His fictional satire was quite funny irony, und he ist missed much. I have both of his
full show HBO Specials "Jammin' in New York & Back in Town [New York]" recorded
on older VHS tapes...I consider them classic. :-)
But he much exaggerated most every topic he spoke about in his comedy routines.
This act of over-stating, misleading, und misinforming (intentional or ignorance)
much differs from das intended, established, defined, meaning of any past or present
Philosophy.
I can possibly consider him once a Satiric Urban Muse?...But NOT a Philosopher
of any discipline. :-)
His conclusions may have occasionally been Liberal Socialistic beliefs, but they
were never Liberal Art, Doctrine, or "Proper Unbiased Research Method" worthy of
Journal Article.
Isn't it impressive enough that he ist remembered a legendary American comedian
who entertained millions with his sarcastic witticism? :-)

Dave was the only one not laughing the entire time. I thought this entire standup set was perfectly comedic with philosophical tones. But, if coming up with ways to execute someone is "philosophical" then I'm fuckin Socrates.

Carlin sculpted the second half of his career on the hypocrisy of society, and would tackle just about every subject.
I prefer his routine about climate change. It was perfect and right on.

Prosecutors use their position as a stepping stone into politics.. they will lie and withhold evidence for a win.. they always want the win. Over 200 people have been released from death row.. and in all cases the prisacuters fought to keep them there even though they KNEW they were wrong.... simple math tells us we MUST have executed several innocent people if dna has proven 200 false convictions.. that alone should be enough to end the death penalty

Carlin was way ahead of his time. He knew what was up. He never cut any slack. In his last years he was more of a philosopher

It's a legal thing. There have been instances where a person survives the drugs during the Lethal Injection, if the prisoner then suffers and dies from infection (because no alcohol was used) the family of the prisoner would have a damn good lawsuit against the State. The State would be absolutely screwed.
You should check out No Rights by Carlin. It's one of his last specials before he died and it's so timely right now.
You see, the owners of this country know the truth. It's called the American dream. Cause ya have to be asleep to believe it.

Love the reaction, guys. George has had a huge impact on my life, and my ways of thinking. He was truly a genius and a master wordsmith. Two others you should see are his bit on education, and his piece about saving the planet will really make you THINK. If fact, many of us here in the states refer to him as ‘the thinking man’s comic.’ Cheers, guys!

I thought that as well but came to the realisation that he would not have been tolerated much longer by "the owners", who would have had him cancelled in the same way that the putrid Australian purveyors of pure bullshit, cancelled Barry Humphries (RIP) in his persona as Dame Edna Everidge. His wide popularity made no difference to those douche-bags. But . . . times are a--changin'.

This is the second upload I've watched from 3 and I gotta say, you guys are alright :)
He reached the point, as many great comedians do, that he didn't necessarily need a humorous twist. He would still hit you with a punchline, but he was just saying so many truthful things in very funny ways that truth and his comedy were hand-in-hand (though you may not have agreed with his politics/opinions).
"Seven Dirty Words" is another good one...
This style of Carlin’s you’re talking about is exactly what you’re watching. It always has been this way. Earlier in his career he was much less edgy, no less original and funny, but not so edgy. I saw him live in 1975, and he was a friggen hoot! The seven words you can’t say on TV, was the prime bit, among many, but even today, the seven words bit is a crackup! He was 100% original in all his comedy, and if you hear him from 75’ today, you’d laugh just as much! A brilliant comic and social commentary like NO ONE else. RIP George, thanks for the laughter!!!

Carlin has reinvented his comedy from the 60's, wearing a suit and tie, all clean, to the 70's... 7 words you can't say on TV, Vietnam, Ali.. etc. It's totally evolved through the years.
Carlin's goal was to draw a line that wasn't meant to be crossed and then bring you across it with him anyway while you laughed your ass off the entire time. He always pulled it was off and always left you something to think about at the same time.

Morbid, yet hilarious!
Carlin's shtick was really about language. He loved words. The way they sounded and what they meant. So his favorite jokes were really about making you think about the alternative meaning behind the language we use to talk about commonplace things. If you really want to get a sense of his thing, look up some of the material from "Occupation: Foole" and "Toledo Window Box". In particular, his bits about fairy tales, and the extended version of his infamous "7 words you can't say."

When you do skits in the middle of a set you miss why he's going on the rant he's taking. He was making a point of people saying the sanctity of life is important when it comes to abortions but in the same breath are for the death penalty.
George Carlin: The Philosopher Comedian
I grew up with Carlin. He is an influence for everyone after him. Chapelle. Burr. Ron White. Bless them all! I could have made a list a mile long.
New Jersey around 2000. That's when and where I saw him live too. You may have heard me because I was obnoxious, like I was at a Rush concert.
I remember that from the beginning of the show, there was a lone police officer standing in front of the stage facing the audience just watching, all stoic like a statue. Then after about 30 minutes, he walked away. Some of us in the audience theorized that he was there because of some received or perceived threat we hadn't heard about. It was also notable that some of what George was saying at the time was really harsh comical criticism of law enforcement.

i could be wrong but actually at the end of that the "twist" you guys were thinkin was gonna happen, was he told/showed the audience how easy it was to "rile" them/a large group of people up to agree with/do some messed up things/punishments,and in the end think its okay to do (at thir respective points in time the punishments were factually done.be the person "guilty" or even "suspected"). like in history the punishments used were done as a collective, like the beheading, or burning at the stake(witch trials) or cruxificions, and such. and that they/followers/sheeple can be lead to do/agree with some really messed up things if the *pitch* was good enough/wouldnt make them as an individual seem fked up, or cruel. (extremely sure that was the next bit of this, before the video was stopped.i saw it quite a few times years ago,but seems hard to find the rest of it not clipped off at the same place you guys stopped it)
One of my favorite lines of his is "I'm an equal opportunity offender, I offend everyone." He said things about the gay community on stage however off stage he supported LGBTQ rights. Of all of the comedians in the world he is my favorite. I too seen him in person. I glad all of these videos exist so those who have never seen him can experience him.
One of you mentioned beheadings in Saudi Arabia when George Carlin was speaking about beheadings and said nothing about the 136 crucifixions in 2019. In 2015 they sentence a teenager to be crucified for speaking out about the government of Saudi Arabia.

There was a documentary about beheadings in Saudi Arabia. They had a public beheading in the parking lot of their equivalent of Tescos. They just pulled the van up, chop-chop, a little bit of clean-up and they drove off. I was surprised, to say the least.

Carlin figured it out. Everything that pissed him off, others would just rant about but he made it a comedy routine. That way people laughed but they listened. So he could get this stuff off his chest, get people thinking and make them laugh all at once. He’s a legend.
Hits bit on Environmentalism is so good. And yeah he is sort of the grandfather of cultural and political comedy.
He was arrested after many routines in the 70's fought the obsenity laws to them Supreme Court won and then went no holds barred in his routines
Bill Burr and Carlin are great. If you like them you should check out comedian Lewis Black. He did a stand up show on Broadway, its called "Black on Broadway", from 2003-2004. Same sarcastic anger about everything.
George Carlin was the master of modern social critique (not known very well in the UK but one of the all time greats) - absoluate genius & by all acount a lovely man - it's such a shame he isn't around today - I would've loved to see his views on all the shit that has gone down over the last 12 months......R.I.P George.

George was a very intelligent man and used topical comedy. Like ALL comedy is based on. I'll bet he had more knowledge of History, and the Bible, and Government than the three of you together.

You should check out Orbit Culture. I suggest Open Eye or Nensha. Nensha is trilogy of songs, all three have videos and tell a story. Nensha, Rebirth, and The Shadowing. The band is so talented, and have inspirations of some of the greatest bands out there.

You're absolutely right there always has a little bit of Truth to his comedy and most times comedy is based on things that are true.
So when all is said and done his comedy is a little cerebral he makes you think about what he is saying and how it relates to the real world his comedy makes you think and say WOW I never thought about that.

The twist was the ludicrous nature of capital punishment, meaning if we have a death penalty does it really matter how we kill someone. If a society finds the death penalty a suitable solution then all morality is thrown out the window so don’t get squeamish about the method.

I used to watch him on hbo in the 70's and 80's . He did one on time that is sooo funny and it's not as nasty as others he does . I saw him around 2002 in person , funny but so much cussing and no limits on anything .
Entertaining and appeasing the masses with sports is not a new concept. That's what the Roman Coliseum functioned as.
George Carlin is what people call counter culture comedy. He tested the limits of what was acceptable over the years.

Can I suggest a couple of off the beaten path music reactions: Chris Stapleton - Tennessee Whiskey (one of the best modern country artists) and Lara Fabian - Je Suis Malade (live) (Belgian singer who gets referred to as a better version of Celine Dion)
Carlin's early career contained a lot of drug humor as well as poking fun at society in the form of media like TV and Radio (Carlin worked in radio before going into comedy "Full Time"). He can be easily categorized by decade (60's up to his last show) to compare styles but not as a serious classification as his topics pretty much hit every topic. He was once cancelled in Vegas after one show for a single curse word, but that experience led to his research into the "Seven dirty words you can't use on TV or Radio" series that he constantly updated throughout the 70s
Look up lenny Bruce. He would take the word f^%$. You could use that word in anger f u. Frustration Aw f. In passion i want to f u. Then he switched the word to a different act. So you love your mother and you call her on the phone. Instead of saying i love you. He goes ma f u. Cause in passion for som one fu is a sifn of love an passion.

Funny thing, Carlin was the American narrator of Thomas The Tank Engine.
Carlin's style is rapid fire remarks on society. Can't take him seriously but under it all was some sincere commentary.

Carlin was never afraid to go a little low brow but one the most thoughtful and intelligent comedians the United States has produced! BTW, he quit school, I believe after the ninth grade.

He wasn't being serious about bringing back those death penalties like he said we're already killing people(quite brutally if I might add) its just a matter of degree. Basically what does it say about us(Americans) that we still have a line to cross despite already having come this far.

George Carlin is an atheist. Everyone (except the young) in the US knows this. It is part of comedy rule that if it offends don't watch/listen to it. The US welcomes freedom of religion (or no religion) as long as it doesn't harm the country or its citizens. Many Christians will still watch him because he has a right to not be a Christian by order of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, and because he's funny, LoL.
Not sure if you've watched George Carlin, Baseball vs football. Definitely one of his best.
