Fun fact: Insurance companies are so hated that in civil lawsuits against them, judges often have to instruct jurors to disregard the fact that the defendant is, in fact, an insurance company. It’s nearly impossible to find an impartial jury for cases involving insurers. And they deserve every bit of hate they get.
It doesn't help that with such cases, insurance companies can and willingly drag out the case to waste everyone's time before closing it. So even jurors have a right to be pissed off just for that alone. Knew a woman who had to do a federal medical insurance company fraud case that lasted for months and had to rely on petty jury pay to drive to and from the court house and keep up her rent while she was out of her job just for the company to close off the case. They take all this money just to find a reason not to pay out your own claims via loopholes. Now people are purposefully not paying their insurances as a movement.
@@OriginalPuro Most insurance companies in the US range from fair to bad. There are a small number of highly rated ones. It boggles my mind that people don’t go for the good ones. They don’t even necessarily cost more in premiums. I guess it’s a lot of the same people who are fine buying poorly rated cars and poorly rated appliances?

@@TheRafark exactly, it would be one thing if he had lied, but he filled out the form with the truthful information and they selected him anyway. they breached the rules, not him.
@@myopinion69420 Unfortunately I don't think the insurance company broke the rules, the guys running the event did. So the insurer most likely would have won that case and not had to pay, and if the insurance company doesn't pay there would have been no money. There's a reason the bulls didn't sue when it made them start to get bad press. Their own lawyers would have said it was a waste of money.
I hate insurance companies as much as the next guy, but at the end of the day it's the leagues fault. The Insurance company wrote a contract and the league didn't follow it.
Actually it's the opposite. If the rules say that the contestant may not have played organized basketball within the last 5 years, then the insurance companies would be breaking their promise if they did decide to pay. Fun fact: Dan Arielly did a study and found that the prospect of winning enormous rewards creates such anxiety in most people that it messes them up from completing even simple tasks, like shooting a basketball from a short distance. So with that knowledge, it's no surprise that more people missed the millionaire dollar shot than the smaller prize shots

I feel so good knowing he got the Million. He hit an almost impossible shot in front of 18,000 people. He deserves it. Thank You Michael Jordon. The GOAT.!!!
Paying over 20 years not very cool though. Props to Jordan, because without him he wouldn't have got a cent, but 20 million in '93 is worth much more than paying it off over 20 because of inflation. That amount in today's dollars would be about $4,222,961 (according to an inflation calculator). That means if he got the $20 million in '93, and just put it in a bank or a non risk investment it would be worth, at minimum $4,222,961 but inflation is normally around 2% and a minimum risk investment maybe 4%..... so maybe much more.... cheers.

They knew the man played for a basketball team within the last 5 years (a clear violation of the rules) but let him compete in the contest anyway. @@aaronhardway343 unfortunately it's not the company itself that ends up paying these things, but another company (in this case an insurance company) that guarantees it. Insurance on items is basically a scam because you're betting against whatever you bought lasting for as long as the insurance payments total up to less than what you paid. So you're basically betting that whatever you just bought is such a piece of trash that you think it will stop working before it s supposed to. Well, it's a similar idea here: the insurance company was betting that NO ONE would make the shot, right? That's how their business worked: the Bulls pay them an "insurance premium" or however it's worked out for events like this, IN THE EVENT that someone makes the shot. But the insurance company is always wagering that no one will make the shot. But surprise: someone did! So now suddenly all those checks the Bulls sent over? Yeah, suddenly you have to take all that money (which you got for literally doing nothing) and then SOME OF YOUR OWN, because the premiums don't add up to 1 million dollars and you thought you'd just be riding this free premium gravy train forever. So now suddenly you owe all the premiums plus the difference that adds up to 1 million dollars. So, being the great human beings that exist at insurance companies, you then search for any tiny little loophole that lets you keep all those premiums the Bulls gave you "just in case" someone hits a crazy shot AND THEN THE DIFFERENCE between that total and 1 million dollars. So yeah, in general? The concept of insurance to me is a scam. Specific types of insurance I consider less scam-y, but as a whole the concept of it is basically a scam. Maybe life insurance and home insurance might be the two exceptions, not because the concept is different but because they would ACTUALLY PAY OUT unlike this insurance company didn't pay out the million for a technicality. Then again I'm from the NE part of the US and flood insurance isn't offered here because we settled get such bad storms that tons of homes flood. No one offers that for insurance? And just to prove it's scam-y, do you know why no one offers it? It's because the monthly money you have to give to the insurance company will NEVER BE MORE than the flood damage you suffer (one or two bad years with hurricanes and noreasters we had my basement flood MULTIPLE TIMES). Which just kind of proves the scam behind it: they WONT offer flood insurance because the odds are they'll lose that bet and have to pay up, BUT, they'll offer something wild like "volcano insurance" or "plane falling out of the sky and landing on your house despite the majority of the worlds surface area being water" policy. Sorry, just: it's a scam and I like to point that out.

@manhamnight not successfully. By that logic why don't insurance companies ALWAYS pay out frivolous claims where the claimant was undeniably guilty of a major breech of the rules? After all, someone could always file a lawsuit.

If people used good companies they wouldn’t hate their insurance. USAA, NJM, Amica.
This must be in USA.

Paying over 20 years not very cool though. Props to Jordan, because without him he wouldn't have got a cent, but 20 million in '93 is worth much more than paying it off over 20 because of inflation. It basically all comes down to the insurance company underestimating the man’s odds of making the shot and letting him do it with no strings attached. It’s arrogance plain and simple. And in my opinion, claiming arrogance as your defense for not wanting to pay that guy a million dollars for a contest he rightfully won is pretty shitty. Glad to know that MJ and the rest of the Bulls stood up for him and got him the money he deserved.

Did he for real day that lol. Did he live in an era when and an area where it existed? I feel dumb asking this question smh. I have seen photos of him and the furthest back year when cameras were vastly publicly available is probably 1850’s if I had to guess so then it would have to be that since surely insurance companies existed back then , that therefore it very well may have been Ghandi that did infact say that. It’s just funny I guess because it’s like he has taken ancient wisdom and paired it with modern society. Also the fact that it sounds like proverbs meets Jerry Seinfeld.
Anyone who had read this far quick question: In what era did Confuscious live? He used to express things in proverb style bits like Solomon and Ghandi would. I wonder if the Buddha s spoke like this as well…It’s almost like it sounds like someone giving a prophecy describing style delivery yet something g held to already have been established as truth instead of having the quality of having to wait and see if it comes to pass or not. Basically what’s interesting here in addition to this how then they have effectively taken the vague/unknown and established it with specificity/certainty.

Feels like evils of the world or otherwise and they are making you pay a tax or toll for choosing to travel the righteous way in persistence in order to dismantle an injustice.

If a company isn't willing to pay up then they shouldn't sponsor such events. Kudos to MJ and the rest of the Bulls for sticking up for this guy.
Basically the way greedy industries work. Like he said in the video, there was such a small chance they would have to pay up but they could get huge marketing returns by sponsoring such events. But just that 1 out of 999 times it isnt profitable for the company, they try everything to not take the loss…
