As someone who lives in Puerto Rico I am extremely worried about this hurricane season. I really can't handle another hurricane as strong as Maria or as horrible as Fiona. If another one were to hit us hard it will probably be the thing that makes me leave my home and move over to mainland USA. My body and mind really can't handle being out of power for 6 months and now even more considering that I am living on my own.

The weather will get worse before it gets better so if you rely on electricity, I would recommend moving. Florida is really not better, but Atlanta does pretty well weather-wise if you want to stay somewhat close.

Since you live on your own. Have you made sure to be prepare for a disaster? How much of a buffer of food and water you have. Cause you know, even if whatever town you're in isn't hit hard physically. All we need is to power to go out to make buying groceries hell. On the food department I'm always good, since I'm use to be prepare for an emergency all year around. with over a month worth of supply. Remember PR could be hit with an Earthquake at all time. So waiting for hurricane season to get ready is a mistake many people make in the Island. Or not having cash. For Maria I knew of many people that did have money, but trapped on their banks. So they still couldn't buy food out from the place that were still operating with gas.
And the constant push for everything digital, when the island is clearly not ready. Even without hurricanes it wouldn't take much for the power grid to go out. Or the internet is having a fit and ATHs don't work. Although I also didn't have power or water for Gorge on the 90s. I think it was easier because everything then still used lot of paper. So many places were functioning as normal, even without power. Plus we weren't as hooked on internet, computers/smartphones and so on. So it was less noticeable.
And if you live in apartments that don't let you have a real gas stove, make sure to always have a couple of those coleman tiny tanks. And a lot of candles. And save the gas for real cooking or heating. I would take the rack of my toaster oven, lift it on some cans, put candles under it. And that was enough to warm stuff like Chef Boyardee and other canned stuff. Guess it'll depend how much of a picky eater you are.
But things are generally different now. Been from the 80s growing poor, I didn't have my own TV until the late 90s. So power outage didn't meant much. (for my particular case only medical machines were a problem, but that's a special case) Plus the outsides were a lot nicer. But now, even poor people in caserios have TV, gaming consoles, internet, smartphones. Not having power does impact people's daily life. And love it or hate it. Gaming keep kids/teens usually sane and safe.
And after the lock downs, I'm not sure how well PR would handle another Maria event.
But yeah, you should try to always be ready for the worst. Earthquakes don't have a season. Or some lizard stepping on some power grid cable LOL

Too be fair it is a pretty good strategy for evacuation purposes. If you're in an area where you could be severely affected by a hurricane it's best to leave as soon as you can so that everyone in the area also has a chance to evacuate. In Florida we aren't that scared. But we don't flood like you guys do.
I've fled 5 hurricanes here simply to play safe, protect me, dog and campervan and an excuse for a road trip to visit places I've never been.
We had a pretty bad tropical storm here I couldn't flee. So I decided to park at a car wash and protected my van and especially to not flip. Stayed there for 3 nights until it was all over. My van was still rocking and luckily no tornadoes, my biggest fear.
      What I experienced, I can't imagine experiencing a hurricane.

That's because we have been stuck in this backwards garbage pattern all summer long where the storms all go to the east coast instead of here on the west coast like they're supposed to. Since May 15th we have had our normal SE flow pushing up against the west coast sea breeze a grand total of about 2 days. The whole rest of the time it has been Southwest to West winds or very weak steering winds pushing everything deep inland or over to the East Coast. I have never in my entire life seem such an anomalous pattern be so ridiculously dominant.

Exactly what I said since Jan/Feb that this hurricane season was going to be worse than usual and even when everyone was saying it shouldn’t be, I was sticking to my gut feeling on it. I really feel like this year will be one people will remember..... just as I thought our severe weather would run behind this year in KS and start in July and run later than usual. Which it has been picking up. We’ve been under several storm watches and warnings and even tornados warnings lately. This year has definitely been an odd one but I do honestly believe things are going to continue to pick up and hurricane season I pray that everyone isn’t waiting until it happens before they start preparing because the time is NOW....

Ryan I’ve only commented a couple times on your videos over the past couple of years but I so appreciate your forecasting and the way that you guys handle being on the ground covering major weather events. This year has been so hot down here it really reminds me of the summer that we had hurricane Charley in August of 2003. That summer was very hot and drier than usual. And then after Charlie we got Frances and Jeannie. So I’m thinking that maybe if it’s going to be a very active season maybe that’s why I’m still waiting on insurance and legal issues after losing my house to hurricane Ian. Living in a tiny trailer is cramped but if by ‘chance’ we get hit again this year, my house is already a mess and at least I won’t have a rebuilt place to get damaged.
Whatever happens God is in control but I’m grateful for you guys for all you do before during and after storms. Thank you so much! God bless
