I've gotten more enjoyment out of watching you with that thing than I ever had with it. 🤣 I am glad my old gear could make someone happy and I hope it serves you well for a long time. You, the dogs and the family stay well over there.
@@RedBranchBushcraft I would love to see it, mate. I will get a big smile every time I see you out with it. I should have just sent you both of mine and you could have let the dogs have one of their own. 😆
I was in the infantry when they first introduced these. I still have mine, all these years later. I ditched the bags, I use Wiggy's bags now (lighter and warmer). The MSS system was revolutionary when it came out. Being infantry, we never set up tents-sometimes, temp shelter with ponchos, but that was it. This system, you simply flopped it on the ground, crawled in, and slept. I woke up many, many nights in the rain, sleet, snow-and was fine. The one complaint I did have, and why I switched bags, was the conduction from the snaps. Here, it gets COLD in the winter. The snaps conducted the cold from the outside, right to you on the inside. It may seem insignificant looking at it, but I can tell you, it drops the temp of the bag about 15 degrees F. Not good when its below zero. With the Wiggys bags, there are no snaps, so its not an issue. Enjoy!! My favorite camo too. We call it "God's plaid" :)
I spent many a cold night using this system back in the day. It worked then and I still use the system today bushcraftong in the Allegheny Mountains in Pennsylvania.
During my time in the US Army, this is probably one of the best pieces of issued kit along with the rest of the sleep system. As soon as my contract was up, I made sure to contact some old quartermaster friends for a bivvy bag for personal use. The one I currently have is old gen like the one shown in the vid here, but I have hiked and slept in that bivvy through blizzards and torrential downpours, while remaining almost entirely dry. I cannot say enough how essential this piece of kit is in my outdoor pursuits.
Hey, I’m glad somebody finally talks about the size of these sleeping bags ! I’m 6’5, and have rather large shoulders, do you think I will be fine even with the two down sleeping bags ? Cheers !
Its good to see you so happy with that wonderful gear, I hope you will enjoy it for many years to come...I ordered a bivy bag on ebay a few days ago, not as good as yours, but should work good enough for now, survival gear of all kinds people are buying up all over..Merry Christmas to you and pets.
I'm kind of lucky. I have a brand new, never been used patrol and intermediate sleeping bag. A bivy that's been used once. A new poncho, and a liner that looks new. I also have an A+ Dutch Hooped Bivy. I'm in surplus heaven.
I believe there is an x long bag but not many. Love this bag as I am a side sleeper and the next gen bivy is a mummy bag which is too narrow for most side sleepers. Extra room in the boot box for GI's to keep their boots on while they sleep. Congratulations!!!
Not having the honor to serve as you did, I can only say that it must be a civilian sales tactic/line then. Thank you so much for your service!@@duffelbagdrag
Thanks for the videos...just got mine and did my first run with it for a winter camp...got down to 3 degrees F at night. Threw my sleeping bag inside and was quite comfortable. I was leery of being too constricted but all in all I was very surprised at the room I had. I am 5'11' and about 195 with 20lbs of that being good Scotch Macrae hair😁. Highly recommend. Mcguire army and navy is a good source as well. Mine had a 2" tear in it and instead of having me send it back they just told me to keep it and refunded all of my money.
Hi Wooly super that you have a complete set now. .I have 2 sets but without the bivy...I'm using the Dutch m90 with a zipper (they come with no zipper) or UK bivy.. still hoping to the US bivy for cheap..I currently bought a US woodland goretex rain jacket...love it! ...greetings from the Netherlands
I love my woodland MSS bivy! Actually, I have two and each of my older children have the ACU version. The ACU version is quit a bit lighter than the woodland and packs down smaller. I don't think the woodland bivy is lighter than my Canadian bivys, which are comparable to the British (from what I can tell) except my newer one actually has a waterproof zipper added. The heaviest bivy I have is my Carinthia made Belgian army hooped bivy, which is identical to the Dutch but in the fun loving Belgian camo. That was a rare catch!
Do you think i can fit my Thermarest Xtherm NXT mummy pad that is 196x64x7.6cm inside the bivy plus sleepingbag an my self (not a big person 172cm and 70kg)?
@@RedBranchBushcraft Awesome i getting one :) I bought the Snugpak Special Forces Bivy with hopes to fit that pad inside but it was way to small. Do dont have that Snugpak Special Forces one and can compare the two?
Hi bud you might be interested in a sleep system I've just ordered which is the russian ratnik sleep system , it can handle temp of -18c combine this with the ratnik shelter/tarp for what I hope will be a comfortable all round d sleep system
Hi I have the us sleep system and I find it way too small I carnt get comfy with it is the British version any larger or are they about the same thanks
Of the top of my head I'm going to say that the British system is smaller, but I would probably need to lay them side by side and measure them to be exact
@@RedBranchBushcraft iv just had a quick go in mine if i lay flat theres no room at the sides and i cant stand not being able to move my legs im thinking the mummy type isnt for me 🤣
@@RedBranchBushcraft Makes sense, interested in your opiniom if/when you get round to it... to expand the question, would it be worthwhile if one already had the MSS to get in the trouble to change to the USMC? Cheers man
jeepers man, that another great question, you know i recorded a british army bivy vs mmss bivy cover video today, might be an idea to do one comparing the mmss with the usmc
I know this is later, but were I to choose, I would likely go with the newer USMC one. Simply because it has the netting and hoop to pull it off your face. Many of us that were issued these original bags, sewed a loop of 550 cord into the front lip of the hood, so we could suspend it off our faces when sleeping.
