Samuel G·O Wind Waker was the exception, not the rule, and it was connected almost entirely by water. It was also a completely different genre. Doing an open world for an adventure game ≠ doing an open world for a platformer
@@maddiemiller7548 Well, same company, so you COULD expect the same results! Plus this mod does not make the game a completely seamless open world either, so the water argument is kind of moot (stretches of water in WW were used to stream assets in and out of memory. The loading screens here do the same)! I do agree that making an open world for an adventure game and a platformer are different. Though, more technically challenging? Unheard of at the time? Definitely not. All in all I'm not saying it should have been an open world, nor that we should have expected one (I don't even believe it would've made for a better game!). But I do think it's not unrealistic at all for people to look at Mario Sunshine and think It could've been made the same way this mod works at the time of its creation.
@@Sagaan42 It breaks the order of the game. The reason why I personally prefer Sunshine and Galaxy (just older Mario games) over Odyssey is because in Odyssey you just walk around and picks things up. It makes each stage feel less important, and I just wanted to get it over with after a while, not excited to try dig up bunch of random moons here and there. It made the stages lose magic. In Galaxy, each star has its own route in order to obtain them, which not only made the stars feel more important than the moons in Odyssey (which honestly feels more like picking up blue coins in Sunshine, except there's a bazillion of them), it made every stage fun to re-play. Slapping every star/shine/moon on the same stage, so you can just pick up everyone in one run, makes it feel less rewarding, again, more like you are picking up blue coins. Making it open-world also breaks the order, cause you don't feel the same accomplishment of unlocking new things and places. Mods such as these are for people who are in a rush to finish video games, and can't sit down and enjoy themselves, patiently getting through the journey.
@@NightMourningDove This is most definitely the sunshine Rom hacking golden age. Miluases made the level editor about 6 or so years back and Yoshi2 made a custom collision editor. There were a few mods that have started and never came to fruition in the years following that until the release of Sunshine Arcade. After that, He made an expansion to the mod arcade 2 and then I released Sunburn, and now the whole SMS modding community is pulling together for the next projects Super Mario Eclipse. We hope to release the first demo of the newest mod early next year but it's not going to be done for a while realistically.
I played it for 4 hours, and there are a few things I noticed: In Ricco 4, when I went inside the yellow cage thing in the middle of the level where there's Shine 3, there were two gates at the bottom which prevented me to go up it from bellow. Also in the same place, there were 2 Bloopers that gave me a Blue Coin each, which isn't what's supposed to happen, there usually is only one of them, although if I'm not mistaken, I think these Blue Coins count as the same, so I didn't got a duplicate. I'd suggest removing one of the Bloopers and the additional gate. Also, from Delfino Plaza, I took a Turbo Nozzle, then went to the Airport, only to be thrown into the very first mission of the game. I think that's normal so you don't just go directly to Delfino Plaza first and miss the first Shine permanently, but what happened is that, when I picked up FLUDD, I still have the Turbo Nozzle, and then I tried busting open the nearby doors, and the game crashed with this error message: Invalid read from 0x00000000, PC = 0x801e68d0 I played it in Dolphin, the latest developper version, and I'm not sure if you already knew this from the Pianta in the save room.
The two gates In Ricco were intentional. I wanted you to enjoy the level Nintendo made for you instead of skipping the whole thing 🙂. Didn't notice the two bloopers in ricco I'll get on that. As for the gate crashing in air strip. This is probably because Nintendo didn't put the files for the broken gate in the first version of airstrip inorder to save space in the games files. In that case I'll fix it soon. The town doesn't count as a custom stage. There is a cloudy stage, a spooky stage, outset island, and a secret fourth stage I made just to annoy people. Thanks for the heads up with the bug's I'll fix them soon.
@@epicwade6346 Ah ok, gotcha, I get it now. It's also a good thing I know Bronceado isn't one of the custom stages and that there's one more, because I'm gonna stream the rest tomorrow and I do want to show everything. The other thing, I completely missed Bronceado Town because I think you need more Shines for its gate to appear? What that did though is that I scouted Delfino Plaza for a while without finding it. If it was me and if it's to be available only later, at least I'd block a visible entrance until then, I was pretty clueless at first.
@@Neon_Henchman yeah you get the town after entering corona mountain. The town acts as a hub to the custom stages. Could totally make a blocked off version of the entrance but asides from fixing bug's I am just about ready to be done with this. Pretty busy making stages of a upcoming sms hack with over 300 shines and I want to shift focus and work on that soon. Just asked the guys on the modding discord about the gate in the air strip. Apparently those gates are more or less hardcoded to be buggy like that. I'll see if my cheat code guy can bake a cheat code to fix it though. We'll see. Depending what time you stream I might be there if not I'll probably watch the stream later. Watching streamers is really helpfull for finding these stupid game crashes.
@@epicwade6346 Hey that'd be pretty cool, I'll be sure to sent you the link to the stream when I'm ready, although I do stream in French. The first stream, I'm uploading it as I'm writing, so you can see it soon. By the way, was there no way for the game to throw you out of bonus worlds like Ricco4 or Pinna2? I'm saying this because when I do them, I'm forced to use the "Exit Area" option on the Start menu, and so this forces me not to use the open world mechanic and having to rely on the vanilla paths. There were also the 2 Blue Coins that you unveil from shapes in the sand of the Pinna Beach that were strangely hard to spray fully, they would cancel out my progress faster than I sprayed them with water, you can see them in 29:00 in my first stream. And finally, there were times where I couldn't skip cutscenes, which is odd because sometimes it work, sometimes not on the same cutscenes. Sorry if I keep pointing out flaws, but I really do appreciate how you can do several missions in one shot, it totally revamped my usual experience of Sunshine as being able to skip cutscenes and unnecessary transitions made for a much smoother experience, I really appreciate it so far.
@@Neon_Henchman I updated the patch I think two days ago so cutscenes are skipable after the first second. You used to only be Abel to skip cutscenes in the first second but with the latest update it works no matter how many seconds late you hit the a button. If you actueally kill yourself in the secret stages it gives you access to the red coin shine without needing to backtrack there a second time. For example enter Ricco 4 secret collect the shine then kill yourself. Suddenly when you respawn the red coin switch will be there, so there's actueally a Verry good practical use for not getting kicked out even in the secret stages. The blue coins in the sand have always been super fast to dissapear If I remember correctly so that's just the game working as normal👍.
I thought this would be a meme, but it's actually a really nice quality of life mod!! Being able to go to (at least neighboring) worlds just makes sense too, since we can see the locations from other worlds anyways I love the inclusion of outset island
I've been playing the console version and it still boots me out of levels/resets Delfino Square after collecting a shine. After playing some Mario 64, it is real nice to do these shines in a more custom order for courses and at the beginning of the game. I really like that new feature.
Did you enable cheats in nintendont? That may be the issue. If you have the issue of getting warped out after collecting a nozzle box that's been fixed in the latest update.
@Gustav 123 According to datamines, it is actually emulation. I think it's disappointing because 64 and Sunshine haven't aged very well and needed improvements, but we didn't get any. It is also disappointing that we only have 3 games. Where's 64 DS, Galaxy 2, and 3D Land?
@Gustav 123 I think that a remastered and maybe slightly reworked version of 64 DS should have been there instead of OG 64. I do realize that 3D Land would have absolutely been out of place, but it's still a great game. With Sunshine and 64... I don't know. From the rumors and leaks before they were announced, I was honestly expecting that they would be full on remakes, but clearly they were never going to be, so I don't know. One more thing that I'm a little sad about with the collection is just that it doesn't feel like a celebration of Mario at all. You have collections like the Sonic and Mega Man and Kirby ones that really do feel special. Then you have 3D All Stars which is literally just slightly altered emulations of the original games and a music player. Kirby had a timeline and even some extra content based on Return to Dreamland. Mega Man and Sonic collections let you view toys and magazines and box art and all sorts of things. It's just underwhelming, even if it is cool to be able to play these games on the Switch. Sorry if my reply is too long.

Every other game system released while he was in charge had a notable issue to. I don't remember there being an ambitious Mario game on the Wii U.
In quarantine I've recently been trying to 100% sunshine and the 30-60 added coins and blue coins in multiple missions is something I wish the original game had! It's so frustrating that every time I want to do the 100 coin shine or get blue coins I need to look up what mission is best for it
The open world aspect is brilliant! I always enjoyed how you could see other maps in the background while in another map but it always bothered me that you couldn’t actually reach those areas!
Does it work with the original Japanese version? I have all three regions on differing formats (JP & US on Dolphin, JP & PAL on physical Gamecube and just PAL on Switch) but it would be nice to know if it's compatible. since it would save me from saving to back up my JP copy savegames. (the console forces you to erase your save if you choose an iso or disk from a different region) Currently Sunburn is on my US iso.
Sunburn has a lot of custom coding all of which have been done based off of the code in the us version and so will only work on us sunshine. I have no plans to make a release for other regions as that would mean my coding guy would need to rewrite the code over and over again. If anyone wants to make a version with text for another language I would be happy to host it on the download page but I have no plans for anything more than us sunshine.
While we have the sunburn stages loading fine we can't get custom codeing to work on the switch version at the moment. The second the game boots it checks to see if the game's start.dol has been tampered and will auto stop the game if it has. (The start.dol is the GameCube equivalent of a .exe and is the thing responsible for all the custom coded stuff in sunburn). If we ever find a way arround that then I will port it to switch for sure.

64 to an extent did some of the stuff vanilla Sunshine doesn't, so expectations aren't unwarranted
I've always thought open world Sunshine would be so cool. Super glad to see it here!
This man is doing gods work
Ya
Maybe this is finally the birth of Sunshine ROM hacks :OO
SUNSHINE 2 WHEN
@@NightMourningDove This is most definitely the sunshine Rom hacking golden age.
Sniff, it’s beautiful! 😍
Taking the game I already love, improve it in many ways, adding new content! I wanna play this SOOOO BAD!!!
FUN FACT: The sound effects at 1:44 is the gamecube begging for mercy
I don’t care about the title, you just gave me a reason to replay sunshine!
Me when I see outset island from my favorite game: ok yeah suuure and Luigi is going to be the main character
Amazing love the idea and the additions, I was wandering when someone would mod this game and add something new to it great work!
I think that's normal so you don't just go directly to Delfino Plaza first and miss the first Shine permanently, but what happened is that, when I picked up FLUDD, I still have the Turbo Nozzle, and then I tried busting open the nearby doors, and the game crashed with this error message: Invalid read from 0x00000000, PC = 0x801e68d0
I played it in Dolphin, the latest developper version, and I'm not sure if you already knew this from the Pianta in the save room.
Being able to go to (at least neighboring) worlds just makes sense too, since we can see the locations from other worlds anyways
I love the inclusion of outset island
I feel somecall me johnny would love to see this
I’m loving the GameCube game love recently. Even Mario Kart double dash is getting custom tracks now
I've been playing the console version and it still boots me out of levels/resets Delfino Square after collecting a shine.
Dude I’ve been hoping for years Sunshine would get rom hacks a-la 64. Thank you so much
Nintendo had their chance to do something like this and blew it with a half-assed port. :(
@Gustav 123 nothing. There was just so much potential. But the games are great and it's convenient to have on the switch so I'm not complaining
Emulation, not a port
@Jackson Corley [Student] I did.
This looks awesome! A great game to be sure.. I'll play through it again soon!
This should have been the Super Mario 3D Allstars-version!
This looks absolutely amazing!
Finally Sunshine is a good video game
Dude I just downloaded it and completed it with 70 shines and it is a MASSIVE improvement.
This is EXACTLY the sort of thing Nintendo could've done with 3D All Stars Sunshine.
I dunno what happened to Nintendo after Mario 64 DS; Its the last remake they put any real effort into.
@@Tonatiub Truly. Nintendo has cut so many corners with their games these days, especially after Iwata's death
@@Tonatiub that and Link's Awakening
@@nathanpark Please stop overglorifying what Iwata did. Under him we had two of the worst console launches in Nintendo history and a "program" that stole money from people who used their footage in videos. Every other game system released while he was in charge had a notable issue to.
I don't remember there being an ambitious Mario game on the Wii U.
@@AkameGaKillfan777 Fair point. Out of curiosity, what is your take on Super Mario 3D World?
1:54 is nobody gonna talk about the outset island map
Meanwhile Nintendo barely enhanced anything in the official port.
Yep
Nintendon’t you mean
they enhanced the resolution
@@raidonothoboi4842 Nintendont did, Nintendo didn't
man oh man i love the idea of the interconnected world
the lil details were already there so...it's perfect!
it sounds like the name of a terrible creepypasta
Great job! you clearly care more about this game than Nintendo does with that shitty all stars "remaster". The additions here are really cool!
I personally don't like sunshine but I'll admit this is very impressive.
Thank you very much I played this instead of the all stars version and even streamed it
Im slightly disappointed that this wasn't like a meme video or funny compilation or something.
actually looking forward to playing it.
I'm sure this'll be a hell of a throwback. ^^
Man the title card of super Mario sunburn looks like a really crappy creepypasta from 2012.
Those first look amazing dawg!
Three “new” custom stages, ripped straight out of the Wind Waker.
Outset it ripped from windwaker. I thought it was a stage in sunshine as a kid so I made it one. The rest are my own creation.
@Epic Wade cool
Bless you for making a forest themed level and removing the load out when you get a shine Sprite.
This is actually amazing!
i love how you can freely go to the other areas within an area!
In quarantine I've recently been trying to 100% sunshine and the 30-60 added coins and blue coins in multiple missions is something I wish the original game had! It's so frustrating that every time I want to do the 100 coin shine or get blue coins I need to look up what mission is best for it
Had to comment cause comment section was at triple six and no one needs that energy. Now the world is right again
i'm glad i found this by accident, this looks pretty neat
At first I tought it was a meme, but man this looks so sick.
This looks amazing! Can't wait to play it
Boy, this would have made my first 100% run of the game so much better, especially the control adjustments and extra coins.
More like this is what 3D All-Stars should've done!
Damn you put more effort into this than nintendo
more love and care than the official 35th anniversary rerelease that costs $60 bucks, fucking awesome
Why am I just seeing this now?! This is amazing!!!
Okay now this is epic (Wade).
This is pretty cool👌🏾
Omg ok I NEED THIS !! THIS IS TOO DOPE
You are a legend!
this is just epic man.
Wow this is awesome!
Best thing about this is you can get all the blue coins in one go in each level since certain blue coins won't be only in certain episodes.
I love how one of the extra stages is Outset Island from wind waker
The open world aspect is brilliant! I always enjoyed how you could see other maps in the background while in another map but it always bothered me that you couldn’t actually reach those areas!
The ultimate Speedrun version of the game.
Mario that sunburn looks gnarly dude. I got some alo based sunburn ointment.
Man this is amazing
Epic Wade Thanks for the information. It's no big.
Make the title “Mario Sunlight”, cuz it brings light to the game.
i thought this was gonna be some kind of funny mod where the sun is way more dangerous but this looks really cool
I like how UA-cam only recommended me this now.
this looks awesome!
Will it work on the Super Mario 3D All-Stars version of Super Mario Sunshine?
While we have the sunburn stages loading fine we can't get custom codeing to work on the switch version at the moment. The second the game boots it checks to see if the game's start.dol has been tampered and will auto stop the game if it has. (The start.dol is the GameCube equivalent of a .exe and is the thing responsible for all the custom coded stuff in sunburn). If we ever find a way arround that then I will port it to switch for sure.
Bruh I thought this would just be a meme mod where Mario is really red and takes damage from being in the sun but this is actually hype af
kek
i first thought this is a meme video, but turn out to be some awsome mod
