This is a video about 5 things that you probably didn't know about motorcycles.

When I purchased my 2016 Triumph Thruxton, earlier this year, I had a license plate frame made for it with the inscription; "Old dog...New trick" only because I am 62 years of age which makes me an old dog who owns a new very fun motorcycle and with watching this video it is prove that there is always something to learn...cheers.

Most modern, 4 stroke motorcycles use more fuel than small cars, and more tires, but when you factor you can drive with 4 people in the smallest car, cars are much more efficient and cheaper to run. You really only see efficiency with tiny bikes or scooters.

okleydokley many motorcycles are very high performance machines that were designed for fuel efficient commuting. A better comparison would be between a super sport and a sports car
I have no idea if my bike is more or less efficient than my car and I don't care. Definitely not enough to ride as conservatively as I drive to test this. I'd be fine with a binary throttle. On/off.
I have a Jetta and an FZ 07 and let me assure you, the FZ 07 is far more fuel efficient and cheaper to maintain. I love commuting in the summer because I spend so much less on gas, and the Jetta is already a pretty fuel efficient car

Meh two strokes aren't really known for being economical
Yes, you are absolutely right. But as i said, this honda NSR is just a 50cc motorcycle, which means that it is very similar to a 125cc 4 stroke engine. Even the fuel consumption is very similar betwin these 2 kinds of motorcycles. Cheers.
2 stroke just need more oil this what i knwo about two stokes , and are more powerfull

exactly, I had a yz250 dirt bike. it was a 250cc 2 stroke engine and my buddy had a ktm exc525, a bike with a 500ish 4 stroke engine and when we rode together he would burn less than a quarter of the fuel I would even though his engine was more than twice the size of mine, and his bike and his body were much heavier

I believe the term "Cafe" was first used in a "depreciative tone" by truckers that shared the cafes and roads with the riders. It was derived from the the original CAFF, and stating the fact that everyone had a racing bike, but used it only to show on the cafés.

not even close. They were named cafe racers because in England and Italy in the 60s people used to race between popular cafes across towns.

Love the sound sync portion of this video. I've noticed it while riding with similar bikes to mine. You hear the pulse of the revs and feel the sound pressure.

as a mechanic, with a certification, the disc brakes work better. The problem you explain is because it is a cable type disc brake. if you want better braking, convert it to hydraulic. the drum brake surface area doesn't matter, it's the pressure it can put on the disc or drum surface without locking the tire.
most bikes these days have 2 front disc brakes AND ABS, which I admit isn't always a good thing, because now you're going to have a generation of new riders who rely on ABS
Double leading shoe drums have a 'self energizing' effect, so, all other factors being equal, they have better stopping power...in theory. But as with most things in life its not that simple. The hydraulic-over-disk also multiplies the rider's 'input' so this helps a disk have better stopping power and a more linear feel. Also, disc brakes on a bike are self cooling, AND self drying, which is a good thing!
Drums are prone to locking, the physics of the rotating drum and the drum brake pads make them self locking....discs are harder to lock. Drums 0 - Discs 10! ;-)
Cole Lomont Besides, in drum brakes, lesser portion of brake leather touches the drum bcz only ends are lifted on applying brake resultantly upper circle provide resistance where as ends do not creat that much resistant where as in disc brake disc is gripped from both sides covering more area of disc as compared to drum, its my opinion
Shamsul Arfeen when a drum brake is applied, yes, only the upper corner moves, but the entire pad touches the drum. It pivots on the star/slack adjuster. If it only used the upper corners, don't you think companies would only put linings on the top then? Also, if drum brakes are so good, why are 90%of vehicles made with disc? Disc has more stopping power, and more reliability, in half the weight and size. Look at all major race cars, and trucks that use disc. Why do all the classic car fanatics want me to switch their drum brakes out for disc at work? If drums are really that good, why are discs replacing them faster now then ever?
I always loved the sound while riding in a group of inline 4 sport bikes. I'll purposely ride in the back to hear that reverberant sound when we take off all at once. Come on springtime.
I think a lot of cost comparisons change by region, and this one specifically by vehicle. I had a Ducati 696...even driving it like every street was a racetrack I got close to 40 mpg. At the same time, I had a Hyundai Accent 4--door, even driving it like an old lady I was lucky to reach 35 mpg. It cost me $63 a month to insure the Hyundai with just liability, full coverage insurance with bodily injury up to $25,000 on the Ducati was $59 a month. Broke a timing belt on the Hyundai, it was $4,700+; broke a timing belt on my Ducati, $375+.
So both gas and insurance were cheaper on the bike, as well as major services. I sold the Hyundai and got a JEEP Wrangler. Still the same 30-35 mpg, insurance is $67 a month.
The only place I found the Hyundai Cheaper than the Ducati was when it comes time to replace the tires. All 4 tires and installed for $192, Ducati 2 Pirelli tires and install for $510.
Wow. The insurance cost in your country seem to be extremely expensive. Here in Portugal, the usual insurance cost is about 130 Euros/Year. Thank you my friend for sharing your perspective. :) Cheers.

I have experienced synchronization with many types of vehicles and my motorcycles. It can happen when your engine is exactly twice the rpms of the other machine, in my case, a garbage truck. I was on SV1000s.

In the London idiom it's always caff. Not cafe, how they are spelt. As you likely know? The two caffs popularized were the Ace and the Busy Bee. Both original locations are now gone. Although they are replacements. Originally one in Watford by-pass the other near Neasden. The race was along the North Circular Road. Never stopped for red lights and sometimes would pass between groups headed in the opposite direction. While I was not a participant, I owned motorcycles then. Mostly those races were before my time. I used to pass the Ace headed towards a fishing hole in Union Canal. No matter, the time of day. There would be a parking lot full of cycles and trucks or lorries in the British vernacular. Another place was at Golders Green at the Dugout or Kilburn, near Brondesbury, as too on the Chelsea bridge where there was a coffee/tea and eats stand.. The so-called look and dimensions that bike builders use today, were not really the look of most of those racers. Sure, the clip on bars and engine modifications. Sometimes a racing tank. Disposable income was not really there, for most in the late '50's or early sixties. It was late 1970's before a lot of that changed. Finding those parts was always a challenge then. Most parts were stocked through individual dealers of whichever marques they were stocking parts for.
In the mid '70's I worked as a machinist and a friend who was mostly interested in fast cars would have me grind down the face of the motor head to achieve a higher compression. Doing the ports was not something I felt comfortable with.

The Japanese motorcycle company Bridgestone had bikes with " rotary shift" that started at neutral and went straight through the gear selection ending back at neutral. And depending on which way you worked the shifter, you could go from neutral right into either first or top gear. And as far as the engine sync sound, a friend and I had identical CB-750 Honda's, and when riding side by side, we would get results all the time. And is was a neat sound. Disc brakes got their start on bikes for the safety aspect. They were used up front because they didn't have the nasty habit of "locking up" as drum brakes were. Not a fun end to your ride, having the front brake lock! Good thought provoking video, thanks!
Also, practical application of Neutral between 1st and 2nd gear is when stopping the bike instead of going through 1st gear you can stop directly from 2nd gear, which is nice because you don't get the knock of the 1st gear drag (like my VT1100 ACE does)

As a Brit, I just want to clarify the term cafe' as opposed to 'caff'. In working class uk a cafe' is pronounced 'caff', and certainly a true Londoner would. even thou it is spelt the same. And it's still the case for many people . I would use one or other pronunciations depending on whom I'm with and location.

I've experienced the sound synchronization of my bike plus my friend's identical; a pair of Ducati 748s. What's more fun is traveling side by side with obstacles alongside us such as a long stone wall. You will get a very low frequency reverberation of the engine sound while they are very slightly out of sync.
I get better gas mileage from my 68 Corolla than I did with my 1100 Yamaha. Tires are cheaper, repairs are cheaper.
Motorcycles used to be economical, until the manufacturers finally figured it out...now a bike is hardly any cheaper than a car plus all the gear you need to wear.

Spot on,over here in England no one calls them "caffay" racers (people would laugh at that pronunciation), always "caff" 😉 Surely one of the main reasons for using disc brakes rather than drums is ease and cost of manufacturing = bigger profit margins. Interesting video,thankyou. 👍👍

I first stumbled over the term «café racer» in a book about the AJS and Matchless postwar models by Roy Bacon published 1991 in Geat Britain.

The spelling in English, including in the UK, is "cafe", not "caff". It's The Ace Cafe, not The Ace Caff (see the spelling on the sign at the nine minute mark of this video). This means that Cafe Racer is correct and that this is solely an issue of pronunciation. In the UK, unlike, for example, Canada and the U.S., there are people who pronounce cafe as caff, but it certainly isn't everyone, and as a pronunciation it is dying. If some Brits want to pronounce cafe as caff, that's their business, but that choice of pronunciation has nothing to do with the spelling of the word nor with its pronunciation elsewhere.
Tends to be the cock a knees who say caff.
That were good piece of Info share. Though i would like to mention 2 things here.
1. You compared a Small 2 Stroke bike to a car. 2 Strokes have always been heavy on maintenance. A smaller displacement 4 stroke machine would most certainly be less on running cost. We have loads of those here in India. A 100cc 4 stroke bike is cheap as chips to run.
2. The Drum Brakes are surely powerful and i agree that i like their feel and bite on the rare tire of my bike. But they cant hold a candle to the advanced ventilated disc brakes. I have ridden rare disc brake bike and absolutely wish to have them, especially equipped with ABS.
Again would like to say that your video gave me loads of info i didnt have and it was a good learning curve. This is me shearing my experience.

But maybe i was not clear enough about some things.
Remember that the Honda NSR has only 50cc, which means that the fuel consumption is very similar to a 4 stroke 125 cc.
I have a Honda Cb 125 B6(4 strokes), and the fuel consumption is very similar to the Honda NSR 50.
On the other hand, the engine oil of the Honda Cb 125 have to be changed every 1000 km.
My main intention about the comparison between a motorcycle vs diesel, was only to demonstrate that sometimes a small motorcycle is not so economical as most people thing. But only sometimes and in certain circumstances. :)
I agree with everything you said about Disk brakes. But in this video, i just wanted to clarify that the main issue about Drum brakes, is only the overheating problem.

Also some motorcycles (Jawa, Simson) have neutral between every gear - you don't have to downshift all the way down to get neutral. Or have first gear up and others down.
My first 2 bikes were 2 strokes. T250 & a GT 550. Majority of the rest were 4 strokes.

Bem vindo de volta amigo Victor, sentimos sua falta na semana passada, sempre com seu videos surpreendentes e desta vez com informações muito interessantes, eu não tinha ideia que Café Racer na verdade é "Caff" Racer, e comparação de custo de motos pequenas, eu tenho uma CG 125 cc (Cafe Racer) é muito confiável, porém gasta um pouco mais de gasolina, alterei motor para 190 cc, talvez por isso que gasta gasolina.

Neutral being the bottom setting goes back to the old hand shifters being converted to foot shifters back in the 1930's when foot shifts first appeared in Britain. Still some oddball shifting patterns around though. For instance all Jawa, CZ and Yedzi 2 strokes have the pattern: 1 N 2 3 N 4 shift arrangement with optional conventional or inverse patterns determined by which guide plate the rider has fitted.True circuit racing bikes and true enduro machines used in events like the ISDT have "Inverse" boxes where the rider clicks up for first gear and clicks down to shift up. This style of box prevents the dreaded "missed a gear / false neutral" nightmare when blasting out of a corner on a track and on off road at the breakneck speeds enduro riders hit (way faster than MX riders) it is easier to shift down to change up a gear when stood up than with a conventional "1 down & all up box".Another shifter contraption seldom seen or used by riders away from competition machines (endure, GP and drag racing) is the use of a "slick shifter". Only road bikes once used or that still use this are Jawa, CZ, Yedzi and (for 1963 only) Triumph. Honda used a copied and licenced (from Jawa) system on the famous Honda Cub series (C50, C70 and C90).With a slick shifter the movement of the gear lever to change gear also disengages and re-engages the clutch without the rider having to pull the clutch lever. It also allows for heavier strength clutch springs to be used that without the slick shifter would soon make the rider's fingers, hand and wrist ache. Useful when dealing with high torque output motors utilising a light weight small diameter clutch basket. In this instance it is more of a combined "foot assisted" clutch pull.

Contudo, como referiu, já é tarde para atribuir a designação Caff Racer, uma vez que praticamente todo o coletivo de amantes Café Racer se identifica com esta última designação. No meu caso, espero ansiosamente pelos 24 anos, pois acompanho esta tendência à muito tempo e quando puder com certeza cavalgarei com uma destas máquinas pelas estradas do norte, um destes cavalos com rodas e aí sim, saberei o que é a liberdade. On your third point, not all bikes have gears arranged 1,N,2,3,4,5,etc. Bikes that don't use user operated clutches can be arranged N,1,2,3,etc. where I live(within the USA), a Hond cz50 and golden monkey is road legal, it is considered a moped, but it is still a motorcycle. It has the latter gear arrangement. Also, having neutral between 1 and 2 does not guarantee the rider does not unintentionally shift to neutral. I have ridden many types of bikes and not kicking the lever hard enough can have this consequence. This can also happen between other gears but it is very rare.
Definitely a time of waiting that was worth it. Sometimes we have false ideas and myths about motorcycles that it is good to contrast them with data. It is funny that everything is related to the gringos although I think in general is good because it is a society that maintains statistical and analysis systems to prove their point of view. That we know firsthand because of the long relationship of love-hate that Mexicans have with that country (myself included), but it is certainly very practical and sure that the change of gears have that way. I had heard the term "caff" on the lips of some original British rockers in interviews or programs related to the Cafe Racer bikes, but I do not pay much attention and now I discover that in the development of this style is very important, although as you say is little likely to be imposed to all because many of the fans are not from the old island country and even our mother tongue is not English. By the way two strokes bikes are la neta del planeta and as information my Bajaj Pulsar 200ns is very economical its maintenance. Saludos amigo

There is one thing that i didn't explain about the maintenance costs with small motorcycles. The price of spare parts for small motorcycles, is also related with the popularity of this kind of motorcycles in the contry where we live.
And i have to say that in Portugal, this kind of motorcycles is not so popular as it was 20 years ago, which means that today most spare parts are relatively expensive compared with cars.
But i recognize that if we ride them without any exaggerated speeds, they will be economical.:) Saludos.

about drum vs disk brakes can I add some very very important feature?
disk brakes are much safer because they are better dosable in power where as the drumm graps a bit more rigid and isn't that dosable because it is more dependable to wear and accumulated dirt inside plus fading during braking because it has less cooling as the disk who acts like a giant cooling surface
Plus: if a spring snaps (it happened om my honda camino) you could be killed.
the disk also acts like a vacuum cleaner for dust, due to centrifugal forces it swings them all out of the way where as the drumm... they accumulate inside .

My main intention, was only to clarify that the main problem about drum brakes, is the overheating, and not the lack of braking power as most people think.
But here is another interesting fact which i discovered very recently.
90% of heavy trucks still have drums brakes.

i have TOMOS APN 6 2 stroke moped (5 gears ) 49cc from 1986 !!! I never changed anything on it , only oil in gear box .

Discs dissipate heat better - that's reason No.1, since when you stop from light speeds a few times in a row - you convert a ton of kinetic energy into heat, and it must be either stored, or dissipated (modern motorcycles travel at much higher speeds on average, so more heat must be dealt with from breaking).
Almost all inexpensive motorcycles are really more economical than cars, since how much a car costs? And a bike? You get the idea (but that's only true when the car is ridden almost all the time without the passengers. otherwise the car can be more economical).
The shifter works that way because the selector drum in the gearbox is cut that way, you can cut it anyway you want, even something crazy like 3-1-6-N-2-5-4. So yeah, it's a safety feature, not a technical one.
Sound sync? Never thought of that, but everything can be synced if it can emit sound waves at the same frequencies. But it sure does sound cool. Good job achieving it and capturing it on video!
And the cafe racer... Well, it only resembles caff racers, but technically speaking - it's a different kind of bike. There is not a single caff racer being produced right now, since the main idea of these bikes were speed, but what speed you can get from a 60hp engine or so? So when someone calls a modern bike a cafe racer - they are right, since its a type of bike invented by companies to capitalize on nostalgia.

Disc brakes are usually more powerful than drum brakes. If it isn't powerful then put better pads on it.
Concerning gasoline usage, most motorcycles drink less gas than cars and that's what most people are thinking about when they ask how economical it is.

Drum brakes with two "cams" instead of one also work much better. My 100cc has only one cam and doesn't have a strong front brake. Drum brakes have a lot of surface area but not much pressure per square millimeter, whereas disk brakes have little surface area but a lot of pressure. The goal is to have the highest amount of friction.

Good question. Not only British bikes, some Italian and American motorcycles had the gear lever on the right as well.

I use this "robotic" voice created by software, because i'm Portuguese, and my bad english accent (and voice), can ruin the documentary character that i like for my videos. I already tried a real american voice in one of my videos, but things didn't worked as i expected. Curiously, the robotic voice sounds very good for all non english natives. Cheers.

hi racertv the word caff comes from the "lazy" slang way us British say Cafe for example if you wanted to meet a friend for a coffee you would say "do you want to meet at the Caff"
