I can respect the amount of effort it's taken thus far to create this project, especially as just a personal project without a team. However, I must confess... I don't really like how it looks. I'll try to explain why, while also bearing in mind it's very much a WIP. Like, for instance, the inconsistency between who has white outlines or not, and the ransom note-looking font seem like obvious "I'm not done yet" kind of situations. It mostly stems from a general deviation away from the pop-up book style of presentation. I guess how I would describe it is that the original looked vibrant, but also rich in color. For example, the grass in the fight against the fuzzies looks "richer" with a slight yellow tinge and better shading. Similarly, the scene at Mario's house is much less eye catching because all the colors seem more equalized in their shading and vibrance. Same goes for Peach's Castle; it's a little bit the floor, but specifically because the red rug and blue curtains lost their characteristic brightness. They look so much drier now, it's way less interesting. (I do like the detailing you added to the rug, though.) Sometimes, I think it's for the better. The wooden beams in the Mario Bros' house benefit from the added detail, I think. Also, I question the choice to use Color Splash graphics instead of uprezing them yourself. It's less work, sure- a lot less, actually, so making them all yourself might be an unrealistic prospect- but there are a few gripes I have with them in this HD project: 1) They're also watered down, which makes me wonder if these graphics were the reason some parts of the game look less interesting. 2) The animation freakin' sucks. Two frame walk cycles? Two frame idle animations? The original had the characters... ya know, actually move. Yeah, it wasn't much- compare 2 frames to, like, 4 frames- but it made a world of difference. Please, if you keep the graphics, find some way to animate them better than the people who made the sprites did. It looks bad in Sticker Star, it looks bad in Color Splash, and it looks bad here- especially because they're filling in for sprites that were better animated. 3) The white outlines don't work so well here, in my opinion. It takes away from the art style the game was aiming for. I believe the intent of the white outline was to make everyone in the new Paper Marios look like paper cut-outs, but that just isn't congruent with the original. I personally would vouch for removing them. There are some other small details that get me, like the changed skybox that doesn't have those 12-sided-die looking formations. I miss those already, as weird as they were (though not a big loss, if I'm being honest). There's also the Mario Bros' house, where the nameplate on the front looks extremely bulky and weird. TTYD and SPM changed the texture to be distinctly wooden, but didn't bulk it up. One thing I really like, though, is how you made the toads more distinct. I especially like how you made one of the toad guards have a red cap with white spots- that simple inversion adds a lot more diversity to the group, and is very much appreciated. All in all, I'm not impressed, but I do hope that you'll continue to work on this and improve it. Regardless of whether you take these criticisms to heart or not, I'm interested in seeing how it'll turn out once the "I'm not done yet" details I mentioned at the beginning are worked out, and once more of the textures have been updated.
I get WHY the white outlines are a thing. Just not an aesthetic I personally enjoy. I very much preferred the art style prior to those. Particularly the original and TTYD.
It is your project, and I actually love it. I just don't know, it looks amazing for just 3 days, but I've always said to myself that I prefer the look of the first paper Mario over the new ones. That said, this looks incredible and I'm actually down to replay this game with these graphics. But I'd be interested in watching the original textures and characters with the same design in HD and the black and white outline.
... this video made me realize what it is about the more recent games' art style that I hate. I've never been able to pinpoint it, but there's always been something off-putting about it. White outlines. Bowser looks so good, everything else less so. The white just makes them stand out from the background too much, like they don't belong there.
this actually works EXTREMELY well as a HD project. this is genuinely stunning. Usually HD projects just show a game's graphical flaws more blatantly, but this... this looks at home.
you should seriously consider getting rid of the white borders around the characters to make them actually feel like they belong in the world. one of the best parts of of paper mario 64's asthetic was that the black borders always fit the characters. The white looks seriously off.
Many people hate the white borders while i think it gives the characters more "pop" (that's just my opinion). This stuff looks amazing, keep up the good work my talented friend!! :D

skilarbabcock Imagine being uneducated on how the series started out. It was never a Paper Mario in Japan until TTYD, it started off as “Super Mario RPG 2” and then “Mario Story”. TYYD was “Mario Story 2” until late in development, so, no, the complaint of things looking like paper is a valid one.

Regardless of whether you take these criticisms to heart or not, I'm interested in seeing how it'll turn out once the "I'm not done yet" details I mentioned at the beginning are worked out, and once more of the textures have been updated.
I'd say to get rid of the white lines, they make the characters look like they don't belong in the world/pop out too much.
Attac Mage And get rid of all CS influence.
Oh hey, I thought the same thing
I get WHY the white outlines are a thing. Just not an aesthetic I personally enjoy. I very much preferred the art style prior to those. Particularly the original and TTYD.
@@darken27 same
yes!
Hmmm, I like the black outlines a bit better. Closer to the original, and Bowser looks really clean with his
This looks amazing! Thanks for putting in the time to do this and for sharing your work :)
Kammy over there lookin like she’s struggling just to exist, I feel dat
... this video made me realize what it is about the more recent games' art style that I hate. I've never been able to pinpoint it, but there's always been something off-putting about it.
White outlines. Bowser looks so good, everything else less so. The white just makes them stand out from the background too much, like they don't belong there.
Personally I think that Peach's Minister should be replaced with Toadsworth, but this is fantastic nonetheless.
Why make it inaccurate to the original? We aren’t trying to become Nintendo by encouraging inaccuracies in remakes.
@@jordanburkert6208 Sometimes the original is an inferior product
Jordan Burkert They are already making it inaccurate to the original by changing the art style.
Simply Tired And that is not the case here.
@@bunsmasterbunny debatable
this actually works EXTREMELY well as a HD project. this is genuinely stunning. Usually HD projects just show a game's graphical flaws more blatantly, but this... this looks at home.
It all looks really good except the white outlines imo. Would love to see a version of this without them
This looks really cool. I can tell it's in early stages but i can't wait to see more as this goes on!
Update:

No white outline:

FANTASTIC!!! It's very nice!
Awsome Job!
you should seriously consider getting rid of the white borders around the characters to make them actually feel like they belong in the world. one of the best parts of of paper mario 64's asthetic was that the black borders always fit the characters. The white looks seriously off.
@@christianmino4073 I'm working on it ua-cam.com/video/TL_ihdqeItk/v-deo.html
Bro this looks amazing, including the white lines! Keep it up man, I'll be playing when this releases!
Kickass! They should hire you for "Paper Mario 64: Remastered"!
🎵SEGA, hire this man! SEGA, hire this man! He's using the Paper Mario engine in anyway he can!🎵
One problem, that will probably never happen
NINTENDO
Sega Nani!
Many people hate the white borders while i think it gives the characters more "pop" (that's just my opinion). This stuff looks amazing, keep up the good work my talented friend!! :D
If the SM All Stars 3D of the Nintendo Switch contains Paper Mario, I wish it look like that :)
this look insane honestly great work i didn't expect it to look this good i'm gonna follow this development
this really shows how paper mario games have lost originality... it went from their own real looking world, to everything looking like paper and cardboard... :(
You DO know that the the earlier Paper Mario games emphasized that the environment was created by edited cardboard without the obvious details that actual cardboard had - even the trees are flat as paper!
But to be honest, the modern Paper Mario games got a little too extreme...
Imagine complaining Paper Mario looks like paper.
Smart Bulb Productions You do know you’re full of shoot right? It never looked like paper or cardboard, it looked like a drawing/comic book.
skilarbabcock Imagine being uneducated on how the series started out. It was never a Paper Mario in Japan until TTYD, it started off as “Super Mario RPG 2” and then “Mario Story”. TYYD was “Mario Story 2” until late in development, so, no, the complaint of things looking like paper is a valid one.
This looks amazing. I can't wait to try it out. You've done amazing work so far.
You're a god for making this on that time, if it was my desicion you would made the paper mario saga
Awesome progress!
This looks good but loses out on the original style's mario world charm
I haven’t played paper Mario 64, but you don’t understand how much this actually makes me more interested in enjoying the story it has to offer.
Only Goombario Needs A New Sprite and the game it's perfection
PLEASE keep this up, even though this is still pretty small and early, it looks FANTASTIC!!
This is sooo cool! I've always wanted to see a mod like this. Are there any for TTYD?
Well, ttyd has an hd texture mod out rn. It dosent have the cs/ok art style, but uts just the same stuff but MUCH crisper and nicer looking. Look it up!
@@sethgob5591 no I've seen it! It's awesome.
This is freaking awesome. I really wish you the best of luck on this project.
i still like mario with his old style anger sprite
This is so beautiful, your literally doing gods work,Ive always wanted Nintendo to give the OG Paper mario a facelift (spoilers i think its better then TTYD) I love all the character redesigns,my only problem is the Kung Fu Masters look the same, and the text bubble should look a bit different, but please keep up what your doing, your a wonderful awesome person who deserves all the love and support your getting on this project
Yo amé este Paper Mario, aunque los gráficos medió pobres de la N64 siempre me molestaron un poco. Si terminas este proyecto y lo publicas, este juego quedaría perfecto 🙌🏼💚
ahhhh a man of culture who plays CampBuddy i see
Oh my god !!!!! This is insanely beautiful, you did an amazing job.
Wow :0 te quedó genial (si no mal leí xd)
I've never been a fan of the whute outlines but whatever it's your project and there are others who like it too. The fact that if this gets finished would be cool enough that there's finally an HD texture pack of Paper Mario.
It's very well done, but this just makes me realize how lifeless and bland the current paper mario artstyle is.
Aw man. I LOVE this! I'm currently playing the orginal Paper Mario for the first time so this is amazing to see! Keep up the great work!
I dislike the white outlines as they just look unnecessary when there's already black outlines on people. Also Peach's castle is missing the vibrant colours in the original.
Or I was forgetting, congratulations you are realizing in my opinion the desire of many people: 3
Origami king must be very beautiful, but I hoped with all my heart that they would remaster Paper Mario 64 .... you are making it
This looks great man. White lines need to be around everyone, and the grass "square" texture could use a bit more transparency. But hell everyone is a critic. I really just appreciate you making such an awesome mod! Keep up the great work!!!! I can't wait to see what the final looks like!
You've done all that in 3 days? That's amazing!
There's a few technical issues and more could be done with it but overall I LOVE this. keep up the great work. ngl I'm drooling in hopes of seeing more.
Looks awesome !
I think once the two main compaints will be fixed it'll be perfect
Dude for a one man team and 3 days this is so impressive!!! Keep it up!!!!
Omg this looks fantastic. This just makes me wish the series was like this again so bad. Not sure if Origami King will be like this all the way but... well we can only hope for something close.
3 days!? Nice work. If any there are any suggestions that are helpful, take them. If not, toss ‘em. You’re doing a great job.
I recommend eye drops & blue anti glare light glasses If your eyes are hurting. Breaks help too.
bro I'm getting so much nostalgia by this, this project has changed so much
All the best with your project. Incredible for 3 days work. Take your time and don't burn yourself out 👍
This looks really good, there are some parts that do need work but this is a Work In Progress so I do understand.
With a little bit more work, time, effort, and other various things this fan-made remake oughta be great!
Bro, I appreciate the effort, but the original style of the game compared to all other paper Mario games is what makes the N64 one so unique. Keep up the good work tho.
This is awesome dude. Just commenting to show support! :D
Wow, it looks really incredible. Amazing work !
This is what I needed my entire life.
Color Splash looks SOOOO good.
Keep up the good work! This looks amazing, I'm looking forward to seeing this project's updates.
This legit looks like proper Remaster material right there, if not remake at this point. Keep up the great work mate !
.
let's just hope a CERTAIN company doesn't come uninvited and thrash the party like they usually do with fan-made stuff...
you did this by yourself over 3 days??? wow, very impressive! you should be proud
Finally! A good looking texture pack for Paper Mario. We had a bunch of 20% finished texture packs with work so shoddy that I wouldn't be surprised if a 14 year old made it in their spare time. This is different though, this looks great!
This looks great so far! I've always liked the aesthetic of the modern games so this is definitely something I'll keep an eye on
This is a great job! I love it so much! This is so beautiful. Continue like this!
Fantastic!! All that's needed is the difference in outline, but how great!!
This looks really amazing! Especially considering you did this all by yourself! Looking forward to more updates on this!
amazing! awesome job man, you made my favorite game look so good!
This actually looks great and with Kammy going from 64 to the new textures shows how you were actually playing it and how it runs even with textures missing. You’re doing great without a team but you should probably look into one bc, o o p
This is... A PURE MASTERPIECE!!!
Good job dude
Dude, this looks awesome!!! And you did this by yourself?! This is outstanding!! Now I got two to look foward to, Origami King (Which I've already pre-ordered) and Paper Mario HD!! Keep up the good work, and make sure to rest every now and then...
I honestly think the white outlines detract from the visuals. Paper Mario 1 and 2 have a particular aesthetic that I find more appealing than the more recent ones. As a fan project though this is really impressive.
One of the best games ever made. The textures make it look great
OH!
My Hearth!
I can't take this!
This is BEAUTIFUL!!!!!
