    Recent I found that pushing the elbow UP is the key. Exactly what is addressed in this video. There are many tutorials for shooting skills, but few of them put emphasis on motion of elbow, which I think is the most key to achieve good shooting. Best video for shooting practice. Just do as she said: Pushing the elbow up, not out. Everything becomes so easy.

    • @julzallender
      @julzallender  7 років тому +12

      Yes! You bring up such a valid point and a point that is seldom taught but so important. The shot does become so much easier when you start to push your elbow up and you get so much more accuracy.

    Our basketball coach (I'm in 7th grade) sent us to your channel to watch your shooting videos. I'm actually really impressed!! You did really great. You helped me improve my shooting. Thanks!

    • @julzallender
      @julzallender  8 років тому +12

      Awesome! I am glad she sent you hear and I am very happy it helped you improve your shooting.
      Are you working with someone? This is the best way in the long run. Find another player who has the same drive as you do or Mom or Dad, and let them coach you after watching my video. If a player is always thinking about their own motions because they are coaching themselves they will not advance past a certain point. I call this shooters hell. It is very frustrating and unsuccessful. You need someone watching you and coaching you so that your attention is on the basket and maybe one thing and the coach corrects what you did wrong. Even then the person who is coaching you can hold you back with their lack of understanding of the proper shooting form even after they have have watched my video. That's why I offer a shot analysis, if you do that I then tell you what you need to change and who ever you are working with can make sure you are doing those things. And in a very real sense you are being coached by me.
      Go to my website at www.courtsidewithjulz.com/
      Click on Programs and Shot Analysis is an option.

    I know this is 12 years old now, but I've watched a few videos this week and this has been the best one. Simple and easy to follow instructions and explanations.
    I can shoot pretty good because I played like crazy as a kid. It's been 20 years since I've shot any hoops, but my 8yo daughter wanted to start playing basketball, so we've been going to the Y. I got right back into the rhythm of things and my skills are pretty darned on point for a 41yo dude who hasn't picked up a basketball in forever. Keeping in shape with various other sports and activities I'm sure helped.
    But i didnt really know how to teach the mechanics of shooting. This video broke down the mechanics awesomely. Other videos showed me how to teach the kiddo basic drills and stuff. We watched this video together right before going to the Y tonight, and she walked onto the court and made two shots in a row! Then she continued to be far better than shenhas the last few nights. She was pumped!
    Thank you nice blonde lady! I hope you're doing well nowadays.

    It’s still in use, judging by the comments, and knowing that there are MANY people like me who have no idea how to play basketball. I have a “mini tournament” tomorrow, don’t know how to play, and I’m nervous, I’ve been searching up many UA-cam videos and this one has been one of the most helpful.
    Hoping to win, or to at least improve. I’ll wish my future self luck, lmao.

    Thanks for the video. My son is 9 and this is his first year playing basketball and he doesn't know what to do. Usually his dad takes him to practice but I went yesterday and he barley got to practice and learn anything because the coach didn't have help. So purchased my son a basketball and tomorrow at practice I will walk him through this video. This is the basics he really needs and she did step by step so I can be able to teach him. Hopefully tomorrow he gets his posture right. She said a lot of things I didn't know especially about moving your hand on the ball by the air pocket and bend and move in one motion. How to catch the ball and 2 step, then move your hand, bend, shoot. I'm going to re-watch to make sure I have it down pack for him. I know he won't start in the games but once he gets this down he should be good. Thank you

      Jade Swann Actually people will shoot better with their undominant hand,since they are more careful of strenght and angles they use.

    • @TaliRT
      @TaliRT 9 років тому +5

      Whatever feels more comfortable. If you feel more comfortable with a certain hand it is probably your "dominant hand" or you haven't practiced at all normally. It is not uncommon to write/use a certain hand for every day things, but use the other hand for athletics. Both my parents do that. So your left hand can be your "dominant" writing hand and your right can be your "dominant" athletic hand.

      Yes a quick hop step is quicker and can be correct in different situations. Great point.

    Great instructional video! All of the elements are covered. We have found in the past 5 years that optimum learning is achieved when instruction starts from the beginning of the shot from starting our instruction with getting your feet and hands set first, then going through each element of the shot as the shot form progresses to release and follow through.

    • @julzallender
      @julzallender  8 років тому

      Thank you! Yes you bring up great and very important teaching points. That is also how I have had success teaching players how to shoot. It's then increasing their development after that at a fast rate and getting them to be able to shoot a high percentage in game situations.

      Hello Coach Julia, I like to say thanks. I enjoy watching your technique/s in shooting a basketball. I am really grateful to your unselfish act of sharing the talent you have... The elbow and the way I hold the ball made a great improvement on my shooting...I am not playing basketball (at my age)but it is my way of having an exercise (just free shooting) in our garage...We might have different style in holding the ball and stance, but what I always emphasizing in teaching kids is that you can improve your shooting with this phrase: "Practicing the correct ones makes perfect". Again, I would like to say thank you. I love this game much...

    • @julzallender
      @julzallender  8 років тому

      Hi! I am glad I could help you. And yes practice a perfect form shot is what makes one perfect. Also watching information over and over again helps one to gain a larger understanding of it all. We have our players watch these videos and then practice and then watch the video and then practice. They get better and better each time. Also my website has shooting workouts at www.courtsidewithjulz.com.

      If you are having problems applying what you are learning on the court here is what you do. First thing is go back to the part of your shot you feel like you really have down and continue to practice this point a little bit more. Then gradually move to the next step and practice that point until you are able to do that with great confidence. All that is happening is that you are moving too quickly through the progressions. I am going to be releasing some more shooting videos that will give you more drills you can do in sequence.
      Keep working at it!

      That's great!
      Click on Programs and the Shot Analysis is an option.
