Normally I'm not a huge fan of collections... but look at the condition of the cars. Fantastic. There wasn't a spec of dust and all the tyres are inflated. What a breath of fresh air and kudos to Mr. Dudding for preserving an era so many of us are already missing. Good idea too having them available for commercial use, hopefully they are able to pay for themselves, but I suspect this is a labour of love. Also, if he ever wants to sell the Saab or a Stag, let me know.

Ar yes, The Lagondas. I fell in love and amazement with them at the 1982 Sydney Motor Show. A silver one to be exact. I thought they looked so modern and futuristic. I think the pick of them was the Series 4, as the lines had been smoothed out and will stand the test of time. Also by this stage, they would have ironed out a lot of the bugs.

My Mother had what I now know to have had some incredible cars- including a Lagonda in 1981, it was very unreliable! I was 10 and very embarrassed by the thing at school- all I wanted her to have was a mini metro like everyone else’s mum!! I wish I could tell her now how much I came to love her for being different!!

Great to see this collection, thank you for featuring them, it's interesting you talking about the pop up lights, on Tyrells Classic Cars he featured a 1 of 1 Lagonda Vantage, Iain did some work on it then took it for a drive, he also chatted with the owner, he ordered the car new, showing the original bill of sale, while ordering the car, he could have had the twin superchargers but he likes the pop up lights, but for Aston to fit the superchargers they would have to go where the lights are, but he didn't like that, so his is an 80's spec Vantage engined Lagonda in quite a nice metallic brown/bronze colour

We had a hardworking M reg 95 Primera Estate from approx 98 to the first scrappage scheme. Unfortunately it was a victim traded in for a brand new Mk1 Citroen C1. The Primera was a great car and apart from service and wear and tear items only ever needed a rear silencer, battery, one spring and a small patch of welding on a sill in 130k miles of use. It was slow being the 1.6 but was 16v and revved freely. What a great family wagon it was. No style but always willing to serve the Families needs. Being offered 2k for it at the end in its well used condition was too much of a good offer to refuse for my parents

Hi Matt, from Sydney, Australia. Thanks for the brief intro to this fantastic collection, even globally there all to few of them and most are in the hands of very private "hoarders" that never allow public entry. On the central coast 100klm north of Sydney was Australia's biggest private collection until around 4 years ago when due to some tax dispute it became a forced sale, this also was 100's of cars and was open to the public, sadly now gone, again all were perfect pristine examples from around the globe.
Re the MK10/420G specifically the 4.2 litre versions they are fantastic the best Jags, the best kept secret of all time. Making them eminently affordable compared to the more basic poverty spec MK2's that everyone goes crazy for as mk10's when new were double the price of a MK2. Why , well they are double the car , more power, better brakes, better gear box, better steering box, better negative earth electrical, ergonomic seats from Slumberland bedding coy, better tyres from Dunlop the special SP41 Aquajets designed just for the mk10 and the list goes on and on........
However Malcolm Sayer, Jaguars chief body designer was by trade an aerodynamicist of some standing what most punters do not however know, is the MK10 is truly special only TWO cars EVER using this aircraft design principle called laminar flow which reduces drag MASSIVELY and increases stability and handling dynamics using this elongated egg shape principle. The other car is of course the Citroen DS. To adhere to this principle the item must taper more at the rear and taper less so at the front Now think of the mk10 look from front or rear and the car has an obvious circular rounded shape a continuous curve from one sill rail up and over and down to the other side sill rail, stand above on a fruit picker or balcony and the car clearly massively tapers and puffs out to the widest point in the middle would look akin to an elongated egg and if viewed side on the curve is there too as if you start at the rear the car curves up the boot up and up & over the rear window then up and over the definitely curved roof, down the curved front screen and down the curved front bonnet. Everyone always says they look bulbous now you know why, Laminar Flow, designed by a genius and misunderstood by every average moron. Hence its puffy sides, curvaceous shape, tapered front and rear, plus radically sloping bonnet & bootlid - Laminar Flow characteristics. From Introduction in 1961 they were available with a front air-dam the FIRST car ever to have one, my mum's car had one, and there are another two in the local Jaguar club also with them they look akin to a Rolls Royce Camargue with an air-dam fitted coupled to the leaning forward stance of the top of the bonnet giving a very small frontal area for the cars huge size. then add to this the heavily skirted rear wheel arches, the totally lined front mudguard wells with zero openings to engine bay, the entirely flat underside of the car, even the sloped shape of the boot floor tapering up at the rear all assisting Laminar Flow. Plus all assist in lowering CD drag on such a large vehicle.
In real world use, drive another brand in incredibly bad weather where there are massive cross winds that want to push a car around, after having driven a different vehicle down the route, get out and drive the same route in the same weather in a mk10 you will not realize how bad it is outside unless you roll a window down, the intrinsic shape of the car keeps it stable and un-buffeted - Laminar Flow,
Throw in rain and road grime, in terrible wet weather if I use some of my cars by the time you'd have driven a mile the car will have obvious dirty road spray all along the sides. my office is almost 50 kilometers from home, there are freeways for 90% of the trip. My 1967 jaguar 420g/mk10 is cream. if it leaves home clean there are only minor showings that it is not clean after 50ks of filth , at front down low near the big curved indicators ahead of the front wheel arch there will be a small 3" square area showing spots, at the rear under the long rear bumper wrap arounds near their mounting points on the side mudguards a small almost 2" square showing some grime. then at the rear end of the front and the front end of the rear door (its widest puffiest point) there will be a collection of sandy grains attached to the paint on the outside, on the inner door a bit more, otherwise the whole car looks like it has been pressure washed, any of my other cars are totally filthy. the big Jag looks clean because of Laminar Flow, basically the filth has been sucked off the car due to its unusual shape.

I like the Lagonda, particularly the Mk.1. I remember seeing it first on Nationwide, I think Bob Wellings drove it. Very elegant in gold metallic and the smooth wheel covers. I was lucky to see it at launch at the London Motor Show.
You often hear about the electronic dash being a problem. It struck me the other day that perhaps you could modify one using the touch screen displays that feature in many cars today, esp Merc S - Class, Rolls - Royces etc. Has anyone tried this ?

While the name Lagonda sounds perhaps Italian or as though from some other continental language, it is, in fact from the native American Shawnee tribe meaning "buck's horn." The founder of the Lagonda company was born in Springfield, Ohio (as was I) and emigrated to England where he founded the company. Ohio was once home to the Shawnee tribe and Lagonda was the name of a creek and later a small settlement of Europeans near Springfield. Though the settlement is long gone, the name Laganda still figures prominently in the area, and the creek, now known as Buck Creek, still flows through Springfield.

Back in the late 80s myself and a friend went to a classic car show up in Brum, at the time I was working in the parts department in a Jag dealership, so I was used to seeing interesting and exotic cars, and I'd go to these car shows to hopefully see cars I hadn't seen before.
So at this car show someone had brought a Lagonda, it was the first time I'd seen one, and it was a WTF is going on here, the front end looked good, the rest looked a bit mundane and looked like they'd run out of design budget, probably because they had.
The sunroof was in the wrong place, but it clicked instantly that the car was meant to be chauffeur driven, and the space age dash looked like an unrepairable nightmare, so I had to ask the owner if it all worked. His reply was pretty much, "It doesn't all work all the time, but enough works some of the time to make it drivable but only sometimes, but that's British cars for you", which was something I had to agree with because I worked in a Jag garage.
    Helluva car collection, though.

Matt - whatever happened to the Lagonda that was being restored and converted to EV that you initially covered?

He said it is stalled…..can an EV stall? But anyway he said he will pick it up again once it moves again.

Frustrating when you started looking at Aston martins then got sidetracked by more mundane cars! I wondered if there would be a 1960s Aston Martin Lagonda Rapide to go with the '70s Lagondas.
