Yeah, I wouldn't go this route if I were you. Using bounty hunters tends to get people lawsuits. I would do the collection thing or take her to small claims court. Hiring someone to threaten or intimidate or harass someone will get you a lawsuit. That's far more than $700. Plus, using a bounty hunter they will charge you more than what you're trying to get back, so just go to court.

I’m sorry there are crappy people that take advantage of you. Should start demanding half up front and half at time of service so your not completely crapped on by crappy people!
Yea, contracts or some form of written agreement are usually the way to go on things like this. No way to weasel out of it that way.

I have developed a rule: if the project is over $500, first half of payment is required to begin the job and second half upon completion. In my opinion there's more upsides to doing this than down sides:
1. It ensures that you are getting some payment upfront if the customer had any intention of not paying you or not paying you timely
2. It motivates myself and/or employees as it completely removes the stressors of wondering if the customer won't pay for all the hard work you're doing (or they're a late payer)
3. There's a higher chance of receiving full payment due to a psychological effect that if you're already invested half-in; then paying the 2nd half is a bit of an easier pill to swallow (instead of receiving one really large bill).
However, I will admit there are some downsides. It makes billing a bit more complicated and it makes tracking payments by job and/or tracking numbers more time-consuming to keep accurate. But, again, in my opinion the upsides out weight the downsides.

My rule of thumb is I need at least my day rate (250$) down on bigger jobs+ cost of materials if is mulch

I quoted a job for $2500 asked for 33% and was told by the customer that she felt unsure. I explain. To her we were on the same boat, I can put off not getting my pay on labor, but not fronting the material. Oh well
This is the rule I follow for my Automotive business especially for major work, that would cost a lot lets say 700-3k I'd get half to begin work and once Im done I get the rest or if customer doesn't pay the rest then atleast Im not screwed (I work alone so don't have to pay any employees and I own my own shop thats on my land) and have money to put toward the business and future stuff I would like to get.

add a collections fee of 20% in your paperwork and when you send to collections have them collect the original plus your additional 20% fee so you keep your profit margin.
Collections is 'meh.' Sue in small claims court. Then she has to stand in front of a judge and explain why she feels she doesn't owe this money, or just not show up; she'll lose, you'll get amount, plus late fees, plus court costs, and that will increase weekly until she pays. If she doesn't pay, you take the judgement, hire a deputy to enforce it, and go to her house and you and the deputy take that amount from her or equivalent property (value to be judged by you and the deputy, not her). I'd be waaaay more worried about this path than collections and messing up my credit; you know her credit is already crap, so why would this be a threat to her?

@@soulsreaper7145 Not sure where you got that, but you are absolutely wrong. Once you have a judges order, if the debtor doesn't pay, you take the order to the sheriff or constable, pay them some money (which is F'd up, like paying 'enforcement' money for them to do their job), and show up at the house. The order allows you to take whatever is necessary to satisfy the debt, within reason of course.
This is settled legal procedure, practice the read/research/share process in that order.
I'm pretty sure it's after 5 days you can show up to their property. It's within your right. Although, now he has to tip toe because of the judgement and I'm sure they don't want to put that in jeopardy. However, you are wrong. Look up the laws, federal laws, and let us know! 😊
Small claims where i am will cost $280. Getting a writ to enforce the judgment is $350. It will still be on you to collect. People don't just pay because you have a judgment.

In Tennessee you can get customers for theft of service and if it’s over $500 it’s a felony.

I loaned a good friend's son $40 during an "emergency" while his parents were out of town. The emergency turned out to be a need for drugs and the parents refused to pay me back. I was at their front door every day for three days at dinner time. They finally paid me back.

I sold something today.
The buyer wanted to pick up in a week and was willing to pay upfront.
I told them they can pay half and i will hold until the day of puck up they offered. If they don't collect then i keep the money and go to next buyer. They agreed to these terms.
Consider taking a certain amount of payment upfro t to protect yourself.

I run a small lawn maintenance company i have had clients add stuff on that wasn’t included in the original quote and complain about the services its irritating but u have to work with them or just walk away if they refuse to pay im not ruining my reputation over a 50$ call for a mow because of being unprofessional and losing your cool but i love your videos mike and i watch u for advice!
Might I suggest a certified letter next time this happens, instead of a note left in the driveway stuck under a rock. 😉
This is why I only take credit card payments or cash upfront. With cards i charge half the money the second I arrive on site as soon as my boot steps on the ground I run the card for half the payment and charge the last half as soon as I’m done.
Can a person ever refuse the charges on their credit card ? , and if so how often does that happen ?.
Being paid upfront would definitely be my biggest concern about being in that , or most types of businesses .
1. Signed contract.
2. Pay time on arrival or prior to arrival.

It can be demoralizing how sometimes making mistakes snowball into bigger problems… but facing them head on and course correcting is a valuable lesson. 22/he base pay is insane though man. Even if you dont get P4P i think thats still valuable.
This was the first video I’ve seen of yours. Wow! I thought this was going to be a typical mowing video. Wrong! This was more of a journey. It was the good, bad , and ugly side of running a business like that. The last part of the video, lot of businesses owners would have said we could of done more and been more efficient. You stepped back and looked at the situation and realized it was your mistake and owned it. It takes a strong person to admit a mistake like that. Keep up the good work!
Small Claims Court is your best bet here I believe. It works here in Texas, anyway 😊.

Should state on quotes/ invoices that payment is due within x days of job completion. Any payment after this time will incur a fee & if payment has to go to collections the customer will be liable for that cost too. At least his cost’s will be covered. I don’t know how some have the gall to get a contractor in then not pay: disgusting behaviour.

You charge the customer more if there is more debris or it takes extra time. Don't eat that. That's why it's an estimate. If anything just charge them at cost. I've been doing this 20 years here in Florida. Never had a customer that had a problem if you explain it to them.
Just came across your channel. If you’re ever losing money in your business small tweaks make a massive difference. For example if you have a POS asking for tip is a good way to add more revenue especially if you’re the actual person working. Also increase profit margins but small tweaks 2-3% cushion on bigger projects over certain thresholds example $500 add 2-3% $1000 add 3-4% $1500 add 4-5% ultimately these small changes will help you spread risk better so you have less loss days. Also teaching staff should have its time and place in the schedule without taking time away from customers.
Never ask the customer to give you a 5 star review like he did at 9:22 in this video. Other than that, good stuff Mike. This guy is like your west coast brother with long hair.

Someone I knew had a small business and would take a $500 personal check as a deposit. He would not cash it unless he was not paid for the rental. Many times the checks would bounce so then the customer had to go to court for passing bad checks. through court order he usually got the money that was owed to him and the bad non-paying customer had a huge headache and bad credit on their record for passing bad checks. It was a used car rental business. I believe he was able to get some people for Grand theft auto too.

Go to the hood and find someone you can pay to collect. The first thing is it's now three times for having to collect, they will take care of it, just don't ask how they do it.

Put a lein on their property that's what I do and it works. Instead of loosing their property they usually pay pretty quick after that then I black list them!
@@orangepeel3465 the problem is i live in california and the law wouldnt be on my side BUT it ended up working out after i wrote him a letter threatening to take him to court. I gambled because it could have backfired on me if he had reported me to the cslb but I won.
I wish you guys would go more in depth on the subject of collections. When is it worth doing it? How do you go about getting started? What did he write on the note to convince the customer to finally pay?
Probably just warned them that it would be sent to collections after a certain period of time. That's when it will affect their credit score and some people will avoid paying anything until it hits their credit.

I wanted to give you an opportunity to make the payment before that happens, so please reach out to me as soon as possible so we can get that resolved." And just be as friendly as possible about it.

You can sue for unpayed labor after contract and not paying in time, tbh after that its free intrest and case

Always, always, always put everything you are going to do and more importantly what you are NOT going to do in writing in the "work plan" and estimate (WP&E). You should record the walk throughs with the patron while preparing the WP&E and the after completion walk through. All of that will be sufficient to win in small claims court.

I don t want to be that guy.. but i m a student, it is summer so i work full time at a grocieries store, one of the biggest in the country ( cluj, kaufland) i get paid somewhere around 4 dollars PER HOUR. 1.50 per min it is crazy for me.. my boy here making 90/hour damn with a bussiness that requires no school, just a few days training. USA is crazy.

You should never wake backwards when mowing lawns I did it years ago and and when I fell backwards and the mower landed on my foot and cut off my big toe and broke several toes . Doctor said I was very lucky that my hole foot wasn't cut off.
Happened to my neighbor, pulled the mower up on her foot thank God my grandmother was there lots of screaming

My son started the same business in our state. I manage all his paperwork and money for him and the guys and gals who work for him. I watch alot of judge judy and learned a few good things.
1. Always take pictures or video of the property before and after.
2. Always have a signed contract with the customer.
3.Bring everything to court. When you take them to small claims you will win.
4. Don't let these pieces of crap get to you or consider giving it up.

I’m looking to eventually groom dogs on my own at home and I’ve been told by several folks in my circle to take payment BEFORE service for our particular field of work because of the amount of times people will try and NOT pay after services. People are sure great huh
It's not an easy line of work. I watch the "Girl with Dogs" youtube channel and it doesn't look easy. But with pets everywhere people need the service, so there's definitely money to be made. Good luck with your small business.
Bless your heart my husband does yards and sometimes he doesn't even get paid they take advantage because he is just a nice guy they even went as far as to pay him and checks then turn around and cancel every check. At the time he was putting them in my account and well my account got close in my husband paid me of what I had in my account

There is a law. Theft of services. Save that for last resort. Usually bugging them works.
When a client doesn't pay, they go on a do not answer list. I tell the other people I know in my area to not work with them. I had one who waited a few years and pretended to be someone else lol.
Jeez, I am totally underpaid! I'm an old woman trying to make grocery money and I have two yards that only pay me 45 bucks!
I understand too well the reality of underestimating a project. Not so bad on small projects but expensive lessons in what "not" to overlook next time when it is a large project. Not making the same mistake again helps take some of the sting out of it though. Thanks for the "bad" along with the "good". :)
No she won't. She'll just default by not showing up for that Court and then he would have to go through all kinds of BS still to try to collect and ultimately then will be on their credit report so same thing will happen .

Skip collections and take them to small claims. They can pay the extra fees instead of you.
