The weirdest part of the Toadsworth Erasure is that he is Peach’s Kamek, a sort of hold-down-the-fort type that raised the one they serve, and are thus relatively old. Toadsworth even had supportive magic in New Super Mario Bros. But Kamek is consistently around, likely because of his boss fight potential, though even that is in question considering the lack of recent Kamek fights.
I’ve had a theory for a good while now that Toadsworth just died of old age, and Toadette is his successor. I mean we see Toadette in increasingly high-ranking roles in the Switch-era games.
@@rayanalfaraj8I was really hoping they’d use that as a chance to bring him back but nope- we got starlo who I don’t mind but uh guys we had another person who was made to watch over peach..
Toadsworth needs to come back at some point, hed fit great in Luigis Mansion. I can totally see them doing a joke where Luigi hears Toadsworth's voice and gets scared that its his ghost only for Toadsworth to go "I'M NOT DEAD YOU IDIOT, Egad just sent me to give you this thing"
He could have easily replaced Generic Green Toad #52 as the purveyor of the massage tent in Brothership. "Bonds" are so integral to the game's plot; his bond with the Princess would be good storytelling. That, and they threw Birdo into the game who is completely useless and only serves as a gotcha moment when looking for Peach.
It’s a shame that Toadsworth fell by the wayside considering how prevalent he was in the early 2000s. I miss him, and I don’t think his design was the reason he went since he wasn’t that far removed from the standard Toad. Hopefully he’ll pop up again one day, but the odds seem slim.
About the Mario characters ages. Series creator himself said that Mario & Luigi are canonically 24-25 years old, while on old parental controls video show cased that Bowser is 28 while Junior is 7.
I forgot where I heard this, but I think Toadsworth was created for Sunshine to make Mario and Peach's vacation seem less explicitly romantic. I think Nintendo is weird about them officially being a couple.
A big theory I have for this is death. Miyamoto is STRONGLY opposed to the concept of death in the Mario series; even going as far as referring to falling a course as “losing an extra life”. Toadsworth introduces the possibility that characters can grow old and eventually die. Which is an aspect of the lore I think they’re actively attempting to eliminate in an effort to make the characters seem more timeless.
Interesting idea, there arent a lot of older mario characters. Egadd is certainly kicking still but he's more restricted to Luigi's Mansion these days.
The production quality on this video is amazing, and OH MY GOD THAT THUMBNAIL. I don’t know how this doesn’t have more views, because you absolutely deserve more recognition. Seriously, good work man 👏
My favorite obscure Mario character is Wallop from 3D Land. I just think they’re overall 1000x better designed than the freak they cooked up for 3D World to replace them (Walleye). The jumping when you jump mechanic and the back and forth following is tricky but endearing and the lack of spikes makes them not annoying, while the Walleyes don’t jump and have spikes, which makes them less fun in my opinion.
I don't think Peach needs to be getting kidnapped in order for Toadsworth to have a place in the modern franchise. His role in Peach's staff is unique (to the point where every time they just use a regular old Red or Blue Toad in that spot it feels like a missed opportunity). Instead of worrying about Peach while she's gone, he could instead be her second in command who carries out leadership while she is off on adventures. I think he could have easily appeared in Odyssey in the Mushroom Kingdom. And who says he can't have a place mainly in RPGs and spinoffs either? Even if I'd love him in more mainline games too, having him back at all would be better than him just staying in retirement forever. No good reason to not add him to the Mario Kart roster. I don't think the way Peach's role has evolved past the need for his traditional role justifies the complete erasure of him from the world.
To think, the initial reason Toadsworth exists, was so that Nintendo could say Mario Sunshine wasn't a romantic vacation. And I think Nintendo are ashamed of something that's admittedly shallow enough to cut him from the Mario Movie. I personally don't agree, but I can see the logic.
If they cut Toadsworth to make the world feel ageless, it SUPER backfired because it really does feel like he just passed away at some point, and he WAS one of the oldest characters, so… Oh, and if we're sharing obscure Mario characters, I'm picking B. Coz and A. Coz from the gameboy Mario Tennis
My favorite obscure character might not even really count as a character, but they're the HeevHos from Mario 64 (The guys from Wet-Dry World that fling you). I just find them super charming and I never noticed the little Bowser picture on the sides of them saying "Koopa Approved" or something like that. I think a big piece to this puzzle is how Peach's personality has been changed over these last good few years. She's supposed to be this lighthearted, loving princess, but now she's also has more "independent" and plays more valuable roles in the games. Toad's worth used to be Peach's right hand character, reacting to situations for her more often. But now that Peach isn't as much of a nothing burger anymore, Toadsworth isn't really needed to be that voice of reaction. That said bring my man back as a retired old fart or something that's all I ask-
i dont have anything against touch women (in fact i like those a lot) but i think replacing peach's softer personality with the tougher one is kinda weird. feels a bit like mischaracterization tbh.
I think Peach has always been plenty capable, since smb2 even, I think its possible for her to be girly or soft and also have agency and rush into trouble for the good of others. At least in the rpgs she's always been headstrong and a bit naiive and that even shows up in the modern games, like 3d world.

I always thought toadsworth was respected to peach and Mario and Luigi and other characters as a whole to me I always thought toadsworth took character of all 3 characters since he does call Mario master and I was always confused by that. But it’s sad he doesn’t appear anymore but I don’t think he must have died from old age I’m just assuming that.
they should´ve make him playable in mario kart alongside E. Gadd instead of the freaking koopalings and the billion unnecessary clones of Mario and Peach.😒

I think the oversimplification of the broader Mario cast is one of the biggest L's Nintendo has taken in recent years, which is saying a lot. Looking back at old Mario games, especially M&L and Paper Mario, they were so full of personality, story, and just genuinely interesting characters. Dream Team is one of the last games that truly put forth an interesting cast and did something interesting with the basic blueprint of the Mario universe, and always stuck out to me because it's the only 3DS game to really have such qualities. I just think, as someone who grew up loving Mario, that a lot of modern Mario is a disappointment. Like Origami King and Brothership are easily the worst games in their respective series by a long shot, which is insane with how they started to fall off in the 3DS/WiiU era. It's like Nintendo has completely lost sight of what made Mario so great. At least we still get games like Mario Odyssey that are amazing, but from a pure character design perspective they went far beyond anything traditionally Mario for all the unique stuff. Another great example is Mario Strikers Battle League. To me that game just screams that they are so scared of even slightly breaking the mold that has been set for Mario, as that game lost most of the personality and gritty theming that made the series amazing. I just hope one day the Mario franchise has a return to form where it doesn't feel like they're scared to do anything with the characters and world...anyways thanks for coming to my TED talk, just had to rant a bit.
