The Street Fighter video game franchise that dominated arcade markets and home consoles of the 1990s endures today with a new fan base and a fresh generation of young players. When it was first released on Capcom’s arcade machines, online gaming was almost unheard of, so young people in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Japan instead found companionship in arcade halls. Few people today know that a mysterious group of Street Fighter fans from that environment would play a surprising role in the development of the series, by helping to make the franchise into a worldwide pop culture phenomenon.

Growing up as a young teen in NYC during Street Fighter 2, Mortal Kombat era was awesome. Every deli, bowling alley, comic shop, laundry store etc. had something. Everyone was the kid of a place. Bike riding to challenge people or beating older teens who would possibly punch you. Just came with it. I don't feel nothing game wise could ever bring that feeling back. Online gaming is great but nothing beats 1 v 1 at a arcade machine. No trolls, no hacks. Just you and an enemy. Best times

I was obsessed with street fighter 2, then mortal kombat came along. The first time I played mortal kombat I was 9 years old, the guy I played was sub zero and he gave me the head rip fatality, I was so shook 😂😂😂

@@gianniclaud I did. I was born 1980 so was perfect timing in that sense. And I'll be honest I didn't know about Street Fighter 2 until 1992 when my cousin rented it for Super Nintendo and then I just had to play it everywhere. Samurai Showdown, Timekillers and Primal Rage were fun too. Loved Fatal Fury. There was and this is not a made up story. Local VHS rental place called Palmer Video which were around the NYC scene. Was a Japanese boy who couldn't see the screen and his dad would stand behind him and yell out moves in Japanese to him and the kid must of been like 6 years old and he whipped everyone's buts haha. NEver forget it.
While most friends were into Graffiti the SF2 craze had it's own graffiti vibe to be known around.

I was there playing Street Fighter 2 in the arcades back in the early 90s. It was really big, u can see people lining up putting stacks of coins at the arcade machine to play it. It was a great time to play games, due to Street Fighter we can see tons of other fighting games mushroomed in the arcades. I'm glad i was born in that era. I am still playing it via my Super Famicom and Mega drive till these days with my kids.

It was wild back in the 90s when you find a modded cabinet. I remember my cousin taken me to an arcade and told us you could do hadouken's in the air and it was way faster. It blew my mind. My child mind could not understand how it was possible.

I was lucky enough to get to play one of these crazy special editions back in 93 as a kid living in England. My parents worked at RAF Mildenhall, but there was an arcade attached to the BX at nearby RAF Lakenheath that had the hotness as far as arcade fighters. Mortal Kombat, Super SFII, a NeoGeo cab with Samurai Showdown, Saturday Night Slam Masters … and this weird glitchy version of SFII where everyone moved super fast and you could do special attacks in mid air you shouldn’t have been able to do. I remember doing jumping fireballs til you went through the top of the screen and appeared at the bottom. I was 12 at the time. Magical memories from back then

how did people find out about it though.... i remember sf2 buzz being the chat everyone was talking about and most of us not knowing anything about it? you know till word of mouth spread..... again this really interests me..... as retrospectively there was no fighting game scene back in the day i presume before sf2 and the prequel was SF1
SF1 was night and day completely different..... so how did people just find out about the moves etc, its all genius and fascinating how the studio or creator went from like a poor first outing in sf1 to improving everything to what we now define as a classic.... the decisions made between Sf1 to sf2 is really fascinating and intriguing to me as a creative

The best thing I learned from a mysterious player was Guile Phantom throw. It allows me to defeat plenty of my opponents. The glitch was pretty new at the time and everyone thought it was a feature.

the amazing thing about it is its the sequel to SF1!!!!!? I mean its completely night and day in every department!!!! The Animations, the Art, the Characters, the Gameplay EVERYTHING about SF2 was like a completely different studio went and did SF2!!!??
If it was the same studio!? then what happened in the inbetween between SF1 to SF2!!!! is what interests me, the struggle, the design process! Was the lead creative the same!? I massuming thats the visionary creator.....
just everything about the sequel is perfect! The stances for instance when they complete the fireball / hadoken is beautiful, is what martial artists strive and practice for the perfect form.... and if you just compare everything to SF1..... the art for the fireball looks so much better too
i would love to watch a documentary..... no one talks about SF1 but will definitely have played it AFTER SF2 out of curiosity..... yeah the guy who masterminded SF2 interests me.... if he is the same guy etc, what decisions he chose and why etc in every department

I don't think there will ever be another arcade game that saw lines as long as SF2 created

I despised those mod/pirated versions of SF2 , but when Capcom officially released Hyper Fighting/Turbo I totally committed to it. Street Fighter and Capcom fighting games are truly the gold standard of the fighting game genre and it's been over 30 years since I was a child I've been playing them.

I didn't know the Rainbow edition wasnt offical and legit. Believe it or not, me and my friend would play it at Jockey Club when we were teenagers. How did HKJC get their hands into something so cool?
Anyways the game was fun, bit thinking back, it would probably be boring now at this day and age. All we did was throw fireballs at each other. Once you got hit, you're done cause the whole screen would be occupied with your opponent's fireballs.

Street Fighter 2 is a major influencer and redefinition of fighting games, without Street Fighter, we might not have other fighting games like Fatal Fury, The King Of Fighters, Tekken, Virtual Fighter, Mortal Kombat etc
