The concept of Rick Astly covering Foo Fighters sounds like something a youtube channel would conceive using Ai vocal programs, but Rick was the first to act ❤
I thought it was an AI video when i saw the thumbnail and title for a hot second
when i clicked on this video, i definitely thought it was an ai cover until i looked at my phone again a minute later
So even covers are "wacky ai type content!!!" now? What are people allowed to do without being insulted like this 😭
@@-Teague-if that's what you got from the comment, you grossly misread.
@@anti_honey they said an artist who loves to cover other people's songs covering someone else's song seemed like an AI generated concept what else am I supposed to get out of it
I still can’t believe that it took turning Rick Astley into a living meme, for multiple entire generations to realise that the man is actually an absolute legend and a treasure. Hats off!
real ones know the deeper lore and not just the meme

This is NOT murdering a song, this is showing it respect and love!
I actually thought "oh God, what's this gonna sound like" He did it respect for sure...totally nailed it...and that guitar playing...damn! Well done Rick Astley!
Amén 🙏
I'm sure he knows that. He's just being humble. It's a good personality trait to have
That guitar - GORGEOUS!
He'll never let it down
I'm so glad Astley decided to not just be a relic of the 80's.
So happy we still have him partying with us in 2023.
He's a national treasure. That's a fact.
A good role model isn’t he. Fame in the 80s, didn’t get too big for his boots and stayed doing what he loves fame or not. Then rode the meme with perfection really and used it to further continue what he loves with a ton of new fans. The best marketers and PR teams couldn’t have done it better since there was no rule book for what to do when you’re a massive meme. (Just don’t do what Streisand did).
Just an absolute legend! @@robertprice26

I HAVE A CONFESSION TO MAKE
Who would have ever thought that Rick Astley's best years are yet to come. What an amazing performer.
Right? It takes a special kind of artist to lean in the way he did to Rickrolling, and mount, not just a comeback, but an entirely more successful chapter.
He's awesome.
The internet gave him a lot of attention over what's essentially making fun of his song.
But instead of being bitter about it he used the attention to show the world what a great artist he is.
He had to wait for his face to catch up with his voice.
What an amazing band all together! Does anyone know if this is his band?
@@backgroundmusikThat’s such a good way to put it. He actually has a great voice! I wasn’t even intending to watch, but his performance really grabbed me.
I'm honestly surprised how WELL Rick's voice fits the lyrics and melody. Love to see a pop legend rock out from time to time.
He also even sound like Dave Grohl tbh🤘💥
@@tristanvillalontriss9220Wouldn't say that. But he definitely did the song justice.
@@tristanvillalontriss9220In their low ranges(like in the verse here) They do have pretty similar tones, but Rick Astley doesn't quite have the range grohl has in the higher end, also Rick has a bit more of a twang accent and less growl/rasp in the higher end as well. I hear what you mean tho
Agreed, amazing cover!
Look up his "FU song" cover, he really nails that one too.
That was a genuinely outstanding cover. It makes me wonder if Rick never should have been a pop star because he was always a ROCK STAR at heart. Fantastic.
it might be because he sounds a bit like David Bowie, and he didn't want to stand in that legend's shadow. I'm grateful to have heard this number, was pretty tight
No doubt
I’m gaining more and more respect for Rick. The concerts I’ve seen him involved with of late have really opened my eyes to his rock sensibilities
“Gotta promise not to stop when I say when” is a fucking LEGENDARY lyrical lick. Especially in this context…
He's done the song a lot of respect. Brilliant cover
It's amazing I'm cacking myself ha what a guy
He’s a huge fan. He bought a ticket to the Taylor Hawkins tribute just as a fan.
@@aresefyep I remember he did a great acoustic cover at the start of the pandemic and said in an interview after it was one of his favorite songs ever.
That is something I never expected I'd see. As a Foo Fighters fan I love this
I hope you've seen the sorta-inverse of this, where the Foo Fighters covered Never Gonna Give You Up (with Rick)
you should check out the acoustic cover he did awhile ago, it's amazing

Wow, his band actually looks like they're having fun and want to be there. With a performer like Rick, that says a lot about him as an artist and a man.
Didn’t know Rick could play guitar, that’s cool, and his suit is absolutely killer.
He writes, produces and plays all instruments
A real musician. A real artist.
I bet he can play pretty well but this song is legit a beginners song if you learn the acoustic it can easily be someone’s first song. But his barre chords look smooth he clearly plays at least at an intermediate-preforming level though his strumming pattern was off.
Dave explains he made the riff to hit like drums all down strokes
_ _ - _- - _ - _ _ - _ - - - -
He’s really bringing his Roy Orbison out in this performance lol it’s a good look for older guys
I mean he’s a musician of course he can lol
There's no chance you won't like this guy.
Won’t get this from any other ;)
Bulby!
Never gonna give him up.
I mean, he literally will never let you down.
Im never going to turn around !
This was beautiful. Way to go Rick! And drummer for hanging in there on the high hats. Everlong is a 16th note wrist breaker.
This cover is WAY better than I could have ever imagined. Hats off Rick, you didn't just do it justice, you kicked ass with this one
His band could not stop smiling playing that song! Probably the fastest the drummer has ever got to play 😅

Maybe he was just a joke to us once upon a time, but enough time has passed now for us to say without a hint of irony, Rick Astley is a forward-thinking music legend.
(he was never a joke. His songs were always great, even at the time, and I'm tired of pretending they weren't)
@@camannwordsmith that's so true, i thought I was the only one
I'm genuinely shocked how good this cover is, and how good he sounds after all these years. Incredible stuff.
I have genuine respect for Rick Astley for not only resurrecting his career, but doing so the right way. The man is a true talent, and he killed this cover. Everyone sounded amazing as well.
I would love to hear him do more Foo Fighters covers, we all know he and Dave Grohl are buddies, so I'm sure Dave approved of this wholeheartedly.
I bet if he covered, "Learn to Fly", he would kill that too. I hope Rick continues to do this and continues to make music for years to come.
We need a Rick Astley learn to fly cover that would be amazing
“We all know they’re buddies” do we? I didn’t
Absolutely nailed it, entire band are superb. We all know him and grohl are mates and to me this is why music is so great, great players covering each others music, paying respect to one another. Outstanding
I love foo fighters and Rick astely I am so glad he sang this as it is my second fav foo fighters song ❤
Now i gotta ask. Which is your favorite?!
💥 Congratulations to the drummer! This song is insane, hit-hats! 💥
the backup singers were such a great addition to the song. i have no idea why not many bands have tried to implement it when covering this song. so good.
Even the Foo Fighters used to do it, back when Pat would sing
@@NoButIGotCheezWhiz I know that already, which is why the backup singers here are so well put
How great is it to see everyone on stage genuinely enjoying themselves 😊
completely agree, it's brilliant. they smashed it
Especially those backup vocalists they look so happy 😁
The whole band's love for Dave & the Foos couldn't be more obvious. Captured this well-worn tune's spirit beautifully without sounding well-worn, and added their own little spins. Homie's pretty handy with a guitar too, dang.
Gotta love how he came back like a boss recently, fully embraced the meme, then proceeded to blow minds with how good he _really_ is 😈 A truly lovely man who deserves every bit of late recognition and success he's getting ✊✨
Well said, real musicians are to be admired
Agree 💯
The drummer is killing it.
It's cool to see Rick go from a forgotten rock legend to a meme and to an even bigger rock legend.
man, this performance shows how much he is a professional. He knows his skills, he pays respect, he plays with the people, he has fun!
Today’s music need a voice like his. Well done, sir. You’re not a relic from the 80s, you’re an artist of today.

shame the sound engineer didn't agree. holy shit this mix is bad.
@@Ludzig an 80s musician covering a song from the late 90s… in 2023. Just don’t forget to add that.
He did the song justice. Good for him. His most well known song was never, in my opinion, a bad song. And all the Rick Rolls helped this man's career see a resurgence. I wish him well.
I love when performers get REAL and perform what they like❤
I've never been a fan of Rick Astley's but he plays Everlong SO well. Makes me want to go see him live.
I've never been a fan of Rick Astley or The Foo Fighters, but actually enjoyed this.
I think you have just become a fan then?
@@soundofmai What kind of music do you listen to? Not being mean, just curious.
I generally listen to music outside of mainstream pop and rock, grew up with a love for stuff like Talking Heads, Pixies, Jane's Addiction etc., also love reggae, but my favorite music is abstract electronic music without vocals, such as ambient techno, dub techno and IDM, very different to this ha ha. Just clicked on this video out of curiosity and liked it more than I expected for some reason.@@TitaniumTurbine
If you're referring to those bands that I mentioned, of course they are, but they are not what I generally listen to, just what I grew up with (read the second half of my sentence beginning with "but"). Geez, how did I get here, I only wanted to make 1 small comment about liking the video, and why does every second comment online have to be analysed and treated like some debate lol.@@sammyrockywelly
I just love how he played the rhythm part the whole way through.
he played it really really well too, he's an amazing guitar player
The second he strummed I heard Everlong. I loved that The Foos sang with Rick on a Classic and an Ode to them for bringing him to sing, he plays their ultimate Classic. 👏👏👏👏. And he did really good. ❤❤❤❤
Props to the band and sound engineer, the mix sounds damn near as good as the original recording, and his voice is as strong as ever. You're a real one, Rick!
He's really quite suited to it. He clearly loves it too, when you see his smile as the backing sings come in on the chorus. A legend ressurected by a meme.
And everyone thinks hes a one-hit wonder?
I think people forget Rick is truly a musician. Voice and guitar on point and stayed original to the tempo and tone of the original while putting his own spin on it.
Well done Rick!
Nothing wrong with being a one-hit wonder. It's a heck of a lot better than being a no-hit nobody.
Wait, who called him a one-hit wonder? He has two #1 hits, the other being "Together Forever" (and yes,, it also got a ton of radio play back in the day), and three other songs that ended up in the top 10 (going by Us charts, and arguably he did better in other countries too). Crazy thing is, he probably could have been even more successful - he had a bunch of recordings for his second album destroyed in a fire, and he chose to slow down his career for family reasons in 1994. There's no doubt in my mind he could've charted well in a year like 1996 or 1997 if he truly had focused on maintaining his momentum.
You don't have to be famous to be a great musician.
that guitar tone, omg instantly melted. The crowd however, sits quietly and ponders.
And next up ... Wonderwall!
Shout-out to the backup singers, who are just incredibly cute ❤❤
I love so much the girls in the chorus, they bring so much vibe to the stage
Frrrrrr
Rick is just a legend, anything he does he does with passion and just always amazes everyone at how diverse he is as a singer
Rick surprisingly is amazing at covers.
His the Smiths covers specifically are something out of this world
Those backup singers are on top of their game and so good.
Love the allman bros guitar riff right at the end. Same tune they used for the top gear theme.
that Jessica tease was definitely the cherry on top of an amazing performance!
