This video should be shown to all those who pass their driving tests in this country. It's a reality check. It clearly shows how that split second decision can affect not only your own life but also those around you.
Very powerful.
Oh definitely, My daughter is currently having lessons and I can't stress enough to her that other people's lifes are in her hands and for her to be aware always, I am very nervous for the time when she passes her test, The roads are so busy now and I absolutely hate the smart motorways.
i dont know anyone involved- but im seriously shaking.. crying ... this should be used to wake up and teach joung drivers - expeccially in how important a first aid lesson is ... amazingly good input here to maybe even have mobile phone law to be switched off while driving! like in school ... cus some calls u get are not that smiling easy and get u to drive in a rush or anger or disbelieve ... or otherwise...
It should be shown before people have their first driving licence, I'd go as far as saying that it should be shown in schools
ABSOLUTELY!
Agreed !
As a lorry driver this is absolutely devastating, we are all on the roads to get to our destination. And it is our responsibility to keep ourselves and others on the road safe. So remember other peoples lives are really in your hands. Stay safe.
I'm a lorry driver too and I totally agree with you.
@@stevehoulihan726 I am a van driver and I agree with all of you. We should look out for each other when we are on the roads and maybe this togetherness should be implemented in the highway code and when anyone starts learning how to drive. And yet lorry drivers still tailgate right up peoples arses for some odd reason

@@garypotter1985 It's not meant as a defence in any way, but a truck driver, being so high up, can see over other vehicles and so much further ahead if anything should happen. But driving close to the car in front in very intimidating for the car driver. There's no excuse for tailgating.
You can see why the police get so annoyed when they see you on your phone.
So needless, biggest waste of life. This is why I can’t wait for self driving cars, humans like in a lot of pursuits have revealed they cannot be trusted!!

He isn't a bad person, quite clearly. Whilst it is unforgivable to have been on his phone whilst driving, (regardless of the size of the machine he is driving...being on your phone whilst driving is stupidity, plain and simple, car..lorry..whatever)... he hasn't set out to go and cause harm to anyone. He's done something that millions of drivers across the UK do on a daily basis, and it just so happens that he's one of the ones that found out the hard way and paid the price on that day. Taking the life of others and paying for it in prison. Videos like this should be compulsory viewing for all new drivers in the UK. Cars can cause death in this way too, just as lorries and larger vehicles can.
I drive about 50 miles a day on the motorway for work, and the amount of people looking down at their mobile phones whilst driving is becoming every other driver. It is the height of stupidity, unbelievably irresponsible and just beyond excuse. There's absolutely no reason for it. If you think you'll be tempted by your phone whilst driving, put it somewhere completely out of reach, and turn it off if necessary. Whatever it takes. Nothing is so urgent that it warrants risking the safety and possibly the lives of not only yourself, but everyone else on the road.

As a heavy goods driver we have to do a cpc every year . This video has been shown to us as part of the course to educate us the seriousness / consequences of using mobile phones when driving . I think anyone with a licence to drive any vehicle should do these courses to educate every single road user .
Technically ...... its not 'Every Year' ........... its 5 x 7hr courses (over 5 days) every 5 years (a fresh CPC card is valid for 5 years) ........which means ...if you choose to you could do 5 x 7hr courses in 5 consecutive days & they could be 2 weeks (taking time for it to arrive) before ur current one expires ! It SHOULD be 1 x 7hr course Yearly but it isnt unfortunately !!
@waynethompson2939 ever since the cpc was introduced I have always done a 7 hr course once a year and its been like that the past 2 companies I have worked for
@@corkscrewfool2154 which is what it should be :) Most (reputable) companies will get a driver to do one a year so u dont even notice it being a chore & come renewal year (every 5 years) your only needing one. God this is so tragic, makes you aware of just how dangerous it is to look at your phone while driving. RIP to those who lost their lives.
Why would someone take their attention off the physics of the llorry . Huge price
To give you some idea of just how dangerous it is, you may be surprised to know that at 30 mph a vehicle travels 16 metres per second, at the same time the recognised stopping distance at the same speed is 23 metres. Although those stopping distances figures were drawn up in 1954 using a Ford Anglia with drum brakes, no power assistance, ABS or other electronic wizardry that we have now, and on cross ply tyres that had as much grip as a banana on an oil slick, nonetheless, you do the math. You have less than two seconds to react and I don't care how good of a driver you think you are, you cannot defy the laws of physics.
Even looking at a smart watch that gives a message notification with the phone out of sight is also risky
When you think that in the UK around 13 million people use their phones whilst driving it's amazing there isn't more like this.
that lorry driver isn't a bad person. What he has done is absolutely his fault, and extremely horrendous. And once he gets out of jail, he will have to live with the weight and guilt of what he has done for the rest of his life, and that, that is his true punishment

@@somebloke2238It's one of those cases where you can't and shouldn't go unpunished for negligence that causes such devastation. All of this was preventable and while it's just a sad story all around that has to be considered.
I disagree, yes he didn’t mean to do it but knowing that multiple people had died and then lie about the cause of the accident is just pure selfishness. If you don’t admit your at fault knowing you are the reason 3 people are dead makes you a bad person and before you say he admitted to it… no he didn’t they heard people say he was on his phone and questioned him and knowing he was going to get caught out then admitted to it

@@Roobadoon I have seen this video a couple of times now. I guess it depends on how you define 'bad'. Not in the sense of evil, to do bad things with ill intent. More like bad in the sense of selfish and uncaring with bad things happening as a result of his action.
This video was very well made. I've been a paramedic in Australia for 25 years and attended countless fatalities and traffic crashes with multiple patients. Especially if you're the first on scene, the magnitude of the incident just increases as you walk closer to the scene. The walking wounded are often the first you see, and although they may present with gruesome injuries, are for the moment a lesser priority. When you're assessing an unconscious/semi-conscious trapped patient with life threatening injuries and then looking over your shoulder making sure the walking wounded are not deteriorating, waiting for more crews to arrive seems eternal. There's something about the smell of congealed blood, motor oil and fluid that seems to linger in the nostrils hours afterwards. Despite not being able to sense the fear and confusion bystanders and patients feel, or the odours of the scene, this video captures the scene dynamics extremely well. Drive safely and sensibly, folks.
Thanks for your service. I'm fire service. Nothing worse than being on scene off duty without your grab bag or equipment. 😕

People forget how dangerous the roads are. I always have some sort of anxiety on the roads as a hgv driver. From the crashes and stuff I’ve personally experienced. But in a way that anxiety makes me drive responsible and with caution. Literally people make fun of my driving, calling me miss daisy or slow coach it’s like a running joke with other truckers. But this is the thing I don’t ever want happening to me. As a father of 3, I want to come back to them every night and it isn’t worth the risk.
Anyone who mocks you for your driving, ignore them. Like you say, it isn't worth the risk.
On the roads when I've come across a lorry driver such as yourself, I'm incredibly appreciative of the consideration
I can so relate to this. I'm so extra cautious. Drives people behind me crazy at times. But I've seen so many fatal accidents in my life and once you see it, you cannot unsee it!
As an ex police officer I have dealt with a number of fatal accidents. I am left with all those awful memories in my mind just left to sink by the police. I watched this and it all came flooding back and made me cry. I feel so so sorry for the reletives of the deceased people and the people who dealt with this awful situation. I remember telling a lady who was pregnant that her husband had died she collapsed. What I didn't tell her is that I held his hand and asked me not to let him die, he died.

Even if you did it safely while sitting in a line of traffic for half an hour, you could still lose your licence if someone films you on your phone (if you've recently passed), that's another reason not to do it.

As an enthusiast cyclist I read about this kind of thing far too often on the forums, Police and CPS failing victims of crimes on the roads.
Rhyl in Wales in 2006, a driver caning it in winter and clearly icy, on a bend with bald tyres. Goes straight on at the bend killing 4 people riding bikes, 3 adults and a 14 year old boy who was riding with his dad.
Chief Inspector Lyn Adams stated barely hours later "There is nothing to suggest the driver did anything but lose control and on the face of it this seems to be a terrible accident" The driver was estimated to be in excess of 50mph by the police "There is no indication to suggest that this is down to something like excessive speed"
Police stated bald tyres had no impact on the outcome. The driver had overtaken the local vicar minutes previous. Over 50mph on a bend in icy conditions and the CI called it an 'accident'!!
Driver got done for a 'con and use' offence for the bald tyres and £180 fine + 6 penalty points, one of the worst travesties of justice in recent times!

Such a sad story, the lorry driver was obviously one of those drivers who use his phone whilst driving on daily basis & nothing has ever happened... then 1 day out of the blue the lack of concentration for a few seconds causes such drama
Anyone using a phone driving, need to be banned from driving, for life. 💯💯
I would just like to commend you on an excellent documentary. It covered the total devastation of the crash and the massive impact on the families who loved ones lost their lives
Caught driving using a mobile phone should incur an immediate 12 month prison sentence, no excuses.
Plus a 2 year ban
There isn't enough prison space in the world for this! SO many people do it every single day.
Most modern cars have a large touch screen display in the middle of the dash, not many buttons. That means the driver has to take their eyes off the road to use it. Doesnt strike me as great design, and not much different to using a phone.
Nothing on that screen is essential to controlling the car in a safe manner. If a driver chooses to look at that central screen and try and fiddle with something irrelevant on it then it is just as bad as them choosing to take their phone out and look at something on it. It's no different realistically than if the car had a radio and the driver chose to change the volume or the station. It's still a distraction and drivers still shouldn't be choosing to take that distraction
Not too long ago i bollocked someone for being on their phone whilst driving. In return I got verbal abuse like I was the one in the wrong. Yes, some people are this level of dumb! I still see this pretty much every day.
No point calling me when I’m driving I ignore my phone. If they really need to give me a message they can leave a voicemail or I’ll call them back. My phone is 99% of the time on silent anyway , which everyone should put it on whilst driving
Hard seeing this! This man's no intentional killer he got complacent behind the wheel and used his mobile the same as most drivers I see up and down the motorways doing! As a hgv driver I feel for everyone involved in this tragic event.
He IS intentional ignorant and a murderer
If someone looks at their phone when driving it's intentional, they know the risk
It's unforgiveable, don't feel sorry for him
He was looking at dating sites whilst driving down a motorway in a heavy, large vehicle. Atrocious.
@@Xsar1942 You don't seem to understand what "intentional" means (it means he "intended" for this to happen, which clearly is not what happened)
This is so sad. People need to seriously think about this before putting others in danger on the road. RIP to those who lost their lifes, including the dog. And I hope the ones who were scared by this and those who lost their loved ones find a lot of peace and strength in their life. 🙏🏻

I’m a lorry driver, I think it’s the fact mobile phone wasn’t such a big punishment too long ago people think it’s forgivable. Don’t drive on the phone because it’s not a matter of if, it’s the matter of when this is going to happen 💔
Phone use was already banned, it was covered under the offence of Careless Driving (drive without due care and attention) falling under the category - Carrying out other tasks while driving. I had a friend that was convicted of that very offence because they were playing with the controls of the radio, this is long before mobile phones were around. All that changed was to give it its own seperate offence.
@@Jb-tl1yi I didn’t know that mate. It’s a lot harsher penalty’s now though and rightly so
@@dansactive756 It's now an easier criteria to convict, no proof of distraction needed, the CD offence carries between 3 - 9 points or possible disqualification, depending on how serious the infraction is viewed.
Yet we see lorry drivers filling in paperwork, watching a film, reading, on their phones and with maps on the steering wheel EVERY DAY
I see just as many HGV drivers on their phones as other road users - They should all have their driving licences taken off them, and made to walk !
It needs to become as socially unacceptable as drink driving and with the same sentence - a 12 month ban if caught driving using your phone.
One of my fears as a driver is when you're slowing down and someone isn't paying attention and rear ends you at a tremendous force of speed. Im always looking in my rear whenever I'm slowing down - more so after driving highway speed.
Someone on their phone hit me head on while I was waitng at a red light back in Feb. I've never truly recovered mentally from that, and still worry it will happen again and I wont be lucky like last time. I can drive okay, but I check my mirrors constantly - twice more than before the collisons.
Take care , hopefully you will never experience something like this again
Sorry this has happened to you. I'm the same with regards to the fear. Or cars that are pulling onto a main road from a side road and they don't even stop to check if it is okay to join. 😮
How can you drive a hgv on a motorway and not pay attention to the road ahead. 25 years behind bars and banned for life is what I would give him if I was the judge.
We had a really cocky chap work with us for a couple of days in between his truck driving job. I remember thinking to myself he isn’t mature enough to be driving something that big. A year later I found out he killed a woman on a bike when turning left on a roundabout in London. Driving one of those things is a responsible job and the guys that do it should get payed a bit more and the cowboys from Europe need more lessons for driving in the uk
Foreign lorry drivers. The worst. Killing mcs. See everyday
the dead dog got me the most
To all those who think it is okay to drive and use their phone: If you are involved in a serious accident and there is a suspicion you may have caused it, the police will check your phone records. You don’t need to have made a call at the time of the accident, a few minutes before of afterwards is still considered enough of a distraction. And if someone died as a result, you'll be going to prison for causing death by dangerous driving.
that would prove nothing..it is nigh on impossible to prove a driver was on the phone when a crash occurs..phone on the floor means nothing.
Going to prison, but unfortunately the sentence lengths do absolute zero to deter.

The burden this man must carry i can not imagine. Just one decision can destroy and devastate lives. The regret and burden is heavy
This is why there is no excuse for using mobile phone whilst driving.

As an experienced artic driver - this video is horrific and a shocking reality check with a terrible aftermath. There is no excuse for being on the phone while driving (HGV or cars etc) and this collision was 100% avoidable.
As for HGV drivers who fall asleep...I have a lot more sympathy - it's the hauliers who are making them (us) drive crazy hours. I was given a route last week whereby I would be on the go from 10am - 1am mainly driving - then expected to get a decent night sleep in a layby with trucks thundering past every few minutes and do it all over again the next day...I was shattered - got no sleep - realised I would potentially be a hazard later the next as a result of sleep deprivation and I had to argue/haggle with the transport office to say I couldn't in all consciousness drive the next day. Yes - it cost me wages BUT I wonder how many other drivers don't get the choice - ie - do it or you're fired....People often argue that you have legal driving limits in place but getting a good night sleep to recharge is as important and sadly in this country we seem to skirt over lorry driver welfare or treat it as an afterthought....crazy when you can see clearly in this shocking video what damage a 44 tonne lorry can do at even low speeds if you're not 100% focused and in the game. My final thoughts and condolences for the families of the deceased and all who were involved in this dreadful event...
Last month I was hit in a 5 car pile up on the A14 because a flat bed truck driver was on his phone. Watching this makes my heart ache.
Such a sad situation for everyone involved, you can see how much remorse he is showing. He seems a good guy, it’s just a shame this had to happen. Let this be a lesson to those who risk distraction whilst driving
I totally agree 😢
Remorse don’t get it done mate.
this accident freaked me out so much 😪 i was shocked into making sure i never, ever even thought about touching my mobile while in the driver seat. it felt like this could happen to anyone, anyone who is not being 100% careful while driving...one minute we're safe and the next we are not. stay safe on the roads everyone 😔
In France everyone uses the hazard warning light when a vehicle slows down in such situations.
In England it used to be illegal to use them in this case, what is the current situation.
This technique saves lives.
@@jfryer485 don't know if it's illegal or not, but yes, people would do that. or flash oncoming vehicles to warn of danger. i think if it's a choice between not doing it cos it's 'illegal' or doing it to try n warn others of danger, it's really no choice at all. we'd do it.
@@jfryer485don’t think it’s illegal. Loads of people here use it.
If you have a smart watch that’s also connected to it and it buzzes to let you know your phones received a message don’t even look at that either as it’s also a distraction
@@jfryer485 It's literally what hazard lights are for, it has never been illegal in England to do so. It's practically the only time it is legal, although many muppets think the hazards are for when you park illegally, just turn on the hazards and it is magically legal.
I had a manager who always called me while driving. Once I told him about how dangerous are the mobiles phones when someone is driving
This is exactly why I get bad road rage when I see drivers on the phone whilst driving as I know the consequences of bad driving.
His sentence was far too short...
You can see his remorse, he is paying for what he did emotionally, that is more punishment than a prison sentence believe me and he will never forgive himself. He will suffer now for the rest of his life whether that be behind bars or not
@@Reaperess1 true he has to live with that but he might dedicate his life to paying everyone back and even take a beating or two and after that he's probs gonna off himself
I still believe lorries need a full redesign. They're designed solely for transporting as many goods as possible.
There is no crumple zone when a lorry hits you. The zones on a car will not withstand the impact from a lorry, the entire car itself will crumple. It might not make any difference but we do seriously need to think about how to make them safer.
The Lorry who caused it completely went over that small car. That's why im terrified of being stuck in traffic on a highway. Worried that the person coming from behind isn't paying attention and will ram right into us.
He was sentenced to 12 years' imprisonment. Just to inform about this fact.
If this video doesn’t alter people’s ideas of blatantly being on their mobile while driving, I don’t know what will. This should be a public information film. My thoughts are with the bereaved, and sadly for the truck drivers’ family.
Somebody who drives on A1M regularly, this is scary, I drive to Darlington, Sunderland and Chester le Street at least once a month from London, sent chills through my spine looking at the Hilux... all because of one driver's inconsiderate action. Lives are more precious than a WhatsApp message or call.
I’m always driving on the highway and I’m always thinking about situations like this. Stay safe out there.

"give me the key to the world really"
What a touching thing to say
I have empathy for everyone involved, including the driver. The amount of people I see on the phone whilst driving, so many people are guilty of what this man did. This guy just happened to have major consequences for it. Mobile phones are far too addictive, they literally compete with our ability to keep ourselves and others safe when driving. Something needs to to be done about it.
Heartily agree. But what?
I refuse to even look at my smart watch notifications (it buzzes) on messages received because even that can be a distraction
Kudos to the response team, I wish we had this kind of response and care here in America… best of luck to everyone involved in this horrific incident…
I was thinking the same thing when I came across your comment. Even though I like in the UK, I’ve seen so many videos on American policing to know that their cops would have responded in a totally different way. Probably starting with them first drawing their guns on the driver and handcuffing him immediately.
Unfortunately in Europe it's quite normal to see people driving and using their mobile phones. I live in Germany and every time I see a tractor driver 70% of the time they've got a mobile phone to their ear.
This was shown to me whilst refreshing training for my HGV,
Shocked me then and still shocks , absolutely heartbreaking from every angle.
He killed 4 lives.
What about the dog.
It is still a life.
FRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
Thank you to whoever put this video up, yes it is a shocking video but this is reality not a video game,
I don’t know what prison sentence the driver got for this undoubtedly not long enough, l’m not condoning his actions in any way but at least he did show genuine remorse and accepted the fact that he was the cause of the accident, he also accepted the fact that he’d ended the life of three people and changed the lives of countless others including his own family.
I think there should be more of these videos on UA-cam it may deter a few van/lorry drivers and also car drivers the consequences of using your phone while driving.
Not only have I seen ordinary people using they’re mobiles whilst driving, I seen cops aswell, almost everyone dose it, Really sad for those people that lost they’re lives, FairPlay driver, driving trucks is no easy job,a lonely job, driving for hours bored outa your skull, God Bless to those families for they’re losses❤️

Using a phone at the wheel is just as dangerous if not more so than drink driving. It’s about time our politicians give mobile phone users a 12 month minimum ban like drink drivers. The lorry driver clearly was remorseful. He will always think about the people he killed and their families and the countless family members and friends will never forget their loved ones. No winners here 😪😢
I don't think that people should be prosecuted for pushing a cassette or cd into a stereo. Or opening a window, or maybe even swigging soft liquids.
No. Car makers need to install phone sensors and warn you if your using it
@@user-sf7kl9uh7k All it takes is a 1 or 2 seconds of distraction for an incident to occur.
