the original but I liked it.
Right, and Bill Murray ad-libbed his lines on the spot, which is why Dan Akyroyd only shakes and nods his head in reply, having had no prior time to think of a suitable response.
Two to step in between Ghostbusters and Texas Chainsaw massacre are "Witches of Eastwick" or "Practical Magic". Both are well written, well acted and only medium scary.
My favorite joke in the movie took me a couple times to even notice. When Peter says "Go get her Ray" he is referring back to the first time they saw a ghost and Ray's big idea was "Stay close. Stay close. Now do exactly as I say. Get her!"
19:18 -- on set, the actors who were inside the chair were self conscious about grabbing Sigourney in the "wrong places"... She met with them and said, "you guys are working blind from inside a chair and it's for 30 seconds.... Just make it look good."
You should check out The Hillywood Show's "Supernatural" parodies. There are 2. The first uses the song "Shake it off" and the 2nd uses "Ghostbusters". Both have cameos by the "Supernatural" cast members.
William Atherton / "Walter Peck" --- the EPA guy also played the reporter in "Die Hard" And Die Hard 2." - The jil guard that says the mayor wanted to see the Ghostbusters is Reginald VelJohnson / "Sgt. Al Powell" in "Die Hard" and "Die Hard 2" and was "Gus" the limo driver in "Crocodile Dundee."
Seriously, Ghostbusters 2 (made about 5 years after this one, with all the same cast) Is definitely worth a watch.. don’t let anyone tell you differently . I’ll admit some people might think it’s a little Cornier and not quite as good as this one. But really.. it’s a fun, good time trust me, with even more Rick Moranis 👍.
It absolutely is worth seeing. The story's not as tight and simple, but the jokes are great, every character from the 1st one is back and each one grows, there are hilarious scenes, and just more classic New York 80s culture to soak up. Do it, Mary. You will enjoy it.
The green blob “Slimer” was a sort of mascot for them and worked with the team in the GB cartoons I watched as a kid. He’s not evil or anything, he’s just a nuisance at times.
The actor who played Egon passed away a few years ago and they're going to do another Ghostbusters movie and one of the actors who's going to be in it it's the one kid from stranger things who worth the glasses.
As an obvious comment, I would recommend Alien/Aliens both featuring Sigourney Weaver. Those are some great horror action films. Dickless is for Christmas movies and it's a bit early for that.
Perfect way to start the month of October. Ghostbusters is such a great classic. If you want to check out more Rick Moranis, might I suggest Little Shop of Horrors (fits the theme of the month) and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.
I'm suprised how much PG movies could get away with back in the day. Nowadays, G and PG are the same thing, but in the 80's it actually meant something

P.S.
Ironically the "Key Master" is constantly locking himself out of his own apartment
This was a fun movie to see when it came out. My Mom, myself and one of my sister's went to see it together. The whole theater was laughing and enjoying it. I'm sure Sigourney Weaver had fun doing it, she told the director that she wanted to turn into one of the Demon Dogs lol.
I love the reactions when people first realize this isn't just a comedy...but a HORROR comedy
This isn't remotely horror.
@@redrick8900 the opening sequence of the woman terrorized by the librarian ghost.
The eggs cooking on Dana's counter.
Dana's abduction.
Louis being chased.
Yes it is.
@@sirjedisentinel All played for laughs.
@@redrick8900 No. Those moments are all played for horror
Still one of the greatest comedies ever made; the sequel is worth watching, but the reboot should be ignored
When Mary sees that Chris Hemsworth is in the reboot she will want to watch it. :-)
It'll still be a waste of time.
@@zarquondam, he's treated horribly in that abomination
But Afterlife looks good...
The rebooth is just a cinematic SNL skit
Fun fact Slimer, the green blob, is supposed to be John Belushi who was originally going to be Peter Veikman. Unfortunately he passed away before filming so Dan Aykroyd, who was a good friend of Belushi, put Slimer in the movie as a tribute.
Egon eyebrow raise when he says slim chance they'll survive was another nod to Belushi
24:31 Moranis got his finger up as Peck is talking. I just remembered that. ROFL
True
I remembered watching the real Ghostbusters , an animated series based on these films !
And back in the 70's, there was a live-action kids' series called The Ghostbusters. It had nothing to do with this movie, but I can't help but think this movie was at least a bit inspired by the concept.
CHICKEN EGON!
Fox - what else could someone ask for?😊
an excellent suggestion
Glad you mentioned it! Nobody talks about it!
Such an underrated classic.
👍
Speaking of Michael J Fox, I suggest "Teen Wolf"(not the series) it's pretty good and underrated(might be a cult classic (?)) 😁😁
In the hotel ballroom scene, Slimer guzzling the bottle of alcohol was a tribute to Belushi from a scene from Animal House
As a kid the StayPuft Marshmallow Man blew my mind. Still one of the best reveals in any movie.
Love this movie - saw it at the cinema when it first came out, can barely believe that was 40 years ago!
Wait for the 2021/2022 version of GB to come out and don't watch the 2016 version if you haven't already.
I'm so glad you liked it!!! I saw this in theaters as a kid so it's held a special place in my heart for decades.
What's great about this movie is that all the comics were able to input their own brand of comedy into their character.
At the same time you said that Sigorney Weaver character and her neighbour reminded you of the ones in Big Bang theory, I thought the same thing :D And a Fun fact, the Secretary in Ghost Busters plays Sheldons grandmother in Young Sheldon.
I can't wait to see the new Ghostbusters Afterlife and I'm also excited to see Bill Murray return as well as what's left of the original Ghostbusters.
"I would actually love a pole in my place" Oh! Would you now! lol. 6:17
"He Slimed me!" One of the classic lines in movie history! xD
Mary's deadpan delivery of all those 'procreate' jokes was definitely worthy of such a classic film!
Mary: He's so desperate.
Also Mary: Aww he brought flowers, that's so cute. Olden day men were sweeter.
her love language is probably gifts. XD the easiest and shallowest of love languages.
@@liamnehren1054 Okay misogynist.
@@redrick8900 lol maybe look up the meaning, I would say the same about a man being shallow.
@@liamnehren1054 Keep pretending to laugh to project confidence when you get owned. That's totally working, misogynist.
So, fun fact, Dan Aakroyd (Ray) actually had Ecto-1 fully kitted out, and he could name every single piece of equipment on or in the car, and what it's function was within canon.
Also, mimnimum in NY at time of Ghostbusters was 3.35/hr, so a full time job ran almost $7000/year. So 11,500 a year was actually pretty decent.
“I would actually love a pole in my place.”
Haha, I thought the same. Great minds think alike.
Hey......phrasing
and on that line an army of Simps was born
lol
For what? Ghostbusting, firefighting or what?
Slimer ( the green blob ) is supposed to represent John Belushi, who was best friend of Dan Akroyd who wrote most of the screenplay. John died not to long before the movie was made.
"That song" is Cleaning Up The Town by The Bus Boys. Great band.
"That's the bedroom, but nothing ever happened in there."
There's a joke there...
The cheesy special effects make this movie even better haha
Venkman: Well that's alright, we can just put it right back in there.
Ray: We certainly can Dr. Venkman.
Hahaha. That is ice cold.
This is an absolute classic! Your reactions were spot on. 🤣 All the feels.
This does have a sequel if you find the scary movies get too much for you and you need a break. People debate about the quality of it in comparison to the original but I liked it.
Yep. I easily had as much fun with Part 2 as with this one.
It was awful
While I didn't enjoy the sequel as much as the original, it was still almost infinitely better than the remake.
I certainly don't think the second one holds up to the first, but it was still an enjoyable movie.
Jnosh Poha is a delight
12:09 Mary: "They're going to be doing a lot of damage, I'm sure."
Me: "You have no idea!" 😁
If you didn’t notice that guy that plays the nerd at the beginning is Rick Moranis from the movie Honey I shrunk the kids lol
Please watch part 2 too!
The special effects for 1984 were actually really good.
The Bookshelf falling was real and they just went with it.
Pretty funny stuff.
Your right, no human would stack books this way 📚👻🚫
Right, and Bill Murray ad-libbed his lines on the spot, which is why Dan Akyroyd only shakes and nods his head in reply, having had no prior time to think of a suitable response.
You have just witnessed my all time favorite movie!
Get her!"
"Alcoholic blob" was hilarious. Mary always delivers. Can't wait for the upcoming scary movies.
His name is Slimer. There was also a cartoon “The Real Ghostbusters”.
Also Mary the cop who told the Ghostbusters that the mayor wanted to see them also played the cop Sergeant Al Powell in die hard
Reginald VelJohnson made a career of playing cops.
Also the same cop/ actor in "Family Matters" TV Series, the one with Steve Urkel.
There is no third Ghostbusters yet. It won't be out until November.
Afterlife 😁
Slimer (the green ghost) is actually supposed to represent Dan Aykroyd’s late friend John Belushi who was in the movie animal house
Slimer! But I'm sure if he goes on a diet, he could become slimmer! ;)
19:18 -- on set, the actors who were inside the chair were self conscious about grabbing Sigourney in the "wrong places"... She met with them and said, "you guys are working blind from inside a chair and it's for 30 seconds.... Just make it look good."
"I would actually love a pole in my place!" - Mary Cherry. 😜
Mary just a moment of honesty. Your collarbones are amazing!
You should check out The Hillywood Show's "Supernatural" parodies. There are 2. The first uses the song "Shake it off" and the 2nd uses "Ghostbusters". Both have cameos by the "Supernatural" cast members.
It might not be as enjoyable for her if she's never seen the show.
Seriously, Ghostbusters 2 (made about 5 years after this one, with all the same cast)
Is definitely worth a watch.. don’t let anyone tell you differently
.
I’ll admit some people might think it’s a little Cornier and not quite as good as this one. But really.. it’s a fun, good time trust me, with even more Rick Moranis 👍.
"It's Viiiiigooo!"
It's not funny.
It absolutely is worth seeing. The story's not as tight and simple, but the jokes are great, every character from the 1st one is back and each one grows, there are hilarious scenes, and just more classic New York 80s culture to soak up. Do it, Mary. You will enjoy it.
@@TedBrogan dull, listless, and humorless. It's an example of why most sequels are awful.
Peter McNichol........nuff said
The green blob “Slimer” was a sort of mascot for them and worked with the team in the GB cartoons I watched as a kid. He’s not evil or anything, he’s just a nuisance at times.
Instead of a firehouse dog they had a firehouse ghost.
The actor who played Egon passed away a few years ago and they're going to do another Ghostbusters movie and one of the actors who's going to be in it it's the one kid from stranger things who worth the glasses.
It’s directed by his son
@@JedHead77 yeah I forgot about that
I'm really looking forward to Afterlife.
When we saw this in the theater, when the librarian ghost says "shhhhhh" it brought chills. The sounds went right through us.
Yeah, “Temple of Doom” was the first movie to be rated PG-13
"Busting makes me feel good" hahaha, I loved how mary caught on to that joke instantly :D
RIP Harold Ramis.
Young Frankenstein always good for October laughs. The original Children of the Corn is a classic. White Noise (2005).
Horror with comedy: Evil Dead II, An American Werewolf in London.
Re-Animator, Bride of Re-Animator and whatever the third one was called.
For a more Ghostbuster-ish mix of comedy to horror: High Spirits, from 1988.
Oh yeah, and Shaun of the Dead of course!
Dead Alive
To this day, William Atherton, the actor who played the EPA guy can walk down the street and people will yell "Dickless!" to him
“OMG! I would be eating myself.”
😳… excuse me: what?
😂😜
And THAT wasn’t SUS? 🤣
