    When I 1st watched this video, I thought what is this guy teaching with this sway, that is crazy. Yet when it comes to basketball shooting I am willing to try in order to improve shooting. At first I was like this is not working, but after about 30 days of working at it, I can tell a big difference in how relaxed I am with this. I now shoot quicker and with less effort, thanks Coach.

      Awesome. I was the same way, and I'm way too old to be tinkering with my shot. But I started using it and it made everything so much smoother, it's crazy. Keep it up! And if u hop, make sure it's very small, like 2 inches...

      +TheCristeo Not a coach or something but in modern basketball square feet does not exist.So put the ball in the basket and don't mind to change your shoot if it is not inconsistent.And if it is, change small things and always try to take the same shoot. :)

    • @AMAXReacts
      @AMAXReacts 8 років тому +1

      +TheCristeo Hello, I'm A-Max, and hopefully this small amount of advice helps, but foot positioning is definitely about the comfort of the player. Give you one example; Stephen Curry, who is recognized as the best shooter in the world, maybe ever, never square his feet, so no, squaring you feet isn't vital; good luck in the future, I explain this in a video as well.

    I personally think that if anyone had access to a gym everyday like the pros, and could take 1,000 shots a day like almost every NBA players do, then we'd all be excellent shooters. Now of course that's just a theory so don't be so rude with the replies.

    • @blackred1032

      right I live quite far away from a gym.. and if I go everyone is always playing a game.. however there is a basket ball court a block away from my house. I could always practice but no motivation and its in the middle of alot of houses

    • @s4rtre
      @s4rtre 8 років тому +12

      +ThraspYT No, absoulutley wrong. If this hypothetical kid is shooting with horrible mechanics like every other kid out there hes gonna be a terrible shooter no matter how many times a day he practices. But if he has Form than yes, i agree. But the workouts would have to be game like drills aka H.I.B.T because just standing still chucking up 1000 shots, never happens ingame. He or she would have to work of the pass, pullups, and off screens.

    • @theultimatejobbersamizayn2782
      @theultimatejobbersamizayn2782 8 років тому +13

      You mean the pros that trained in same conditions as everyone else, to get into league. The reason there even in those gyms is because they worked hard to earn it. Nba players are chose at birth then thrown into the gym to shoot all day. Also, there tons of Nba players who can't shoot, so them having fancy gyms isn't an excuse

    • @thrasp4794
      @thrasp4794 8 років тому +31

      Even the players that can't shoot in the NBA still can shoot better than people who don't have access to a gym I promise you.

    For anyone doubting these tips, simply watch film of great shooters like Curry, Melo, Durant and Jordan and see if they ever use 'BEEF' or 'squaring your feet up' etc. They don't. They did what was natural to them and adjusted it, sway, dip, turning of the feet, all of those 3 are the most important things to remember when shooting for they are the most natural and most rhythmical.

      This is contrary to all of what is usually taught. I've been browsing through proshotcoach's channel where he shows video evidence of almost every player using the above method. I'm not sure if
      #1. it's cherry picking or
      #2. the players' forms are breaking under an intense game or
      #3. it is really the case that this is how they shoot although they believe otherwise.
      Also keep in mind that players' form tends to change as they move further from the basket. They might try to fade or avoid a defender in their face and hence hold the ball longer before shooting it when they are close to the hoop. They tend to do less of that as they move away from the hoop.
      In any case, it's interesting. and certainly worth trying. However, it'll take some time to 'unlearn' one method and to imprint the above in muscle memory. Playing games during that period is going to be difficult.

    • @anirudhkrishna7689
      @anirudhkrishna7689 10 років тому

      Some coaches also debate when to release the ball. I notice that the above video does not comment on either of these and therefore suppose it does not contend with tradition.

    • @bballbreakdown
      @bballbreakdown  10 років тому

      We will have another video that talks about the load and release. That is worth at least 5 mins more. You shouldn't change your mechanics as you move back. However, fading away in very distinct circumstances might help get the shot off. But generally, unless you're a superior athlete, it lowers your fg% too much. Awesome insight, would love to hear if you attempt to reprogram muscle memory.

  • @vincentmskwok

    I used to always 1-2 step into my jump shot, but it took too long and I didn't always square up properly. I practiced the hop/turn/dip/sway method, and when I took it into a game, not only did I have a quicker release, but my 3-point accuracy went way up. Good tips!

      One drill that coach hoover or maybe coach costellau taught is to throw the ball in front of you with a backward spin, catch it and shoot it. This will emulate catch and shoot situation and useful when you are training alone. Sometimes i mixed some varied footwork like the hop, standard left-right and right-left. Just make sure the bounce is high enough for you to comfortably catch it

    Just as a bit of warning to people using this video as sort of a shooting Bible - before you work on the sway, the catch, the turn, make sure that you have your own shot down, where if you go into the gym and just shoot around you are confident that you can put the ball in the net pretty much at will. Once you have your own fundamentals of your shot down, then you can work on crafting, adjusting and adding things to make it more effective. Just remember you need pallet before you can paint.

      Practice your motion without the ball a whole bunch. It's the hardest part to get the hang of, but it's easier without the ball. Then shoot with the ball the same way until you sense something get out of whack, then shoot a bunch of reps without the ball again. Repeat this cycle until you don't get out of whack anymore.

    Sway - lets put it this way now we can add here something else to improve shot but dose addition of sway make your shot efficient? Don`t think so.
    Simple solution if you can not get shot without sway or else like on the video coach mention, Time to hit gym for a while. Don`t brake perfect technique come step closer. No need to force it. Sway appear not to improve shot but stabilize it think about it before you implement it in your shot.

    • @ProShotSystem
      @ProShotSystem 10 років тому +2

      Valery can you name a quality shooter who doesnt sway

    • @Effectivebasketball
      @Effectivebasketball 10 років тому

      You missing the point, game situation and practice is not same thing. When you shot you have at least on the video static drills. There is no reason to sway unless you have bad form and you need it be get better balance. All that movement appear in games for one and only one reason, players tend to stabilize your position in the air phase before land. Not going to argue here. You think this is good so be it. I don`t mind not my team not my players don`t care. And form my experience all coaches differ and it`s not bad thing, some players will fit program philosophy some not. some learn good techniques some bad habits. I like to think that physics plus mats plus physiology more then just capable make perfect assumptions that extensive movements any parts of the body while player shooting could be unreasonable. or essential. Swing not part of the necessity of the shot. For instance, you jump straight up, and nothing will effect you on the way up or down. Here we have efficient movement when we use certain amount of energy X to make it happen. Now we run at a speed 3 miles per hour and to make straight just as before we need extra energy to neutralize momentum.
      It very easy to see same player static and dynamic shots. Galaxy 3 phone camera more than just capable to record high definition video. 1 case static 2 case dynamic slow down to 30% speed and it become so easy to see using some applications with options to measure angles. Back to my point why to use extra energy if you don`t have to. If some one think that they can defy gravity/math there is nothing I can do about it.

      And one more thing some times because of my bad English I argue about things that I agree, and the way I explain things could be seen as offensive, so I`am sorry if I did it above. Its nothing against you or your way of vision only laying up some notions of mine, that can not be 100% right for sure. Cause no one have 100%. Best regard Valery, and thanks for video.

      I think that "sway" should just naturally happen as stability or balance like you said. If I'm taking a SET SHOT I have always gone straight up and down and never had a problem being short, but when I take shots off the move or the hop the sway happens on it's own, if your body is not moving in a direction there is no need in my opinion to have to use your core/hips to stabilize yourself in the air. *actually to prove my point I will restate my comment...on SET SHOTS the higher i jumped i will say that sway naturally occurred more dramatically based on how high i jumped. So if i were to jump 24" on a wide open shot uncontested I'd sway a lot, but None if I were to take a little jump like shown in the vids.

      @Effectivebasketball 10 років тому

      zac m May be I lay it in words that sound different in above respond of mine, but what you sad here it what I did tried to do in my message. So I totally agree with you that it natural motion that stabilize your body in the air.

    this might work when you're wide open but what about when somebody is trying to run at you, or you're coming off a curl you probably won't have time to think about all of this you just gotta catch and shoot.
    the best advice I have gotten is find the form that works for you and perfect it.
    of course their are techniques I use elbow under the ball, wrist back, follow through, etc. for anybody who wants to become a good shooter it's going to happen through hours and hours of practice perfecting your craft.
    and as far as this making you a 50 percent three point shooter come on lol
    the best shooters in the nba don't even shoot 50 to 55 percent from downtown

      its all about practise. thats why guys like steph curry and ray allen are so successful in shooting. they don't have to think about shooting the ball cause its become second nature for them. they take 100 or 200 shots every practise. at the end, it all comes down to practise. peace.

      Shaquille Siyam Just keep your same form, Your problem is that you think too much about your shot... Just shoot the same as your mid-range jumper but just jump a little higher. You know if you jump higher on your shot, The further your shot will go right? Welcome
