Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoid pigments found in green leafy vegetables and other colorful fruits and vegetables. They are known for their significant benefits to eye health and vision. These compounds accumulate in the macula, a central region of the retina, where they act as natural antioxidants and blue light filters. By doing so, they help protect the retina from oxidative damage and improve visual perception.
This new study was the first of its kind to show improved visual and cognitive benefits for young children taking lutein and zeaxanthin supplements. Of note, children who took the lutein and zeaxanthin supplements every day for 3-6 months had improvement in their macular pigment scores, improved visual processing speed, a decrease in eye fatigue after digital device use as well as cognitive benefits.
Cognitive benefits seen in this study include improved attention, focus, episodic memory, visual-spatial memory, as well as visual spacial processing speed.
In addition to these benefits, lutein supplements have been shown to enhance other areas of eyesight and health, Including improved memory, sleep, and stress reduction. To learn more, check out this other video we posted • The 5 AMAZING Eye & He...

How many fruits and veggies do you eat in a day?
New Study: link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s12325-024-02785-1
None, vitamins in vegetables are not bioavailable at all and actually vegetables are loaded with antinutrients inhibiting digestion...
Fruits cause me too many gut issues...
Plants barely provide micronutrients and it hurts my soul when a health care provider thinks otherwise because this is objective science proven...
Stop. Eat raw fruits and veggies
Sadly not enough. One to three servings a day.

Ur so handsome doc
I have gone through two barrage laser procedures for retinal hole and lattice. Now I suffer from eye flashes and floaters. The only things that have reduced eye flashes are lutien ziaxanthin billberry and astazathin medicine that I take daily. Now I work 8 hours a day as a Research Assistant for the UN with little to no complications. I'm 25 years old with -8.50 prescription glasses. Thank you doctor eye health UA-cam channel for suggesting these supplements when doctors in my country couldn't give me any solution to eye flashes problem apart from barrage laser surgery
Oh wow! Thanks for sharing that! It makes me very happy to hear you are noticing reduced symptoms!!! How long did you take the supplements before you noticed the changes?
We need tutorial on eye floaters is there any new non invasive treatment available or coming Soon we lost All our hopes 😢
Has anyone ever told you that YOU ARE HANDSOME AND I LOVE THOSE BLUE EYES
Haha thank you!!!
Thank you .. after my cataract surgery, I started taking this supplement, because of what I learned from you. Yes, wish I knew more about eyes when I was young. But thank God your video collection is here now. 👁️😊👀
That's great! Thank you for your kind words!
For us is late .I started taking supplements when problems occurred ( as a adult ) . It is miraculous discovery for future generation !
Agreed! But I still think its never too late.
Since the a age of 50 I do follow the right diet , take a supplements . I'm now 69. the problems I encountered at 50 ,they did not go away ,yet they didn't progress ☺👍@@DoctorEyeHealth
I need to be taking this now at my age 54 🙏...
Can you make a follow up video on what would be the best natural food sources of lutein and zeaxanthin and roughly how much one would have to eat to get a comparable amount found in supplements ? Thanks
Great suggestion! I will see what I can do!
what about Lutein eyedrop study?
Hello Allen your last video regarding best monthly disposable contacts came about 4 yrs ago...we now desperately need a new video on best monthly disposable contact lenses in 2024... please Allen 🧡🧡🧡
Hey I appreciate that! I will see what I can do! We do have a new monthly player that came out with some cool tech!
@@DoctorEyeHealth ....Thank you Dr. Joseph...😘😘
This explains the calm chill demeanor or the rabbits in my garden. Seriously, my former boss of a decade who is a Corneal guru used to highly suggest these supplements. Gotta be sure a supplement includes them as a lot of popular multis don’t contain them or are included in insignificant amounts.
Many multis do contain lutein in a laughable amount, like 1mg or even 0,1mg.
so glad u posted this and i watched it yesterday because i literally just had a patient come in today asking me what he should take and i said oooh it does not have the lutemax label
Excellent information.
Right!! Glad you think so.
Super interesting! Thank you for sharing this info!
My pleasure! Thanks for watching and sharing!
I think its healthier to consume natural foods than supplements. If kids r nt keen on green veges, try blueberries, goji berries wth d cereals, yogurt or ice cream
Agreed, I always encourage healthy whole foods first.
Thoughts on Seleniex eyebrow ointment being used to treat MGD while waiting for AZR MD 001?
Yet another supplement to add to my morning routine. The supplements are a meal unto themselves.
Haha it seems like it could be that way! I only take a few supplements throughout the day. Perhaps I should do a video on what I take??
can you make a video of what you take? Please 🙏
thank you 👍
Welcome 👍Thanks for leaving a comment!
can you make a video of what you take ? Please 🙏
Haha I’ve had a few people ask about that so yeah I can make a video on that!
Great for kids. Now how about people of other ages?
Hello
If I use Bio True solution with Clean Car Plus with RGP lenses, does it replace the use of GP solutions?
That's good to hear apart from I would have concerns about potentially synthetic supplements as they can hack otherwise normal synthesis pathways, and I'd have concerns about children eating kale as they would need strong peristalsis function. I choked a bit on kale once for no obvious reason other than I had been developing fatigue symptoms at the same time. Raw organic kale is my favourite food, for so many health reasons, although I often refrain from buying it at the same time. We should all be eating natural foods!! 😊
Well the Ingredient in lutien supplements come from marigold flowers! Pretty cool. But yes, I agree that prioritizing healthy Whole Foods should be first.
As always your videos are informative. Grateful for them.
Have you ever done a video on pool chlorine and bromine.? Swimming under water with eyes open? Any long terms effects?
Not yet! But chemical burns and chemical damage to the eye is a real thing. Perhaps I can look into doing a video on that subject. Thanks
Question, lutein ,and zeazanthin for an adult what would be a recommendation of amount ,and time of the day to take it ?
hey doc can u make a video on stem cell meibonian glands?
I will add it to the list!!
@@DoctorEyeHealth this need bad attention cos the glands die and we need new ones.
i heard even children as young as 7 are getting this issue
transitions gen S is out, could you please make a comparison video.
I'm glad you pointed out that the study was funded by big pharma.
A sample size of 60 is nowhere near enough to make definitive conclusions, furthermore it would be interesting to see the methodology used. Knowing big pharma, they probably hand selected the kids and picked the smartest (with best attainment and recent test eye results) to give the supplements to.
It would be great if a completely independent study was carried out with a bigger sample size.
Hey thanks, although I will point out it isn’t the Pharma industry. But the study was supplied with the supplements by the industry partner. But overall I agree, it would be ideal to see studies not funded by industry (but sadly sometimes hard to find) . Although the vast majority of research in lutien supports the findings of this study.
I remember being once in your clinic. I pretend to be there for an eye check but I just wanted to get checked by you thank god you were my doctor. It was my best day of life seeing your cold blue eyes.
Are you single or married?

Sir please suggest me regarding contact lenses..is it safe to use contact lenses and contact lenses vs laser eye surgery... which one is good.
Thank you
I have recently switched to Ocutein Brilliant with 25mg and also support minerals like zinc and copper.
how much zinc is in it, just curious.
@@DoctorEyeHealth 25mg Lutein, 3mg Zeaxantin, 20mg Fosfatidilcholin, 17mg Zinc, 1mg Copper, 255uq Vitamin A Palmitate, 200uq B9, 26ug Selen
Wow! I'm impressed.
For your education re:actual vegetables, fruits, etc... I actually have a neighbor who does not cook and has provided primary child care. Words from his mouth was a good breakfast was taking his child to McDonalds. That happened 4x a week. I offered this adult a tomato from my garden. He honestly Did Not Know he could wash it off and eat it. (I often eat tomatoes while I'm harvesting without washing them.) He said he was giving the tomato to his aunt as she might know how to use it. Really!? I though you got tomato slices at McDonalds on burgers. He should have at least remembered that.
I'm fearful offering kale, might be like offering a cross to a vampire. Are the poor working so many part time jobs they've become disassociated and don't have the time to interact with real food?
By the way among his jobs, he's a fitness trainer and takes supplements, protein, etc...
Moral of all of this. Please keep educating your viewers. We need this. Also are you a FACLM member? If not you should be. You are definitely on the cutting edge of eye health, facts and research.
Hey thank you for sharing that. Lifestyle medicine is a huge interest and focus of mine. I know of the ACLM but never knew I could register and join, so thanks for asking because I just looked it up and will see what I can do. Appreciate it.
Hello there I am 16 year old with an eye sight of -7.25 (cant see things clearly about 10cm far from me clearly) I am concerned about my eyes people keep telling me I am going to be blind so what should I do to prevent getting blind and get my eyes better ?
Good 👍
Haha thanks 👍
I'm in europe and have been trying to find any suplements with the lutemax 2020 mark on it but can't find any. Do you have any advice ?
Hmmm, well I know there are several brands that use the formulation but just don't advertise the name on the bottle. let me check and get back to you!
so, do you advise for adults? and if so, what dose amount do you recommend to adults? Thank you, Thank you for sharing!!!
Yes! Lots of research for benefits of lutein and zeaxanthin for adults. Most studies show somewhere between 10-20mg of lutein per day is most beneficial. Zeaxanthin is usually around 2-5mg but depends on the study. 📚
Hello I have a question that nobody wants to answer. I have a pair of frames 51-21-145 they broke, I want to salvage the lenses. I found the same frame identical to the one I have (same brand) the only difference is the (bridge size) mine are 21 the other are 19. If the lens width, arms, are all the same but the bridge is smaller, shouldn't the same lenses fit those frames? Please let me know. Thank you
Not necessarily, the lens wells are a different design all together. In addition to that, the pupillary distance will be different and you would be looking through the lenses about 1mm off in both eyes. Which if the prescription is low, may not make a huge difference, but it wouldn’t technically not be the correct prescription anymore. Hope that helps. Cheers
Hey Guys which lens brand u use on ur Eye Spectacles/Glasses?
I have many! The lenses I am wearing right now are from Neurolens but the one brand im looking forward to trying in the near future are some new Zeiss lenses.
Mine is Nikon Asaphire Pure Blue UV ECC hope so it's a good lens
@DoctorEyeHealth Hoping to get another update video, content regarding neurolens on youtube is really lacking. Considering it and wondering if you still think they are best for eye strain.
brother what is the treatment of ratina pigmantation becouse my little brother cannot sea in night if they have any treatment please tell me in next video please pic my queasion
one other product I hope you have time to look into, Dr Christopher's Herbal Eyebright - Eye Formula . I've used the drops as a tincture, but not as an eye wash - though many people used it directly in their eye rather than mix it with water into a wash - the instructions are very clear, but people are.. well.. anyway... - It needs to be mixed bc it has cayenne pepper in it, I'm sure this is an old time holistic medicine, but wondering what the pepper actually does?
While I am not currently familiar with this formula, pepper products contain capsaicin, which is a know irritant to the eye can often cause pain, burning and redness to the eyes. There are some medical uses for it, paradoxically low dose capsaicin as been used for helping with pain due to post herpetic neuralgia. Ultimately though, I will need to research it a bit. Thanks for sharing!
@@DoctorEyeHealth When I first read about this I thought pepper in the eye that can't be right, but there it is - must something old in eye health, I can't imagine anyone putting pepper in the eye without good reason., and this companies reputation is pretty staller when it comes to natural cures.
Hi Dr. Allen, I am legally blind in one eye due to amblyopia when I was young. Is there any hope to get full vision in that eye again? I can see most things in that eye, but not clearly enough to see at a reliable vision. Glasses don't help that eye. My doctor said no. Because he said the brain basically turned that eye "off" because we had surgery to align the eyes to late.
I am someone that never likes to never, but it's true that with deep seeded amblyopia, it can be very difficult to retrain the brain to appreciate better vision once someone has aged past 8-12 years old. There are isolated cases of people slightly improving their vision but it may never get back to what your other normal eye sees.
@@DoctorEyeHealth Hi Dr. Allen, Thank you for your thoughts! One other question. How do I choose a great doctor to perform cataract surgery? All doctors look like good doctors on their own website. Being blind in one eye makes choosing the best surgeon very important. I'm in Boca Raton Florida.
@@thatfirst9423choose a surgeon who does the procedure frequently, like hundreds per year. Not the surgeon who does it only occasionally. You can inquire about their complication rates. Also ask your optometrist or ophthalmologist.
I take 2 bills everyday nothing changed why?
Hello doctor
I am 25 year old and having-18 diapter glasses in both eyes my OCT report shows that their is inflammation in my retina, how can i cure it any suggestions? Please doctor i am so worried about my condition Please help me😢😢
Doctor anything else out there for people for eye floaters instead of the V surgery and laser?
There is the eye floater supplement. ua-cam.com/video/E6XE1BL8Yzk/v-deo.htmlsi=nIv5yRsamj3Yzv-7
Check out Vitamin K, there are studies showing it can be helpful for floaters. I used vitamin K for my Central Serous Retinopathy. It is an overlooked vitamin

@@DoctorEyeHealth thank you!
How does this supplement compare to eating Kale and Green leafy vegetables? Wouldn't that be a more meaningful study for parents?
Love this question. So in previous meta analysis studies on dietary changes, sadly, they found most people don't get much more then 2mg / day of lutein in the diet. And most studies find you need at least 10-20 mg to have clinically meaningful benefits.
@@DoctorEyeHealth Thanks - appreciate the answer. Appreciate your efforts on this channel too. For example, eating ground Flax seed improved my watery eyes (surprisingly), then I realised I had seen a video of yours on Dry Eyes that explained the phenomena for me. Thank you for that. lutein makes my stomach hurt
Interesting! Perhaps it’s the formulation it’s in or maybe a sensitivity to the capsule? Did you take it with food?
@@DoctorEyeHealth it hurt less with food, but anyways it hurts, "VitaminLife" Lutein Plus.. and its the only pill wich hurts my stomach, wierd

Wondering how we have survived without all this. When in reality all we need to be most healthy is to switch back to hyper carnivore eating.
The best way to lie is to blend it with truth, hey doc?
I don’t care about anyone else’s opinions, I see you. You know I’m right, deny it all you want.
“Trust the study conducted by supplement’s makers”
Pathetic!!
Sorry you are feeling this way. It is absolutely important to read studies carefully and see where there could be influence. While the producers of the lutein formulation did supply the formulation for the study, they otherwise had no other hand in the study or it's outcomes. But when looking at the broader landscape of studies on carotenoid supplementation, the findings are in agreement.
