    (Also, while I have you: What should we make more of? Different kinds of socks? Coffee? Tea? Paper towels? What do you need that you wish came directly to your house and all the profits went to charity instead of to Jeff Bezos?)

    Regarding the renewed enthusiasm for Surprisingly Edible, a problem that jumped out to me is that not knowing what's actually edible could be really confusing for children (and some adults tbh), especially if edible and inedible items like paperclips or laundry pods were somehow mixed together. I love that Hank is always thinking outside the box though! That ingenuity is a gift.

      I mean, that's really people's own personal responsibility though, like if you have small children maybe don't buy that or leave it where they can reach lol. The world really shouldn't have to have a PG rating because of some people's lack of forethought or reading comprehension.
      Presumably there would be explanatory packaging on the product explaining what it was. And you would have to actively seek it out so...
      I agree that could definitely cause a problem eating seemingly inedible things in front of small children, but like, be a responsible adult. There are lots of things you shouldn't do in front of small children lol, lets add one more to the list.

    This is a genius idea on a whole other level. I mean, yes it helps folks in need, but there is another aspect of subscription socks that is being overlooked here:
    You see, normally I buy a package of socks. 6 pairs or so, all at once - I'll probably buy two. I wear these socks almost every day, which causes wear and tear on them and eventually I have to replace them.
    Thing is, because I bought them all at once, they all wear out at about the same time. This means all my socks are roughly equally worn all the time. ENTER MONTHLY SOCKS - If I receive a new pair of socks every month, that means that after one year, my socks will be worn out on a gradient, rather than all at once. My 12th pair will be brand new, while my first pair will have be... slightly worn? (I've never actually tracked sock lifespan or degradation) In theory, after a few years of monthly socks, I'll only have one pair of worn out socks. No more stocking population collapse for this guy.
    I think this is how revolutions start.

      this is exactly the brilliance of the sock subscription. i was so tired of suddenly going from many pairs of comfortable socks to many pairs of unwearably worn out socks, seemingly overnight

    It’s a sad anniversary. I used to donate to an orphanage in memorial. I’m a parent without kids, they are kids without parents. Life happens.
    Trauma can captivate the mind until I found myself on the other side of divorce. I’m no longer able to afford to give those kids the simple pleasure of toys and movie tickets. But this…this year is different. I realized they would be 15. Starting high school the same year I started working in one.
    But more than that I realized I’m finally healed enough that I can afford something small for charity, maybe not all at once but I can do it. My budget is no longer, “What bill is going to have a late fee next month?” and more, “I have enough with a little to spare.” I like socks. And the first video that pops up in my feed is this one.
    Thanks John. You’ve just reminded me that past all the little emergencies in life that it’s possible to think of others who have less.
    I’m not at all religious but hearing a few of your talks make me think you are so God bless and thank you for being awesome.

    There was a choice in how to frame the socks photo that produced an unexpected feeling in me. At first I had assumed my phone had lost its orientation and I tried that thing we all now do where I lift my phone up and try and rotate it deliberately to get the image to rotate correctly. Failing this I had prepared myself to see John's face return to the frame upside down (something that I realized later would genuinely be disturbing if it was some intentional trick, though I have no idea why) but when I saw him right-side up it occurred to me that the perspective of the feet was from John and not from someone looking at John's feet. In some unexpected way the image suddenly felt correct and personal and it was surprising to me. I think reading the Anthropocene Reviewed has started to change the depth that I examine my own feelings about things I might have previously just ignored. Thank you.

    The socks subscription IS a bad idea. Here's why: Because shipping a million small packages is a bad idea. Make a sub plan where you get 12 or 24 pairs at once. That way there's less transport costs, fewer emissions and fewer import fees to be paid. Arguably the last one's why I don't sub anymore. Every time I get a package from outside the EU I have to pay $25 import fees + 25% taxes on the items value and the shipping fee combined. That probably works for importing cars, but not for importing ONE pair of socks.

    • @itisdevonly
      @itisdevonly 2 роки тому +1

      Yeah. I also felt $12 was a steep price to pay for a single pair of socks. Even reducing to 3 pairs 4x per year would be better than one pair per month.

    • @amanatee27
      @amanatee27 2 роки тому

      So what you're saying is, it's a bad idea for your situation because you don't live in the US. Part of the appeal is having something to look forward to monthly, and spreading that cost out over a year. I understand your desire for efficiency, but unfortunately that's not the only factor to consider.

    • @NeiroAtOpelCC
      @NeiroAtOpelCC 2 роки тому

    Awesome Socks are also legit my favorite socks. I'm in the process of getting rid of most my other socks (aside from my thick workout/hiking socks or black socks for when my ankles need to look formal) and the best part is that I don't have to match them because they are all the same length and fabric and all feel the same and it takes so much tedious time out of my laundry folding routine.
