as the late great Carl Sagan would say: “Spirit” comes from the Latin word “to breathe.” What we breathe is air, which is certainly matter, however thin. Despite usage to the contrary, there is no necessary implication in the word “spiritual” that we are talking of anything other than matter (including the matter of which the brain is made), or anything outside the realm of science. On occasion, I will feel free to use the word. Science is not only compatible with spirituality; it is a profound source of spirituality. When we recognize our place in an immensity of light years and in the passage of ages, when we grasp the intricacy, beauty and subtlety of life, then that soaring feeling, that sense of elation and humility combined, is surely spiritual... The notion that science and spirituality are somehow mutually exclusive does a disservice to both.

Remember, Colbert was one of the people in media who suppressed the valid Covid lab leak theory and made fun of it.... Never forget. This man (Colbert) is a fucking paid-off tool and an overrated hack.
+Dream I think that's because In a weird way, Maher actually takes religion more seriously (although not seriously in the sense of credible, seriously in the sense of, this is an argument worth having) than some of the religious believers who get very defensive when you question their beliefs. Some people seem to view religion more as a kind of ethnic identity that they inherited from their ancestors and that somehow questioning that is like racial discrimination and beyond the pale of civilized discourse and insulting on a personal level like an ethnic slur. Religions are a belief system that makes certain claims about the way the world is. I see no reason why anyone should feel personally insulted if other people disagree and make arguments, even mocking ones, against them. By the way, I don't think Colbert took it that way anyway. He seemed to be enjoying the debate. But I could imagine plenty of viewers getting very upset about "intellectually embarrassing myths from the Bronze Age"
Stephen is a lip service Catholic but come on, he doesn't really believe it. He doesn't just make light fun of it, he mocks fundamental doctrine and even the religion itself. (I mean, it's fundamental doctrine that needs mocking, but he goes far even by the standards of plenty of self-professed 'bad Catholics'. Actual Christian beliefs just aren't compatible with that.)
The favorite part of being an atheist is that you don't have to give a damn about religion, so I get that it can be annoying when it is brought up again.. like, haven't we grown up yet? Is this thing still a thing?
It's not a threat. It's a promise. "Hell" is just a quarantine of evil. The great irony is that most atheists have as obtuse a hermeneutic as the Westboro Baptists. It's quite simple, really. Do you want God in your life or not? The fundamental nature of reality is spiritual, not physical, and when the veil is lifted...you'll see that many times throughout your life...you were given a chance at truly understanding God rather than clinging to callow caricatures to sedate your conscience and bolster your ego.
www.biblestudytools.com/topical-verses/hell-bible-verses/ You can't simply just make it look good now. The bible says what it says, and it's filled with absolutely horrid nonsense. Bastard(s) is/are not even in the phonebook. "The fundamental nature of reality is spiritual" [citation needed] Bloody babble.
Lol the level of knowledge of people in the Bronze Age isn’t evidence against the existence of God. Evidence for the existence of God is actually even more compelling with modern science, not less. For example, DNA is a digital program. All models we have of information like this arise from intelligent minds. Bill Gates said DNA is many times more complex than even the most advanced computer software we have ever written. We have no examples of digital codes arising from anything other than a mind. On this one fact alone it’s a scientific and mathematical impossibility for DNA to exist without being designed by a mind. (Not to mention we have no idea where the first mitochondria came from if it wasn’t created and cells have an irreducible complexity) People who make arguments like “Bronze Age fairy tales” are the foolish ones.

There are people in this world... particularly in THIS country (America), who do not possess the capacity to understand logic, reason, or critical thinking... nor do they possess the ability to utilise them in their lives. Once you understand THAT, you'll start to understand the fact that most of those people will NEVER be swayed to think any differently. Then, there are the ones who DO have a capacity for logic, reason, and critical thinking.... yet they CHOOSE to embrace and propagate falsehoods and fairytales in order to win favor within a certain demographic. These people are usually either "right leaning" politicians or high ranking church officials, like ministers and reverends... all of whom are also on the conservative/republican side of politics... so... draw your own conclusions there. Hope this helps!

Who knows maybe this was all just an act to get Maher on the show to actually tell his views and expose them to a larger audience without Stephen getting too much heat. If that's true it's pretty genius.

One of the best responses ever by an atheist to the religious was given by a different guest (Gervais) on Colbert's show a few years ago: "There have been 10,000 religions in world history. YOU deny the existence of 9,999 of them.. I simply deny the existence of ONE more."
There is a key difference between Bill Maher and Stephen Colbert: Stephen is funny. Maher is an unfunny blowhard whose authoritative-sounding pronouncements mask the fact that he frequently has no idea what he is talking about. I'll take Colbert's self-awareness and nominal Catholicism over Maher's strident, browbeating atheism any day of the week. I say this as an atheist.
+Michael Herman Colbert is actually a practicing Catholic. The sheer amount of comments asserting the completely bogus fact that he's 'pretending', or 'isn't really Catholic' is amazing me.
tdwtFULLEPISODES I don't see any proof of funny jokes that he has told thus far on the show. Saying I 'have a poor sense of humour' doesn't really follow, since I liked the Colbert Report. When you watch his monologues do you really laugh? Is it half as clever as any of his previous skits (like the word/ better know a district)? You cannot seriously argue that Colbert is not a watered down middle America pandering talk show host now. All his jokes/ skits really fall flat and lack risk or commitment. It's like Colbert was part of this original, smart, socially progressive concept of a show.... and then traded it in for money and old stale media cred. But maybe that's your favourite type of humour?
Emmanuel Bassil Enjoying and partaking in community and the tradition/ ritual aspect of a religion doesn't equal religious belief. Belief is the important part btw.
But remember Colbert is a devout catholic, but he wasn't that serious about converting Mahr. So this is a good example of truth in comedy. He'll exaggerate his faith for comedic effect, but I suspect, deep down he would love to bring Mahr back too the church, but he wouldn't really put much effort into it if he though it would make Mahr feel uncomfortable in real life.
Bill was pretty rigid honestly. Like lots of anglo saxons atheist (no offense), even if i can understand why they're very annoyed by religion in the good ol' Us of a
I'm not sure if Colbert even knows, whether or not he is being sarcastic...he is not sincerely mocking the religious position (as Maher is), and he is not (openly) mocking being atheist. What exactly makes this a joke except for his tone of voice? Colbert is awesome at pretty much everything - except being intellectually curious enough to do real, honest comedy on religion.
After watching it again I really like this interview. I'm glad that it wasn't just a liberal love fest and that they actually had a little duel of wits.
"I'm glad that it wasn't just a liberal love fest" Okay, but does every video on youtube have to be reimagined as about politics, considering that there are countless theist conservatives, atheist conservatives, theist liberals, and atheist liberals?
I think your disdain for him is misplaced. He's not a bad person. Kind of an asshole sometimes but overall he really isn't a bad guy. He just feels strongly about religion being a bad thing for society. In his view religion is a major enemy of human progress(which is something he does care about). Also, you can tell that he regrets getting into that conversation because unlike a lot of people he has argued with he actually likes Stephen and doesn't want to fight with him.
+UBATify I despise him after watching enough episodes of Politically Incorrect and Real Time. He's been ridiculed and destroyed multiple times by people who's been on his show and he always does the same thing - pander to his audience for applause by making half-assed jokes. Jon Stewart used to play the "I'm not political; I'm a comedian" card a lot, but Bill's utter abuse of the card really takes the cake.
Bro, Stephen I just found out you’re Catholic and I just want to say you inspire me to not keep my faith hidden. You’re absolutely correct, there is so much we don’t understand in this world and God reveals answers to any doubts I have when I have faith in him. They obviously aren’t even just Bronze Age stories if Jesus (who came to earth came during the classical era) taught them. I know this is old but ye, God Bless man, stay strong!
i love how steve denies being religious if he thinks it will make him a target. other times he quotes directly from the bible and gets applause from the audience
People only follow their holy book, if it works in their favor. In every other case, they are perfectly fine to do the opposite of what is written in their book.
+Andrew Frye no they don't. Stephen and Bill are such friendly, respectable people. They have no reason to hate each other just because of different beliefs.

Would you look at that. A generalization already! I'm impressed. Tell me; O ever-lasting beacon of wisdom, What led you to believe that I am: 1) Dim-witted 2) A theist 3) The weak extent of my grasp on reality. Or what, did you expect me to let you throw unsubstantiated assertions without offering a shred of evidence?
Then please; strengthen my grasp on reality. I'm sure you know a lot that I do not know. Enlighten me. What am I missing to strengthen my grasp on reality? Moreoever, I can now qualify you as a dim-witted person, since you are also guilty of pushing forward an ignorant and baseless comparison. You just asserted that all theists have a weak grasp on reality. Unless you base that assertion ;then that makes you dimwitted! PS: Now I understand why people love arguing over silly matters. This is so entertaining. The ball is now in your court, O Beacon of Ever-lasting Wisdom; and All-Knowing Crystal of Knowledge.
A 'Bronze Age Book'. Hmm.. Where have I heard that? Now see; this is the mistake people like you make. You pick up the bible and make unsubstantiated claims; even though you understand next to nothing about it. And here's another generalization I'd like to debunk for you. I never use the internet to learn about my religion. Why? Because mostly everything on the internet is bullshit; when it comes to that topic. I find myself learning much more from secular websites than most 'religious' websites. The best place to learn about anything really is by reading books. Politics, biology, religion, philosophy; you name it. But that's besides the point. Can you substantiate your claims that: 1) Jesus was never mentioned in the Old Testament. 2) The book has been substantially altered; so as that the content and message of the book changed.
+dudurune Most religious people do not realize that the bible took from many texts that were written before it like The Gilgamesh Epic. Jesus Christ also has the same story as dozens of other Gods that came before him such as being born on Dec 25th, the three wise men tale, 12 disciples, and being born to a mother who was impregnated by a god. Horus, Buddha, Mithra, Krishna, Osiris and others have similar stories that came hundreds to thousands of years before the story of Jesus Christ came along.

It's super weird when Christians joke with ideas like "if you're wrong, you're going to hell." Cos that's exactly what their scriptures say. That's basically saying "Hey, decent human being who simply hasn't seen any compelling reasons to believe, my ever-loving god who is so great and wonderful is going to torture you for all of eternity." I mean, how can any human being be ok with the idea that the god they love so much would do that to people? Really disturbing.
Well, it's because you're given a choice to believe or not right? So if you willfully choose to disobey then you're pretty much accepting punishment. If someone chooses to not believe because he's unknowing on the subject than he probably didn't care too much about an afterlife in the first place.
WWJDleinad050 Wow, ok. So for one, no one's choosing not to believe here. I don't know about you, but I can't force myself to believe something. You're acting like it's some undeniable fact that Christians have it right and non-Christians are just pretending that they don't know about it. Secondly, how are we accepting punishment if we don't believe that the punishment exists? What, I'm supposed to pretend to believe something just on the off chance that your religion is right so that I don't get punished if it is? What if I choose the wrong religion? Thirdly, what if, hypothetically, I desperately want to believe but I can't because nothing can convince me to? Since your god would know my deepest thoughts and therefore know that I don't really believe in him, would he send me to hell for not believing even though I want to? Fourthly, even if what you've just said wasn't full of fallacies to begin with, my point was more that Christians are generally worryingly ok with the idea that their god tortures people for all eternity simply because they don't believe in him. Let's say there was undeniable evidence that he exists, like he appeared in the sky and started making miracles happen. If a good, kind, charitable person saw this and still refused to worship him, and got sent to hell, would you be ok with the fact that your god did that? Would he still be a good, loving god? If you would be, that's really disturbing.
You like that because its a strawman argument. And he didn't handle it well, he was ready to get shit on like a true martyr, thats not intellectual honesty, its him acting invincible to disprove Bill's arguments insincerely.
"thats not intellectual honesty, its him acting invincible to" You're taking Stephen too seriously, he was fucking around. (And comparing one's own invitation to a denomination to an invitation to dinner isn't a straw man argument, either.)

"intellectually embarrassing myths from the bronze age" - fucking perfect! :)
People from the bronze age were more spiritually developed.
Is the phrase, "more spiritually developed" a euphemism for stupid?
Stormy Molnjavichen lolol please. how would you even know that. I'm much more spiritually developed through science and psychology and psychedelic substances. my world is too big for your god.
as the late great Carl Sagan would say:
“Spirit” comes from the Latin word “to breathe.” What we breathe is air, which is certainly matter, however thin.

When someone asks me what passive aggressive means, I show them this video
Colbert has a habit of inviting people onto his show for a 1-on-1 discussion, only to lecture them and talk over them like a complete asshole.
He even had the gall to try that crap on Jon Stewart... but Jon just stood up and talked directly to the camera, haha. No matter how much Colbert tried to undermine that dialogue and pull the wind out of his jokes, Jon Stewart persisted like a boss.
Remember, Colbert was one of the people in media who suppressed the valid Covid lab leak theory and made fun of it....
Never forget. This man (Colbert) is a fucking paid-off tool and an overrated hack.
I respect people's opinions, but Stephen poked him and woke the beast! Bill Maher just said what he thinks, no filter.
Lmao
+G Jones Colbert asked for it. Starting to talk about religion or politics is the fastest way for friends to start a quarrel.

Bill crushes this one. An "invitation" with the threat of hell thrown in if you don't accept? HA!
It’s not a threat. Is telling children who are playing on a highway that they will get hit by a car a threat?
When Stephen said "come back" he was being kindly sarcastic. I'm an atheist but I love stephen colbert
👍
I like how they both shade each other without getting pissed off each other
"Invitations" don't often include threats of eternal hellfire. So there is that...
It's a shame his religion was too.
The fundamental nature of reality is spiritual, not physical, and when the veil is lifted...you'll see that many times throughout your life...you were given a chance at truly understanding God rather than clinging to callow caricatures to sedate your conscience and bolster your ego.
www.biblestudytools.com/topical-verses/hell-bible-verses/
You can't simply just make it look good now. The bible says what it says, and it's filled with absolutely horrid nonsense. If it's a quarantine of evil then its creator should be the first to be sent there.

Can you substantiate your claims that:
1) Jesus was never mentioned in the Old Testament.

If you would be, that's really disturbing.
dont believe - go to hell for eternity - be Hitler and confess on your death bed - go to heaven - ------- no thanks
Disturbing for you
This interview hits different after finding out they don’t particular like each other off camera.
😮
GREAT IRONY: When I was younger, I was a strong believer in the Bible. When I got older, I actually started to read the Bible...and became an Atheist.
A tale as hold as the Bible itself XD.
I'm glad to see them having an honest debate about sensitive topics when they both have such differing opinions. It's refreshing.
Stephen handled that VERY well. I like how he drew the connection to the dinner invitation. GJ
"Stephen handled that VERY well." And no, throwing out familiar cliches such as the lie that atheists refuse to admit to not understanding things was not "handl[ing]" the conversation "VERY well," but as I say, he was just having fun.
I rewatch this often
That was awesome. All of it.
I love Colbert. Reminds me of the Crazy Uncle who's always late for Church on Sunday. But who tells people in front of him when it's time to kneel. Keep up your great sense of humour Colbert! "And Jesus smiled at him ..." (Mark 10,21)
OP, best comment I have seen so far!
Now that you mention it...
"I've had more inviting invitations"!!!!
When you're mad you got invited
These two are great together
i really wish for a third round of this
Dont argue with Bill Maher, you won't win.
That's right. It's impossible to win an argument with an idiot.
Stephen: "I suck as a Catholic..." .... That sounds like something you would only hear altarboys say...
Yo
Oh boii
😁 good one!
Not funny respect please
@@VanillaEarth744 so funny!
I long for the day UA-cam ceases to be one big echo chamber for anti-theist or militant atheist thought and behavior, and it opens up to truly reasonable, respectful and inquisitive dialogue.
I enjoyed a looooot this conversation.
Colbert knew this would get Bill going. Maher called his bluff and Colbert was shocked and hurt and had no response.
Over the centuries, were there times when science, religion, and philosophy were well-balanced? Nice to hear this conversation.
This is really interesting. Colbert is one of the furthest left-leaning hosts on tv and yet he gives a truly accurate invitation to Christianity here. He gives a better explanation of what it takes to be a Christian than Joel Osteen does in an hour long sermon each week.
It’s silly to think that liberals can’t be religious or Christian.
@@josue24 inviting people to Christianity is not a typically left-leaning thing. We generally allow people to believe whatever they want and leave them alone.
josue hermosillo
Of course not, but a significant sect of the left is not fond of western religion.
@@onnixcarmichele3911 western religion?? Are you referring to odin?
@@hmichaelshultzjr You've never invited anyone to check out something that you believe in or that you like?
You can see the void in Bill’s eyes where his soul used to be.
I can see the void between your ears where a brain should be.
FlyingFree333, I can see you gave your own comment a thumbs up. You stay classy.
I enjoyed that. I love Stephen but I'm with Bill on this one.
funny to see that the audience knows both of them better than they know each other.
Damn. Tell em Bill. I like how he didnt even entertain Pascal's Wager. It's such an easy argument to rebuttal, but instead hits em with the, "I dont listen to stories from the bronze age" damn.
Pastor Skeptic yeah why listen to the wisdom of men from the past?
If I'm right, you failed and if you're right...who cares.
@@halfbrain3694I hope you're not actually using Pascals Wager right now
@TheBuilder “But Marge, what if we chose the wrong religion? Each week we just make God madder and madder.” If Homer Simpson can refute it then it wasn't a good premise to start with
TheBuilder løl, “all atheists do”. Some of us have jobs.
And I personally never bring up the idiotic thought that people believe in a god workout evidence on my own. It’s always in response to an moronic claim that there’s a god.
Some serious comedy kung-fu going on in this exchange, between 2 masters.
This back and forth between them is like watching two legends verbally and comically battle it out.
Bill absolutely owned Colbert here. I think he only missed out on pointing out how stupid Pascal's Wager is.
I think both you and Bill took it too personally. If you saw Colbert for a while, you'll realise that he was being sarcastic and not serious.
@Justin Credible Note that Bill ridicules but never disproves anything. Anyone can mock.
Jeffrey Granger Surely you know that the burden of proof is on the person making the claim. Colbert would have to prove that gods exist. Bill can simply wait for the evidence. In the meantime, there’s nothing to believe.
@@orver1 Wouldn't Bill, by the same token, have to prove that God DOESN'T exist? Sounds like a circular argument to me.
@@jeffreygranger6913 if you claimed that I stole your car, then I have to prove I didnt? Guilty until proven innocent? The person making the claim must support their claim. They do not have the luxury of their claims being automatically true. Think about it. What even are the gods? It's a nonsense concept that no one really understands. I have to prove the non-existance of every random raving that you decide is true?
Colbert just got indirectly hitchslaped...
You should see the one with Ricky Gervais. Colbert basically admitted defeat
Bill Maher realizing how much of a grumpy old man he is.. 😂
