A couple years ago I went to a man's house in my local area to buy a used polisher I found on FB marketplace. After paying him I was about to leave, when I realized I'd under-payed him $20. I knocked on his door again to make things square, and he appreciated my honesty enough to open up his garage to show me what he had. And a Vantage V550 was sitting there, dark red with cream interior and wood trim. Couldn't believe how rare and amazing a car I'd stumbled upon. So butch and beautiful at the same time. He let me sit in it too. I've been fascinated with this model ever since.
I have an even better tale about a vantage. About 10 years ago over here in a small town in the tri State area they were selling one of these at the local mechanic shop. It was a rare burgundy color with black seats. At the time older exotic cars were slightly out of trend due to the newer tech coming out in the market. I almost bought it but ended up buying a classic Mopar instead, they wanted around 30k for it in great shape. Well about 6 months later down the road I was heading home and saw it sitting in the gravel driveway of a small country home. Looked like a older man bought it for a collector car. I think he had another exotic sitting out there as well but I don't remember what the other car was. Well over time I would drive by this guy's house to work every day. The Aston sat outside for a good year never moving other than here and there. Then after about two years the guy parked in the driveway and covered both cars with a tarp. That Aston sat there under a the tarp for almost 5 years never moving. Then about 4 years ago I saw that he took the wheels off both cars and put them on cinder blocks still in his driveway under a tarp. This guy must know what kind of rare exotic he has on his hands but for whatever reason, he no longer cares or is oblivious to what he's doing to these vehicles. They are still out there to this day, under a tarp next to the road. I was going to go there and see about buying the vantage or something, but I can tell by his actions something isnt right with the guy. Total waste of a rare classic.
Great tale IMO. I wouldn't let anyone come in my home and show them my 964 and let them sit in. That was really a special moment and it's nice that these things happen, I'm glad for you. To the other guy, your story is unfinished so try to do something about it. Maybe that's your opportunity.
I've heard of this car, I worked on the Virage and it's derivatives (Virage, Volante, Virage LE, Vantage, V8 Coupe, Virage LWB & Vantage LM) at Newport Pagnell for 10 years, It took 97 hours to produce the wiring harnesses for these cars, all built from scratch by a small team hidden away upstairs from the engine build area. Even though I used to see these beasts on a daily basis I have only see 2 on the British roads since I left the company in 1999
Intresting, who was manufacturing Scratch which was used for the wiring looms, is it still available,, as a lots of items, seem to have been built from it, just curious..
@@MrOrtmeier As mentioned below, I think you probably mean the Vantage Le Mans same shape as the vantage but with a blanked off grill with two large air intakes in it and also two large air vents in the front of the bonnet (Hood if you are American) it also had different shape side vents in the front wings and Magnesium 5 spoke Dymag wheels, It was fuel injected not carburettor. The V8 Zagato mentioned below was a much earlier car and looked a lot more like a Lancia Beta than an Aston Martin
I’ve worked on the 90s Virage recently. The mechanics I was teamed with to fix the car almost killed it by getting water into the combustion chamber from a flooded fuel tank
It was my dream car as a teenager, it is my dream car still. Yes, it shows some age, but the flair, the panache, the style, the brute looks. It all adds up to this masterpiece.
I was about to comment something very similar. absolutely the best looking car from this era in my eyes, old school brutish looks and sounds, all while remaining very classically tasteful.

I'm lucky enough to own a 550 in the same Royal Blue. It's an event every time it's driven, the harder you drive them the better they are. I can't think of a more unique, more driveable road car.
My farmer friend who died at 98yrs old, born in 1919, swore by the quality & ruggedness of the David Brown tractor brand. As a man raised believing 'Be American - Buy American ", I was a bit shocked when I found out his favorite tractor in 7 decades was built in Britain. He made no apologies for his loyalists view, when most farmers his age & era were John Deere , Allis, Case, Massey- Ferguson, Ford, & International Harvester brand fans.
@@wayland7150 pretty cool that Ferguson invented the same 3 point hitch used still to this day, on virtually every brand of tractor the consumer buys. A tractor without a 3 point hitch is nearly useless on any type of farm that breaks ground as a chore.
Some geeky details for you, the front headlights are Carello units shared with the Alfa Romeo ES30 SZ and the Lancia Hyena, the rear lights are the same as the McLaren F1 and originally from the Dutch built Bova coach. The wing mirrors are from the Citroen CX, these were used by many manufacturers such as Jaguar for the XJ220, the Lotus Esprit, various TVRs, Alpine A610 and many others
Don't forget the front indicators which although I've never figured out the source, seem to feature on many of Peter Stevens' cars such as Elan M100 and Maclaren F1 (albeit in a different colour combination) and Jaguar XJR15. Then we move inside to the Ford Escort and possibly Granada switchgear and vents. As someone once said (Ulrich Bez?) - thankfully many of our customers have never even been in a Ford so it's not an issue
@@energymc22 I think they were actually bespoke produced for the Elan M100, unusual for Lotus not to buy in but maybe they envisaged a high production run so developed their own, they were also used on the MVS Venturi Atlantique
I visited the factory when these were in production. The front wings and grill surround were hand formed out of aluminium sheet and then rig welded together to form one piece that was then fitted to the car. The engines were made in a small room and then wheeled across on a trolley to the test bench in a building on the other side of a main road.

One of my top favourite "brute in a suit" of all time. There was also the Vantage V600 and the Vantage LeMans, which was even crazier and had twin nostrils (similar to older V8 Vantages) with a blanked-out grille. Utterly bonkers these cars. Love them and if I ever have enough money, would love to own them.
I remember seeing these in the Dupont Registry magazines in the 90s and Ive never read a review or even seen a video on the car. Ive always thought they were a handsome coupe. Thank you for work on this video and sharing it with us. Great job!
Along with the Maserati Shamal, this has been my dream car since I discovered it in the nineties. It's a joy of a car, just surpassed by the 40 Le Mans V600 builds. What an excellent video, with the best shoots of a car I have seen so far.
I completely forgot about Shamal, and when I googled it, it hit me with feels so hard, it brought me to tears. Along with V550 these two were among my biggest idol cars in the 90s. That childhood vibe man... it just hits right to the core. Thank you for bringing this Maserati up, reminding me of yet another stunning car I fell in love with all these years ago.
I have loved these ever since seeing & driving one in a Gran Turismo game when I was a kid. I was lucky enough to see one up close a few years ago. One of my all time favourite Astons. Thank you for the video on this rare & beautiful beast!
Aston Martin is made in Newport Pagnell ( Milton Keynes ) by my home town, so we are spoiled in the fact seeing sleek and mysterious Astons driving around is fairly common place for us. But.. i'm so glad someone has finally made a tribute video to this Vantage as it is seldom talked about. It was always one of my favourites and you never see one. It was always overlooked by the DBS and a forgotten gem. A handsome brute with lavish luxury and the sound and power to match - The best of British. Great video.
Even as a kid, as always an American boy fan of American muscle, but Aston Martin, totally made me fall in love with a classy elegant British Bond style super car killer!!! I always wanted a 1995 V550 vantage!!! Still to this day, it is on my wishlist of cars to own!!!
Superb! Clarkson also described the performance and handling of these cars as akin, to strapping a Saturn V rocket to a drinks trolley. He certainly has a way with words. Very well presented piece. Subscribed...

And that's why nobody ever heard of it as in title , Aston Martin just being known to the world in this century because of new German owners of Bentley and RolsRoyce and the expectations of other German car maker to buy it
blowing it out of the park with the production on these. ive always had a soft spot for the 90s aston martins but never realized how much thought and time went into them.

10:28 - it's a British car, so it's not made of "aluminum", it's made from "aluminium". Also, my favourite car ever. They just have this brutish look that sets them apart from pretty much anything else. The only thing that comes close to the brutishness of it is my second favourite car, the Alfa SZ (not for everyone admittedly).
5yrs ago, having been very lucky to be a job working alongside AML, I had to opportunity to drive a V600 manual. I've never been so scared by somerhing so brutal. As mentioned in the video, any gear and any revs, loads of throttle produced loads of torque, and wheelspin in 3rd with a small squeal in 4th at licence loosing speeds was terrifying..., I'd love one!

My friend's dad had a V600 vantage when I was a kid. I was fortunate enough to be given a ride home one evening. He casually screamed it to 140mph down a highway. The vibration and noise was unforgettable. Amazing amazing vehicle - and sexy beyond belief.
Hands down this is my dream car. Im 58 yrs old, cars have been my passion since I was a child. I have faith I'll find one somewhere on this planet and do an amazing restoration.
Clarkson introduced me to this car when I was about 12, for the next several decades is was my favourite car in the world. The only reason it isn't still, is because I've grown out of ranking cars and picking the 'best'. But in a way this car still is, and always will be my favourite. I once hoped, that by the time I was 'older' they would depreciate enough for me to buy one.... Oh well.
These videos are always so amazing. DTS’ infinite amount of car history knowledge combined with a gorgeous aesthetic. It also helps the storytelling that DTS was there when Shelby won Le Mans in that Aston Martin.
Indeed, the ability to bring first-hand accounts from the period are what have always made these videos so good. I think he missed the mark with the Rimac episode by not comparing to his experience when he first test-drove the Electrobat at launch.

One of the most genuine BTS releases that I have seen so far, i.e. an automobile ode to a truly remarkable and particular car brand and model up to that moment in time, well done.
Had a poster of this monster on my wall as a kid. Always loved how huge it was and the sound was just phenomenal. Still have the VHS of Clarkson on cars where he pits it in a drag race against some of the beauties of the 90's.
What a visually stunning experience this video was, your cameramen / writers really know how to make an epic video. First one I saw from your channel, instant subscribe! Take care folks and never stop driving.
Of course I know this car! And have known it for more than a decade. This was in Test Drive 5 from 1998! One of the very first video games I ever played in my life, circa '99-01 and although I played the demo version, the Vantage was one of the opponent cars you race against. And who can forget the legendary DVD "Jeremy Clarkson Unleashed on Cars"? The drag race at the end will forever be etched in my memory along with that epic 90s trumpet music accompanied by the Vantage's glorious V8 exhaust noise. I have to say, this is probably my favourite Aston Martin ever made and I'd put this above any Aston made after it. Not just because it's from the era I was born in, but because I absolutely love how it looks - inside and out, how it sounds and how it was made.
Been an absolute hero car of mine since it’s release, finally got a passenger ride in one a few years ago and it absolutely lived up to what I’d hoped it would be.
When top gear did a review decades ago with a red one, I watched it over and over again. Such a beautiful car. Didn’t know about the Diablo race as that’s actually my all time favourite car having owned one for a few years
Writing this note from Exmoor in England. That, my friend was an outstanding, professional video of my all time favourite car, Been hooked on the marque from a very early early age (my farming family ran David Brown tractors). Instant subscribe......
My friends dad had one new in 1999 with the factory power upgrade (600bhp?) He took me out in it, a passenger ride I will never forget. For a performance car, it also managed to be extremely comfortable - I think Recaro developed the seats for these. The last Aston I liked before they all started to look the same. The Valour is the exception - what a car, but only 110 to be made.
Beautiful cars, the change away from completely hand built made sense to increase the numbers available and cost effectiveness, but these older ones ...just SO special because of limited numbers and hand built, though if it wasnt any good, that wouldnt have mattered, but they ARE serious performance cars too as you say. When British cars used V8`s, you knew they werent messing around lol adding in superchargers ...just crazy awesome, a burnout machine but one owned by the wealthier, upper class and perhaps well dressed driver, this was not a crass commoners car 😝 . The boat thing, yup, that motor yacht sound (or ocean liner lol), just torque galore and a dignified " oh, ...more power sir ? of course, right away sir ..." . These videos just get better and better, MUCH appreciated, watched several times now, and im sure will watch again before your next offerings, many thanks all, very fine work . Dan.
I have been fortunate to own a few Aston Martins, including a DB9 which after I had some modifications done to it, became my favourite of them all. But I did always lust after one of these V550's and at one stage had a chance to fund a V600 Works Racing Edition...when they were way more cheap than they are now !! Thank you for this presentation, earned a subscribe from me!!
Exquisitely presented, on what could be only described as a remarkable piece of automotive history. Well done Derek and the team behind the scenes. Thoroughly enjoying the content.
Very cool video. I will admit this is the first one of your BTS I've watched Derek and it was excellent. So cool to see all the old video inserts as you talk about all the history and stuff. Honestly not a bad looking car and the power sounds crazy especially for that time and that type of car.
Enjoyable article, thanks. Might I suggest a modern day equivalent to it, made from 2010 to 2020 (though I don’t think it’s ever been officially imported into the US). The BMW M550d, with 381 - 400 hp, 740 - 760 Nm in factory specification. Straight 6 diesel, with either 3 or 4 sequentially mounted turbos. It’s not an M5, but doesn’t try to be, especially as it returns an average 8 L/100 km (35 mpg). Oh, and delimited it will do about 195 mph. The V600 and Le Mans are actually very slightly different cars, although I guess you could call the latter the "V600 Le Mans" if that's what you meant 🙂
This is still my dream car! Ever since Jeremy Clarkson had it on topgear. Has to be this model tho, not a fan of the styling of the more powerful one. V600(?).anyway, maybe one day, when I win the lottery. Has to be the 'launch colour', green over tan tho
Wow ! I'm impressed ! Always had a soft spot for the vantage ! Why buy a Rolls or a Bently when you can have a vantage ? Great video folks ! Good balance of history, facts & figures, pro's & con's etc, the fact that the narrator seemed in awe of this, very English Muscle car, sharing our inspiration for the bi-turbo overkill, with hints of " british understatement". And as we say in Devonshire, "That'll pull yer caravan mate !" 👋🤚
This body design is one of my favorites, and is also one of my favorite Bond cars. It had a rocket sled feature on it. It was a Timothy Dalton Movie, The Living Daylights.
Me too - I assume originally special order for someone important. Probably used the GM box as found on Bentleys of the time, not much was out there that could handle 550lb ft
My uncle has one as well. Parked next to a pantera de tomaso with a Cleveland in it. Both are weird ass cars. Beautiful though.
@@rabajdajr3001 That was not better! :-(

@MrOrtmeier You're probably thinking of the V8 Zagato.
Either that or the V600 Le Mans.

Straight outta the Ford parts bin
Yup, at least they replaced the blue oval on the airbag cover. Literally, it's the least they couldve done.
That steering wheel was in every Ford and some point in time. Aston repaid the favor by putting its nose on the Fusion. 😂
My Taurus SHO had that wheel.

What a beautiful machine! ❤
It was featured on Clarkson’s unleashed on cars where an “apparently” stock Cerbera smashed everything in the qtr including the then current 911 Turbo
"Aston Martin has a long and illustrious history of nearly going out of business" gave me the giggles 😂
Another wonderful episode!
The reason for that is that the cars really ain’t that good but the panache that goes along with one somehow is.

@stanger427 you are correct

I think he missed the mark with the Rimac episode by not comparing to his experience when he first test-drove the Electrobat at launch.
Legend has it Hyphen educated Shelby about his own vehicle.
@Landon-si5xc Stop trying to push your extremist beliefs on people,
Allah is a figment of muhammad's imagination it's obvious because both are as disturbed as each other
The koran was supposedly the word of god but it's full of I have read that book and it's full of violence, hatred, barbarism, immorality, intolerance and oppression I can't understand how anyone could take such vile teachings to be the word of god and as for the person the words were given to well he is as vile and reprehensible a human that could be found. The world would be a happier, better and more peaceful place if that book had never existed.
The following are errors about science in the koran.
Geocentrism,Setting and rising place of the sun, Earth and heavens created in six days, Earth created before stars, Earth and heavens torn apart, Heaven made from smoke, Seven Earths, Seven heavens, Implied similar size and distance of the sun and moon,Moon split in two, Nature of the moon's light, Meteors as stars fired at devils, The entire heaven has a night and day, The sky/heaven as a ceiling,The sky/heaven as a guarded ceiling, The sky/heaven as something that can fall, Heavens to be rolled up, Stars as something that fall, The cause of shadows changing length.
Biology errors in the koran,
Evolution, First humans created from clay, Adam and Eve, Embryology, Semen originating between the backbone and ribs, Embryo formed from semen, Humans created from a clot of blood, Bones formed before flesh,All organisms created in pairs, Fetus in three layers of darkness, Functions of the heart, Source and purity of Milk
Geology and meteorology errors include,
Flat Earth, Permanent barrier between "the two seas" of fresh and salt water, Mountains as pegs which prevent the earth from shifting, Mountains cast upon Earth, Disregard of evaporation in water cycle, Mountains of hail in the sky, Allah smites with thunderbolts
Zoology errors in the koran, Ants converse and recognize humans, Bird flight as a miracle
So if the koran was the word of god then he doesn't know anything about the rules of physics, chemistry, geology and biology. That's so many mistakes from a supposedly "all knowing" god, the idea is just laughable yet it's sad that so many people believe it and it's the reason why education isn't encouraged in most muslim majority countries.
One of the most genuine BTS releases that I have seen so far, i.e. an automobile ode to a truly remarkable and particular car brand and model up to that moment in time, well done.
Brilliant video. Truly superlative. Looking forward to more of your work, sir. Thank you.
I just can't get over that 80s Ford steering wheel. Right in your face. The V550 indeed has a sense of humor.
Had a poster of this monster on my wall as a kid. Always loved how huge it was and the sound was just phenomenal.
Still have the VHS of Clarkson on cars where he pits it in a drag race against some of the beauties of the 90's.
i will never forget the first time i saw an aston martin lagonda: it is amazing how low that car is when you are standing next to it.
Great episode, Hyphen. My favorite Vantage has to be the one Bond’s lady-friend drives into the sunset at the end of No Time To Die (‘87 V8 Saloon)
The vantage, the real one, is a master in design
Been an absolute hero car of mine since it’s release, finally got a passenger ride in one a few years ago and it absolutely lived up to what I’d hoped it would be.
Incredible stuff! Great job as always hyphen😎
My ultimate dream car. Old school luxury, beautiful (to me) and distinct style, and gobs of muscle.
Just found this vid by accident, but its production quality kept me watching till the end.
The coolness of this car is off the charts. It is beyond comprehension how want-able this car is
@1:07, that’s the same steering wheel I have in my 1994 Ford Bronco.
Dan.
The styling is really unique...love it! I wish it was a manual though... 😛
Great video and storytelling!
They normally were - with a 6 speed ZF unit as found in the Corvette. This automatic one seems to be a rare special order.
The shots of this car earned you a new subscriber! Beautiful car and an equally beautiful presentation of it.
Lovely car. Great video. First time viewer.
I think this is one of the most beautiful cars ever made, it's got presence and looks
Your automotive content is just one of a kind on UA-cam you're doing God's work keep it up
Exquisitely presented, on what could be only described as a remarkable piece of automotive history. Well done Derek and the team behind the scenes. Thoroughly enjoying the content.
Excellent documentary film! Full of great archive footage, factually correct and beautifully filmed and produced. Great work.
This channel is so freaking underrated I can’t take it
You really make excellent videos
Great video. Childhood favorite right there
Very cool video. I will admit this is the first one of your BTS I've watched Derek and it was excellent. So cool to see all the old video inserts as you talk about all the history and stuff. Honestly not a bad looking car and the power sounds crazy especially for that time and that type of car.
That 90’s Ford steering wheel though lol cool car for a luxury Mustang!! I’ve ALWAYS wanted one of these works of art!
The second of the two that I have owned (both triple turbo) went to a tuner who lifted output to roughly from 380 hp to 425 hp/810 Nm without harming the fuel consumption
This car is so beautiful it makes me want to cry. It’s as close to perfect as is possible.
So insane to me, that a bunch of bruhs in a big shed shaped every inch of steel by hand. Marvelous.
Oh my yes. The V600 "Le Mans" is even rarer and has those twin nostrils where the grille was.
I was familiar with the Vantage...but this and the v600 I was not!
The V600 and Le Mans are actually very slightly different cars, although I guess you could call the latter the "V600 Le Mans" if that's what you meant 🙂
Seriously cool video and narration mate
Great video superb cinematography and what a brute of a car superb 👍👍👍
Loved it!! Very relaxing video.
Wow. Bravo. Outstanding video on all levels.
Absolutely beautiful car that I have never heard of... Great video and I love the foxbody steering wheel! lol
Beautiful car, thank you for posting this video.
This is still my dream car! Ever since Jeremy Clarkson had it on topgear. Has to be this model tho, not a fan of the styling of the more powerful one. V600(?).anyway, maybe one day, when I win the lottery. Has to be the 'launch colour', green over tan tho
Keep it up, these videos are great!
Wow ! I'm impressed ! Always had a soft spot for the vantage ! Why buy a Rolls or a Bently when you can have a vantage ? Great video folks !
Good balance of history, facts & figures, pro's & con's etc, the fact that the narrator seemed in awe of this, very English
Muscle car, sharing our inspiration for the bi-turbo overkill, with hints of " british understatement". And as we say in Devonshire, "That'll pull yer caravan mate !"
👋🤚
This was my favorite car in the 90's. I used to walk past one in the showroom window on Park Lane every day on my way to work. Beautiful machine.
This body design is one of my favorites, and is also one of my favorite Bond cars. It had a rocket sled feature on it. It was a Timothy Dalton Movie, The Living Daylights.
What a wonderful review, subbed. Thank you
Best ever looking AM.
Nice video/essay. I enjoyed it a lot.
Great review - enjoyed this.
Really enjoyed this, just found your channel. Love your cinematography and editing too. Thumbs up from the uk liked and subscribed.
Fantastic video about a car about which the is a real lack of content. A genuine dream car for me
What a freaking great, fun video, thank you! 🙏🤘
Some wonderful cinematography on display
I thought they all came with 6-speed manual transmissions. This is the first time I've seen one with an automatic. Awesome car either way!
Me too - I assume originally special order for someone important. Probably used the GM box as found on Bentleys of the time, not much was out there that could handle 550lb ft
Very well done review of the car! Thanks.
beautiful production and direction with the video
Your music is always on point.
Need for Speed 3 & 4 made the biggest impact on my automotive tastes forever. And these 2 games made me love the supercars of the 90s the most.
this car cannot be commented upon. No words can do it justice.
One of the great mysteries of life. Did the Diablo lift? Thanks for the awesome video. I learned a lot.
Good work Tam - Scott, nice episode !
Great video!!
