  • Mikita Tsmyh competed in the 2016 and 2021 Olympics for Belarus and has an outstanding backstroke swim technique. We had the opportunity to work with Mikita using our Smart Paddle and Velocity Meter technology. While Mikita has a very good coupling motions, stroke rate, head and body position in his backstroke swim technique we found room for improvement in his pulling motion. In this video Gary Hall Sr breaks down some simple mistakes that Mikita is making and measures exactly how much they are costing him. Whether you are world class, age group or masters At the Race Club we help swimmers of all levels and abilities learn to swim faster and improve their technique.

Great video and analysis! I suppose that it is with these little details fixed than, from olympian swimmer, you become olympic winner :-)

One of the things I have been pondering while learning back stroke again is how the body rotation compares to freestyle. As near as I can tell, we rotate more with freestyle and less with back stroke. The difference seems to be that with back stroke in order to get the top side shoulder out of the water, it seems to come from extending the shoulder more, and in freestyle, it seems to come from the rotation. I would guess a lot of that is due to the mechanical differences between the two strokes, and how the muscles are used. Probably also tied to how the time differences are so big between back stroke and freestyle.

Since we have more ROM in front of the body, you can certainly get away with less rotation in backstroke to get through recovery when compared to freestyle. However if you want to do backstroke well - we recommend focusing on rotation because a deeper rotation will allow for a better (more direct) pull path. For the same reason you can't recover the arms well on freestyle without appropriate rotation, you can't press water optimally on backstroke without the rotation (less ROM behind us). Thanks as always for your thoughts, good luck with the backstroke progress!

@@theraceclub Well, while swimming my laps, I figured out some thing. It is far easier to get the top side shoulder out of the water with freestyle than back stroke. The reason being that with freestyle, your shoulders are already on top of the water, while with backstroke, your shoulders are under the water, deeper than with freestyle. I don't know if it is possible to get enough rotation in back stroke to make up for that difference without over rotation. Still playing with it....

In fly, my butt doesn't break the surface after recovering. I noticed my faster competitors have their butts breaking the water and it makes sense that they're faster because their body profile is slimmer as their legs are better tucked in.
How do actively bring my butt to the surface to reduce drag?

You might not be doing enough chest press, tuck the chin further after each breath... but be careful - if you chest press too much you'll end up diving down every time the hands land!

@@theraceclub No, for his backstroke, I 'd ask. Is there an inhale, exhale pattern and that might also impact/explain the difference in his propulsion, r vs l side. Loved the analysis.
