squiggliez but what if your company would go out of business if it raised wages to the living wage? Is it better to have more people employed and some on a living wage or fewer employed with all on the living wage? (Aka one of the philosophical debates I have with my friends constantly)
AndroidinhumansClothing paying higher wages to the same number of people lowers profit margins which presumably lowers potential dividends for shareholders which lowers interest in the stock ... and/or probably other shit that I'm not aware of. But yeah literally, "that's how capitalists think"
Just because he is not speaking like he needs to catch a train (coz no time lim) does not mean he is unwell. This seems like it's not 100% scripted so obviously it's very different to normal videos. Is is nice to see normal everyday voice Hank.
Radhika Somani I think part of why people are saying that is because the previous video that went up on this channel a little bit ago was really similar but Hank may or may not have been tipsy in it. But I agree with you, I think it's just not scripted/cut and slower.
So Hank bought one of the 10 copies of Anthony Peacemen’s book “Amber Catamounts” for its original price of $100. Then, after Anthony Peaceman passed away, a woman named Sandra sold her copy for $10,000. Because of that, Hank decided to action his off and it ended up selling for $1,000,000. Moral of the story: always buy a book if they only ever made 10 of them.
Can't tell if the folks asking if you're stressed are being serious or sarcastic. Isn't this just brilliantly raw unedited Hank-ness? I live for these kind of videos. I was trying to eat dinner while watching and kept bursting with laughter throughout the whole damn thing and nearly choking. Finally made the correct decision to set the food aside. Also a really important conversation to be having. Jeb Beelzebub is a fascinating monster. Love ya, Hank.
I clicked this vid not realizing it was on hankschannel rather than vlogbrothers, and it took me a solid 6 minutes to finally wonder "wow, is this video longer than usual?"
I actually really liked this video and felt that I learned a lot more than I normally do with your explanation videos. My brain tends to process things a bit slower I guess, so it was actually really nice for you to have this long, slower paced video, and I was able to follow along the entire time without having to pause and go back and be like "wait what?" every couple seconds. Great video! Thanks for clearing up a lot of misconceptions I had about Jeff's net worth!
Hank saying J buzz is far funnier to me than it should be. Just, I dunno, the way hank was saying it made it particularly comical. Also "Beezer" is a pretty good nickname too!
I appreciate this video so much. Your ethical and thoughtful stand on social issues inspires a deep feeling in me that is the opposite of finding life meaningless. Thank you, Hank. :)
I think the more important question is how J-Bezoar calls his employees, to which the obvious answer is Beliezers. But no to their faces, since he's the boss’s boss’s boss’s boss’s boss’s boss’s boss’s boss’s boss’s boss’s boss’s boss’s boss’s boss’s boss’s boss’s boss’s boss.

So my understanding of capital gains taxes is that they're low because you've ostensibly already paid income tax when you earned the money initially so taxing capital gains is essentially "double-taxing" investors.

Comment got long, here's the main points: Being poor sucks. Poverty isn't just laziness. Trickle-down economics is a scam. The way too long version: I grew up with that insecurity. My mom literally had to chase down our dog and wrestle the chicken leg it'd stolen, from one of us four kids (it was hungry too), out of its mouth, rinsed it off and gave it back...and we were grateful/didn't complain about it bc we understood food's food regardless of where its been and we were lucky to hv what we did. Breaks my heart knowing that there are kids in the world, and even here in America, that have even less than we did. Side note to head off the bullshit comments that may come up: My mom worked her ass off! She had her own business cleaning houses, which she started when she realized she wasn't able to find a job that paid enough to cover the babysitter. We often went with and helped out with whatever we were old enough/able to do. She was a single mom with four kids and she did a damn good job at making do with what she had. Our poverty was *not* simply a matter of laziness or something ridiculous like that. I can't even imagine having a large sum of money, let alone $130 BILLION, and not doing whatever I could to improve the lives of others/help out those in need. When people talk about trickle-down economics & such it always leaves me wondering why/how they don't realize that if that idea was actually viable we wouldn't be talking about giving millionaires and billionaires more money to trickle down because they'd have already done so... Giving them more money is just going to mean they do what they've been doing with the rest of it - which, clearly, isn't trickling it down.
I think the moral of this story is that we should all take a moment to call our local senior center and see if we can make a donation to their home delivered meal program :) I deliver meals for one such program and I don’t know many programs which can make such a direct and substantial impact on the lives of senior in our communities.

Happy with a less polished side of Hank. Sometimes all the eloquence can be intimidating. Its good to see there is a long thought process behind every wonderful soundbite of vlogbrothers content.
I’m watching this video and not understanding what it’s for BUT I do know what it’s about because sometimes my best friend and I send each minutes long voice message and it starts with us telling the other person something and then the next six or so minutes we just say our thoughts out loud to the phone for the other person to listen to later and then reply by doing the same thing, that is this video.
And disabled people as well. I'm disabled and rely on SSDI and Medicare to get me through college and grad school. I'm working my butt off to be able to work in public health as an epidemiologist, an important and invaluable role in healthcare. I hope to work for the government one day, because my vision of doing my duty as a citizen is serving the government by trying to protect the health of Americans. However, the constraints with Medicare have limited what I can do as far as working and may end up limiting my job prospects in the future. If I make too much money, I can't keep my Medicare, but because I'm in school and have chronic illnesses there's no way i could work full time at a job that offers good enough health insurance and be a student full time. I've done my best to puff out my resume in other areas (having a strong focus in the research projects I've done, both in a topic I personally find passion in but also something that everyone knows is incredibly important and valuable to research) but I constantly worry that my lack of work experience will be the difference in getting into the career I've been working towards for years. Senior citizens are obviously important and deserve benefits, but it's important to remember that people of all ages and backgrounds rely heavily on SSI/SSDI and Medicare for a whole host of reasons. (Not criticizing your video, just want to shed some light on this!)
It's a Dear Hank and John joke. One time a Ryan wrote in and mentioned that his name was Ryan repeatedly, and John thought Ryan was a generally excellent name, so now it's just a thing. People claim to be Ryans who aren't, real Ryans usually send a photo of their driver's license with their question, etc. They even have a Patreon-only spinoff podcast about Ryans, where they talk about a famous Ryan each week(who at this point is basically never actually named Ryan).
oh wow, just yesterday I had an exam about CSR (corporate social responsibility) and amazon is like one of the big negative examples we went through in the course. also, and I'm not saying charities shouldn't be given money, but it's much more important for a company to start with internal activities like employee wages but also like internal business processes. donating money is easy but also never a long-term solution whereas fundamentally changing your business for the better in social and economic terms is gonna benefit society a lot more
It's nice to hear that someone cares about kids and younger people. You'd think there's more help out there, but it's very hard to get. I struggled immensely as a child, and now I'm 20yrs old, homeless, and trying to earn my bachelor's degree. It's very difficult to find help. Often, you need money to earn money. And, at the very least, you need the health, which I already have immense problems with, but it's made worse by the stress of always not knowing where my life will be in the near future.
I definitely thing we are seeing Hank here after a few drinks, but damn if he isn't making good points. I appreciated this, Hank. As an underpaid worker in my own field (child care), thank you.
I called the mayor of my city “dude” in an email about a blackface picture of him that had surfaced and he seemed more offended by the way I addressed him than me criticizing his racist behavior.
Something I'd love to see him do with all that money is to buy up some more property in Seattle and build a ton of tiny houses for the homeless people in Seattle. Or build a few larger homeless shelters here. Amazon (and a few other corporate companies), brings in a ton of new people every year and everytime they build a new corporate building or distribution center, the cost of living goes way up, and affordable housing has become almost impossible to find here. It has strangled this wonderful city and most people who have lived here their entire lives are being priced out. I am holding on to my home by the skin of my teeth. I recently became disabled, my income level is now 60% less than it was, and rents in Seattle continue to climb. With the way things are now, I couldn't afford a home here even if I was making 100% of my normal pay. To put this in perspective, 12yrs ago my rent for a small 1bedroom apartment was $725 a month. It's now $1500 a month. It has more than doubled, and the only thing that has changed is that there's an Amazon distribution center in the neighborhood now. Our pay rates have not increased enough to make that big of a difference. (Even with the $15 minimum wage for people who work within city limits.) I love this city and I'll fight to stay here as long as I can, but I can already see that if something doesn't happen soon, it will turn into NYC - where only the rich can afford to live here, or people will end up living in apartments the size of closets with multiple roommates just to afford the rent. If Bezos wants to help this city, he should start with all the people suffering because of the impact his company has had on it.
So I think I can summarize this video:
Jeff Bezos should be called JBuzz, because he is made up entirely of bees.
Jonathan Haas Does that mean that he can be sent through the post?
Bees??
Sounds about right
Exactly what I thought, it’s the obvious choice of a nick name for a man made up of bees.
He’s got about a 131 bees to his name, apparently.
I don't know what's wrong with hank, but I'm here for it.
Hank's videos on here have been very interesting; also, he seems to talk a lot more slowly when he isn't under a time limit.
The big difference is that this video is entirely off the cuff wheras almost all vlogbrothers videos have, at the very least, an outline.
I feel like the lack of jump-cuts has a bigger impact on the tempo of the video.
You've been deleting your pauses for so long that it feels weird seeing you breathe.

Being poor sucks. Poverty isn't just laziness.
Trickle-down economics is a scam.
The way too long version:
I grew up with that insecurity.

I do like the more meandering style of delivery on the videos on this channel.
I am completely charmed and also completely agree.
hank's fursona is definitely an amber catamount
I love love love this free form style you've adopted. Do you, like, drink wine before you record? Either way, you remind me to be happy.
Hank rants are my favorite.
I called the mayor of my city “dude” in an email about a blackface picture of him that had surfaced and he seemed more offended by the way I addressed him than me criticizing his racist behavior.
All of this Jeff talk reminds me of hankgames. Rip, hankgames and GamesWithHank.
Great video, not least because all of Hank's iterations of Bezos' name reminds me of the trouble Benedict Cumberbatch has had with "penguins."
THIS kind of content is why i'm subscribed here :)
We are with you! Get well soon!
"Asleep..while cuddling..his Mastiff" That's oddly specific.
In which Hank calls a $29.99 book expensive without realizing that AART hardcover was $36.99 CAD
