All of these I really enjoyed, but my heart is set on the Soul Food - I like my drive to be bright and reasonably transparent, and that's exactly what I hear from the Soul Food.
I really appreciate your demo of these pedals. I've been waiting for this shootout from you guys!
Fuck me that archer is impressive.
Glad you guys enjoyed this & there must be 100s of other similar shoot outs we could do (& probably will do!). It should be noted that all I'm doing here is picking the tone I like best - I'm not trying to say you should all go & buy a pedal just because I like it! And also, all 3 of these pedals (as will any pedal) will sound different with a different guitar/amp/player combo. I for anyone that thinks any of these blind fold demos are fixed to choose an expensive pedal - they're not!! If you want proof of that, go find the Squier vs Fender video where I pick a Classic Vibe Tele over a Custom Shop Tele as the one I thought was best!
CaptAnderton Firstly why did you delete my previous contribution, was it too near the truth and you wanted to hide something? Nevertheless if you really want to have credibility as an 'independent' retailer you shouldn't be saying anything about your preferences, it can only influence the less experienced players who dont know any better. Its about time you and Chappers grew up and were more professional, impartial and developed a system to compare, build, sound application, versatility, tonal range , durability inn relation to the price of the products you are ' reviewing' I use that term loosely because they sound more like sales pitches not reviews. The thing is a guy sitting down playing his favorite guitar tiffs through a pedal or amp for 10 mins and then saying ' I like this' is not a review. Please find some new riffs to play they are boring. Why not get some proper pro players in who gig, tour, and record proper records. This pedal is good for this application because........ If yo'u cant think of any more adjectives other than , 'awesome' or 'sick' or 'cool' or the like, get some people in who have a command of the language and can actually explain the sound etc. You could actually steal a a march on your competitors by announcing how much profit you make (or mark up) so that there is complete transparancy in your dealings with your customers, no other retailer does this. The problem I have with you guys is I dont see where the schoolboy humour and serious business/musicican starts and finishes. Do you really think you are picking up all the sales from customers spending £1000 - £5000 when your manner is childish and infantile. Time for a re-think guys!. Bet you dont have the courage to print this.
I think Gal7615 needs to get out more. These videos are just a bit of fun man, chill the F out!!! If you are really that against what they do then don't watch. What a douche.
MrMannydac Dear Mr Mannydac, I appreciate your concern about getting out more, I assume its your way of trying to insult me, sorry but you failed. It says more about your lack of appreciation about the healthiness of having other peoples opinions. The videos are not just a bit of fun. Now you are revealing your naivety. I quote ' Hope this little video helps a few of you blues fans choose a tasty new pedal!' Perhaps you didn't read that in the introduction. Lastly I am not 'against' what they do I am for it. I want them to be better, maybe that went above your head? You see I didn't accuse anyone of being douche! Your are being rude and your apparent indignation is probably fueled by lack of perception and experience. But don't worry you will be better when you have have finished your School education.
Gal7615 oh calm down. These videos are fun and entertaining. They certainly don't harm Andertons. If you've got £1000-£5000 to spend on gear then good for you. You might want to spend it on an attititude adjustment though. Perhaps you should shop elsewhere?
Colin Plumb Dear Colin, I am perfectly calm, Thanks. Yes the videos are designed to be fun and perhaps entertaining but their real function is to sell product. Be clear on that, Lee Anderton wouldn't last 5 mins in business unless he sells product and a lot of it. So he may do different types of videos, to appeal to different customer groups and that's fine, Anybody with any retail experience knows about customer segmentation I'm not complaining about that. What I am saying is be clear and transparent about pricing, dont try to disguise the real motives with humour . Please explain how you spend money on attitude adjustment ? Is this a clumsy snipe at suggesting I have an attitude? Well sadly I dont. I do have a inquiring mind that's where you and I probably differ .You are happy to accept what is presented to you and cant understand there may be other forces at work .Thee are things is this world you have no idea about . Why should I shop eleswhere Andertons would prefer if all his customers spent £1000 per purchase rather £50, or perhaps if you can afford a set of strings and a pick? you are his target market, I dont think so.
For how much that Soul Food is, it sounds incredible. Great video, I like these shootouts. Keep it up!
Fellas thank you so much for doing this video, it was very helpful. I have been trying to decide between these options but have not found consistent and/or good quality reviews/demos in order to truly compare. I appreciate you gave the spectrums from clean to cranked gain on a setup of known gear that are clear sounding so as to not color over the sound of the pedals.
Love watching your videos. Keep being awesome!
huge fan of your videos! always a wonderful way to enjoy a cup of coffee or just relax after work. These blind shootouts are definitely some of the best, please do more.
Cant wait for the Duesenburg video I see lurking behind you ☺
Rob your shredding inspires me to keep teaching myself guitar! I hope to be able to rip it up like you one day man! And capt i love your playing just as much for when im in a chill mood! Keep at it guys!
Omg I love the sound of the soul food!
Great video as always!
Absolutley loving the new intro and outro!
The Soul Food and a Nano Small Stone from electro harmonix as well is just such a warm and comfy combo! I love the soul food, it is so easy combinable with other pedals :D
You guys are great and I love your videos! They brighten my day!
I get excited when you publish new videos. They're always entertaining!
Two things I personally want to see, are pickup and tone wood comparisons. I have never seen them done properly, even on your channel so far, except for the Seymour Duncan one a few months ago (the tone wood one quite some time ago wasn't valid because you and the captain strum differently).
Anyway, cheers!
Love the new intro track, sounds bad ass! Mon the banjo!
Very Nice playing Capt, I really enjoyed it !
Marc-Andre C +1 on Lee's playing. I'd rather jam with him than Rob. Lee is a tasteful player with tonnes of soul.
Must be why he likes the Soul Food.
3:55 best sound of the video. I enjoyed the Soul Food the best, but only on specific settings. The other two were better all-around, the soul food when it hit that sweet spot was 10/10.
Jonjey Comms
3:55 and 5:03, yep
Thanks guys, I really enjoyed the comparisons! I personally preferred the Kalamazoo pedal!
I love these guys - so entertaining and education in my opinion...nice job.
Love you guys. Best reviews ever.
Fabulous. Loved the lovepedal
nice playing man, could listen you playing that all day, personally i like the soul food..
really cool non-bias comparison!
personally i really like the growl and grit of the soul food though, i use it for all sorts of hardcore punk, post rock, shoe gaze, ambient and blues!
The kalamazoo sounds fantastic, so juicy, pretty damn close to the drive sound I ve had in my head. Such a pitty its so freaking expensive.
Ending on a bombshell? Nice Top Gear tribute!

15:16 RJ Archer
15:35 Captian Lee's Summation and Favorite
The best part of this is that you guys always use the more accessible Fender amp for the tests. Keeps it honest. Great review, guys, been digging your channel lately.
The best way to spend a study break \m/
Same here, I'm at lunch break between lectures! ;)
fnhoj95 +1
Pablo ortuño believe it or not, i am a testdriver, and i just stopped the car to watch this...my boss will kill me when i get back with the car...
Pe Peroni LoL I was watching it in the hospital between having my ECG and my blood test, beats having to stare at all these sick looking fuckers around me : )
I have the archer ikon and the kalamazoo black caucus, and i love twice 🎸🤘 great vidéo
This was über helpful as I have a Soul Food but had been looking at the Archer.
I'm leaving this comment before watching the video. But I love the blind tests. I think you can hear the tones of any pedal better when you're not visually fixated on packaging and marketing. More videos like this please. Do 1 for delays, reverbs,,,,,,
That was awesome guys!
I have the Archer, I love it, it adds just a little crunch to the amp without being too oppressive.
YES!! We need more videos where captain lee is doing the playing!
Loved the Archer. Definitely the best tool for enhancing the whole rig!
Great video! I love how Rob keeps saying, ok I'm going to put everything back in the center. And no one thought to ask, Rob do you mean the Centaur? 😜
Lee has really improved as a player during the last year or so. Brilliant playing Captain and keep it blue!
I have the Soul food absolutely love it the best value in an overdrive. I seriously recommend checking it out.
daaaamn captain! you got some great feel goin on there
Archer. Sounds like the most transparant one to me. I love it.
Koen De Bie rr
Fo Sho!
if it's "transparent" then you can't hear it
That Soul Food sounds awesome! I should totally buy one!
cap has progressed as a player so much. It is really nice hearing a blues tone progress from my two favorite channel hosts.
chappers has a great sound too though, dont get me wrong.
The Archer and Lovepedal were easy for me to identify. Those lovepedals have such sweet compression and just the right amount for my style! I love the Kalamazoo but I already have 2 eternitys. I want the Archer!
I love captains playing. so soothing :)
Ahhhh, I love the new ending!
Good demonstration guys, I agree that the kalamazoo is a nice smooth OD pedal, but you can really hear the clarity and power valve driving tone of the Archer, and I assume that you were running it at 9v and not 18v which would give you even more headroom?
having owned the Soul Food I can honestly say that it is just not in the same league as the Archer and the kalamazoo is in a different category to the Archer.
I’d happily play any of those pedals. I actually own a Soul Food and love it. I get why some folks would prefer the more transparent, weightier tone of the other pedals. But I am predominantly a rock rhythm player, and I dig the light dirt/crunch I get from the SF.
Much prefer the split intro this way, not too longwinded but still ace :D
Tobias Hawthorne Agreed!
Please do more drive pedal blind tests! Love it
Good comparision of the pedals... got the soul food and that is one sweet spot pedal if you know what I mean. Possibly the best drive pedal I've had! 👍
Great vid Rob! When you consider the Soul Food is a third of the price of the other two, that really is an amazing little pedal. Any chance you'd consider doing something similar with the Proco Rat and a few clones? Thanks for everything!
Love the caps playing, love the archer
I see some Duesenberg guitars on the wall. Hopefully they'll review them soon :)
Out of the three, I happened to like the Soul Food best. It added a bite to the sound instead of an over-bite. A little more of mellow distortion for a sound that I prefer when I'm looking for an extra oomph! The other two sounded good too, but for what I've been looking for the Soul Food tickled my ear best.
I own a Archer and I love it. Pairs well w other pedals. Though I was considering the Kalamazoo until it came out. As Captain said its got a great drive sound. Sounds kinda like a Black Crows Tone to me. But love the transparency of the Archer. All are great pedals though!
I picked up the Black version of the = Kalamazoo earlier this year (2018). I was using it as my main distortion pedal after stacking it on top of the Amp Eleven. Seeing this video, I think I'm definitely using it wrong! When I go home today, I might just swap it to the front of my board and roll off the tone a bit. One thing I really like on the Kalamazoo is the "Glass" knob that turns up the "glassy" treble sound without sacrificing bottom end.
It seemed to me that Cap'n liked the Archer best during the initial tests, and concluded that he liked the Soul Food least during the second tests, but perhaps there's been cut footage that implied otherwise?
I definitely think Rob should have plugged the pedals in in the order he plugged them in initially for that final test, doing it in a different order during a blind demo is a bit confusing, especially for pedals that have such subtle differences.
God damn, you really need to record something, Captain Lee! Thanks for listening and posting more Capt Strat Blues!
That Archer tho....Tone. Ended up buying one and plan on also getting the gold to stack with it. Love it.
Dusenberg guitars on the wall! Very nice.
Best playing this time around !
Great demo! I think I'd choose the Kalamazoo
I definitely preferred the Archer.
PS: Please do more of those blind tests!
Good bit of fun and enjoyed the Captain's playing but the irony is the drive channel on the Fender Hot Rod deluxe sounds very similar to the pedal that was chosen! I recently bought the Fender Hotrod deluxe III FSR in lacquered tweed with a Jensen speaker (from Andertons) and drive channel is so good I've stopped using my OD pedals which, includes the Soul Food!
Love how the intro was split into intro and outro.
I love you guys!
The Archer clean with a small amount of gain and few db of boost to the volume brings many an amp to life. You get some really nice harmonics on a clean channel, whilst keeping the sound very transparent. Best OD pedal I've ever bought.
Love a Kalamazoo though too!
Modded my soul food with the original germanium diodes and it made the sound so much smoother and less harsh on the ears. Probably my favourite overdrive now
#1 and #3 were really nice. #2 barely sounded like an electric guitar to me. #1 was the sweetest.
Ooooh! Duesenbergs in the back. Delightfull guitars and so pretty. Please post the vid of these beauties soon ;)
The Centaur blew away the two. Just not the grind that the captain thinks he needs. That push sounded amazing at any drive amount!
Great video and convincing me to own the new Klone! Good enough for Mike Campbell good enough for me!
Would have been cool to have the Wampler Tumnus in the mix with these 3.
Solid video!
As an owner of the Soul Food, I kind of use it more as a boost because it has that treble knob. If I'm using my fuzz but I want it to be a little brighter, it's perfect or for a dirty tone. But it's not a bad pedal. With humbuckers it gets a good Black Keys type sound.
It depends on the kind of music you're playing, and the amp you're using. This really a shoot out. This was "how do each of these pedals sound through a Fender Deville" or whatever they used.
Chapman and The Captain should get a Podcast. That would set the guitar tone more in focus.
Michael Christensen I would love a podcast from these two, great idea =D
Michael Christensen dude...thats actually a decent idea..
Michael Christensen Captain should video randomly walking up to customer & serving them (and check their response when they realise who he is!) at Anderton's.
I'd have to go with the Kalamazoo.
Well where are you going?
I must say, I do love watching you guys. Also, this is the first time I've seen the Captain play in 'his' style. THAT is how I would love to play. Still a novice unfortunately. :-( But that is the style I want to be able to play some day. Any tips?
I have/had all three pedals and for my ears the Archer has been the best for my setup to achieve some fantastic crisp overdriven tones. I also own a Klon KTR and I'd dare to say that the Archer for me is my preferred choice. They're all great though and for the money the Soul Food is a cracking good pedal.
That Squier is amazing.
The Archer for the Clon sound 100% I don't think the other two are doing the same thing at all. The Kalamazoo sounded a bit Angry Charlie-ish to me and the Soul Food was a bit harsher. That Archer Clon clone is very good!
The Soul Food also has an internal switch to select between true bypass and buffered bypass. Buffered bypass is almost necessary in some pedal configurations, specifically how the pedal behaves in front of or after other pedals like a wah.
The archer is the only one that sounds like a klon.
JRad. Used to make KTRs for Finnegan
Ending on that **** bombshell. Is this the new Top (guitar) Gear?
That archer is so nice! I want one
Yes Rob Chapman , those darn stubborn centaurs.
Archer by a whisker for me. I think that 'glassy' - like clarity sold me on it...practically makes the Strat sing. Would think that makes it an excellent stacking pedal. That Soul Food was extremely surprising thou. I could see a rig with the Archer and Soul Food on it.
I must say I like the archer one best as well.
Man your the best I wish u would make it to las Vegas nv when you come to the us
I love to hear the captain play
5:03 thats the sound
Santiago Trigo Yes!!
Santiago Trigo I still like Tumnus. Idk if Soul Food would suit my rig. I like the higher output gain of the Wampler.
My (current) rank 1 kalamazoo, 2 soul, 3 archer. But I'd be happy with either of those frankly.
The Kalamazoo is pretty sweet. Perfect on it's own or for gain stacking with other quality pedals.
3:24 THe Capt. Plays the Blues. Love it make it a whole album and call it The Capt. Feels the Blues. Love that playing /Tone.
I've heard great things about the Piedmont Custom Electronics "Aluminum Falcon" being almost a part for part replica of the Klon.
For less boutique pedals, the Rook Overdrive by Mojohand is apparently very close as well.
As for those three, its got to be the Archer.
soul food is one of the best "pedal per penny" pedals out there. very inexpensive yet you get a very good approximation of the klon sound (a 2,500 dollar sound!)
The Capn really loves that modded squire
I want that Soul Food!!!!!
Wow! The difference between Soul Food and Archer is bigger than I thought.
I went with Mosky's Silver Horse. Their Golden Horse is also quite good. The Silver Horse has the Soft & Normal switch for a Voice clipping option that is relatively transparent itself. Just a little bit more is my perception of what a Klon circuit is about at any setting. It's enhancing the amp as an OD & can also be used as a clean boost pedal. Mosky's are sub $ 30 pedals here in 2020. Maybe Igot what I paid for, maybe I ended up with the best value pedal of any Klon out there ? I think any Klon comparison is incomplete without the original circuit in the mix or even the SMT PCB version of the KTR in the mix as well. Maybe these others take a lot of the variability out of the original Klon, the tolerances and no 2 sound alike anyway. That probably holds for these pedals as tolerances aren't unique to any mass production lots. That's why I went with a Mosky partly, like any of them, there are better & worse, rather than saying there are good or bad ones. The Mosky pedals are low risk investment as to whether the pedal is a keeper or flipper.I really see more of the higher end Klon clones for resale, Maybe because the affordable one's just work and were so affordable that it's just something that is kept or passed on as re-gifted ?
I'm going to purchase the Soul Food pedal TODAY
+The Gospel of Mark Picked one up the other day. It's going to completely replace my tube screamer for live gigs. LOVE Soul Food!
+Parker Hatcher works really well with my micro terror
+Parker Hatcher works really well with my micro terror
I know this comment was 8 months ago, but I hope you love it, mate. My Soul Food is my main boost/OD pedal and I haven't looked back.
I love my Soul Food !!!
